EXECUTIVE REPORT

This week marked National Sorry Day on Wednesday as well as the start of Reconciliation

Week which began on Thursday. Year 8 HSIE classes have been studying this and to rec-

ognise these events, have created a Sorry Walk along the current main entry to the

school. Each student created a hand explaining what Reconciliation and Sorry Day means

to them. Aboriginal students in the school also participated in a Yarn Up at the Yarning

Circle to discuss the significance of these events.

As you may be aware, there is some more construction happening at the school. We are

very fortunate to be receiving continuing works to increase the functionality and aes-

thetics of the school. The roof on yelgun and gooyumgun as well as budjarahm are being

replaced and we are getting a new entry including covered walkway to ngulungmay . Of

course, this does create a small amount of disruption within the school with the biggest

change being the entry to the school. We do request that all visitors enter from the bus

bay and make their way straight to the front office to sign in or speak with the office

staff.

Today the whole school attended Riverview Park to participate in the annual athletics carnival. After not being able to conduct

last year’s event due to Covid-19 restrictions, it was fabulous to see the level of engagement and healthy competition amongst

students as well as houses. Well done to the year 12’s for their amazing display as superheros as their theme this year. Even Mr

Jeffrey almost looked like he could save the world if need be!!! I want to say a big thankyou to Mr. French for his organisation of

the day along with all staff for helping to set up and pack away for the day and ensuring that all events run smoothly.

LHC has a proud tradition in many ways and this includes ensuring all students attend school all the time, attend all their classes,

participate in their learning and wear school uniform. Coming into some cooler weather, we have noticed an increase in some

non-uniform items, namely jumpers and in particular hoodies. If you would like some support with uniform items for your child,

please feel free to contact one of the Deputies to discuss possible options.

The Year 7 Laptop Program is well underway, and it is pleasing to see how many families have taken up this exciting option. If

you would like more information about this program, please contact the school.

YOUNG INNOVATORS

Young Change Agents Incubator Three Day Program During a three-day incubator program at Southern Cross University, two teams from Lismore High Campus participated in a crash course on how to start a business and how to develop ideas into practical and workable prototypes. Both teams developed apps and presentations in order to present for the next stage of judging. The Incubator Program and a previous day long workshop, were both arranged and presented by the Young Change Agents, who work to provide opportunities and skills to school age children. This program is part of a nation-wide competition that incorporates a variety of skills for business, pitching, and proto-typing, with experts and mentors helping to develop skills in marketing, design, prototyping, budgeting, pitching, customer satisfaction and validation. Each stage provides new skills and applications. Chillara Ackrell and Madison Love (Year 9)

The FAR NORTH COAST DANCE FESTIVAL 2021

On Thursday 20 May, 30 students from Lismore High Campus participated in the Far North Coast Dance Festival. The Festival, held over three days, saw the participation of hundreds of students across the region. This year the festival was held at Lismore City Hall. Students hopped on the bus at Lismore High in the morning and were driven down to sit in on the safety briefing. The day kicked off with the technical rehearsal. Students were lucky enough this year to sit in on the rehearsals, which means they were able to watch the dances that made up the show for that evening. For lunch the Lismore High Campus dancers walked their way over to Dirty’s for some tasty burgers. The students had a chance to chill out and have a meal with their friends before we were off again back to rehearsals. Thank you to the Dirty’s crew for a delicious lunch with amaz-ing service! Backstage saw a flurry of students putting on makeup and doing a final quick rehearsal before being lined up side stage and sat in the wings. Lismore High Campus had a bit of a wobbly re-hearsal as students adapted to being on stage in costume with lights and sound. The dancers were supported by the wonderful stage crew and made it through the rehearsal. Fast forward a few hours and the dancers have done their hair, their make up and are gathering at the fountain outside Lismore City Hall. We all sang Kim happy birthday and then it was down to business. A quick warm up and rehearsal next to the fountain and then we were off to the dressing rooms backstage and before we knew it, onto the stage. First up were the lovely hosts of the evening Sophie and Sabrina. Thank you to these girls as well as Jaidyn for hosting the evening. Sabrina stepped in at the last minute and saved the day to host the evening. Then it was time for the Year 10 Elective Dance class made up of Lara, Cyla, Payton, Shaniequa, Tahla, Kiera, Wanika, Chloe and Georgia to perform. Their dance item ‘Natures Finest’ was devel-oped during class as part of the performance unit. This dance explores items found in nature like sticks, rocks, flowers and vines. It is a smooth flowing dance that shows how things grow and move. The use of cannons is a prominent choreographic choice, which drives the intent of growth and movement of elements of nature. Year 10 performed spectacularly with not a count out of place. Well done Year 10! A few performances later and it was time for Year 12 and Year 9 Elective Dance to perform. There were a few nerves from the performers, as for some of them, it was their first dance per-formance. For most of our Year 12’s it was their sixth and final performance at the festival. They lined the stairwell and were called into the wings where they silently waited before being called onto the stage. The lights went up and they were on! Their dance explores the concept of breath and is performed to a slow song filled with whispers and chimes. The costumes accentuate the intent as the long wispy strands of tulle tied onto the dancer’s wrists, flow effortlessly with each arm movement allowing one motion to flow into the next. A near perfect run of the dance left a long lasting impression with parents and guests, who came along to see the show. Excellent job by our first-time performers and a beautiful last performance by our Year 12’s Zoe, Kydan and Trisha. For those parents and friends who were unable to attend the festival this year, a video of the performance will be available on the school’s Facebook page shortly. Thank you to all the performers and to Mr Jeffery who did a last minute bus trip for us. A special thank you to Miss Morris, who assisted on the day driving the bus, supervising and bringing some great energy and support to all on the day.

Ms Grays’s Year 7 class personalised a muffin recipe and came up with their own original muffins,

which they then cooked and presented. We had a great variety of muffins, including cranberry and

white chocolate, orange and poppyseed, bacon, zucchini and cheese, cinnamon and apple, banana

and choc-chip. Below are photographs of some of their finished products.

STUDY SKILLS TIPS - TOP TIPS FOR A NEW YEAR

Working through the units on www.studyskillshandbook.com.au throughout this year will help you build skills and learn tech-niques to become more effective learners. We encourage all students and parents to log into the site and browse the units to become familiar with the topics covered. Also click on THINGS TO PRINT after you log in, scroll to the bottom of the page and you will find lots of useful grids and planners to help you.

Top five tips about making the most of your time at school this year and working efficiently at home.

1. INDEPENDENT LEARNING: There are two types of work in secondary school. The compulsory work that your teacher tells you to do, and independent learning that you are expected to do when you have no homework. You can print a handout that will give you examples of the types of things you are supposed to be doing for school when you have no homework.

2. WORK SMART: If you want to still have a life, but get your home learning done (for most students this will be 1-2 hours per night) then you need to work smart. Keep your personal life and schoolwork separate. Don’t do work in front of the TV, switch off your phone and take a little break from social media. Work in half hour blocks and focus only on your schoolwork during that half hour block. If you are super busy with lots of activities then a great idea is to draw up a timetable for the week and allocate time for schoolwork over the week. You might like to visit these units on the site: Time Management Skills, Dealing with Distractions, Overcoming Procrastination.

3. BE ORGANISED AND PLAN: Being organised makes your life easier! So have an organised space to work in, record homework in your diary, keep track of completed work and reschedule work not done. When you are told about a test or an assignment, plan the work out to be done over the available time. Make the most of your time in class, being organised and focused in the classroom means you will find it easier to complete your work and work on big things like assessments at home. Check out these units on the site: Home Study Environment, Organisation and Filing, Managing Workload, Using Class-time.

4. ASK FOR HELP EARLY: If you don’t understand something, ask for help. The sooner the better. If there isn’t time in class see your teacher before or after class or during the break times. No-one expects you to do things on your own. One of the most important contributors to being successful academically is to ask for help often and early. See if your school offers extra sup-port or has a homework help service. And don’t forget family and friends, they might know more than you think! There is a unit on the site all about Asking for Help.

5. LEARN HOW TO STUDY PROPERLY: If you still think that to study for a test you just read your book over and over, time to learn how smart people study! The main things to remember about study for a test are: Make study notes or summaries first (write down in point form what you need to learn), learn these notes not just by reading but by testing yourself on them and do as many different questions as you can as practise. You can learn more from these units: Summarising, Active Studying, Pre-paring for Exam Blocks,Test-Taking Techniques, Your Brain and Memory.

STUDY SKILLS TIP (2) - SET TIMES FOR HOME LEARNING

PARENTS: Many students come home from school and end up just waiting until they might ‘feel’ like doing schoolwork. Or else they drag everything out over the whole night. A much better way is each night have set allocated times for home learn-ing. Many students find that learning in 20-30 minute blocks works well for them. During this time students should do home-work first, then work on any assignments or upcoming tests, then use the rest of the time allocated for schoolwork to com-plete independent learning activities such as reviewing work they find difficult, making study notes or doing practice ques-tions to build their skills. All distractions should be removed during this time, so students learn to focus for 20-30 minute blocks of time. It is a great idea to make a timetable of the home learning and place it on the fridge so everyone is clear when students are focusing and when they are doing other activities or having free time.

STUDENTS: Some of the benefits for students of having set times allocated for home learning are:

• You are more likely to learn at home if you know when to start and when to end.

• You will be more effective when you remove distractions and learn to focus for 20-30 minute blocks.

• In all the times NOT allocated to schoolwork you can do whatever you like without feeling guilty about it.

• Having set times stops arguments between students and parents as everyone has agreed when the timeslots allocated to students will be.

• You know that you are definitely doing enough work for school.

Keeping your home learning and personal life separate means you will be able to manage all of the distractions in your life and still complete your work for school.

Learn more this year about how to improve your results and be more efficient and effective with your schoolwork by working through the units on www.studyskillshandbook.com.au .
