Transcript of Tri-City News Real Estate June 24, 2011
By adding some very special late sum-mer blooming perennials, you canmake an enormous difference to the
whole look and feel of your garden. Whenmany other garden plants have finishedblooming, these perennials will look goodeven while tolerating the intense heat anddrought of late summer, as well as the coolevenings and occasional heavy rains of earlyfall.
At the very top of my list of favourites arethe rudbeckias. Perhaps one of the finest ofall the rudbeckias is the truly hardy varietyR. ‘Goldsturm’. Growing about two feet highwith deep golden petals surrounding a darkbrown button, ‘Goldsturm’ just keeps pour-ing out the colour well into October. ‘EarlyBird Gold’ is a newer version of ‘Goldsturm’that blooms two weeks earlier and still keepsgoing until late fall. Both these varieties willgive you many weeks of great colour.
Echinacea has been more recently sold as
a herb because of its healing properties, butit also has exquisite flowers. ‘Echinacea pur-purea’ is sold as the herbal variety, but pinkE. ‘Magnum’ and the white flowering ‘WhiteSwan’ are classy looking plants that add anunique quality to summer gardens. They lastwell, even tolerating some frost and the spentblossoms make interesting dried flowers.
In shady spots or in full sun, perhaps themost elegant of all the late summer peren-nials are the Japanese anemones. Dwarf ortall, white, pink or dusty rose, these plantsare a definite hit, blooming as early asAugust.
The yellow-centred anemone blossoms al-ways have a fresh look about them and theycombine well with so many other perennialsor shrubs. The white varieties especiallybrighten up shady areas.
For some early fall tones, add a bit offire to your flower beds with crocosmias. For years they were called montbretia andsold as tiny bulbs, but today they are usu-ally sold in ‘bud and bloom’ as perennials.Crocosmias need a somewhat sheltered spotand very well drained soil, but wow, do theyever add spice to our gardens with their fire-orange freesia-type blossoms.
Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ is an exceptionalscarlet red variety from Blooms in England, but don’t ignore a RHS introduction called‘Solfatare’ with its golden orange flowers.
‘Emily McKenzie’ is one of my favouritesbecause of its orange flowers with strikingbronze throats.
Lush looking fall sedums are especiallyimportant at this time of year. The succu-lent foliage of ‘Autumn Joy’ and ‘Brilliant’certainly looks great all summer and neverstresses out in drought situations. As therosy pink blossoms open, they providerefreshing new colour for weeks. They com-bine well with low-growing conifers or smallflowering shrubs like potentillas. As the pinkflowers turn bronze, they should be left onthe plant for a rather charming dried ‘falllook’.
Old fashioned Michaelmas daisies are stillgreat for fall colour, but dozens of new, more
compact varieties have been developed in thepast few years.
The colour range has also been dramati-cally broadened to include deep reds, vibrantpurples, pure whites and some interestingpastel shades. There are also a wide rangeof heights with many new compact varietiesfor smaller space gardens. Unfortunately, many varieties are susceptible to fungal leafspot disease, thus lessening their appeal. Thelatest varieties that look very promising fordisease resistance are the ‘Woods’ series inwhite, pink and blue.
Heleniums have not exactly set the worldon fire the past few years, but they producemagnificent fall colours very similar to rud-beckias. The small gold or gold-bronze petalsbloom well into autumn on either compactor tall varieties. They stand up well in theuncertain fall weather and provide a con-tinuous source of cut flowers as well.
Coreopsis have exploded recently withnew colours, sizes and forms, but the oldreliable C. ‘Zagreb’, C. ‘Moonlight’ and C.grandiflora are the workhorses and bloomconsistently now till frost.
These are some of my ‘tried and true’favourites that add fresh new life to late sum-mer gardens. Combine them with colourfulconifers, broad-leaved plants and evergreenperennials, like heucheras and euphorbiasfor some spectacular displays.
