Roses are now bursting outwith buds already show-ing and even some colour.
But I am absolutely amazed tohear of aphid problems alreadyon roses and would highly rec-ommend simply washing themoff with a gentle flow of water.
In terms of sprays, if you wish to stayorganic, use Safer’s ‘Trounce’ every ten daysas a foliar mist. To keep mildew and blackspot in check, pick off any infected foliageand every ten days, alternate an applicationof old fashioned garden sulphur with an ap-plication of a baking soda solution (8 gramsper one litre of water) mixed with a teaspoonof Trounce to act as a spreader-sticker so thespray adheres to the leaves. It works. Thereare also organic fungicides now available,like Safer’s ‘Defender’ (which is sulphur).
In spite of roses being slightly acid loving,they love well-rotted manures. Fibrous ma-nures, such as mushroom compost, are dandyand should be applied at least four to sixinches deep around your roses. If you coveredthe bud unions of your roses in winter withbark, sawdust or soil, remove it now and workit into the soil along with the manures. Rosesare heavy feeders. There are many organicand traditional rose foods on the market, butbe sure they are rated low nitrogen, highphosphorus and high potash with micronu-trients. Roses should be fertilized every twomonths.
There are some interesting new rosesout that are very disease resistant. Bailey’sNursery has introduced a series of roses,called ‘Easy Elegance’, that have great hardi-ness, attractive flower forms, compact size,recurrent blooming habits and yes, greatdisease resistance. My top pick of this seriesis ‘All the Rage’ because of its glossy foliageand ever changing flower colours. Coral budsexplode into 3-4 inch apricot semi-doubleopen flowers with yellow centres and finallymature to vibrant lipstick pink. Growing only2½-4 feet tall and hardy to zone 4, this shrubrose has a very clean appearance, a roundedform and great disease resistance. Classifiedas an everbloomer, it has colour all summerlong.
‘Super Hero’ is not overstating this ‘EasyElegance’ rose which evolved from ‘RoseHero’. It’s a good everblooming red with clus-ters of 2-3 inch hybrid tea shaped blooms thatjust keep coming all summer long. It growsanywhere from 3-5 feet tall and its red colourcontrasts nicely with its medium to dark
satiny foliage which is very disease resistant.Classified as a floribunda, its petal count is anamazing 35-40, which is pretty impressive.
‘Sweet Fragrance’ is a grandiflora with 3-4inch apricot flowers that just keep coming allsummer long. It only grows 2-4 feet tall withits full blooms held high on sturdy stems.It matures to an attractive salmon pink.Initially rated as a zone 5, it is now on trial inzone 4, but with mulching, it should be fine.
It’s hard to imagine that there’s one mem-ber of this series that outblooms the othersbut there is one that never quits becauseit has sterile flowers that produce no hips,therefore it doesn’t know how to quit bloom-ing. ‘Mystic Fairy’, with its continuous, mas-sive clusters of 3 inch red blooms with pinkundertones, is a variety that does great allsummer in containers on sunny decks. It’svery disease resistant with rich dark greenfoliage. It’s a keeper.
I’m also very intrigued with a new seriesof landscape and shrub roses from the fa-mous Kordes family, who have been growingroses in Germany for four generations. The‘Vigorosa’ series is a new breed of roses thatis very disease resistant and continuous flow-ering. It’s winning awards across Europe.
On the whole they are very compact, vigour-ous - as the name would imply – and providenew opportunities for easy care roses inthe landscape. ‘Ruby Vigorosa’ is a brilliantcrimson red semi-double that flowers in largeclusters; is slightly perfumed; has very glossy
dark green foliage; is compact in nature (grow-ing only 2x2 ft.); and blooms all summer. It hassparked a great deal of interest, winning teninternational medals, including six gold.
‘Apricot Vigorosa’ changes colour from arich apricot yellow to a beautiful apricot pinkwhen its medium sized double blooms open. It
too is low growing (about 2½ x 2½ ft.) and ofcourse blooms all summer long with a pleas-ant sour-fruity scent. Its rich green glossyfoliage is another attractive feature, which iswhy it’s won six international medals, includ-ing gold.
As the name would suggest, ‘InocenciaVigorosa’ is a pure white, softly perfumeddouble that blooms in clusters of 10-15 flowersand it has dense, very dark green glossy foli-age. It’s a littler shorter, growing only 1½ -2 ft.tall and wide. It’s often the first to bloom andis quite stunning in mass plantings.
‘Salmon Vigorosa’ gives us a rich, hot pinkcolour in the garden with medium sizeddouble flowers in sprays. It’s very compact,growing 20x20 inches. Its recurrent flowershave unique elongated buds with attractivehigh centres and it too has rich glossy foliage.This variety has won four international med-als, including gold.
‘Siena Vigorosa’ has dark red buds thatopen into brilliant semi-double orange-pinkblooms with a yellow base. Its flowers sporta light to medium perfume and its foliage ismore a glossy medium green. It’s compact,growing only 2 –2½ ft. wide and tall. ‘Siena’has won four gold medals in internationaltrials.
I’ve seen quite a shift in demand, movingaway from the traditional modern rose va-rieties to the more versatile shrub roses andto ground cover and easy care, disease free,hardy, continuous blooming varieties.
