Service NotesArmy National Guard Pfc. Ryan M. Rounds has graduated from basic

combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mis-

sion, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.

He is the son of Orland Rounds of Adams St., and grandson of Cheryl Rounds of Birchview Heights, both of Westminster, Vt.

Rounds is a 2008 graduate of Bellows Falls Union High School, Westminster.

All You Can Eat Breakfast

The Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post 1938, Valley Falls, N.Y., offer an all you can eat break-fast served buffet style on the second Sunday of each month. Dr. King Colleague and Human Rights Pioneer to Speak at MLK Celebration

Jack Healey called “Mr. Human Rights” by US News & World Report

Jack Healey helped Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. plan the 1963 March on Washington, DC. He also made Amnesty International a household name while serving as its Executive Director. Now, as the founder of the Human Rights Action Center in Washington DC, he’s trying to move the world toward nonviolence by promoting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The Interfaith Council of the Northshire is honored to bring renowned human rights activist Jack Healey to Manchester, Vermont on the occa-sion of Dr. King’s birthday and in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the writing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This special program will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, January 18th at the First Congregational Church in Manchester Village. Admission is free.

“Jack is a humanist in the truest sense of the word, and his struggle to make a better world encompasses his life’s work,” explains Rev. Dr. Steven Berry, pastor of the First Congregational Church, who invited Jack to Manchester. “His goal is to create a universal celebration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by placing it into every passport in the world.” The Declaration was drafted by Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt in 1948 in response to the atrocities of World War II. While signed by nearly every nation in the world, many of those same coun-tries violate the declaration’s principles today. The Interfaith Council hopes that Mr. Healey’s visit to Manchester will help promote the Declaration throughout the state of Vermont.

An ordained Franciscan priest, Jack Healey was inspired by his work with Dr. King in the 1960’s. Since then, he has not only led worldwide non-profits such as Amnesty International and Freedom From Hunger but also created new ways to promote social mission causes. For example, he is credited with devising the idea for a walk-a-thon – now a standard fundraising tool that was first used for Dick Gregory’s World Hunger Run. He also pioneered the use of musical tours and CDs to raise awareness and money for human rights causes that attract-ed talent such as U2, The Police, Bruce Springsteen, Bryan Adams, Miles Davis, Peter Gabriel, Tracy Chapman, and Lou Reed. Proceeds from Jack’s 27-artist, two-disc com-pilation of songs (donated by Paul McCartney, U2, Coldplay, Eric Clapton, Avril Lavigne, and others) will fund the U.S. Campaign for Burma in an effort to free Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi and end the continuing human rights violations in Burma.

January Heats Up at the Courthouse

Mark your calendar for the first 2009 Courthouse event on January 16th. A wonderful collaborative effort has been underway in Salem involving the Historic Salem Courthouse, Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, Salem Rotary Club, and Salem Volunteer Fire Department. Under the direction of Herb Perkins, the focus of this extraordinary effort has been to raise money to assist area resi-dents who need assistance with heating bills. On Friday, January 16, from 5:30 to 6:30, the raffle drawing will take place in the Courthouse Great Hall.. 10 win-ning raffle tickets to benefit the Salem/Shushan Fuel Fund will be drawn with “winner’s choice” of the prizes which include fuel oil, firewood, chimney cleaning, and an electric heater. A selection of soups, bread, cider, and coffee will be served free to attendees. Raffle tickets may be purchased at most Salem businesses or at the Courthouse.

Following the drawing, attend-ees are invited to participate in a “Save Energy, Save Dollars”

workshop from 6:30 to 8:30. The workshop is presented by Cornell Cooperative Extension ( CCE ) as part of the EmPower New York program with funding from NYSERDA. The program if free, but advance registration is required. Singers WelcomeThe Bennington County

Choral Society welcomes new singers as we begin rehearsals for our spring performance of Mozart’s Requiem. Composed in 1791, this composition is recog-nized as one of the masterpieces of the choral repertoire. The choir will be accompanied by a profes-sional orchestra and soloists. The first rehearsal was held Monday, January 5. Membership dues are $20 per concert. Rehearsals are Monday evenings, 7:30-9:30 p.m., at Second Congregational Church, Hillside Street, Benning-ton. Regular attendance of rehearsals is expected. The pri-mary focus of the Bennington County Choral Society is to pro-mote choral singing. There are no auditions. Men and women who can match pitch and are ages 15 and older are encouraged to join regardless of music reading ability.

The Requiem will be per-formed on Saturday, March 28, and Sunday, March 29.

The Cross Cultural Action Network (CCAN) will feature a presentation on the basic legal rights of immigrants at their next meeting on Thursday, January 15th from noon to 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church, 88 South Street, Pittsfield.

CCAN is committed to engag-

ing a diverse group of communi-ty members to discuss and work on cross cultural issues. Basic information on immigrant rights is critical to our understanding of the challenges faced by our new neighbors and friends. Laura Rótolo, a staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union

of Massachusetts and a graduate of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and American University’s Washington College of Law, will present an overview of what agencies and their staff need to know about this impor-tant topic.

In addition, the meeting will

include a celebration of the Welcoming Berkshires campaign that surpassed its goal of 500 pledges in support of the state-wide Welcoming MA initiative and has resulted in Welcoming Community proclamations from three municipalities in the Berkshires -- Pittsfield, North

Adams and Great Barrington. The meeting will also afford

the opportunity to network with more than 40 individuals and agencies that provide services to multicultural populations throughout the county.

CCAN meetings are free and

Karen enjoys one of the most diverse careers in the North Country. She is well known both as a folk singer, and as a singer of the classics. Her long time inter-est in these areas has taken her throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe in concert and study tours. She began her studies in singing at Indiana

University, and completed them at the University of Vermont. In addition to her very active per-forming career in the folk world, she has researched, collected, transcribed, and performed folk songs native to several rural com-munities in North America. She has performed with many groups in the U.S. and abroad, includ-ing the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, Champlain Valley Oratorio Society and the Pitten International Music Festival in Austria.

From my Corner— Susan J. Coons

...gassing up...I’m the first to admit that I

don’t know much about high finance. I know a great deal about the things that I do for a liv-ing, but not about high finance. That’s for aggressive and obnox-ious futures traders; aggressive and egotistical stock and bond traders; some lawyers and a few financial advisors.

In my simple way, in simple terms, I’m going to write this col-umn about mortgages and our financial crisis.

1. 9/11 sent the country into an economic tailspin.

2. Invading Iraq and continua-tion of the war has cost taxpayers billions of dollars; cost Americans and their families deep grief with loss of life and limb.

3. The price of crude oil was allowed to rise to an all time high

of over $140 a barrel.Here’s the simple part...I realize that many, many mort-

gages were handed out that were unearned. However, I would like to point out that, this month, I have saved over $80 in filling up my car. I drive a little Chevy Prizm, and get great gas mileage. That 80 bucks can be used to pay a CREDIT CARD BILL! Imagine if gas for the car finally went down to about $1 a gallon! Think of the bills people would be able to pay...maybe even a mortgage payment! Maybe there would be less need for taxpayer billions to bail them out!

Of course, due to the high cost of crude, the cost of everything related has been passed along to the taxpayer — groceries, goods, transportation, products, etc. That cost should come down, now that the cost of crude oil has dropped. But, do you think that will happen? I don’t think so, either. In fact, I recently bought a can of coffee and when I put it in the pantry, next to another can that’s almost empty I saw that the new can of coffee is smaller, has fewer ounces, yet is the same price. That’s no shock.

All of this reminds me of something that Dick Gregory said one time at an ACLU party held at 20th Century Fox Studio in the mid 70s. There was a sugar shortage. Everything that had sugar as an ingredient went up in price — cereal, jello, breads, cake mixes, beverages, etc. He said, “Just wait and see! A six-pack of Coca-Cola is going to cost as much as a six-pack of beer!” And, he was right.

The sugar shortage didn’t last very long, and the cost came down to normal. But, every-thing with sugar as an ingredient, stayed at the higher price.

All of us have to start to “follow the money”. We should protest companies who are still sticking us with the high cost of their product or service. Make them less greedy and more respon-sible. Hooray for the workers in Chicago who wouldn’t let their company just drop them out in the cold with no notice.

That kind of management is going to be a thing of the past! Famous rule of the 1960s... “Question Authority!” It applies today!

More Depth & Variety in Classroom & Online Programs

This January through June, the Southwest Vermont Career Development Center and the Learning Institute are adding new techni-cal education and training programs in graphic and web design, and supervisory leadership skills, and many more online certificate pro-grams for adults in the region. New campus-based offerings include Adobe InDesign, Introduction to Graphic Design, additional skill level courses in computer software, Technical Math, and Assertiveness train-ing.

Grants from VSAC in the past year provided 55 Vermont residents up to $3000 each for skill training at the center, and are available again this year. Bennington County employers in manufacturing, health care, information technology, telecommunications, and environmen-tal technology received grant funding of $25,000 for 185 employ-ees in CDC and Learning Institute programs in the last fiscal year through the Vermont Training Program of the State Office of Economic Development – funding that continues to be available to assist employ-ers to remain competitive through workforce skill upgrading.

Bennington Free Health Clinic to Open January 14

All in the community are invited to celebrate the grand opening and dedication of the Bennington Free Health Clinic on Wednesday, January 14, from 5 to 7 p.m.,.at the clinic’s offices at the First Baptist Church, 601 Main Street, in downtown Bennington, Vermont. Tours of the clinic and volunteer opportunities will be offered throughout the evening. Operations for the clinic will begin the following evening, Thursday, January 15.

The Bennington Free Health Clinic represents the realization of a longtime dream of Dr. Richard Dundas, an internist with 34 years of service treating Bennington area patients. Along with the Greater Bennington Area Interfaith Council, Dr. Dundas has created a free health clinic that will offer care and consultation for uninsured adults.

Guests invited to the January 14 celebration include Governor James Douglas, state legislators, local area officials, and the clergy and lay representatives of the Bennington Interfaith Council. At 6 PM, formal remarks will be offered by visiting dignitaries as well as by Dr. Richard Dundas, medical director, and Rabbi Joshua Boettiger, chair of the Greater Bennington Interfaith Community Services, Inc.

At least forty area medical professionals have come forth as willing to donate their time to the Bennington Free Health Clinic. A num-ber of lay people will also be volunteering their time to assist with

other operational needs. Ms. Sue Andrews, manager of the Interfaith Council’s community services, is the coordinator of the clinic’s adminis-trative work. The Bennington Free Clinic is affiliated with the Vermont Coalition of Clinics for the Uninsured (VCCU) and Volunteers in Medicine (VIM).

As part of their historic service to the community, the Greater Bennington Area Interfaith Council has accepted the challenge to partner with the Free Health Clinic. In late 2008, the Council voted to amend the bylaws of their 501(c)3 organization, long known as “The Food & Fuel Fund,” to continue the critical work of providing funds for area residents with housing, fuel, or food needs, while expanding the mission and governance of the non-profit to include new initia-tives such as the Free Health Clinic. The Greater Bennington Interfaith Community Services, Inc., will now serve as the 501(c)3 organization’s title, reflecting the Council’s shift from benevolence work to a wider, more grassroots, approach to addressing vital community needs.

William “Bill” Freeman, Sr.William “Bill” Freeman Sr.,

76, a resident of Oak Hill Road and a well known local building contractor died Friday, January 2, 2009 at his residence following a prolonged illness.

Born in Hoosick Falls, New York July 7, 1932, he was the son of the late William and Helen (Bateholts) Freeman. He received his education at the Hoosac School and later at the Carlisle Military Academy in South Carolina.

Bill married the former Phyllis Joly on September 9, 1950 in

Bennington. Mrs. Freeman died March 6, 2000.

In earlier years Bill was employed as a meat cutter. In 1965 he founded Freeman Builders which he continued to operate until his retirement when the business was turned over to his sons.

Bill was a member of Bennington Elks Lodge 567. He enjoyed playing golf, hunting, fishing, and was a collector of Savage rifles.
