The Bennington Museum hosts its 12th Annual Festival of Trees Grand Finale Gala on Friday, December 19 from 7 to 10 p.m. This fabulous evening wraps up weeks of holiday excitement and events of the Festival of Trees “Traditions”. Celebrating traditions both old and new, this event is the final opportunity to bid on exquisite gifts that have been generously donated as part of the museum’s silent auc-tion, and for the first time, participate in a live auction held during the Gala. The museum is pleased to have Mary Anne Lukas of Southern Vermont Auction Gallery in Dorset as our auctioneer for the live auction portion of the celebration.

The Grand Finale Gala is an evening to enjoy delicious catered hors d’oeuvres, signa-ture drinks, wine and champagne, live music and friends. The beautifully decorated muse-um, along with the live music from several groups provides holiday ambience you are sure to enjoy.

The auction is the museum’s largest fundraiser of the year and contains beautiful items includ-ing trees of all sizes and themes, baskets filled with various culi-nary delights, wreaths, hand-crafted items, framed prints and paintings, and much more. Join in the fun on December 19, and take part in the spirited live auc-tion of selected items. Everyone is sure to find the perfect gift for that special someone, while supporting the Bennington Museum. The silent and live auction items can be viewed throughout the museum galler-ies from November 28 through December 19, the evening of the auction. Bidding cards for the auction can be obtained at the front desk of the museum.

Admission is free to those holding a card throughout the

duration of the festival.Also for the first time this year,

the Bennington Museum is host-ing an on line auction where you can bid on domestic and interna-tional travel packages, ski vaca-tions, golf vacations, movie and sports memorabilia and more. The on line auction items can be viewed and bid on by visit-ing www.benningtonmuseum.org. Preview of the on line items begins on November 21 and bid-ding starts on November 28. On line bidding will conclude on December 18. Make your best offer as some of the items will go to the live auction at the museum during the Gala on December 19.

To add just another element of fun to the wonderful evening, we will have raffle drawings for “Molly’s Garden”, a beautifully crafted quilt. This 41” square wall hanging is set on a black background with a vibrant flo-ral pattern across the backdrop. Tickets are only $1 and avail-

able at the Bennington Museum now through December 19. Also being drawn are the winners of the gift certificate raffle which contains many great certificates from area businesses. Finally, the winners of the tabletop trees from the “Children’s Forest” will be posted during the Gala. Each tree was creatively decorated by elementary school classes from the area. Tickets for these wonder-fully decorated trees are on sale at the museum from November 28 through December 19.

We would like to recognize and thank the Advanced Design Team from MAUHS, who once again did a great job in creating the graphics for the banner that hangs on the museum, the invi-tation package, posters and ads. Every year they have shown their creativity and professionalism in working with the museum staff, and this year was no exception.

Workshop on Business Succession and Employee Ownership

The Vermont Employee Ownership Center (VEOC) will pres-ent a two-hour workshop titled “Selling to the Employees: Employee Ownership as a Path for Business Succession” on December 5 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the West Mountain Inn in Arlington, Vermont.

The workshop is offered by the VEOC and is co-sponsored by the Bennington County Industrial Corporation, the Bennington Chamber of Commerce and the Manchester and the Mountains Chamber of Commerce.

The workshop will include a brief overview of ownership succession options, the pros and cons of different forms of employee ownership, and key financial and other benefits of this approach. Joining the VEOC’s Jon Crystal and Don Jamison for this presentation will be Rick Gile, founder of Rutland-based Kalow Technologies, which designs and manufactures custom control systems machinery and is now 100% employee-owned through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan.

Girl Scouts Learn ‘No Pain, No Gain’On Saturday, November 8, Hoosick Falls Girl Scout Troop #1144

learned what the phrase, “No Pain, No Gain” means!! Pam Lawton, owner of “Fitness Now” in Hoosick, opened up her gym to the troop, helping them to earn their fitness badge. Pam taught the girls some stretching techniques, a body combat workout and other exercises that got their hearts pumping (and some mothers’ hearts as well)!! She ended their session with a discussion about proper nutrition and how eating healthy and regular exercise will help them to maintain a fit lifestyle for years to come. Pam answered many questions that the troop had and gave the girls a sense of pride knowing that they had just earned a badge and had lots of fun in the process! Thanks, Pam, for giving back to the Hoosick Falls Girl Scout community!! Troop #1144 couldn’t have done it without you!!

Festive Cabaret at St. Mary’s AcademySt. Mary’s Academy proudly presents “Twas the Night Before

The Stratton Foundation has helped boost recovery from men-tal illness and addiction through a grant to United Counseling Service (UCS) that helps rein-force healthy behavior.

The grant provides a significant addition to the lending library of books, CDs, and DVDs available at UCS to enhance counseling, reinforce personal changes, and help speed recovery.

“People cannot easily get these materials otherwise, but they can be very helpful tools in aiding recovery and personal growth,” according to Northshire UCS Director Peg Gregory.

“Now we can offer an exciting addition to our lending library of wonderful, useful books and collection of CDs and DVDs that addresssubstance abuse and mental illness,” Gregory said.

The materials are available to anyone receiving counsel-ing at UCS. The lending library includes many authoritative titles on parenting, teenage behavior problems, depression, relaxation, ADHD, marriage and relation-ships, breaking the cycle of sub-stance abuse, and other frequent concerns.

The materials supplied by the Stratton Foundation will be incorporated into the Northshire UCS substance abuse program. They can also be shared out to community groups and events to strengthen drug-abuse preven-tion efforts.

“The Stratton Foundation rais-es money locally to help support community non-profit organiza-tions, Interim Executive Director Gun Burns said. “Our mission is to enhance the quality of life and create a sense of community right here in Southern Vermont. The Stratton Foundation is greatly pleased to support this kind of innovative approach that

Thanksgiving Open House at John Street Gallery

The 15 John Street Gallery, Hoosick Falls, will be celebrating a fourth year anniversary on Friday, November 28, from 2-7 p.m.

Featured artist will be Russell Bink showing his wood carving of a magnificent Golden Eagle. Composed of wood and acrylic, 54” tall, the Golden Eagle is perched on an ice encrusted prehistoric elk antler emerging from melting snow. This unique sculpture took a good por-tion of a year to execute, took third place, novice division, Ward World Championship 2007, and was recently exibited at the Bennington Center for the Arts.

The John Street Gallery is Rensselaer County’s largest exibitor for area artists who reside in a rural environment and have an outlet to exi-bit their talents. Exhibits include paintings from minitures to xtra large (3’x6’) in multimedia oils, watercolors & acrylics, woodworks, pottery, glassware,and unique giftware both new & antique.

the core dancers of the organization who teach and perform American Tribal Style bellydance. Green Mountain Oasis to Host Open House to Benefit the Spirit of SharingOn Saturday, November 29th Green Mountain Oasis will host an

Open House to benefit the Spirit of Sharing, a community-wide charity that provides for families in need during the holiday season. A full-service day spa providing facials, therapeutic massages, body wraps, mineral makeup and waxing among other treatments, the Oasis will open its doors for this special one-day event and offer free tours of the treatment rooms, demonstrations and sample treatments. Delectable desserts will be provided by Nova Mae’s Café.

Donations will be accepted for Chair Massage and Mineral make-overs with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the Spirit of Sharing. In addition, a raffle of fabulous prizes will also be on hand and one lucky winner will receive a $100 gift certificate to the Oasis.

Helen Norwood RennerHelen Norwood Renner, age

93, a resident of Ladd Road in Pownal, died on Saturday morn-ing, November 15, 2008, at Crescent Manor Care Center in Bennington following a long ill-ness.

She was born in Williamstown, Ma., on October 24, 1915 and was the daughter of the late William N. and Sophie (Norwood) Thompson. She moved to Pownal as a young child with her family to her mother’s childhood home on Ladd Rd.

Helen received her educa-tion in Williamstown and is a graduate of the Williamstown High School in the class of 1933. She graduated from Syracuse University in 1937 with a degree in Arts and Library Science. After graduation she stayed on at the University as their Librarian. She has held positions as Librarian at Kent State University in Ohio and RPI in Troy, N.Y.

She married George M. Renner on April 17, 1943 in Monroe, La. Mr. Renner survives.

The Renners returned to Pownal, in 1947, and she went to work as a Post Office clerk. Helen was the Pownal Town Clerk for two terms and also was a reporter for the North Adams Transcript for many years.

Helen volunteered for many years with several organiza-tions. She was the Librarian at the Solomon Wright Library in Pownal. She was a Poll Clerk for the Town of Pownal and col-lected food for the Pownal Food Pantry.

She was a member of the Pownal Fire Protective Association Auxiliary as well as the President of the Vermont State Firefighters Auxiliary. In

2000, Helen received a certifi-cate of Appreciation from the Secretary of State of Vermont in recognition of her many years of services to the Town of Pownal, and to the State of Vermont.

Mrs. Renner loved horses and dogs, and has raised Collies for many years, and was an avid gar-dener, and a communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in North Pownal.

Besides her husband of sixty-five years, she is survived by her five godchildren, nieces, neph-ews and cousins.

Roberta “Jean” Dwyer Roberta “Jean” (Humphrey)

Dwyer, age 71, a resident of Jennings Drive in Bennington

died on Saturday, November 15, 2008, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., following a cou-rageous battle against leukemia.

She was born in Bennington on September 8, 1937 and was the daughter of the late Robert and Elizabeth (”Betty” Mathers) Humphrey. Jean attended local schools and is a graduate of

Bennington High School in the class of 1955.

Jean married her high school sweetheart, Bernard Dwyer on January 4, 1958, at the Methodist Church in Bennington. They had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in January 2008. Bernard survives.

For thirty-five years she was employed as manager at the Red Mill Inn in Wilmington, Vt. The Dwyers had resided in Wilmington for 40 years and had moved to Bennington in 2001.

She attended the First Methodist Church in North Hoosick, N.Y., and was a dedi-cated caregiver and a devoted grandmother.

Survivors besides her husband include two sons: Bernard “Bud” Dwyer, Jr. and his wife Pamela of Wilmington, Vt., and Ronald Dwyer and his companion, Shannon Meaney of Shaftsbury, Vt. Jean leaves her grandchildren: Ashley Dwyer of Wilmington, Vt., Olden Dwyer of Shaftsbury, Drew Hogan and Daniel Hogan, both of Shaftsbury.

long-time resident of Bennington, passed away Monday, November 17, leaving many fond memo-ries for his loved ones. Richard (Dick) was a 57-year member of the Bennington Fire Department where he served as Chief from 1963-1965. He loved fishing, was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He was a loyal Red Sox fan and also a fan of the New England Patriots. More importantly, he was totally devoted to his family,

particularly his wife of 61 years, Janet May (Mattison). A father of 8, his oldest son “Dickie” passed away in 2004 leaving 7 surviving children, Gloria Rodgers (Bob), Alan (Pattie), David (Nancy), Pam Ketzner (Kent), Patti Becker (Craig), Bonnie Wilkins (Randy), and Tyler (Denise); sixteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren

Dick served in the South Pacific during WWII with the U.S. Navy Seabees. He was award-ed the WWII Victory Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal and the American Theater Medal. He served as the Bennington County Rep. to the Vt. State Fire Fighters Association, was

a member of the New England Chiefs Association, and a Past President of the Bennington County Mutual Aid. In addition, he served as a member of the old Howitzer Company Vermont National Guard between 1935 – 1938 and in the CCC between 1935 – 1936. He was a lifetime member of VFW post 1332 and American Legion Post 13.
