Around this time of year,millions of Canadians areleafing through seed cata-

logues or browsing through seedracks in garden centres. They areimagining all sorts of wonderfulcolour schemes for their gardenand anticipating baskets of freshproduce — and all these good things are going tocome from seeds.

It all seems fairly easy but, in reality, I wouldguess that less than half of all the seeds boughtactually grow. This is not because the seeds aredefective, even though we like to blame the seed-smen for our bad luck; rather, it’s most often be-cause we need a little more information on howto have success with seeds.

Today, new hybrid pansy seeds cost about 3.7cents per seed and hybrid tomato seeds are oftenover $125.00 an ounce. If you’re interested insaving money, there is some value in knowing atleast a few of the basics about seed germination.

Firstly, most of us buy too much seed. Wekeep thinking that vegetable seeds are such agreat investment so we buy a few extra, just incase some don’t make it. That’s like buying ayear’s supply of detergent when it’s not on sale.As a guide, many seed companies are now listingthe number of seeds each packet contains andseed catalogues are very good at indicating howmany seeds there are per ounce or gram of seed.If you only need six tomato plants, why are youbuying 200 seeds?

The next problem area is what to do withseeds once we have them. Some folks leave themin the kitchen, some end up in the garage andyes, many get misplaced or lost. The best placefor virtually all your vegetable and flower seedsis in your freezer. Not only do you know where

they are but they are also being stored at a con-stant temperature and humidity. This stratifiesthem as well, which helps speed up germination.If the World Seed Bank freezes seeds, I think it’ssafe to do.

Timing is everything as the saying goes andthis is especially true with seeds. There has to bea natural progression from seed germination toplanting outside in the garden. Unless you havea perfectly controlled environment in which tokeep young seedlings, you must time your seedsto correspond with the readiness of your gardenoutside. In other words, don’t start outdoor toma-toes until early April.

I’m also convinced that you need a cool, well-lit area in which to place your young seedlingsduring the early stages of growth. AdjustablePower Smart lighting, adjustable heat and circu-lating fans are also important.

It takes a bit of trial and error to reallyachieve success with germination but the basicsare a good medium, clean starting trays, bottomheat, good light and humidity. Starter mixes areprobably the easiest way to go and if you usethese mixes in plastic cell packs or seed plugtrays, your success will be far better. Many seedcatalogues indicate the temperature at which thebest germination can be achieved and you canprovide that temperature by means of heatingtrays. Keep in mind, however, that they are notcheap.

Your greatest challenge will be to keep allyour seedlings short and compact before they gointo the garden. High light, moderate wateringand cooler temperatures will help you achievejust that.

There is a lot of satisfaction in growing yourown plants from seed but germination takes agood deal of care and attention. Seeds contain alittle magic and like a good magician, we mustlearn our craft well to help them perform up toour expectations.
