The Village Trustees of North Bennington accepted a gift of historic Boston and Maine train registers at their May 2009 meet-ing. The registers were written at the North Bennington Depot which now houses the North Bennington Village offices. The eighteen registers, dating from 1924 until 1930, reflect the height of the “glory” days of railroading in Bennington County.

The train registers are a gift to the Village historical collec-tion from Joseph Klapkowski of Highland Falls, New York. Mr. Klapkowski, an active volunteer on the Catskill Mountain Railroad, recognized the uniqueness of the train registers and their day to day picture of an active railroad scene. In addition to providing an idea of who worked on the railroad, the registers recorded the train length, extra sections and second sections of some of each train.

The registers speak of day to day operation over a variety of privately owned lines made pos-sible through collective operating agreements. North Bennington, VT served as a critical link in the 1920s. A typical day (October 29, 1924) shows that trains

ran night and day. The northbound Mount Royal with Pullman cars from New York would arrive at 1:37 a.m. with nine cars. At 2:36 p.m. the southbound Mount Royal from Montreal with a sleeper from Alburgh, NY as well as Montreal would depart.

...service, not greed, as drivewheel...The dramatic juxtaposition of huge governmental bailouts and astro-

nomical private bonuses in great financial institutions has highlighted America’s over-reliance on speculative money-making, the more the better, as the major drivewheel of the American economy. Adam Smith’s “hidden hand,” the supposed working of private greed for public benefit, is being severely challenged.

It’s time once again, as in America’s reaction to the Great Depression, that public benefit be revived as a drivewheel of both business and gov-ernment. Public service in politics, governmental programs and non-profit endeavors should be honored and rewarded alongside business as a key element of the American economic and social system.

Gargantuan salaries, sky’s-the-limit benefits and grotesque profits should be replaced by a system rewarding public service in counterpart to private enterprise. Otherwise, boom-and-buts in extreme degree will continue to bedevil America.

Effecting a shift from greed to service as a driving force on American society is a great public mission of our time. Its accomplishment would be a landmark in American history.

Service NotesAndrew J. George has graduated from the Army ROTC (Reserve

Officer Training Corps) Leader’s Training Course at Fort Knox, KY. The four-week course is a leadership internship for cadets that can

lead to the ultimate goal of becoming an Army officer. College students experience and examine the Army without incurring an obligation to serve in the Army or ROTC, and are eligible to receive two-year col-lege scholarship offers and attend the Advanced ROTC Course at their college.

Cadets are observed and evaluated during classroom and field training exercises to determine their officer potential in leadership abil-ities and skills. The cadets are trained to have a sound understanding of traditional leadership values during the challenging, motivating “hands-on” training. The training develops well-disciplined, highly motivated, physically conditioned students, and helps improve the cadets’ self-con-fidence, initiative, leadership potential, decision making, and collective team cohesion. The cadets receive training in fundamental military skills, Army values, ethics, warrior ethos, rifle marksmanship, small arms tactics, weapons training, drill and ceremony, communications, combat water survival training, rappelling, land navigation, and squad-level operations field training.

The cadet is a student at the University of New England, Biddeford, ME.

Hildene Opens New Lincoln ExhibitHildene, The Lincoln Family Home announces the opening of its new

Abraham Lincoln exhibit, “The American Ideal: Abraham Lincoln and the Second Inaugural” on Saturday, September 5. Set within the context of Lincoln’s Second Inaugural, which harkens back to the then radical beliefs first enunciated in the Declaration of Independence, visitors will learn how the Civil War and President Lincoln helped bring life and meaning to the promise of the American Ideal of equality, justice and opportunity for all. The exhibit thoughtfully uses text from the speech, considered to be one of the president’s greatest, and artifacts from the collections of Hildene and Brown University’s John Hay Library, one of the five great Lincoln collections. The two institutions recently formal-ized their partnership with a Memorandum of Understanding and the formation of the Hildene-Brown Collaborative.

Among the artifacts included in the exhibit are; one of only three of Lincoln’s iconic stovepipe hats in existence, one of his bibles, a cast of the president’s hands, a life mask and a scrapbook that belonged to a supporting actress who appeared in the production of “Our American Cousin,” the play the President was watching on the evening of the assassination. The scrapbook contains a swatch of wallpaper from his Fords Theater box. Also in the exhibit is a playbill from this final performance. A bust of Thomas Jefferson, principal author of the Declaration of Independence, is on loan from the Jefferson Legacy Foundation.

The Lincoln Family Home at Hildene is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission, which includes the exhibit, is $12.50 for adults, $5 for youth 6-14, children under 6, Hildene members and volunteers are free. Hale Mountain Annual BanquetThe board of the Hale Mountain Fish and Game club has announced

that the club will hold its annual banquet on August 8, beginning at 5:30 p.m., at the Moose Club on East Main Street in Bennington, VT. The community is welcome to attend.

Christina Cruz Named SVC Director of Athletics

Southern Vermont College has appointed Christina Cruz, Ph.D., a coach, member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Rowing Team, educational research analyst, and author as the College’s new Director of Athletics. Cruz has worked at Williams College for over 20 years in an administra-tive, coaching or research capacity. She is the author of the recently pub-lished book, Gender Games: Why Women Coaches are Losing the Field, on gender issues that persist in athletics and how they influence female coaches’ sense of self and their decisions to stay in or leave coaching. She is also a guest lecturer and author of many conference papers on coaching, gender and educational research.

Cruz holds a B.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison; an M.Ed. in Administration from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts; and an Ph.D. in Educational Research and Evaluation in Curriculum and Instruction from the State University of New York at Albany. Her awards include the Civilian Congressional Medal of Honor and the President’s Distinguished Doctoral Dissertation Award from the University at Albany.

From my Corner— Susan J. Coons

...won’t lose any sleep...When I was young, I didn’t worry or even think

about health insurance. I was insured by my employer with no deductions from my paycheck. It was just always there.

When we moved to California in 1972, working for ourselves most of the time, we had no health insurance. We were very fortunate throughout the years. We experienced good health and among the

four of us: suffered one broken bone; one torn ear requiring eight stitches; one set of braces; one torn ankle; one little finger tip cut off and reattached. All of these incidents and our children’s annual check-ups with their pediatrician, were paid for out-of-pocket. If any of these incidents happened this year we would never be able to pay for them. A person can earn $35,000-$40,000 a year, have a family of four, and not be able to pay for health insurance.

I’m really in a very good place for work. I love my job, and the company offers excellent health insurance. They have tried to keep the cost down without changing our benefits. However, if I really had my choice of health care, I would say “I want what they’re having”...the kind of health insur-ance senators and congressmen enjoy.

The discussion of health care has taken ugly twists and turns. Insurance and pharmaceutical companies must be regulated. Americans with pre-existing conditions should not be turned down for insurance or treatment. Care and diagnosis should be up to the doctor, not the insurance company. Panels of doctors look-ing over insurance claims are paid to do so by the insurance companies. Isn’t there just a little conflict of interest?

There are questions being raised regarding how much we should spend on 85-year-old Aunt Millie, who suffers from COPD, angina, is diabetic and

needs a hip replacement. Is it worth the investment? Sounds heartless. But that’s where the discussion is going.

Regarding the Living Will discussion...six weeks before my husband died, he was admitted to the hospital at 6:30 in the morning. Two friends, one a relative, met us at the emergency room. A counselor employed by the hospital advised us about a living will; my husband signed it and our two friends wit-nessed it. It was that simple. Didn’t cost us, Medicare or CHP supplemental a dime.

Politicians are distorting facts and frightening Americans away from the good health care they deserve. Insurance and pharmaceutical companies

have a deadly, tight grip on Washington. It’s time congress and the senate stand up for Americans. After all, we gave them their job; we pay their salary. If they don’t improve the health care system now, all of us will have to live with, or die from, the same old health care we’ve had for the past 70 years. It will continue to be survival of the wealthiest, because they can afford to be the fittest.

I can assure you that I won’t lose any sleep over a millionaire crying because he has to pay a little more in taxes to help fund the president’s health care initiative.

...on the lighter side of this dark and cloudy summer...It seems that every time I see the sun is out, and I grab my glasses,

New Yorker, a drink and a towel; run out to the pool; put everything down on the table; and take my dip...the sun hides behind the clouds again! The only thing dry is my martini, and I’m left sitting dripping wet under cloudy skies!

Cambridge Historical Society Summer Series

On Wednesday, August 19, at 7 p.m., the Cambridge Historical Society and Museum will sponsor the second program in its summer series. Paul R. Loding, Lt. Colonel in His Majesty’s 53rd Regiment of Foot, in American, and Vice President of the Walloomsac Battle Chapter, will present a program that will trace the actual route that Colonel Baum used to travel from the Hudson Falls area along the Hudson River and through Cambridge to the battle site in Walloomsac, New York, on August 16, 1777. The program will include the role that Cambridge area residents played in events of the American Revolution. Lt. Loding will appear in his authentic British officer’s uniform for this program. The Museum will open for tours one hour prior to the scheduled program. All programs are free and open to the public; light refreshments will be served. “Saving Our History” is the name of the summer series.

Free Ballroom Dance The Berkshire Chapter of the USA Ballroom Dance is hosting a free

dance available to the community. This dance will be held on Sunday, August 30, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Berkshire Hills Country Club.

Internist Joins SVMC

Dr. Joshua Sherman, who joined Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC) on July 1 as a hospitalist, took an unusual path to become a physician. “My moth-er is a playwright and involved in the arts and my father is a physician,” stated Dr. Sherman.

“I moved to New York City when I was 16 and was involved in many aspects of the arts. By 17, I was designing for Broadway. I worked on my first movie by the time I was 18.” Dr. Sherman received his Bachelor of Arts in Theatrical Design from Marymount Manhattan College and during his college years worked on several Broadway shows.

“I took a class in nutrition and my career goals changed,” stated Dr. Sherman. “I realized that I could use many of the skills I had already honed — strong communication and observation skills, keen attention to detail, and effective problem-solving skills — in the field of medi-cine.”

Dr. Sherman then entered an extensive volunteer medical rotation program at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City to help him along his new path. He received his medical degree from the State University of New York-Stony Brook School of Medicine and completed his resi-dency in internal medicine at Stony Brook University Medical Center.

“Internal medicine requires strong clinical skills and communication with your patients,” stated Dr. Sherman. “As a hospitalist, I can focus on treating the types of illnesses that bring people to the hospital, while forming solid relationships with other doctors, my patients, and their families.”

Coming to Bennington and SVMC to practice was a clear choice for Dr. Sherman. “My family has been coming to southern Vermont for years,” he said. “My father attended RPI and Albany Medical School and my parents always loved this area. We have many close family friends here in Vermont.

“When one of our friends became ill,” added Dr. Sherman, “my family was very impressed with the care he received at SVMC. It was clearly top-notch care with the added benefits of a wonderful and friendly nursing staff and a down-to-earth medical staff. When I saw SVMC had an opening for a hospitalist, I jumped at the chance to become a part of this remarkable team. I look forward to meeting everyone in the community.

Norman’s AtticArlington, Vermont is the place

This event has been held for

15 years at the home of beloved American artist Norman Rockwell and his family from 1939 to 1953. Chaplin Shorts Return To Village

Picture Shows After five succesful silent film presenta-

tions, Village Picture Shows Cinema has invited Ben Model back to present anoth-er round of silent films with live musical accompaniment!

Charlie Chaplin is still the name most people think of first when it comes to the silent film era. Beloved the world over,

his classic comedies continue to delight audiences of all ages. This program features four hilarious slapstick shorts that Chaplin made for the Mutual Film Company in 1916-1917 that feature his comic every-man in a variety of situations. In “The Rink,” Charlie works as a waiter by day and is a roller skater in his off hours; “The Pawnshop,” one of Chaplin’s workplace comedies, finds him behind the counter handling people who want money for rings, an alarm clock, goldfish and more; tipsy Charlie goes to a sanitarium for the water cure in “The Cure;” and in “The Immigrant” Charlie comes across on a boat to America and later, down on his luck, falls in love in a Bohemian artists’ cafe. The program features live musical accompaniment by Ben Model, renowned silent film pianist/organist for the Museum of Modern Art in NYC.

Jedan Black, president of BCFCE, was recently presented with the Heart of FCI Award at the state meeting by Rita Charlton, state president. Jean is also vice president for programs for VTFCE and has attended many national conferences throughout the United States, bringing back to Bennington County a wealth of knowledge.

Beverly Hay recently was given a 50-year membership certificate and pin. Bev has been president of BCFCE as well as being very active on many committees and offices.

These two ladies are grassroot members of Bennington County, State of Vermont, and National FCE.

4-H Works to Fill Science GapAs the future becomes increasingly technology dependent and global

science competition becomes ever more intense, the United States faces a potential shortage of scientists. Only 18 percent of U.S. high school seniors are proficient in science, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). Only five percent of current U.S. col-lege graduates have earned science, engineering, or technology degrees, compared to 66 percent in Japan and 59 percent in China.

Looking at these statistics, the national 4-H Youth Development Program is tapping the resources of the 106 land grant universities and colleges of the Cooperative Extension System. In Vermont, the University of Vermont Extension is piloting the 4-H Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) program to excite youth about science careers.

Nationally and in Vermont, Extension programming has brought agricultural science, elec-tricity, mechanics, entrepreneur-ship and natural sciences careers to young people’s attention. Today, 4-H out-of-school opportunities also open the door to subjects like rocketry, robotics, global position-ing, renewable energy and comput-er science with hands-on learning experiences.

The goal of 4-H SET is to inspire one million young people nation-ally and 3,000 in Vermont on the path of excelling in science, engi-neering and technology by 2013. At its 2008 launch in Vermont, 4-Hers in Burlington, Vermont and at a statewide teen leadership meet-ing in Fairlee, Vermont took part in the first annual 4-H National Youth Science Day Experiment, using a disposable diaper, zip-lock bag, newspaper and tap water to learn about hydrogel technology and water conservation secrets.

For this year’s 4-H National Youth Science Day experiment in

October, 4-H has designed “Biofuel Blast,” a hands-on experiment to introduce young people all around the nation to biofuels. Youth will become scientists for the day, discovering how ordinary household products can create alternative energy, how that fuel can power many of the things used each day and participate in a national youth debate to discuss the “best” biofuel based on experiment outcomes. Young people will be able to see how their small creations are part of a major current nationwide discussion.

In 4-H, children learn leadership, citizenship and life skills through more than 1,000 projects with topics as varied as pets and farm animals, rocketry, digital mapping, computer game design, public speaking, pho-tography, nutrition and community service. For more information, call 802-257-7967.

Grafton Lakes Concert Series ContinuesOn Saturday, August 8, boogie on the beach to the blues from 2 p.m.

Art in the Park Summer FestivalOver 80 juried fine artists, craftspeople, and specialty food produc-

ers will be represented at the Chaffee Art Center’s 48th annual Art in the Park Summer Festival on August 8 and 9 in Main Street Park at the junction of Routes 4 and 7 in Rutland, VT. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. A voluntary donation is appreciated. There will be door prize drawings held throughout each day under the main tent with special drawings in the Chaffee Art Center, located across the street, for framed pieces of artwork from exhibiting artists.

There will be food concessions selling their delicious foods both days. Rounding out the festival are musical performances each day, and free art and craft activities for children.

Bennington’s Little Orphan Literature and lore are

filled with orphans who have overcome their less than optimal starts. Examples include Moses, Pip in Great Expectations, Little Orphan Annie. Now Bennington’s Moosefest has its own addi-tion to add to this list of notables – Eco, the Orphan Baby Moose.

Like the proverbial bundle found on the church steps, Eco began his voyage as a ‘spare’. No one had ordered him. No business had sponsored him. No artist had claimed him. But just like many an abandoned baby, his utter adorableness has been his ticket to fame and (the Chamber hopes) fortune. Artist liaison (and soft-touch) Michelle Hogan convinced artists Lauren Maguire and Lindsay LaChant to work their magic on the pale little foundling. They came up with the idea of using him as an homage to sustainability. He is beautifully decorated with images that promote and encourage ecological, ‘green’ living. He even carries his own canvas shopping bag and aluminum water bottle.

A favorite with children, Eco has become the Moosefest Mascot; a traveling ambassador of good will who has been petted and admired throughout the region. He has enjoyed starring roles at Mayfest, Ethan Allen Days, Midnight Madness and Maplerama, visited with friends at the Grand Opening of Art of the Animal Kingdom XIV at the Bennington Center for the Arts, represented Bennington at the Fair Haven Welcome Center Fun Day, and even wandered across the border to participate in the Cambridge Balloon Fest.

Perhaps the most touching aspect of Eco’s story is that, while he will be auctioned off with the rest of the herd at the Moosefest Gala on October 17, proceeds from his sale will be given to the children of Steve Wrathall, founder of Garlic Fest, who passed away suddenly last April.

Area businesses and special events committees are encouraged to contact the Bennington Chamber of Commerce to invite Eco for a visit. The Chamber can arrange to drop him off and pick him up. All that is required is that he be in a secure place where people can see him (he’s very sociable), and that he be stabled indoors at night. After all, he is a baby! MAUHS Student attends CSI CampRebecca Beagle, a senior at Mount Anthony Union High School,

recently attended CSI Camp at SUNY University in Cobleskill, NY. Becky intends to pursue a career in forensic science. Some 35 students from all over the northeast attended the camp for five days. During those five days, they were kept busy learning from professional law enforcement officials. The study of forensic science covers a multitude of investigation procedures.

The training included everything from crime scene security to evi-dence gathering. All phases of psychological profiling and serial killers were studied, along with DNA and drug identification. They had to analyze blood splatter; hair and fiber analysis and fingerprinting; and computer crimes and arson investigation. They also studied ballistics.

Becky will attend the camp next year as a camp counselor. She was able to attend the CSI Camp this year due to a generous donation from the American Legion Post 13 Auxiliary.
