Celebrating

130 Years

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Last Sunday the woman we all know as Mother Teresa of Calcutta was proclaimed a Saint. It is rare that a person is proclaimed to be a Saint so soon after their earthly life and yet here we have a lady who died in 1997 achieving this status. While many of us know of Mother Teresa through the media a good proportion of us actually shared life with her and would recall visits she made to many countries and the role she played on the world stage. This is not a person who lived centuries ago, she lived in our lifetime.

Why is she so revered? Mother Teresa lived her life as a servant of God. She, and others who followed her, treated the marginalised of society with respect and dignity. Through her action, she challenged all in the world to look deeper into themselves and to reach out to others in a caring and compassionate manner. She has been referred as an icon of God’s tender mercy.

Perhaps not so well known is that Mother Teresa is reported as having a struggle with her faith for a significant portion of her life. It is almost incomprehensible that this pious woman was in this situation yet she managed to maintain her commitment to her faith and her calling. In a way this makes her even more human, more like you and I. Perhaps, in times when we feel challenged with our own faith we can gain solace from her life and find a new clarity in our faith.

PEER SUPPORT NEWS – LEAD BY OUR YEAR 10’s FOR OUR YEAR 7’sThe focus of the session conducted during Week 6 was Wellbeing. Students discussed the need to enhance their wellbeing so they are mentally and emotionally fit to face obstacles and setbacks they encounter.

They considered the positive effects of elements such as eating well, getting sufficient sleep and regular exercise.

Achievements were redefined as the skills and attitudes learned in reaching a set goal rather than the final product.

Students were encouraged to identify their strengths. These strengths could be their achievements, activities they enjoy, their aspirations and the opportunities and people they have to support them.

Encourage your child by praising effort rather than results. You could say something like “I’m really proud of you, you worked hard to practise for this test, you even asked your teacher for help.”

We have now reached the halfway point in the program and up until this point in Peer Support, students have been encouraged to respond with open thoughts to challenges and be optimistic about pursuing positive outcomes. This kind of thinking allows them to believe that new skills and strategies are beneficial and can make a difference to the outcome.

Over the next few sessions students will discuss and practise a range of skills and strategies they can adopt when inevitable setbacks occur.

This week we discussed reflection as a way of taking responsibility for our actions and considering how we might alter them in the future. We redefine failure as the absence of effort, recognising that results simply inform us of the next steps to take.

Students are reminded that perseverance is not a case of doing the same thing over and over. Persevering in any situation requires much effort, constant reflection and sometimes a number of strategies.

R U OK? DAYThis Thursday is R U OK? Day and Trinity has been offered the opportunity to participate in an awareness raising activity that is a collaboration between Trinity; StandBy Response Service; and Headspace. Students and staff will be involved in constructing and decorating some small kites. The focus is on positive messages, strategies for caring for self and others and conversations about how we can support ourselves and others. This activity promises to be a fun lunchtime experience that also promotes cooperation between members of our school community. Please refer to the flyer attached.

UNIFORMAs you would be aware Summer uniform officially began for students on Monday.

I was very impressed with the students’ presentation last week, the vast majority of students most definitely ‘looked the part’ for College photos. There does however appear to be an increasing trend of students wearing long sleeved under shirts that are clearly visible when worn with the uniform. In addition students have been reminded of the requirements regarding the required foot wear to be worn with the sports uniform. Given the nature of activities engaged in it is important that students wear a supportive sports shoe (e.g. jogger style) to facilitate safe participation in a variety of activities. It appears that some students have been wearing ‘casual style’ footwear that does not meet the uniform requirements. I would ask for your support in assisting students to abide by our current uniform requirements and as students have been told many times, when in uniform they are not only representing themselves but also the School and other members of the College community. Thank you for your assistance in attending to these issues if they apply.

2016/2017 SRCCongratulations to the students who have been elected as members of the Student Representative Council. Mr Tony Flood

YEAR 11 EXAMSYear 11 commenced their End of Preliminary exams on Monday. This is a good chance to see where they are at before the beginning of the HSC course in Term 4.

PARENT TEACHER NIGHTSThe dates for the parent teacher nights are as follows:-

• 3.40pm Thursday, 20th October

• 3.40pm Tuesday 25th October

• 3.40pm Thursday 27th October

YEAR 12 END OF COURSE RANKSYear 12 students will receive a rank letter this week. It will tell them what place they came at the end of the HSC course for every one of their subjects.

INDEPENDENT LEARNERSThe Heads of Department and Heads of House have been discussing how we encourage students to be independent learners. Students who are prepared to make mistakes and learn from them. Into 2017 we will be looking at our expectations and how we facilitate the process of learning not the regurgitation of facts.

The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn. – Alvin Toffler (futurist and author of Future Shock and The Third Wave).

Write a Book in a Day for the Kid’s Cancer Project

The Write a Book in a Day competition held on Wednesday, 24th August was a rousing success. Picture the scene: nine students stuck in one room for 12 solid hours, a deadline looming and an enormous task ahead, with an anxious Miss Hunter lurking in the shadows and trying to remind herself that she wasn’t allowed to help…

The parameters were tricky, with a great uncle, an auctioneer and a carnivorous plant thrown together on Mt Kosciusko with love thick in the air. The Trinity Catholic College team knew that only careful teamwork, outstanding literary creativity and copious amounts of tea could get them through this one.

And thus the classic story of Ol’ Hek, Karl and Alex Jones the Auctioneer was born. C’é sempre speranza (There is always hope) will be available in the libraries on both sites, as well as here for those curious lovers of fiction: C’é sempre speranza.

Our cake stalls two days later were also wonderfully successful. Despite Miss Hunter’s baking mishaps the students pulled through and cupcakes, brownies and tasty vegan cake sold out before lunch was even halfway through. Including the competition entry fees, our Write a Book in a Day team donated a total of $476.30 to the Kid’s Cancer Project.

Congratulations to Eden Jones, Grace Spencer, Frewoini Baume, Coby Barnard, Jessica Powell, James Sanderson, Emily Speak, Digby Mercer and Emily Williams. Judging should be finished in October and we await a great result.

Heartfelt thanks must also go to our generous sponsors who have donated online. Online donations remain open until the end of September, so if you would like to contribute, please go to www.writeabookinaday.com and click on the “Sponsor a Team” link. You will then need to select NSW and find Trinity Catholic College in the list.

Miss Jessica Hunter

Illustrating Magic

The always important Planning Stage

YEAR 7 MASTERCHEF

Year 7 recently completed a task on nutritious meal planning using the Australian Dietary Guidelines and an understanding of the nutrients as a guide. Part of the task requires students to plan and cook a meal at home for their family.

The most outstanding meals are chosen from each class to go into a MasterChef final where our College Canteen Manager, Mrs Wotherspoon, picks out a ‘winner’ whose meal will be sold at the canteen for a day!

Mrs Wotherspoon commented that the standard of all meals was excellent and the decision really came down to which meal could easily be prepared and was economically viable in a school canteen setting.

Maddy Martin-Ryan, Lily Farmer, Grace Ledwith, Clarry Nelson, Charlie Blok, Lily Heath, Tulsi Smith, Ruby Parker, Kane Lawson, Oliver Davies, Sarah Edwards, Eliotte Walford-Smith are to be commended on their projects.

Congratulations to this year’s winner, Alex Coleman, and look out for Moroccan Lamb Kofta with honey pistachios at the canteen later this term!

SHINE CONFERENCE 2016

The annual CSYMA Shine Conference was held over two days on 18th - 19th August in Coffs Harbour at St John Paul College. Shine is an event that brings together CSYMA (Catholic Schools Youth Ministry Australia) students from across the Diocese of Lismore. The event celebrates the Faith of our Youth. The theme this year was “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy” Matthew 5:7.

Students were kept engaged through a variety of activities including a Youth Rally led by Emmanuel Worship which included Adoration, dramatizations, keynote speakers, workshops and small groups. The keynote speakers for the Conference were Kym Keady from RealTalk Australia and Fr Morgan Batt from the Archdiocese of Brisbane. Fr Morgan is the only Catholic priest to celebrate Mass on top of Mt Everest! The Conference concluded on the Friday afternoon with Mass in the school Hall at St John Paul College.

Shine allowed our CSYMA students to connect with other students in the program from other Catholic High Schools as well as providing reflective time for them to deepen their relationship with Christ. My thanks to the students for the way they represented our College at this Conference. I also extend a thank you to Mrs Karen Davies, Assistant Principal Senior School and Mrs Clare Axman, Liturgy and Ministry Coordinator for also attending the Conference.

If you are a Year 8 family and would like more information about the CSYMA Program, please contact me via email – [email protected].

Year 12 McColl Dinner

Recently Year 12 McColl Tutor Group gathered for a special dinner at the Italo Club to celebrate the end of their Trial exams and them nearing the completion of their formal schooling. Their tutor, Mrs Narissa Phelps, has been with the group since Year 7 and has proudly watched them grow into the wonderful group of young adults that they are. Also celebrating with the group were Mrs Lisa Yopp the Head of McColl House and Mrs Zelinda Brown, the previous Head of McColl, both of whom wished the group their best in their preparation for their up-coming HSC exams. Mr Travis Lyon, the Year 11 McColl tutor was also in attendance. It was so nice to all be together and enjoy a meal and each others’ company before the formalities of the group graduating. In our thoughts on the evening too were all those who have already left school for other pathways and our friend Rhys Holland who sadly left us in Year 8. Only a few more weeks of schooling to go!

Mrs Narissa Phelps - Tutor Teacher

UN Youth Voice The UN Youth Voice competition is a public speaking competition that asks contestants to present innovative solutions to some of the most prominent and pressing issues in the world today. The competition encourages initiative and sustainability, rewarding substance in speeches as well as speaking manner and structure.

Students are invited to select the issue about which they are most passionate from four provided topics. The aim is to suggest tangible and achievable solutions to the complications surrounding that topic. This is presented through a prepared speech, with a judges’ “Question Time” component. Students in Years 7 & 8 must speak for 3 minutes, and those in Years 9 & 10 must speak for 5 minutes.

Topics include poverty, homelessness, engaging young people in the political process, encouraging females to work and study in STEM and promoting gender equality, to name a few.

This year Trinity will be hosting the UN Youth Voice competition in the Jubilee Centre, Saturday 15th October. Students from other local schools will also be invited to participate. If you make it through this round, the semi final and grand final rounds are held in late October.

To find out more or register to participate, go to UN Youth QLD’s website.

On 2nd July a group of 17 Modern History students from Years 11 and 12 embarked on a trip to Vietnam with Mrs O’Reilly and Mr Smith. This was a 10-day voyage of discovery where we immersed ourselves in all things Vietnamese.

When we landed in Hanoi, the capital in the North, we could immediately distinguish between Australia and Vietnam…from the constant beeping of annoying motorbikes to the yellow and red communist propaganda.

In Hanoi we visited the preserved body of past Communist leader Ho Chi Minh, known as “the Father of Vietnam,” and various museums, including the “Hanoi Hilton” where the Vietnamese imprisoned captured US pilots. We learnt about the consequences of war whilst experiencing first hand the weaponry and tactics used by both the Vietnamese and Americans forces.

Our tour guide, nicknamed Q-Tip due to his minimal hair and stout appearance that drew comparison to the ear cleaning product, stayed with us and shared his wisdom on Vietnamese history, culture and much, much more – for the entire trip.

Other highlights from our experience in the North of Vietnam included our tourist trip to Ha-long Bay, plus the phenomenal volumes of food.

Once we arrived in the south, in Ho Chi Minh City or Saigon, we met another eccentric tour guide: Wombat. Wombat guided us through the former Australian Military Base at Nui Dat and took us to the Battle of Long Tan Memorial, where we held a service in honour of the Australians who died there. This battle’s 50th anniversary was celebrated on 18th August, and we have just learned that a number of Australian vets received the Victoria Cross medals as a result of their involvement in this battle, which saw 108 ANZACs take on a Viet Cong force up to 2,500. We were also lucky enough to go to the Cu Chi tunnels where we crawled through the same 250km web of tunnels that Vietnamese soldiers and civilians lived in during the war.

Overall this trip was an experience of a life-time and a valuable resource for our studies. In HSC Modern History, the Vietnam War and Ho Chi Minh take up 50% of the course time, so we are very fortunate to have undertaken this trip. The experience also reminded us of the horrors of war, the sacrifices made by many for our modern-day freedoms, and the true senselessness of war and violence. I don’t think any of us will ever think about war in the same way again after visiting the very confronting War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh at the end of our trip.

We would like to extend our gratitude to Brother John for allowing us to undertake this adventure and to Mrs O’Reilly and Mr Smith for taking us to another country to truly “live the history”.

Mr Ferderer’s Year 7 Mandatory Technology classes have been busy learning about the Built Environment. Researching about how an Interior Designer contributes to society. Using scale and measurement to design a model of their dream bedroom. Planning, drawing and creating a floor plan, using an online program to design their room and then using Google Sketchup to create a 3 dimensional plan. As well as using lots of scrap pine to create bedroom furniture for their dream room model based on these designs and plans.

2016 YMCA JUNIOR YOUTH PARLIAMENTIsobel Gregg, Year 7 McColl has been selected to represent the seat of Lismore in the 2016 NSW Junior Youth Parliament as a Junior Member of Parliament (JMP).

The NSW Junior Parliament is a program that gives young people a voice in the running of NSW. The program fosters a direct and engaging dialogue about youth concerns with community groups and State Members of Parliament.

JMPs are exposed to education concerning parliamentary processes, etiquette and policy development. JMPs are divided into Committees and are tasked with developing Bills detailing pertinent issues and work together to improve the solutions.

All Bills will be debated in NSW Parliament House by the JMPs under the rules and procedures practiced by our State members of Parliament. Debates are usually chair by members of the NSW Parliament. At the conclusion of Junior Parliament the Bills will be presented do both Government and Opposition MPs for their consideration.

To apply, each candidate had to identify two issues that were important to them and identify potential solutions. Isobel’s two issues were the:

• impact of skipping breakfast on learning and health

• need for humane pig farming practices

Isobel will be a member of the Education Committee and will work with a group of young people from across the state to draft legislation relating to an important education matter.

Junior Youth Parliament is held over 6 nights during the September school holidays in Sydney. Two of these days are spent in parliament presenting and debating Bills.

We wish the junior member for Lismore, the Honourable Isobel Gregg luck and look forwarding to receiving a full report when she returns.

Another Science Week has flown by. This year’s theme was Drones, Droids and Robots. Please enjoy the photos and stories of the various events. A big thank you to all of the staff and students involved.

Sheila Martineau - Head of Science

QUESTACONOn Monday 29th August 3 groups of students were invited to attend the Questacon Smart skills workshop. Students started the day with an introduction to the design process, developed their skills by solving a series of challenges on the excellent app (Brain it on) and then moved onto the practical challenge. With an instruction like ‘Can you build a complex machine to complete a simple task such as ring a bell’ students were given a bag of mystery objects and an hour to build a Rube Goldberg machine. Students worked in pairs to construct a machine with at least 3 steps, toppling dominos, moving toy cars, levers, pulleys and other ingenious ideas. They started with their goal and then worked backwards. It was great fun, students managed to achieve some great work, share ideas and critically evaluate their work to review the innovation process. The Science and Technology departments would like to thank; Questacon for providing such a well-resourced and enjoyable program and the staff and students for their enthusiasm.

Mrs Kate Ashdown SCIENCE WEEK – DRONE DEMO AND DESIGN-A-DROID COMPETITION

Professional drone operator Wayne Chambers treated Trinity students to a live drone demonstration for Science Week. Mr Chambers shared his extensive knowledge of drone and camera equipment and its operation with a large number of students. The discussion ended with a live demonstration on the school oval (Mr Chambers is licenced to fly in restricted airspace) with some happy snaps taken of students in attendance.

Mr Chambers’ demonstration was the inspiration behind Trinity’s Design-a-Droid competition, which generated an incredibly diverse array of ideas and designs. The winner of the competition, as judged by a number of staff members, was

Lily Laughton from Year 7 with a very unique aquaculture design. Lily is the worthy recipient of a $20 iTunes voucher - well done Lily! Gabe Halligan’s aquaculture design was also very interesting, as was Oisin Mules-Sherrin novel spin on an existing drone design - a restaurant sauce dispenser named “The Flying Saucer”. I can sense some talented inventors rising through Year 7.

The 2016 Nagle Education Alliance Australia (NEAA) Student Leadership Conference was held recently at Avilla College, Mt Waverley in Melbourne. Five Year 10 students, Tara Cocciola, Zoe Coles, Sarah Davis, Zali Drew and Jenna Robinson admirably represented Trinity and were great ambassadors for the College. They were accompanied by Mrs Nevin Foster and Sister Mary Bruggy.

The Conference theme “You’re the Voice…”encouraged participants to take forward Nano Nagle’s message of justice, compassion and care for others and our world. Around 100 students from Presentation Secondary Colleges across Australia came together for the three days to explore the theme in different ways. Slam poetry, guest speakers, acts of service, Eucharist, social time, a trip into the heart of Melbourne and making new friends all made the Conference one to remember.

Today the dream of Nano is being born anew in our world with her lantern light of hope shining brightly in the lives and hearts of young people who are responding to the needs around them.

The girls came away with a greater sense of mission for the charism of Nano and with ideas that they hope will become reality in our own school community.

The Nagle Education Alliance Australia Conference gave me a chance to connect and network with like minded people. People who aspire to be leaders, great role models and the voice for those who do not have a voice. I gained an increased understanding of the application of Presentation values in contemporary situations and to strive to self-identify as a ‘presentation person.’ This conference gave me the supporting foundations of motivation to put my words into actions and to live a life to serve others. The conference granted me an opportunity to hear the ideas and thoughts from leading experts, allowing me to learn something new and to gain relevant and practical advice that I will be able to implement into our school community. Tara Cocciola - Year 10

The acts of service were a highlight in the trip for me. I really enjoyed knowing that the care packages we put together would really help some one. We were very thankful to the girls at Avilla who collected all the things we were able to put

into the care packs. This highlighted Nano’s service to others and was a clear example of what she strode for in her life. Zali Drew - Year 10

The girls were wonderful representatives of the College and their maturity and dedication to the charism of Nano Nagle in keeping her spirit alive was evident and noted by the host school and participants. Mrs Nevin Foster - Teacher

Why Parents Matter

A warm welcome all parents and caregivers in our parish schools to attend this FREE event.

An Australian based youth behaviour expert, Chris’ passion is for adults to discover the life defining impact they can have on the teenagers in their lives. A professional youth worker for over 10 years, Chris has witnessed the profound difference an adult can make in a teenager’s life. He firmly believes that when a teenager has adults around them who relate confidently and communicate clearly, their chances of finding happiness and purpose are significantly increased. Chris delivers insights that are engaging and especially relevant for today.

Be your Best is an incentive program to encourage all students to be the best person they can. Each fortnight teachers are asked to notice students who are displaying the focus quality and to distribute about 4 tokens to each of their classes. The focus qualities change from fortnight to fortnight cycling through; Being Respectful, Being Responsible, Being Reconciling, Being Just and Fair and Being Hopeful. All of these comprise the values that we nurture in our students within our classes.

When students receive a token they place it in the Token box at the office of their Head of House. Twice per term, each House makes two draws from the Token box and those whose tokens are drawn are awarded a $20 canteen voucher. The tokens are all kept and on the last day of the school year, 5 tokens are drawn from all the tokens collected throughout the year, with the lucky owners winning an iPad each.

Congratulations to the students listed below, who received tokens during the first 5 weeks of Term 3.

THE NATIONAL SELF-DETECTION PROGRAM FOR SCOLIOSIS

It is now well establ ished that early detection of scoliosis, and t r e a t m e n t w h e r e i n d i c a t e d , result in more s u c c e s s f u l m e d i c a l o u t c o m e s . This is the basis of screening adolescent girls for scoliosis. As such, The National Self-Detection Program for Scoliosis was introduced for the target age group (11-14 years of age) to screen for the outward signs of scoliosis.

Girls in Year 7 and 9 will be issued with a brochure outlining the self-detection process. If a girl or her parents think she may have a curvature then follow-up with the family doctor is recommended.

The program is endorsed by the Paediatrics and Child Health Division of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. More information about the program can be found here: http://www.scoliosis-australia.org
