The “stars” were out on Saturday, March 21, when the Bennington Rescue Squad celebrated 46 years of “Neighbor Helping Neighbor”. It is the Squad’s Annual Banquet and Awards Ceremony. Past, pres-ent and future members of the squad were present, along with special guests and dignitaries from the State of Vermont, Bennington Selectboard, Bennington Police and Fire Departments from Bennington and the surrounding towns. Also in attendance were Rescue Squads from Vermont and New York. The evening held several monumental events, which included William “Bill” Collins receiving several acco-lades for reaching an unprecedent-ed milestone, 10,000 rescue squad calls. Bill was given a flag in which Senator Patrick Leahy had flown over the Nation’s Capital in honor of his achievement. The flag, encased in an oak display case, was presented to Collins by William Hathaway, Executive Director of the Bennington Rescue Squad. Also the honorable Mary Morrissey presented to Bill a state flag flown over the State Capital in his honor. She also presented a State Resolution acknowledging his accomplishments.

Hathaway stated “The Stars of Life is a special program whose sole purpose is to publicly recog-

nize and celebrate the achievements of all people working selfless and heroic ambulance industry. This program seeks to honor outstanding individuals as a thank you for their service, their sacrifice and the inspiration they bring to all of us. This program importantly seeks to honor these individuals as rep-resentatives or ambassadors of our industry so that the outside community and government agencies value the contribution they make to our neighbors every day.”

The celebration continued with music and dance provided by KMI Entertainment.

After four years, Bennington’s herd is back from the wild, just in time to celebrate Moosefest 2009.

The six month festival began officially on Memorial Day weekend and lasts through mid-October. It is a reprise of the 2005 edition that was a significant fundraiser for area non-profits. It also stimulated visitor traffic in a surge of business revenues that Main Street proprietors remem-ber to this day.

The Bennington Area Chamber of Commerce orga-nized Moosefest 2005, which had caught the attention of national media outlets. Past and cur-rent moose sponsors hope that despite the nation’s economic slowdown, 2009’s family-orient-ed event will recapture some of its predecessor’s magic.

Each fiberglass moose, spon-sored locally and decorated by an area artist, is now on public dis-play in and around Bennington. They have a minimum spon-sorship level of $2,000, which helped offset artist compensation and other administrative costs. Some sponsors also donated in-kind services in return for their

play, the herd will be auctioned off in the fall to benefit several area non-profits, which were selected by competitive proposal. Chamber executive director Jo Ann Erenhouse agreed that all of the participants are sensitive to the change in economic climate since 2005.

“Everyone understands that was then, and this is now,” Erenhouse said. “Yet we still have a robust organizing committee and dedicated citizens stepping forward to help out. Everyone

Hoosick Youth Center The Hoosick Falls Youth & Community Center will offer a series of

five camps during the 2009 summer vacation. Each camp week will have a different theme to provide enrichment in fun, inventive and exciting ways. The camps are open to children in kindergarten to sixth grade. A limit of 20 participants will be accepted for each camp. Each camp will run Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and there is a fee.

Inherit the Wind Comes to the Courthouse

On a scorching summer day in 1925, a monumental trial began in Dayton, Tennessee which tested the intellectual strength of two prominent attorneys. Thirty years later, playwrights Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee published their dramatized account of the trial in Inherit the Wind. The Footlighters, in association with the Courthouse Community Center, are excit-ed to announce their produc-tion of this great drama in the Courthouse courtroom on October 2 and 3. Open auditions will be held for men, women and teens wishing to participate on June 16 and 17, from 7-9 p.m., in the Courthouse courtroom. Chocolate Festival and Murder Mystery On Saturday, June 6, the community once again will have the

opportunity to be overwhelmed by decadently scrumptious chocolate desserts and entertained by a ‘whodunit’ murder mystery, “Dead Man’s Hand”.

Doors open at 7 p.m., when you’ll get to enjoy a virtually unlimited selection of chocolate desserts created by chefs and chocolatiers from Bennington County’s finest restaurants and shops. At around 8 p.m., the murder mystery begins. Two couples are lured to a remote location to be murdered one by one. Who is the murderer and what do those about to be murdered have in common? Sound familiar? Maybe, but are you really watching what you think you’re watching...and does the title really mean what you think it means?

The event takes place for one evening only at the First Baptist Church, 601 Main Street, Bennington. All proceeds from this gala event will sup-port Project Against Violent Encounters (PAVE) in its mis-sion to end domestic and sexual violence and provide services to victims in Bennington County.

Remember to set aside Saturday night, June 6, for an evening of desserts, raffles, who-dunit theater, and an opportunity to support the work of PAVE.

Oldcastle Theater Company Plans Fundraiser for Bennington Free ClinicCo-chairpersons Mary Geannelis of the Oldcastle Board of Directors

and Sue Andrews, Executive Director of Greater Bennington Interfaith Community Services, Inc. announced today that the Oldcastle Theater Company will present the hilarious farce “One, Two, Three” at a fund-raising performance to benefit the Bennington Free Clinic on Saturday, June 27, at 8 p.m. The performance will be preceded by a wine and hors d’ oeuvres reception at 7 p.m., with service provided by local physicians. Tickets for the event will be $40 and can be obtained by calling the Box Office at 447-0564. Oldcastle Theater Company is located at the Bennington Center for the Arts on West Road (Vermont Route 9 West), 1 mile outside of Old Bennington.

Originally written by Hungarian-American playwright Ferenc Molnár, “One, Two, Three” was turned into a film starring James Cagney and Horst Buchholz in 1961. A new adaptation of the play by Morwyn Brebne took Canada’s famed Shaw festival by storm last summer. The Oldcastle production of “One, Two, Three” will be the United States’ premiere of this brilliant, madcap, whirlwind farce.

The Bennington Free Clinic provides free medical care, care manage-ment, and specialty referral to adults throughout Bennington County and nearby New York who have no health insurance or catastrophic only health insurance. The clinic, which is located at 601 Main Street in downtown Bennington is staffed by volunteer physicians, nurses, and lay-staff from the Bennington area. Fundraising efforts allow the clinic to provide medications, lab and X-ray services to persons who are unable to pay for them. Call the clinic at 447-3700 to obtain additional information or to schedule an appointment.

Celebrating Old Glory

The Vintage Voices, Friends of the Bennington Battlefield, and the Town of Hoosick welcome all to attend “Celebrating Old Glory” at the Barnett Homestead at Bennington Battlefield State Historic site in Walloomsac, NY, on Flag Day, June 14, from 1 to 4 p.m.

The formal program will begin at 2 p.m., with the National Anthem being sung by Mary Stedman and music provided by the Hoosick Falls Community Band. The Sons of the American Revolution will also be in atten-dance with a flag display. Special activities are planned for children with the first 50 children receiv-ing free flags. All are welcome to attend and join in celebrating and showing respect for our flag.

Immigrant Center Announces “Walk-in Wednesdays” Beginning Wednesday, June 3,

“Walk-in Wednesdays” will take place weekly from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 88 South Street, Pittsfield, MA.

Participants are invited to sign up for appointments on a first-come first-served basis any time between 10:00 a.m and 12:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Experienced immigration counselors will provide half hour consultations and case assessments for such benefits as U.S. citizenship, fam-ily relative petitions, adjustment of status applications, green card renewals, and non-immigrant visas. Immigration counselors speak both Russian and Spanish languages.

New Farmers’ Market Opens on Route 7 In Hoosick, NY

There’s a new farmers’ market opening up on route 7 in Hoosick, NY! The Countryside Farmers’ Market will be located at the Countryside Woodcraft Store and Workshop beginning Friday, June 5, from 4 until 7 p.m. Joanne Tilley of Tilldale Farms in Hoosick proposed the idea to the folks at Countryside and they agreed to support the farmers’ market by providing a place where people in the community could sell their farm products, produce, baked goods and handmade crafts.

So far, there are about twelve different vendors and they are hoping that more people will participate once the word gets out. Some of the products being offered will be organic beef and pork from Tilldale Farm, organic artisan cheese and yogurt from Berle Farm, Boll Family Baked Goods, Kontoulis Family Extra Virgin Olive Oil imported directly from Greece, and locally produced maple syrup and honey. In addition there will be locally raised chicken and eggs as well as fresh vegetables and fruits throughout the growing season. There will also be food and beverages available for sale provided by Bryan Hess who is planning to have grilled BBQ Chicken marinated with a special homemade recipe. He also is planning to offer baked beans, pickles, dried fruit snacks and beverages. And don’t forget to take a tour of the Countryside Woodcraft Store.

Volunteers WantedSecond Chance Animal Center

in Shaftsbury, VT will be holding its fifth annual Tour de Paws on Sunday, July 19

Tour de Paws is a bicycling and walking event to promote and raise funds for the animals at Second Chance.

Volunteers are needed for the day’s event as well as the pre-planning stage. Prior to the event, volunteers are needed to help with publicity and organization. On the day of the event, volun-teers are needed to set up the tables, take registrations and man the refreshment and promotion tables.
