Ethel Helena Packard Raney celebrated her 104th birthday on Friday, February 27. Ethel, born in New Ashford, MA, is the oldest of eight children and is the only survivor. While babysitting many of her siblings and neighbor’s children, she helped her husband run the family farm throughout the years. She also worked for many years at the Springs Restaurant in New Ashford as well as The Mill on the Floss, the Green Mountain Racetrack, and was employed with multiple housecleaning jobs throughout the years.

Ethel never had a driver’s license, and spent many years getting where she had to be on foot. When her husband died in 1983, she moved to Vermont, where she presently lives today in North Bennington.

She loves to crochet and write letters to family and friends. She draws her own special occasion cards and includes them with her letters. Being a sharing person, she loves to bake, try new recipes and shares them with everyone! Ethel attributes her longevity to hard work, lots of exercise, the support and love of family and her many, many friends, and snacks!

She will be the guest of honor at a private 104th birthday celebration on March 8 surrounded by her children, Ralph and wife Kathy of Drury, MA, Arnold and wife Etta of Lanesboro, MA, and Marty and husband Tom of North Bennington, and many, many cherished friends and family.

Lowery has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

During the six weeks of train-ing, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, core values, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marks-manship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations.

In addition, airmen who com-plete basic training earn credits toward an associate in applied science degree relating through the Community College of the Air Force.

He is the son of John Lowery of Allerton Ave., Brattleboro, Vt., and Mellisa Nelson of Hide St., Bellows Falls, Vt.

The airman is a 2008 gradu-ate of Brattleboro Union High School.

Guiding Good Choices is just five sessions of interactive, fun-filled information that helps you show your children how to manage peer pressure, make good decisions, and maintain good health. “Through the Guiding Good Choices workshop, parents can learn how to help their kids succeed in life,” said Ryan Simpson, Coordinator of the Southshire Substance Abuse Coalition, “and parents get paid for taking part!” Each family who participates can get paid up to $65 for participating.

Parents of 9-14 year olds should register now! The next Guiding Good Choices workshop will be held Tuesday nights, March 10 through April 7 from 5:30-8 p.m. at Monument Elementary. To register call Kathy Hunt at 447-7979.

Curves Supports BenningtonWith 11th Annual Food Drive

During the month of March, Curves of Bennington will participate in the 11th Annual Curves Food Drive to benefit local food banks. Collectively, over the past five years, nearly 50 million pounds of food were distributed to local communities all over the world through the Curves Food Drive.

Curves of Bennington is also giving back to the community by waiv-ing its normal service fee for any new member who brings in a bag of non-perishable groceries and joins between March 9 and March 28.

“The Curves Food Drive is always exciting,” said Judy Brownell, the owner of the Bennington club, located at 901 E. Main Street. “We have a chance to help so many people at a time when the food banks are lowest.”

Others wishing to donate may drop off non-perishable food items at Curves Monday through Friday during business hours through the month of March. For more information, please call Judy Brownell at 442-0600.

Annual Spring Craft Fair in BrunswickThe Ladies Auxiliary of the Brunswick Elks is hosting it’s Annual

Spring Craft Fair on Saturday March 7th from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Come visit over 25 vendors, enjoy the bake table, raffles and 50/50 drawing. The kitchen is also open, and you can have your child’s picture taken with the Easter Bunny as well. The event is free and open to the public. The Brunswick Elks will host an All You Can Eat Breakfast to benefit the National Junior Honor Society at the Tamarac Middle School on Sunday March 8. Breakfast includes eggs, sausage and bacon, home fries, French toast and pancakes, Danish and toast, fruit cups and juices, as well as coffee, tea or milk.

VPS Control Systems, Inc. visits KiwanisPeter and Ingrid Schaaphok, owners of the VPS, were the guest

speakers of Bob Breese. They are presently completing work on their new building on Hill Road in Hoosick. Peter explained the Flexball system that they assemble and the uses for these cables. If you take a ride on the New York Subway or most of the trains in our area, you are enjoying the easy ride brought to you by VPS. They hope to move into their new building sometime in June and are extremely happy with the Hos-Cot Buildings in Hoosick.

Gaza Pastor to speak at Hoosick Area Church Association

Unity Service Rev. Hanna Massad, Pastor of the Baptist Church in Gaza has been

invited to speak at the HACA Unity Service at the Community Alliance Church on March 15 at 6:00 p.m.

Rev. Massad was born in Gaza City in 1960. After graduating from Gaza High School, he worked in a private hospital for four years before God called him into the ministry. In 1987 Rev. Massad was ordained and served as the pastor of the Gaza Evangelical Church, while he pursued a BA degree from Bethlehem Bible College, which he received in 1991.

Hanna then left Gaza to attend Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, where he received his master of divinity degree in 1994 and PhD in Theology in 2000. While he was studying at Fuller, he served as the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Azusa, California.

Hanna was called to serve again as the pastor of the Gaza church in 1999. In September 2000 he married Suhad who was born and raised in Kuwait. Suhad has B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Jordan with a major in biology. They have two daughters Joyce and Jolene.

Rev. Massad will also be speaking at the 11 a.m. service at the West Hoosick Baptist Church the same day.

Come and hear first hand about the Christian Mission to Gaza, one of the most heavily populated and needy cities of the world. Rev. Massad will bring updated information on the ongoing Israeli/Palestinian conflict which has resulted in extreme unemployment (70%) and economic hardship for the Palestinian population of the Gaza Strip. Poverty, extreme overcrowding, crime and poor sanitation have become pervasive.

Sage City Symphony to Premiere Students’ Compositions

On Sunday, March 8, at 4 p.m., Sage City Symphony, under conductor Michael Finckel, will present its annual youth concert. Free and open to the public, the concert will be at Greenwall Auditorium in the VAPA Building on the Bennington College campus.

In September of 2008, composer Robert Singley initiated a young composers’ program with twelve students from six area high schools. This unusual program, sponsored by Sage City Symphony, is intended to introduce students to the techniques involved in writing a new piece of music for a full-sized symphony orchestra.

Will Demick, Natalie Sala, Ilya Yantovski, Patrick Hennessy, and Olivia Aserr, students at Pittsfield High School; Miles Yucht, a student at Mt. Anthony High School; and Harris MacDonald, Susan Matsui, and Patrick Madden from Mt. Greylock Regional School participated in the six-month composition project. They met with composer Robert Singley individually and in a group to work on technical issues, such as instrumental ranges and scoring techniques, and on creative top-ics, such as instrumental color and other ways to experiment with the orchestra. Once each of the students completed a short work, they

were given some assistance with orchestration and creating the score and parts. On March 8, these young composers will be given the rare opportunity of hearing their works performed. The concert will be recorded, and students will be able to use the CD as part of their college application process.

The students’ mentor for this project, Robert Singley, is Composition Intern at Bennington College. He has written over 30 works, from solo repertoire to full orchestral pieces and has had his compositions performed by several orchestras and other ensembles. He was the 2009 winner of the Vermont Music Educators’ Association “Composer of the Year” commission, the Smadbeck Composition Prize, and received honorable mention in the 2006 Brian Israel Prize for New Music. Prior to teaching at Bennington College, Singley taught at Ithaca College and the Putney School Summer Program. He has a Bachelor of Music Degree from Duquesne University and a Master of Music Degree from Ithaca College.

Also scheduled on the March 8 concert, Sage City Symphony will perform the first movement of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9; Vivaldi’s Concerto in F Major for Three Violins, with Bennington College stu-dents as soloists, and will join with the Bennington Children’s Chorus, under the direction of Kerry Ryer-Parke, in music by Copland, Fauré, and Louis Calabro. Art Display in TriState Pennysaver News Window

Several readers have stopped by the office to ask about the attractive lamps and paintings in our window. The artist is Greg Winterhalter, Associate Professor of Humanities at SVC. He received his BFA in painting from Boston University and his MFA from Pratt Institute. He was born in New York City and moved to Vermont in 1970 where he joined the faculty at Southern Vermont College.

Greg has worked in multiple mediums including oil, acrylic, tempera, wax encaustic, water color, drawing, handmade paper, printmaking and multi-media.

He participated in the Moose Fest with the SVC sponsored moose, “Walter”. He has worked as a ceramic artist in stoneware and porcelain over the past four years and enjoys throwing pots and modeling clay.

Peace Resource Center Sponsors Film Showing, ‘Climate of Hope’

The Peace Resource Center will present a showing of the film, “Climate of Hope” at the Unitarian Universalist Meetinghouse in Bennington on Friday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m. There will be a discussion period following the film.

“Climate of Hope” is a documentary by Scott Ludlam, produced by the Anti-Nuclear Alliance of Western Australia. (www.anawa.org.au) The film explores the nuclear fuel cycle – from uranium mining and processing through design and operation of a typical nuclear reactor. Enormous quantities of radioactive uranium are required to fuel a single nuclear power plant. During the mining and purification of the uranium ore, copious amounts of water- itself a precious resource- are consumed. While the nuclear industry promotes itself as a clean energy alternative, the toxic wastes from nuclear production remain strongly radioactive for thousands of years and scientists have yet to develop a safe, permanent method of storing or disposing of it. The film examines these and other issues related to the use of nuclear power and it pro-poses the use of safer, cost effective sustainable energy options.

The event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be available for purchase. The Bennington Unitarian Fellowship is co-sponsor of the event which takes place in their Meetinghouse at 108 School St. in Bennington; ample free park-ing is available across the street. Dr. Stuart DuBoff Elected President of New England Ophthalmologic Society

Dr Stuart DuBoff has been elect-ed the 103rd President of the New England Ophthalmologic Society which is the oldest medical sub-specialty society in the country. The membership includes over 700 Ophthalmologists throughout New England.

Weekly Radio Reports Now Being Archived

Radio station WBTN-AM (1370) has begun using 21st century tech-nology to help bring some of the region’s 18th, 19th and 20th century history to life. The weekly radio reports by Joe Hall — called “Bygone Bennington” -- are now being archived on the station’s web site, where they’re available through both audio recordings and text transcripts, accompanied by companion pictures.

Robert Howe, the president of the board of the Shires Media Partnership, the non-profit group that owns the station, says this is one of WBTN’s first attempts to use cyberspace and on-line communication “to expand the reach and usability of our local radio programming.” The station -- whose motto is “Live and Local” -- puts an emphasis on local personalities, local news, local activities and local history. Hall, a Bennington native and a former president of the Bennington Historical Society, focuses his weekly program on the region’s past.

Recent offerings have described the early courthouses (three of them burned); the first settlers; the differences between life in the village and the surrounding countryside (including electricity, run-

ning water, and indoor plumbing); and education in the one-room school that Hall himself attended on Hardwood Hill. Two of them described actions by village offi-cials to provide cheap firewood to residents in danger of freezing dur-ing the nation-wide coal strike of 1922. The radio broadcasts are less than five minutes each, so Hall had to use four segments to deal with the life of William Clark Bull, who designed some of Bennington’s most impressive structures, includ-ing the train station on Depot Street and what is now the South Shire Inn on Elm Street.

Some years ago, Hall came into the possession of many glass plate negatives taken by Frederick Burt, whose photographs captured much of Bennington life in the early 1900s. These have since been donated to the Bennington Museum. Along with other archival art and vintage post

card scenes, they’re being used to illustrate the short narratives. All of the programs can be found on the station’s web site, which is www.wbtnam.org. Hall has lived in Bennington all of his 76 years. His connec-tion with WBTN actually pre-dates the 1953 founding of the radio station itself because the small white frame building that houses the station is located on land that once was a part of his father’s Harwood Hill dairy farm. Hall worked on that farm as a boy, and after graduation from Bennington High School in 1950 went to work at Fairdale Farms, on Bennington’s West End. He later worked for 20 years at Metropolitan Life, and then became the executive direc-tor of the Bennington Housing Authority.

Kathleen Atkins of North Bennington Named to Commendation List at SVC Kathleen Atkins of North Bennington has been named to the

Commendation List for the fall semester at Southern Vermont College. The Commendation List recognizes part-time students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.25 during the semester.

Trista Hoot of Manchester Named to Provost List at SVC

Trista Hoot of Manchester has been named to the Provost List for the fall semester at Southern Vermont College in Bennington. The Provost List recognizes full-time students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.25 during the semester.

Hoot is a senior majoring in Psychology. She is also a member of the Ski and Snowboard Club and volunteers as a Peer Mentor.

Hoot is a graduate of Burr and Burton Academy. She is the daughter of Stella Hoot of Manchester.

Midweek Music at Williams CollegeThe Williams College Department of Music will present their weekly

lunchtime recital series featuring student and faculty performers on Wednesday, March 11, at 12:15 p.m. in Thompson Memorial Chapel on the Williams College campus. This free event is open to the public.

All are invited to bring a lunch and listen to wonderful performances of classical, jazz and world music. Organ players will be featured as well this week. Check music.williams.edu for specific program details.

Bennington Free ClinicThe Bennington Free Clinic provides free medical care to adults

over the age of 18 who do not have insurance. The clinic is currently open Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. Please call 447-3700 for an appointment. The Bennington Free Clinic is located at 601 Main Street in downtown Bennington, in the school building of the First Baptist Church.

‘Got Milk?’ … We’ve Got the Cookies!If you didn’t buy enough Girl Scout Cookies to last you the year,

Hoosick Falls Girl Scout Troop #1313 will help you fill your cookie jar. The troop is raising money for a trip to Washington, D.C., in August, and would love your support. Girls will be selling cookies at Stewarts in Hoosick (corner of Routes 22 and 7) on Friday, March 13, from 4 to 8:30 p.m., and Saturday, March 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Cookies are $3.50 per box (cash or checks with ID accepted). Depending on how many are sold, the troop will earn between 55- and 65-cents per box sold. If you have any questions, please contact Joyce Brewer at 518-686-4942.
