From the Principal Trinity Catholic College Lismore the Lantern No. 6 Week Two Term Two Tuesday, 3rd May, 2016 Dear Parents/Carers, PENTECOST SUNDAY THIS YEAR IS ON SUNDAY 15TH MAY Two thousand years ago a small group of Jewish people was very much wondering what life was all about. They were hiding in a small house, anxious, perplexed and in fear of their own lives. Their leader, who had been their inspiration, had been executed, had come back to them in a mysterious resurrected form and then, had ascended into the clouds before their very eyes. Their lives were in turmoil. Things had been going so well for the past three years and now disaster. And what were they to make of Jesus’ words to them, “I am going to the Father but I will send you the Holy Spirit”? Little did the Apostles realise they were about to have their very own “Extreme Makeover.” When the Spirit did come to them, they heard the sound of a rushing wind and saw tongues of fire above each other’s head; but what they felt was a total internal transformation. From their mouths came words they had never heard before and understanding that came from a source beyond their means. They were filled with joy, their fear was gone, all negativity had vanished and they were completely unconcerned about themselves. They were flabbergasted but totally inspired. They left their hiding place and relished the crowds that came to them; by the end of the day, they had baptised three thousand people. They had become other Christs in the world and would continue to do His work till, like Him, most were executed. “We Christians, who bear the name of Christ, who were baptised into Christ, we are to become Christlike. The only way to become Christlike is to act like Christ, to have Christlike character traits and Christlike ideals. We are called to be people of mercy and forgiveness, people of compassion and generosity, people concerned about others and not just about ourselves where we are always the centre of attention.” Father Don Ware C.P. ANZAC DAY CEREMONIES My thanks to the many students and staff who proudly marched on Anzac Day in support of our past and present service men and women. We had students march in Kyogle, Woodburn, Ballina, Alstonville, Coraki, Casino and Lismore. In total there were almost 350 students who marched. The College celebrated Anzac Day last Friday during our Assembly in the Trinity Sports Centre. Once again the ceremony was a fitting memorial and a wonderful tribute to our service men and women and a testament to our students who were reverent and respectful throughout the entire ceremony. These sentiments were echoed by all the invited guests I spoke to during the light lunch that followed the ceremony. I would like to offer my sincere thanks to all those who had any part in our Anzac ceremony as well as all who helped prepare for and organise the ceremony. In particular, I thank: Our invited guests - especially our guest of honour Major Susana Henderson Each of the Veterans present Our College Leaders, the musicians, the choir, those who read, those involved with the sound and PowerPoint

Dear Parents/Carers,

PENTECOST SUNDAY THIS YEAR IS ON SUNDAY 15TH MAYTwo thousand years ago a small group of Jewish people was very much wondering what life was all about.

ANZAC DAY CEREMONIESMy thanks to the many students and staff who proudly marched on Anzac Day in support of our past and present service men and women. We had students march in Kyogle, Woodburn, Ballina, Alstonville, Coraki, Casino and Lismore. In total there were almost 350 students who marched.

I would like to offer my sincere thanks to all those who had any part in our Anzac ceremony as well as all who helped prepare for and organise the ceremony.

BISHOP JOHN SATTERTHWAITEThe local community was saddened this week to hear the news of the passing of Bishop John. He was the fourth Bishop of Lismore and served the Diocese as Bishop for over 30 years. Bishop John was Bishop during the years after the Second Vatican Council and led the Church in Lismore through the changes brought about by the Council. Please pray for Bishop John, his family and all who knew him.

YEAR 7 2017 ENROLMENT PROCESS AND OPEN NIGHT This year Open Night will be held on Tuesday 17th May 2016 and we look forward to celebrating ‘our College’ with you on the evening.

While many of the activities are oriented towards Year 6 students looking at Year 7, we also invite families who are looking at other Year levels in 2017 or considering the College as a secondary school for their son or daughter in years to come. We also extend an invitation to those families who already have children at the College, as we believe it is important that all prospective students have the opportunity to experience Open Night, hear from existing students and ask questions of staff.

STUDENT ATTENDANCEChanges to Government regulations relating to school attendance means that family holidays and travel are no longer considered an exemption from school procedures and any absence, as a result of a holiday and travel, will be recorded as an approved absence from school. As such, the duration of these absences will now appear on the student’s report as explained absences.

Parents were recently emailed copies of the two leave application forms and these are also available on the College web site.

For absences relating to a medical reason no form is required. Please email or write to the student’s Head of House and tutor and provide a medical certificate for an extended period of time.

Take care and God bless,

Brother John Hilet, fmsPrincipal

STUDENT WORKBOOKS ARE STILL INVALUABLE

The beginning of any new school Term is a chance to take stock and re-focus, making sure we are prepared appropriately for the coming Term. Have we got all of our books? Are they up-to-date and in good condition? Do we have pens, pencils and necessary equipment?

We live in interesting times in a world where technology is becoming ever more ubiquitous. It is possible for every Trinity student to access an Internet-enabled device whilst at school. ICT is a fantastic resource and allows for creativity and connectivity like never before, yet a lot of research is reporting that, if a person really wishes to retain information, and access higher-order thinking, they should take notes by hand. Mueller and Oppenheimer (2014), as cited in May (2014), report that students who take notes on laptops perform worse on conceptual questions than those who take notes by hand. Taking notes by hand requires a certain amount of “brain work” or cognitive load to interpret what is being presented and to make note of it. This ‘effort’ makes it much more likely students will remember what they have written.

We are constantly critically reviewing educational research. In light of this, it is still vital that students have well maintained, deliberate and well organised hand written notes as part of their learning experience. Hence, over the coming weeks all teachers will be taking the opportunity of a new Term to ensure that students have the appropriate workbook for the class that they are in, and continuing to encourage them to see the importance of these notes and take pride in their bookwork. It is far more effective and efficient in preparing for an upcoming task or exam to review a complete and coherent set of personal notes.

Director of Pedagogy

Dear Parents,

According to the National Eating Disorders Collaboration NEDC Australia, eating disorders can occur in people of all ages. However adolescents and young people are increasingly at risk, with eating disorders having a significant and underestimated impact on Australian Society. Having the correct information and education about eating disorders can help prevent an eating disorder from developing, ease the suffering of a person in the early stages of an eating disorder, and reduce the stigma and misconceptions that surround eating disorders. The NEDS has identified a number of misconceptions about eating

disorders, where they come from and why they are not true.

www.nedc.com.au/myths-about-eating-disorders This comprehensive website is excellent. I recommend the resources section and a booklet entitled Eating Disorders in Schools: Prevention, Early detection and Response. The Parents/Guardians section contains an excellent resource entitled, Caring for Someone with an Eating Disorder.

The Victorian Centre for Excellence in Eating Disorders has also developed a new resource accessible on line. It consists of a series of questions and then produces a report – either for the GP or for the parent/carer – with suggestions about what to do.

For the GP it highlights when it is important to act.

For parents it makes suggestions with eating, wellbeing, thinking and feeling. http://feedyourinstinct.com.au/about-ceed

As a parent/guardian/friend, if you have concerns about your young person after reading this material or they themselves have voiced concerns, please seek the assistance from your GP. This first step can make all the difference.

All the best for the Term and please note the date of an excellent parent evening coming up on Building Resilience.

Sr. Mary Bruggy Parent Connect Co-ordinator

Parent Connect

Welcome back to Term 2. I hope the recent holidays gave all students a chance to recharge their enthusiasm and motivation for school and that Term 2 will be a positive experience for all.

ANZAC MARCHIt was wet, it was at the end of a holiday period, it was a year after the 100 Year Anzac celebration - enough reasons for students to stay away and not participate but they did participate in big numbers. We had about 300 students participate in the Lismore March with other students adding to the numbers in their local marches. Thanks to those students who were involved with the College. I am certainly proud of you. All students who marched will soon receive community service hours and will earn points for their House in the Delaney cup.

YEAR 7 HANDOVERLast Monday we had a short handover service to mark the movement of Year 7 students from the care of Mrs Gill-Andrews to their respective Head of House. Thanks to Mrs Gill-Andrews our Year 7 students (and their parents) have developed a solid understanding of Trinity and are now in a position where they can function like all other students. Parents needing to contact the College about their child are asked to work through either their child’s Tutor or Head of House.

BRAINSTORMAs part of our pastoral programme in Years 7 -11 we utilise the services of Brainstorm who present a play to each year group. Last Monday Year 7 students were entertained by a play called ‘The Hurting Game’. If you are a parent of a Year 7 child please ask them about the play as there is normally something in it for everyone. Year 10 will be the next group to view a show on Friday 13th May.

YEAR 8 MOTHERS’ DAY MASSMums, you are invited to a Mass with your Year 8 son/daughter this Friday in the Cathedral. It would be great if you could attend the Mass and share lunch with your child afterwards.

WINTER UNIFORMAt this stage the planned start date for the compulsory wearing of the Winter uniform is Monday 30th May . Should it turn cold prior to this date then we may move the start date forward. In the meantime all students are asked to locate their winter uniform and take steps to ensure all is in readiness for it to be worn.

BE YOUR BESTToday in the Lantern you will find a list naming all students who received Be Your Best tokens in the last half of Term 1. Congratulations to all of these students who do the small things well and in doing so make a positive contribution to the College. During weeks 1 and 2 of this Term, the focus has been on Being Respectful and Reconciling and in Weeks 3 and 4 the focus shifts to Being Responsible and Fair.

DELANEY CUPIs your House still in the running for a trip to Wet’n’Wild? Lots more points are yet to be added to this graph and students are encouraged to do their best and be involved.

Be Your Best

BE YOUR BESTBe your Best is an incentive program to encourage all students to be the best person they can. Each fortnight teachers are asked to notice students who are displaying the focus quality and to distribute about 4 tokens to each of their classes. The focus qualities change from fortnight to fortnight cycling through; Being Respectful, Being Responsible, Being Reconciling, Being Just and Fair and Being Hopeful. All of these comprise the values that we nurture in our students within our classes.

When students receive a token they place it in the Token box at the office of their Head of House. Twice per term, each House makes two draws from the Token box and those whose tokens are drawn are awarded a $20 canteen voucher. The tokens are all kept and on the last day of the school year, 5 tokens are drawn from all the tokens collected throughout the year, with the lucky owners winning an iPad each.

Congratulations to the students listed below, who received tokens during the last 5 weeks of Term 1.

NAPLAN – Year 7 and Year 9NAPLAN will take place next week.

PYJAMA PARTYYear 9 Textiles Technology class has been designing and sewing their own Pyjama pants. The students commenced their project with a source of inspiration, progressed through to design development and very excitedly began sewing their PJs. They have done an outstanding job considering for most students this was their first sewing experience.

Their dedication and commitment to learn has resulted in very cute pyjama pants.

Well done Year 9.

Proclaim Lismore Students

YEAR 11 STREET RETREAT – A PENTECOST EXPERIENCELismore Proclaim Students aims to provide a comprehensive continuum of Intentional Student Discipleship Programs across the Diocese for students from Year 5 to Year 12. These gatherings aim to bring Catholic secondary students together to meet like-minded peers and to celebrate and meet with other young people who practice their faith.

In 2016 (School allocation) Year 11 students from our school will join students from each of the other parish secondary schools in attending the Street Retreat experience in Brisbane. This experience will form, equip and empower students to return to their parish communities with a passion for social justice and greater sense of the call of Jesus Christ to serve the poor.

Participants in the Street Retreat will spend from Thursday night 16 June to Sunday evening 19 June working with a range of social justice initiatives in Brisbane. Their participation may make a small contribution to those being served – but the event is first and foremost an exercise in faith development.

Participants will find the activities on the street retreat challenging and possibly confronting. Many activities run either very late at night or very early in the morning. The retreat will culminate in a celebration of Sunday Eucharist. In addition, all participants must commit to a follow up Social Justice activity to be held in their own parish/school community follow-ing the Brisbane formation experience. Details of these activities will be made available to students upon their selection.

In discerning which students might participate in this retreat experience, the Diocese has recommended the following selection criteria;

- Catholic students who can demonstrate involvement in their parish.- Catholic students who have attended previous student discipleship programs. - Students who exhibit the following attributes:

o a strong sense of social justiceo initiativeo common sense o a mature character

A large number of Trinity students have already expressed an interest in this event. We can, however, only offer 6 plac-es. Any student who would like to be considered is asked to write a brief statement supporting their nomination on the information sheets provided by Mr Luke Miller. Attention should be given to the stated selection criteria. Nominations should be handed to Mr Luke Miller no later than Monday 16 May.

Successful applicants will be asked to make a contribution of $50 towards the cost of this experience.

“Such Sweet Sorrow” ( Romeo and Juliet)

On 5th April, Year 9 were fortunate to have the Players from the Bell Shakespeare Company come to Trinity to put on a performance of one of Shakespeare’s best known plays, Romeo and Juliet. The story line was interesting and the actors put in a lot of hard work to make this show appealing to a younger audience. We followed the story line of how Romeo and Juliet met, the battles between the 2 families and how it tragically ended. The messages were powerful and the words were strong. A very well done performance that everyone enjoyed very much.

Tory Puglisi Year 9

On Tuesday, 5th April, Year 8 went to the Champagnat Theatre to be entertained by four actors from Bell Shakespeare. The show was funny and was worth seeing. The actors presented Romeo and Juliet and they did it really well. The way that they changed scenes and played more than one character was very clever. Romeo and Juliet loved each other, kissed each other and died for each other.

Taylah Bell & Hayden McMaster Year 8

I liked the way the actors depicted the scenes and also how they switched between the Play and Reality. The acting was great!

Nathan Littleford - Year 8

I liked how they changed the set all the time and the way they changed their voices for every character. Blake Edwards - Year 8

The Bell Shakespeare Performance was funny but still got the story across. The actors were great and they played their roles really well!

Fraser Ruane - Year 8

The performance was awesome. I learnt new things about this Shakespeare story e.g. That Juliet was so young. I loved how it was like a romantic comedy. It was a great experience and I would love to see it again

SOLOMON ISLANDS 2016 A remarkable, eye-opening and life changing experience explains our Immersion to the Solomon Islands. A group of 8 students and 3 teachers departed on a 2-week adventure of a lifetime arriving in Honiara on 18th March.

We were greeted at the airport by the local Tenaru students, who kindly escorted us back to St Joseph’s Tenaru. Our first Sunday consisted of the students participating in local tribal dancing and expressing dance moves never before seen by Trinity students. The next week consisted of bonding with the year 10 and year 11 class groups, teaching them games and songs. We worked with the students to plant and harvest rice, cook, and clean the dining area. It was a privilege to be a part of the Tenaru community’s celebration of Easter, we were made to feel very welcome by the students who gave each of us special roles in the Easter celebrations.

The Tuesday of the second week we left for Vasali, with some students from St Joseph’s, which is a Catholic Sister’s community right on a coral reef. We got to know the local sisters and went snorkelling into the unknown depths of the abyss.

Getting to know the Solomon Islander students has changed our lives forever. It has been an amazing experience that we will never forget. We highly recommend this Immersion experience, especially to Year 10 students who can apply for this opportunity later this year.

SANTA TERESA 2016

Imagine a group of 6 students and 2 teachers, setting off to spend 12 days in the middle of Outback Australia helping in an Aboriginal community, an hour South East of Alice Springs.

We spent the first three days of our trip travelling Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon with a group of ‘adventurers’, soaking up as much of the aboriginal culture, native species, the surrounding land and The Dreaming as we could.

We travelled by bus along a bumpy road from Alice Springs to Santa Teresa (Ltyentye Apurte), a wonderful small town filled with many smiling faces and kind, welcoming people.

We spent 8 days in the community helping as much as we could, wherever our services were needed. Our days consisted of early mornings preparing breakfast, morning teas and lunches in the canteen for the children attending school, followed by helping the women in the Women’s Centre collecting blankets from houses and delivering lunch packs to community members, assisting in the classrooms and helping prepare the Church for liturgies and masses for the coming Easter celebrations.

It was a life changing experience to all of us and if given the opportunity I’m sure everyone would do it all again. On behalf on the group, I would recommend this trip to students in Year 10 considering applying for Immersion later this year as it is truly a life changing and eye opening experience.

ST JOSEPH’S TENARU – AUSTRALIAN IMMERSION 2016We have been very fortunate to have an Immersion group from St Joseph’s Tenaru in the Solomon Islands. Two teachers, Mr John Nuu and Madame Salome Lagafoli, and four students spent a week at Trinity. The students were billeted by Trinity students who had been on Immersion to the Solomon Islands both this year and last. The teachers stayed with staff members of Trinity as well as with our Marist Brother community in Lismore. The students and teachers visited classes during the day as well as exploring the Lismore region. On ANZAC Day our visitors marched with our students and staff in Lismore, a highlight for all involved.

Following the march a welcome BBQ was held which was attended by billeting families, staff and students.

Our relationship with St Joseph’s Tenaru has been strengthened by this visit. We look forward to continuing our friendship with the community of Tenaru, Solomon Islands. My thanks to everyone who has contributed to making our guests feel welcome, particularly those who opened their homes to both the students and staff from the Solomon Islands.

This exciting conference is back again in September, starting at the end of the last week of Term 3. The CSO will be organising a trip which is open to students from Year 7-12. The trip will be subsidised by the CSO to make it more affordable and accessible. Student participants will be asked to make a co-contribution of $150.00.
