Summertime in ourgardens, wheneverit comes, should
be the ultimate outdoorsensory retreat. The won-derful long evenings onthe deck or patio shouldbe the antidote to thestress we all feel duringour busy days. The bigquestion is can our decks, patios and gardens meetthe challenge?
Summer colour andhow we blend analogoustones together is veryimportant, but fragranceis perhaps the most im-portant when it comesto creating that sensoryrefill. Ironically, most ofthe colour with which wesurround ourselves haslittle perfume. It’s time toadd the fragrance!
As easy as it sounds, finding lasting perfumeis a more of a challengethan most of us think.Finding plants that willaccommodate sun orshade, be compatible withother plants and continueto perfume all summer ispossible, but we all needto think out of the ‘flowerbox’ just a little.
Heliotrope(Heliotropium arbo-rescens) is one of themost universal of allsummer bloomingplants. However, not allheliotropes are createdequal. Some of the newvarieties are far morecompact, but have littleperfume. The very bestis still the ‘nameless’ oldfashioned variety thathas that lingering scentof baby powder. It’s versa-
tile enough to be used inhanging baskets, contain-ers or in bed plantings. Itwill, as most heliotropevarieties, do well in shadeor sun. If you need it tobe more compact andwell behaved, simplypinch it back a few times. My second favouritevariety is ‘Sachet’. It isa very dark foliaged va-riety with fragrant deeplavender-purple blooms. Its rich dark foliage pro-vides wonderful contrastwith pink, white or silverflowers and with otherfoliage. It’s also a compactgrower and well suited tocontainers and plantings.‘Blue Marine’, anothercompact dark foliaged va-riety, produces fragrantdeep blue flowers about10 cm across and growsonly 25 cm (10 inches) talland wide. Like ‘Sachet’,it’s a rich deep contrastplant to other colours.
White heliotropeprovides slightly lessperfume, but its whiteflowers add a very differ-ent look to planters andground beds. The blueswill always be my favou-rite, but in the right situ-ation, the old fashionedwhite varieties can pro-vide quite a classy look.
When folks ask fora flowering shrub thatblooms all summerwith a nice perfume, one plant leaps to mind- the Butterfly Bush orbuddleia. Some speciescan be invasive but thegreat news is there arenow many new varietiesthat are sterile and do notpose this very importantenvironmental concern.A Proven Winner intro-duction, Buddleia x ‘BlueChip’ from the ‘Lo &Behold’ series is the firstminiature (24-30”, 61 to 76cm) sterile variety. Hardyto zone 5, it requireslittle pruning or dead-heading and blooms andre-blooms all summer
until frost. Its fragrantlavender-blue flowers willadd a nice perfume to ourgardens and patios allsummer and of course, attract both butterfliesand hummingbirds. Ilove the fact it grows wellin containers and is awonderful complement toso many trailing and up-right annuals, perennialsand vines. ‘Lo & Behold’was the top buddleia atthe RHS Wisley Gardensand won the gold medalat Plantarium in 2009.
An often overlookedfragrant plant is SpanishBroom (Spartium jun-ceum). This tender zone7 plant needs a protectedsunny dry spot, but willbloom with huge fragrantyellow pea-like flow-ers from early summerthrough autumn. It has awonderful perfume thatseems to carry through-out our patios and gar-dens. Spartium does verywell in containers or inthe ground at the edge ofpatios. It has virtually noleaves, but its rush-likestems make interestingfocal points. It’s a ‘musthave’ plant.
Another under usedplant for our patios islavender. You need a hotsunny spot with verygood drainage and atrained sense not to over-water!
The fragrance of laven-der is so nice to enjoy allyear round, even to brushup against or simply rubyour hands over the foli-age. When they flowerwith the blue, lavender, pink or white flowers, they put on quite a show.Today, there are a num-ber of lavender varietiesfrom which to choose. The hardiest, of course,is the ‘angustifolia’,particularly ‘Munstead’(zone 5) with its verycompact habit.
French Lavender, L.dentate candicans, has
become very popular be-cause of not only its fra-grant foliage but also itswide range of new flowercolours that persist wellinto the summer. Thesweetest smelling flow-ers are the English SpikeLavender,
L. latifolia. It’s hardy tozone 5 and has very fra-grant flowers all summer.
My favourite laven-der, however, is SpanishLavender, L. stoechas. Its huge soft lavender torich purple blooms areperfumed and so prolificthey just keep comingall summer long andeven into the fall with alittle pruning. Most aretender (zone 7), but thenew introduction, called‘Anouk’, will survivemost winters with ease. Its flowers are huge andtend to bounce around inthe wind like huge purplebumblebees.
Rosemary is anothersummer patio and gardenplant that is not usednearly enough in summerplanters and garden beds.
Like lavender, itneeds a very sunny, welldrained soil to keep look-ing great and growingwell.
Rosmarinus officinalis‘Tuscan Blue’ is a rigidupright with very aro-matic foliage and clearblue flowers that persistinto the summer. R.o.‘Huntington Carpet’ isone of the best trailingvarieties that looks greatspilling over walls, bas-kets and containers. Itdoesn’t flower long, butits habit is very attrac-tive. Rosemary is a zone 8plant. R.o. ‘Arp’ is reputedto be the hardiest (zone6), but I’ve had all thesevarieties summering out-side our patio for eightyears now in a protected, sunny, well drained loca-tion. It would be hard toinspire a summer gardenwithout it.
