From the Acting Principal Trinity Catholic College Lismore the Lantern No. 15 Week Ten Term Three Wednesday, 21st September, 2016 Celebrating 130 Years Dear Parents/Guardians, Reflection on last Sunday’s reading, Luke 16:10-13 Jesus said “Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much. If then you have not been faithful with the dishonest wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you what is your own? No slave can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth”. True wealth consists not in what we keep but in what we give away. As soon as a person has more than they need, the extra they have belongs by right to the person who has not enough. We are God’s stewards. All that we have belongs to him-our time, our talents, our money, our property. There is an African proverb that says: “When you pray, move your feet.” It is good to be silent and attentive in prayer. But the love that grows in me through meeting the Lord in quiet prayer must translate into deeds of love. Saint Ignatius of Loyola says that “love is found in deeds rather than in words”. There is a re-affirming message for us at Trinity. OUR FAREWELL WEEK FOR YEAR 12 By the time you receive this Lantern, half the week will be over and our Year 12 students will be preparing for their Graduation day – a very special event in their school history. Earlier this week students were farewelled in House groups - speeches delivered, gifts exchanged and gratitude expressed. Our Graduation day ceremonies will tie off the week for Year 12 students in a special way. Mass will be celebrated by Father Nicholas for the whole school and parents of Year 12 students. Later on the same day we will hold a prize giving ceremony to highlight and celebrate the academic excellence achieved by Year 12 students in their school courses. Some awards are held over to the Graduation Ball and the Dux will be announced in a special assembly in 2017. Graduation day is always a great day for our whole College and parents of Year 12 students. FAREWELL MR ALF GREEN Recently Mr Alf Green, our Aboringinal Education Assistant, resigned after almost 5 years in his position. A more gentler and humble man would be difficult to find and Mr Green’s presence will be missed at Trinity. We wish you well Mr Green. PRIVACY POLICY Recently there have been some changes to the CECNSW Privacy manual necessitating the College to revise its own Privacy policy and related guidelines. School zones operate on all gazetted school days, which are all days that the school is open, even pupil free days. For Trinity this will mean that Monday, 10th October, which is a staff day, is also considered a school zone day. PARENT ASSEMBLY In the last two Lanterns we promoted a Parent Assembly gathering titled, ‘Why Parents Matter’ with presenter Mr Chris Hudson. This was held last Wednesday and was an exceptionally good presentation. I am sure those parents who attended would have left the evening being both reaffirmed and perhaps challenged in their roles as parents. I would like to thank our Parent Assembly committee for bringing this opportunity to Lismore: Tundra Snape, Sue Miller, Helen Heineman, Jo Kelly, Kylie Hawkins, Zelinda Brown and Sr Mary Bruggy. CAPA EXCELLENCE Trinity is well renown for the great achievements of the CAPA students and staff across Dance, Visual Art, Music and Drama. Today I highlight Drama. This year the following students have been nominated for inclusion in On Stage- a showcase of the best Drama presentations by all HSC students in the state. 10 WITH TEENSFAITH FOR LIFE

As we come to the end of a very busy Term and are in the process of farewelling our Year 12 students it is also time to make some preparations for next Term With this in mind a large amount of planning has been going into an upcoming event for our Year 9 students During Week 4 next Term our Year 9 students will be participating in their annual outdoor education camp and Peer Leadership training days

The two night camp provides students with the opportunity to take healthy risks support help and encourage each other further develop respect for each other and the environment and practice listening tolerance and trust The camp is combined with two days of Peer Leadership training that not only leads into the running of our Peer Support program next year but also provides students with skills which are transferrable across a range of contexts The following skills are explored during the training relationship building communication empathy decision making problem solving creative thinking flexibility assertiveness facilitation

In completing the two days in conjunction with the outdoor education camp students are provided with a week long experience that helps tobull provide opportunities to develop and practise leadership skills which can be utilised in other areasbull develop confidence in studentsbull build positive relationships across the schoolbull assist students in gaining skills which are highly regarded by employersbull increase interpersonal skills and improves personal relationshipsbull provide opportunities to demonstrate initiativebull develop organisational and time management skillsbull enhance relationships within the year group

Along with many other staff I look forward to accompanying these students on what promises to be a highly valuable experience

R U OK DAYThursday 8th September 2016 saw Trinity participate in an awareness raising activity that was a collaboration between Trinity StandBy Response Service and Headspace R U OK DAY at Trinity involved students and staff in constructing and decorating some small kites and paper aeroplanes The focus was on positive messages strategies for caring for self and others and conversations about how we can support ourselves and others This activity proved to be a big hit with both staff and students What a great way to have some fun and raise awareness about some very important messages Some of you may have noticed an article in the Northern Star featuring two of our Year 12 students who also assisted and participated on the day Lucie Lawerence and James McInnes You can see by the photographs below the level of involvement and the students are to be commended for the way in which they embraced the messages and engaged in the activities on the day

UNIFORMAs many parents may be aware over the last few weeks a number of staff have been having conversations with students regarding uniform and the requirements here at Trinity As such it cannot be denied that for many students the times of rapid growth provide some challenges in regards to uniform and when we add in the complexities of adolescence combined with a variance in societal expectations from years past the challenges seem to mount up It is important to emphasise then the requirements as outlined in the College Planner to assist in limiting the amount of ambiguity that can occur in regards to expectations at the College Additionally all students have been reminded at various levels about expectations and requirements regarding hair cutsstyles jewellery the use of makeup and other sometimes fashion dependant additions to their attire

Acting Assistant Principal - Middle School

ldquoAll students are expected to have the correct full College uniform and to take pride in it A good public image is important and this should be promoted at all times If on a particular day a student is unable to wear any part of the uniforman INCORRECT UNIFORM NOTE (located in the back of the Planner) must be completed by the studentrsquos ParentCarer and presented to their Tutor at the beginning of the day Such a note would cover uniform articles at the dry cleaners the intention to buy a new pair of shoes as soon as possible etcetera The uniform when worn should be worn in full After school trips down the street or to ParentStudentTeacher Interviews should reflect the importance of public imagerdquo

In addition to the above please refer to the photos below which provide a visual reference regarding College uniform and student presentation Once a student puts on the College uniform they are not only representing themselves but rather the entire College thus it is important for this to be worn well displaying pride in themselves and the school community Thank you for your support in regards to this I am sure you would agree that our students really do lsquolook the partrsquo when wearing the uniform correctly

DELANEY CUPAt the conclusion of our assembly last Friday Champagnat House were acclaimed as the winners of the Delaney Cup for 2016 Congratulations to the students and staff of Champagnat House who will now have the opportunity to attend an excursion to WetrsquonrsquoWild water park early next term on Wednesday 19th October

The Delaney Cup provides students with an opportunity to be rewarded for their level of cooperation involvement and engagement in a range of activities at the College All students are to be commended on the level of House spirit displayed at various events at the College and the way in which they avail themselves of the extra curricular opportunities at the College that are participated in on a voluntary basis Our Delaney Cup assembly last Friday was most definitely a sight to see Numerous students representing their House with pride and enthusiasm in an activity that was both fun and engaging for all spectators created an extremely positive atmosphere allowing students to acclaim the participation of their peers

The students at Trinity demonstrate time and time again their willingness to get involved in awareness raising activities associated with both local and global issues Towards the end of our assembly staff and students were shown a clip about a global movement designed to raise awareness regarding mental health issues associated with returned service men and women Those of you familiar with the 22 pushups in 22 days phenomena that has gone viral across many social media

platforms would already be aware of this movement It was inspiring to see at the conclusion of the clip 220 of our own students (22 from each house from all year levels) complete 22 pushups in unison in front of the entire college community It was fantastic to witness and just goes to show that students at Trinity are able to recognise social justice issues and proactively respond in a way that not only shows support of those effected but also assists in educating others about the issue This is a great thought when considering that the students of today will be the leaders of tomorrow

Tournament of the Minds

Tournament of the Minds is a competition that challenges you your team work skills and your imagineering skills On 28th August Trinity sent two teams to Kingscliff to compete in the Regional Finals One of the teams contained Merina Penanueva ndash 7 Nicholas Vinall ndash 7 Brooke Toms ndash 8 Dakota Jones ndash 8 Elise Davies ndash 8 Arky Walker ndash 9 and Liam Baille ndash 9 their question looked at the studies of Language Literature specifically using the idea of a gathering where particular people have to be involved for a certain reason The people they used were Major Tom Alice in Wonderland and The Scream

The second team competing consisted of William Smith ndash 7 Tamati Ngatai ndash 7 Gabriel Halligan ndash 7 Lucinda Cochrane ndash 8 Blaire Alexander-Gordan ndash 9 and Amelia McGeary -10 who competed in the category of Engineering and Mathematics where they had to develop a mechanism that could determine whether or not a rectangle was in the golden ratio

Both teams had a 6-week period to answer their question and polish off their 10 min performance Fortunately the hard work paid off for the Engineering and Mathematics team who won at Regionals meaning that they would compete at State Finals in Sydney in early September Sydney was a similar ordeal with the same type of question but only 3 hours to come up with the answer and a 10 min performance The question at Sydney involved building a replica of a human out of paddle pop sticks and other resources that could complete the sport Standing High-Jump The replica human had to be as life like as possible and the bending of the knees action should be shown on the replica All together Tournament of the Minds is a fantastic competition that builds many life and performance skills and is a great experience
