ARIES (March 21 to April 19) It isn’t always easy for the rambunctious Aries to give a second thought to their often spur-of-the-moment choices. But aspects favor recheck-ing a decision before de-claring it fi nal.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Information emerges for the business-driven Bovine who feels ready to restart a stalled project. Be prepared to make adjustments as need-ed at any time during the process.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Part of you wants to complete plans for an up-coming event, while your other self wants to see how things develop fi rst. Com-

promise by moving ahead with your plans while be-ing open to change.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) An unexpected change in a relationship could open up a problem or could lead to a much-need-ed and too-long-delayed reassessment of a number of matters. The choice is yours to make.

LEO (July 23 to Au-gust 22) Time for the Lion to total the plusses and minuses resulting from recent personal and/or professional decisions. See what worked, what didn’t and why, and base your next big move on the results.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The clever Virgo can make persua-sion work by presenting a case built on hard facts. Sentiment might touch the

heart, but it’s good, solid information that invariably wins the day.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You usually can win over the most stubborn skeptics on your own. But this time you can benefi t from support-ers who have been there, done that and are willing to speak up on your behalf.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You win admiration for your determination to do the right thing. Don’t be dis-tracted from that course, despite the offer of tempt-ing alternatives that might suddenly turn up.

SAGITTARIUS (No-vember 22 to December 21) While you still need to maintain control of a dominant situation, a new development emerges, making the task easier and

the outcome potentially more rewarding.

CAPRICORN (De-cember 22 to January 19) New factors might have a positive effect on a still-pending matter, but only if the information proves to be credible. Trusted colleagues might be able to offer needed advice.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) The week favors moderation, especially if a health prob-lem is involved. Resist the impulse to do more than might be good for you at this time. You can catch up later.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You could feel more than a mite upset by someone or some people who might be creating problems for you. Find out why they won’t change their ways. Their reasons might surprise you.

BORN THIS WEEK: You know how to inspire others to do their best by setting a persuasive ex-ample of your own.

ProvincialREGINA - Saskatch-

ewan’s privacy commis-sioner is expressing frustra-tion after having to wade through a massive recycling dumpster in Regina to re-cover medical fi les.

Gary Dickson and two assistants sorted through re-cycling more than 1 1/2 me-tres deep after getting a tip about the fi les Wednesday.

Dickson estimates they found more than 1,000 fi les that should have been shredded.

He’s trying to track down who was responsible for throwing out the data, which contained lab results, diagnostic images and other personal health information.

Dickson says there are fi nes of $50,000 for indi-viduals and $500,000 for organizations for breach-ing Saskatchewan’s Health Information Privacy Act.

He says part of the frustration is that no one has ever been prosecuted since the law came into force.

***REGINA - NDP Leader

Jack Layton is spending the day in Saskatchewan — the province where his party

Fifth baby of year delivered on Saskatchewan roadsidewas born, but where he was not able to win a single seat in the last election.

He is going to call on Stephen Harper to make sure that two senators facing election-law violations are not actively fundraising or campaigning for the Tories.

He’ll also focus on the Tories’ record on ethics and accountability.

Of the 14 federal seats in the province, the Tories hold 13 and the Liberals hold one.

***SASKATOON - Giv-

ing birth is a special time in most mothers’ lives, but one Saskatchewan mom has an especially memorable story after giving birth to a baby boy on Highway 16.

The 20-year-old wom-an went into labour on Monday afternoon on the road just west of Saskatoon.

Troy Davis with MD Ambulance says she was ac-tually pregnant with twins.

He says both babies were breech, and the EMTs were able to get them to Royal University Hospital to deliver the second baby.

Davies says the mother and both children are doing

fi ne.This is the fi fth time a

baby has been delivered on a Saskatchewan highway since January.

NationalKANDAHAR, Af-

ghanistan - The federal government has restricted media interviews of offi cials in Afghanistan, saying it is doing so to prevent them from making public com-ments that could infl uence the election campaign.

The restrictions be-came known after The Canadian Press requested an interview this week with Tim Martin, who serves as the federal representative for Canada in Kandahar.

The request was for a story about a transfer of command ceremony that took place today at Camp Nathan Smith in Kandahar city.

***TORONTO - Cana-

da’s largest publicly traded drug company is making a hostile US$5.7-billion

cash bid for Cephalon Inc. (Nasdaq:CEPH), a Pennsyl-vania-based biopharmaceu-tical company that has been in the hunt for acquisitions of its own..

Valeant Pharmaceuti-cals International of Mis-sissauga, Ont.,(TSX:VRX) is offering US$73 per share cash to Cephalon’s share-holders. The bid comes one day after Cephalon announced a friendly of-fer to buy ChemGenex of Australia.

The Canadian compa-ny, formerly called Biovail until last year, says it’s making the hostile bid after being rebuffed several times by Cephalon’s board and management.

***QUEBEC - The fi re-

brand mayor of Saguenay, Que., is looking ahead to his court fi ght to keep saying prayers before his council meetings.

“I’m happy, I’m very happy,” Jean Tremblay said in a telephone interview af-ter the Quebec Court of Ap-

peal agreed to hear his bid.The court will deter-

mine next Monday whether prayers in Saguenay can continue until the full hear-ing goes ahead.

“For me, a Tremblay from Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean, a French-Canadian Catholic, a Quebecer — for me, it’s the basis of our culture here.

“If we let go of every-thing that distinguishes us, where will French-Canadi-ans be in a few years?”

InternationalCOPENHAGEN - A

Danish company that un-wittingly has become a key supplier of an execu-tion drug in the U.S. says it’s not going to withdraw or restrict it, even though it objects to the chemical being “misused” for capital punishment.

Lundbeck A/S is doing “all we can” to dissuade U.S. states from using pen-tobarbital for lethal injec-tions, but won’t pull it from the U.S. market, CEO Ulf

Wiinberg told The Associ-ated Press on Wednesday.

Pentobarbital is a seda-tive with a range of medical uses, including treatment of epileptic seizures. It also is used to euthanize animals.

***NAYPYITAW, Myan-

mar - Myanmar’s junta has offi cially been dissolved af-ter a swearing-in ceremony to appoint the country’s so-called civilian government.

Myanmar’s transition to an elected government is widely viewed as a cosmetic makeover to continue the military’s grip on power. The country’s fi rst elec-tions in 20 years were held in November but widely criticized as a sham.

State media reported the new government headed by President Thein Sein was sworn in Wednesday in the remote capital of Naypyitaw.

Media declared that the junta’s longtime ruling party, the State Peace and Development Council was “offi cially dissolved.”

ExpressedExpressedOpinionsOpinions

For the last few weeks I’ve been driving around the city trying to fi nd one route into work and back home that isn’t going to destroy my car.

I could use a little help.Legitimately concerned for the safety of my little Pontiac, I’ve been

driving with more concern for my suspension and keeping my wheels properly aligned than I have been with avoiding pedestrians. Not that hit I’ve hit any pedestrians yet.

On the plus side, I’ve driven many roads enough to know instinctively where these potholes are and can now avoid most of them as long as nobody is coming in the opposite direction.

Even the streets that are not too bad have severely detrimental fl aws. Souris Avenue South has a deep trench stretching across the road. It’s not a pothole, but it will still give you a rude awakening if you’ve fallen asleep at the wheel.

I think it would be best if the speed limits within the city limits were reduced to maybe 30 km/h until new pavement arrives. Anything faster than that just isn’t safe when you have to steer sharply away from a loom-ing hole, lest you be swallowed up.

I’m also considering opening up my own repair shop because the money to be made in vehicle repairs in this city must be astronomical. Forget the booming oil industry here; start investing in local autobody shops. Those guys must be giggling all the way to the bank, at least when they aren’t dazed after striking the latest pothole on King Street.

It’s so bad I’m starting to wonder if there is a powerful auto-shop lobby group that has a lot of infl uence at city council, pressuring them to be lax on road repair.

I’m sure the City has a road replacement schedule, identifying the streets that need repaved most often and those that can wait. It just seems like that schedule has been neglected and instead of having streets redone, a crew of two maintenance workers drives around fi lling holes with asphalt.

It’s a Band-Aid solution for a street system bordering on critical con-

The pothole city

dition. The fact is, so many streets are in such poor condition, but tearing up and repaving takes time and shuts down lanes of traffi c.

There are always going to be potholes on some streets, somewhere in the city, but the streets right now aren’t just pocked by incidental potholes. They are peppered with some serious craters.

It’s going to be a long time before the roads are even 80 per cent drivable, but the cleanup has got to start soon.

The Mercury is currently running a contest to fi nd the worst street in town. For more information check out the promotions section of www.estevanmercury.ca, and to nominate a street, send photos or video to [email protected].

Tough to say about the federal election, but this road race is defi nitely going to end in a tight fi nish.

To the surprise of almost no one, and to the desire of even fewer, we are headed for a federal election May 2.

The minority Conservative government was only 29-months into its term, but as it brought down its 2011-12 budget March 22, it became rather clear it would not survive, although ultimately the budget was only the match that lit the fuse. The actual reason for the election call was a March 25 non-confi dence motion put forward by the Liberals that led to the eventual election call.

It is an election, which at least out West, generally seems to be unwanted. In fact, for most it seems like a process many will be doing their best to tune out.

There are several reasons for the disinterest, and all could be problematic long term in regards to how well democracy works out here.

On one hand there is growing apathy about voting, and we see that from the municipal to the federal levels. It seems more acute federally because at least in the West, it is hard to see what impact we actually have on the politics of the nation. We have long recognized the government is generally elected in the populace heavy, and thus the riding heavy provinces of Ontario and Quebec, and that isn’t getting much better. Even in an era where minority governments appear more the norm than not, the importance of western MPs seems less signifi cant.

There is also a general feeling our individual voices have less im-

portance on the federal level. Locally we can talk to every member of a municipal council, and be heard. Provincially, the capital is not seen as that far down the road.

But we are a long way from Ottawa and talking to our MP who holds one vote in a very large caucus seems to have little effect.

That, of course, goes back to a government, that while elected to rule for all Canadians, is also forced to make sure they do what will best see them re-elected, and that means keeping Ontario and Quebec happiest fi rst.

In recent years that has meant less federal attention seems to be tar-geted at agriculture, and the specifi c needs of Western farmers. That will not change, as the farm vote is so small today; so do not expect farm policy to be a major platform plank for any of the parties over the next month of campaigning.

You start adding the negatives Western voters envision in terms of federal politics, and many have turned off on the idea of voting.

Now bring into consideration the issues of the current call, and we could be heading to a small turnout.

It’s an election many see as ill-timed, and unlikely to alter the landscape of Parliament. No party, or its leader has exactly stepped forward through the 29-months of the just defeated government to bring the masses to their side in terms of winning a majority.

Unless some party drops the ball in a major way to turn support away, there is a feeling when we all go to bed May 2, we will still be governed by a minority government that

by nature, often at least appears less effective. It could be an election which will be much ado about nothing, and that could leave many of us watching TV reruns rather than voting, and that is a sad statement in terms of democracy.

Salvation Army slides Salvation Army slides into spring with into spring with fashion show April 9

It’s not often you get to talk about spring clothing fashions and the Salva-tion Army in one sentence, but you can now.

The Estevan Salvation Army is hosting a fashion show on April 9 right in their community church that will feature the fi ne line of clothing currently available in their own Thrift Store.

The runway activity gets underway at 2 p.m.

Tickets for the event that includes dessert and refreshments during the show, are currently on sale at the Army’s Estevan headquarters and Thrift Store at 1107 Fourth Street in Estevan, phone 634-2074.

“The early sales have been good,” said Major Len Millar, noting that tickets are being restricted to 80, since seating will be limited.

Doris Weinrauch, a well known name in the Estevan business commu-

nity, has agreed to serve as commenta-tor for the event with proceeds being directed to Third World relief programs.

Millar said he believed there are 15 or 16 models lined up to display the fashions and everyone involved in the

show is excited and eager to display the clothing lines.

He said it was a great op-portunity to show the public some of the great items that are available at the store, in a fun environment.

“I’m told there might even be a wedding dress in the mix, although I’m not sure about that,” he said.

The whole show will take a little over an hour and will be well worth the attendance, he said. The tickets are priced at a modest $8.

The models will be featuring three to fi ve outfi ts each and they will be showing them off on a runway that will be the centrepiece with table seating for the guests.

MLA Report – March 23, 2011 – “The Saskatchewan Advan-tage” 2011-2012 BudgetOn March 23, our government tabled a budget that is good for families, good for business and good for the future of our province.“The Saskatchewan Advantage” 2011-2012 budget is bal-anced, lowers taxes for families, homeowners, farmers and businesses, reduces the provincial debt and improves govern-ment services.Because of this budget, Saskatchewan families with depen-dent children will earn more tax-free income than anywhere else in Canada.Basic and spousal exemption amounts increase by $1,000 and the exemption amount for dependent children increases by $500 for each dependent child. These changes will save a family of four earning $50,000 this year almost $2500 in income taxes. It also means 114,000 people will no longer pay provincial income tax.We are cutting the small business tax rate by more than half, from 4.5 per cent to 2 per cent, and education property taxes on farmland, residential and commercial property are being reduced by a further $55.6 million. Since 2007, our govern-ment has reduced the amount you pay in education property tax by $103 million, the largest-ever property tax cut in Sas-katchewan history.Lower taxes make life more affordable, put more money back in the economy and create jobs.“The Saskatchewan Advantage” budget is also scally pru-dent. It is our government’s fourth consecutive balanced budget and reduces the provincial debt by $325 million, to $3.81 billion. The last time Saskatchewan’s debt was this low was in 1988. Debt reduction means lower interest costs and more money to pay for infrastructure and important gov-ernment services such as health care and education. Our government’s commitment to putting patients rst is also re ected in “The Saskatchewan Advantage” budget. We are increasing the total health budget by $260 million, to a to-tal of $4.46 billion, which includes more funding for physi-cian recruitment and training, an increase of $250 million for health regions and $5 million toward establishing a helicop-ter air medical service in Saskatchewan. Since 2007, our government has taken action which has resulted in lower sur-gical wait times, more than 800 new nurses and an increased number of training seats for physicians. Construction on the province’s rst-ever Children’s Hospital is now underway. We are funding the replacement of 13 long-term care centres in rural Saskatchewan including Radville.A growing economy puts more demand on roads and high-ways. In order to meet this demand, the 2011-2012 budget contains a further investment of $556.2 million into high-ways. That brings total transportation spending since 2007 to $2.2 billion, keeping and exceeding our promise to invest $1.8 billion during our rst term. In just four years, we have improved 6,170 kilometres of provincial highways, includ-ing 1,485 of repaving and 770 kilometres of rural highway upgrades. The 2011-2012 budget recognizes the important contribution farmers and ranchers make to the Saskatchewan economy. “The Saskatchewan Advantage” budget” contains record Crop Insurance coverage to protect against disasters such as last year’s record rainfall and unprecedented ooding. More than three quarters of this year’s Agriculture budget will go to fully fund the province’s 40 per cent share of business risk management programs that support farm families, in-cluding Crop Insurance, AgriStability and AgriInvest. For far too long, farm families have been forced to shoulder an unfair burden of education funding through property tax on agricultural land – they will directly bene t from the further reductions to education property tax contained in this year’s budget. Producers need to know they can head into the up-coming growing season knowing our government will stand behind them. This budget sends that message. With Saskatchewan’s economy expected to lead the nation this year, our government’s goal is to build on that momen-tum and ensure all Saskatchewan people share in the bene ts. Lower taxes.A better quality of life. Balanced budget and reduced debt. That’s the Saskatchewan Advantage. If you have any questions or comments regarding the bud-get or any other issue, please call either myself or Rosalie at 634-7311.

NationalWINNIPEG - Jeff

Stoughton isn’t the least bit fazed by the daunting prospect of shouldering the heavy expectations of Canadian curling fans on home soil.

The Winnipeg skip will represent Canada at the 2011 world men’s curl-ing championship, which begins this weekend in Regina.

After all, Stoughton won the world champion-ship in 1996 when it was held in Hamilton and was the runner-up three years later when it was staged in Saint John, N.B.

The 47-year-old earned a third opportunity to par-ticipate in a world event on home soil earlier this month when he defeated Ontario’s Glenn Howard 8-6 in the fi nal of the Canadian men’s event in London, Ont.

***VANCOUVER - U-F-

C will return to Vancouver on June 11.

Tom Wright, the U-F-C’s director of Canadian operations, says an offi cial announcement will be made next week.

The main event on the card, to be held at Rogers Arena, has Brazilian heavy-weight Junior Dos Santos facing former champion Brock Lesnar.

The fi rst U-F-C event held in Vancouver last year drew a crowd of sold-out crowd of 17,000.

***ANTALYA, Turkey

- Andre Hainault’s second-half goal lead Canada to a 1-0 exhibition men’s soc-cer win over Belarus on Tuesday.

Hainault scored the game’s lone goal in the 58th minute of a contest that saw the Canadians control a majority of the play.

UFC makes return to Vancouver in June

Goalkeeper Milan Bor-jan won his second cap for Canada after debuting in a 1-0 loss to Greece in February.

K e v i n M c K e n n a captained the Canadians, ranked No. 84 in the world compared to No. 37 for Belarus.

InternationalKANSAS CITY, Mo.

- After a fi ve-day tryout, NFL star Chad Ochocinco has been awarded a spot on the reserve team for Major League Soccer’s Sporting Kansas City.

A spokesman for Sport-ing Kansas City said the six-time Pro Bowl receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals was very happy when given the news Tuesday by coach Peter Vermes.

As a member of the reserve team, Ochocinco will not be given a contract or any monetary compensa-tion. He will join the team when it works out a couple of times a week.

***HARTFORD, Conn. -

Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is putting up some ice cream from the Univer-sity of Connecticut’s dairy barn against a country ham in a Final Four wager with Kentucky’s governor.

Connecticut (30-9) plays Kentucky (29-8) in Houston on Saturday for

a spot in the U.S. college basketball title game.

Malloy spokesman David Bednarz says the governor has not negotiated the amount of ice cream the state will give to Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear if the Huskies lose.

Connecticut has al-ready beaten Kentucky this season, 84-67 in November at the Maui Invitational Tournament.

***MINNEAPOLIS -

NFL players are defending their decision to disband the union, saying employers cannot force workers to unionize, and dissolution is “not akin to turning off a light switch.”

The players made the

statements Monday in a court document filed in response to the NFL’s as-sertion decertifi cation was “a sham.”

“It is established law that a union can renounce collective bargaining to en-able its workers to protect themselves from antitrust violations,” lawyers for the players wrote in the fi ling.

Lawyers for Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees and six other NFL players are asking a federal judge to halt a lockout imposed by own-ers, saying an injunction is needed to “stop the irrepa-rable harm being infl icted today.” A hearing on the issue is scheduled for April 6 in St. Paul, Minn.

• Have stubborn stains in the toilet? Put some teeth in your cleaning job by dropping in a denture-cleaning tablet and letting it sit overnight. In the morning, scrub and flush. It just might do the job.

• “Lighten blemish spots on your skin with lemon juice. Just dab on several times per day.” -- O.M. in Georgia

• “Collect small bits of soap into a cup or jar. When you have several, add a tablespoon or two of water to the cup to soften the soap pieces. When they are moderately soft, pour out the contents on a washcloth, fold it over and press into a bar shape with your hands. Peel away the cloth to reveal what

should be a reason-ably solid new bar of soap.” -- C.T. in Pennsylvania

• Save power with this tip: Use cold water to wash towels and jeans. Then hang them to

dry -- preferably outside, but on an inside line is OK, too. When they are mostly dry, pop them in the dryer on air dry to fluff them up. Towels and jeans take the longest to dry in the clothes dryer, and use a lot of electricity.

• Take soap scum right off your shower curtain -- spray with a vinegar-and-

water mixture, then throw it in the washer. Hang it right back up, and those mildew stains are gone!

• Another great sug-gestion from L.D.W. in Illinois: When canning or doing another job, “always do the thing you hate first, and then the rest will be easier.”

Squeaks and Creaks

Q: The wooden stair-case in my house has a couple of stairs that squeak loudly when anyone walks on them. They feel pretty solid. Is there a way to stop the noise? -- Jim in Toledo, Ohio

A: As your house and its components age and settle, it’s not unusual for a few squeaks and creaks to be heard in the fl oorboards or on the stairs, among other things. Of course, that doesn’t mean you have to put up with them.

Squeaks in stairs are caused by the tread (the part that your foot steps on) rub-bing against one of the risers (the vertical board between each step) or the stringer (the angled, notched board on which the stairs are built). Settling of the house, or ex-pansion and contraction of the wood due to temperature and humidity fl uctuations -- all of which are normal -- can

cause a tiny m i s a l i g n -ment of the stair’s treads and risers, n o t i c e -able when pressure is placed on t h e m i s -

aligned board (e.g., you step on it).

Correcting the squeak is not too diffi cult, especially if you can access the under-side of the stairs.

You’ll need a hammer and small fi nishing nails, wood glue and several thin wooden shims or wedges (available at home-improve-ment stores). You also might need a drill and wood fi ller.

Have a helper walk up and down the stairs while you pinpoint the problem areas from underneath. After marking the squeaky stairs, spread a little wood glue on the top of a shim or wedge. Gently hammer the wedge into the space where the stair tread and the sup-porting riser meet. Add more wedges, equally spaced, if necessary to even it out. Also, place a wedge between the riser and the stringer, and between the tread and the stringer. Have your helper test the tread from above. If the fi nishing nails are short enough that they won’t poke through the top of the tread or riser, carefully nail the

shims into place. What if you can’t ac-

cess the underside of the stairs? From the top side, locate the squeaky stairs and try to pinpoint exactly where the squeak is occurring. If the squeak is near the back of the tread, drill a pilot hole at an angle through the back of the stair tread toward the riser, then carefully hammer a fi nishing nail into the pilot hole all the way into the riser. Countersink the nail and fi ll the hole with wood fi ller that’s the same color as the tread. Move to the side of the tread and repeat, drilling a pilot hole toward the stringer beneath the tread and hammering a fi nishing nail through.

HOME TIP: Got a squeaky fl oorboard? For a temporary fi x, squeeze a bit of graphite powder between the joints underneath the fl oor to lubricate the space.

• It was American edu-cator Laurence J. Peter who made the following sage observation: “An econo-mist is an expert who will know tomorrow why the things he predicted yester-day didn’t happen today.” Incidentally, he also came up with what’s known as the Peter Principle: “In a hierarchy, every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence.”

• Ever wonder why it’s called the silver screen? In the early days of the cinema industry, the projection screens were embedded with real silver to enhance the refl ective nature of the surface.

• Greyhounds have bet-ter eyesight than any other

breed of dog.

• Worried about gro-cery prices going up? How’s this for a pricey egg: In 2007, a Faberge egg was sold at auction for nearly $16.5 million. Good thing the ones used in your omelets aren’t encrusted with jewels.

• Those who study such

things say that Americans drink more carbonated beverages every year than coffee, tea, sports drinks and juice combined.

• A legislator in the

Louisiana State House of Representatives once in-troduced a bill that would make it illegal to charge a bald man more than 25 cents for a haircut.

• The plant formally

known as titan arum pro-duces the largest cluster of fl owers in the world, sometimes reaching more than 10 feet in height. What’s perhaps even more notable, though, is its odor: The plant gives off a strong smell that is most often compared to that of a de-composing animal. Hence the plant’s more common name, the corpse fl ower.

Lamb -- An Ancient Symbol With Modern

Meaning

Lamb is the oldest do-mesticated meat species. In many countries, lamb is the major source of meat. Many Americans think of lamb as a springtime food, but it can be enjoyed year round. According to USDA’s Eco-nomic Research Service, each American eats almost a pound of lamb a year. Lamb is a symbol of spring, and also has been an important religious symbol for Jews and Christians.

The sacrifi ce of lambs

played a key role in the Jewish religious life and has important signifi cance in Christi-anity. The Jewish sac-rifi cial system, which was established in the Old Testament, set the stage for the coming of

Jesus Christ and his sacrifi ce by God as atonement for the sins of his people. Lamb is often served during the Easter holiday and during some Jewish Passover seder meals.

Lamb is meat from sheep less than 1 year old. Most are brought to market at about 6 to 8 months old. If the phrase “Spring Lamb” is on a meat label, it means the lamb was slaughtered between March and Octo-ber. Lamb is usually tender because it is from young animals.

When selecting lamb, look for good marbling (white fl ecks of fat within the meat muscle) and meat that is fi ne textured and fi rm. In color, the meat should be pink and the fat should be fi rm, white and not too thick. The USDA quality grades are reliable guides. Chops can come from various primal cuts. “Loin” chops and “rib” chops are the

most tender. Less expensive “blade” and “arm” chops (from the shoulder) and “sirloin” chops (from the leg) can be just as tender, but they are not as visually attractive because the meat is separated by bands of connective tissue.

This recipe for Mediter-ranean Spiced Lamb Chops is a fl avorful yet simple preparation for lamb chops and the perfect dish for your Easter holiday celebration.

MEDITERRANEAN SPICED LAMB CHOPS

6 to 8 lamb chops3 to 4 cardamom pods2 teaspoons cumin

seeds1 teaspoon turmeric1 teaspoon paprika3 tablespoons fresh

garlic, chopped2 tablespoons fresh

rosemary leaves, chopped2 tablespoons fresh

ginger, minced4 tablespoons olive oil2 tablespoons tomato

paste2 tablespoons butter1 teaspoon salt1 teaspoon freshly

ground black pepperJuice of one lemon or

lime

1/2 cup beef broth or water

1/2 tablespoon Worces-tershire sauce

1. Wash and drain lamb chops. Pat meat dry with paper towels, and set aside. To release the fl avors of the spices for the marinade, heat a dry skillet (no oil) over medium heat and add in the cardamon pods, cumin seeds, tumeric and paprika. Place spices in the hot pan, stirring frequently, about every 30 seconds for about 2 minutes, so they don’t burn. Remove spices from the heat.

2. Pour spices into small mixing bowl and add garlic, rosemary, ginger, 2 tablespoons olive oil

and the tomato paste. Mix well, and then smear the paste onto both sides of the lamb chops, covering them completely. When the chops are covered, place them into sealed plastic bags. Remove as much air as possible from the bags, and refrigerate for at least one full day. (You can marinate lamb chops for up to three days.) Remove the meat from the bags, scrape off the marinade, place it into a small bowl and set it aside to use in the sauce.

3. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, melt butter and add remaining 2 tablespoons of oil. Sprinkle both sides of chops with salt and pepper. Pan fry lamb chops in the hot oil mixture for 3 minutes per side, or

until chops are no more than rare in the center (up to medium rare), depending on your preference. Remove the chops from the pan, re-taining the skillet juices to add to the sauce. Place the chops on a serving plate, cover loosely with alumi-num foil and set aside.

4. Add marinade to pan juices in the skillet, along with the juice from one lemon or lime, the 1/2 cup of beef broth or water and the Worcestershire sauce. Stir to combine and bring mix-ture to a boil, stirring for 1 minute. Pour sauce over the chops. Serve immediately. Serves 4 to 6.

Choosing the ideal spa & hot tubEvery year, more peo-

ple are turning to spas and hot tubs as a way to relax, unwind and relieve their aches and pains. One of the reasons they are so popular is that they can be enjoyed year round – indoors or outdoors – allowing you to make the most of your leisure time regardless of the weather.

Spas and hot tubs are available in preformed acrylic or thermoplastic spa shell designs that are lowered into the deck for a permanent installation or as portable models in a spa skirt or cabinet that can be moved to a new location if your move.

Permanent concrete inground spas are also

popular either on their own or installed as part of a pool installation. The advantage of a concrete spa is its versatility. It can be cus-tom–designed into virtually any size or shape and can be fi nished in mosaic tile, block glass or colourful coatings.

For those who want a hot tub for an aquatic workout – nothing can beat a swim spa. These rectangular–shaped units

are equipped with pow-erful jets, propellers or paddle wheels that create a counter–current for swim–in–place exercising. Some swim spas also include bun-gee–cord and paddle–type devices for rowing exer-cises that improve muscle strength in the arms, as well as a warm water spa area where bathers can sit down and relax after a strenuous workout. A swim spa can be installed inground, fl ush

with the deck, or as a por-table, above–ground unit.

Soft–sided spas are another option. These light-weight, circular–shaped models are made of dense foam and are small enough to take with you for a week-end at the cottage – just empty them and roll them through the door and into a van or truck for the ultimate in portability.

For traditionalists, a wooden hot tub is the pre-

ferred choice. Made from cedar staves held together with metal hoops, circu-lar–shaped wooden hot tubs offer a deep soak and are the perfect complement to wooden decks and patio furniture.

For more information on what is available in hot tubs and spas, contact the Pool & Hot Tub Council of Canada at 1–800–879–7066 or visit their Web site at www.poolcouncil.ca.Renovate

without breaking the bank, or fl oor

Spring time is here, and with the inevitable spring cleaning comes the opportunity to start reno-vating. Often thought of as a time–consuming and expensive overhaul, reno-vation cannot only improve living conditions, but may also serve as a potential investment down the road.

Many homeowners opt to hire a contractor to ensure the project is done properly and to save time. For those who may enjoy a challenge or are working on a limited budget, home renovation requires a lot of homework to ensure that the proper procedures and materials are used.

Home improvement projects, such as adding a new bathroom, may add an increased value to a home. The key is to focus on the quality of the renovation as

a whole. One proven way to renovate without breaking the bank, or fl oor, is to use an above–fl oor macerating toilet system. The units can be installed anywhere in the home and makes for a cost–effective way to add a bathroom.

Macerating toilets, like those offered by Sani-flo, provide a solution to plumbing issues by eliminating the need for conventional below–fl oor drainage and can be in-stalled on any finished surface. Such fl exibility makes these systems an economical and viable alternative when gravity fl ow systems cannot be installed.

More information on these toilet systems is available online at www.sanifl o.ca or toll–free at 1–800–363–5874.

Instant decorating tips for every room in your house from Hunter Douglas

As the winter dark recedes to spring sunshine, Sally Morse, director of creative services for leading window covering manu-facturer Hunter Douglas, offers the following easy, affordable tips to give an instant uplift to every room in your house:

Living RoomsRefresh your living

room with slipcovers in light, washable fabrics. Bring standard slipcovers to a monogram shop where you can add your initials, a family crest or motto to give them a custom look. Lighten up that dark fi replace with the addition of some pale wood strung with lights and replace pictures with groupings of mirrors to add refl ected light.

Take down heavy drap-eries and bring the outdoors in with Hunter Douglas Silhouette windowshadings with the Signature S–Vane. Soft and sheer, this elegant window fashion beautifully fi lters the light with fabric vanes suspended between sheer facings. Your furnish-ings will also be protected because Silhouette shadings block up to 88 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays when the vanes are open and 99 percent when they’re closed.

BedroomsInvest in new bedding

to make the room seem as if it belongs in a luxurious boutique hotel. Add some pillows in a variety of sizes anchored by a bolster. Top

the bed with a lightweight blanket or pretty sheet and roll a comforter at the foot to have on hand for chilly evenings.

A new coat of paint is one of the quickest and most dramatic decorating uplifts. Bring home those tranquil colours from your last sea-side vacation, especially the soft blue/greens at the point where the sky meets the sea.

Consider Silhouette shadings in the light–dim-ming Bon Soir fabric for a good night’s sleep. The window fashion also ab-sorbs sound.

BathroomsTurn your master bath

into a spa with the addition of piles of white towels, scented candles and a fresh coat of paint. And don’t forget the “fi fth” wall…if you choose white for the walls try painting the ceiling sky blue.

KitchensDon’t be afraid of add-

ing colour to your kitchen. When I installed a black glass counter backsplash, it set off the other colours and enhanced the space by creating an optical illusion of infi nity. Something as simple as changing your

kitchen towels can even add colour and “spice” to a kitchen.

Dining RoomsTo dress up your din-

ing room, get your silver, mercury glass and china out from the cupboard and put it on display. Add an area rug and change the shades on

lamps and ceiling fi xtures. Sheer shades on your light-ing as well as at the window will create a soft, translucent light. Put all electric light-ing on dimmers so that you can be the movie director of your meals!

With these tips, your home will have an instant uplift for the spring and beyond.

Keeping an eye on the windowTips to help ensure yours are as safe as they should be

Did you know that when it comes to child safety in the home, windows and window treatments are one of the most overlooked areas? Take the quiz below developed by window fash-ions leader Hunter Douglas to test and improve your knowledge:

1. Window screens provide adequate protection against falls.

FALSE. Screens are de-signed to keep bugs out, not children in. Many a curious child has fallen through an open window. Use specially designed window guards on all second– and third–story windows and those on upper fl oors of apartment build-ings to prevent children falling out. Buy ones with “quick–release” features for easy emergency exits.

2. Avoid long draperies when decorating a child’s bedroom.

TRUE. When children

start to crawl, there’s a real danger that they will pull on the long drapes, bring-ing down the hardware and heavy, potentially suffocat-ing draperies.

3. There are window fashions that can help pre-vent a potential hazard from window covering cords.

TRUE. Yes, Hunter Douglas Silhouette window shadings, with the Signature S–Vane, have absolutely no tapes or cords running through the product. They offer the UltraGlide system with a single, retractable cord that maintains a con-stant length, whether the shading is raised or lowered, which signifi cantly reduces access to the lift cord. They also have the PowerRise 2.0 with Platinum Technology motorized wireless control system and hard–wired motorization for cordless lifting.

4. Place furniture close

to the window so children can benefi t from fresh air and sunlight.

FALSE. Toddlers are very agile and can climb from a crib or other furniture to the windowsill. And, in case the window is broken, there’s a danger of injury from fl ying glass.

5. Large glass doors and

windows can shatter from the weight of a child’s body.

TRUE. Use shatter-proof glass in the construc-tion of French doors and put stickers at a child’s eye level on sliding glass doors.

Keep cool and save money this summerThe start of spring and

warmer weather means that many families’ thoughts turn to upcoming summer plans. Vacations, summer camp and trips to the beach are fun yet costly summer activities. There are ways to save money now to prepare for expenses down the road, especially if you cut back on the amount of energy – and therefore money – your home consumes.

“Plan ahead for the summer heat”, says David Flood, insulation expert at Owens Corning. “Insulat-ing your attic in the spring will save you money during warmer seasons by prevent-ing warm air from getting trapped in the attic – caus-ing you to use more energy to keep your home cool this winter.”

How does insulating an attic keep your home

cool? The attic controls the temperature in your home. If properly insulated, the attic will block in warm air in the winter and cool air in the summer which will determine the cost of your energy bills. An under-insulated attic will cause your home to store unnecessary heat, using more air conditioning to combat the hot air.

To get started, measure

the amount of insulation you will need to reach the recommended standard of R-50. To do so, install up to 15 inches of PINK™ FIBERGLAS® insulation batts, made from natu-ral*** materials and over 70** per cent recycled content, to the attic. Place the insulation on the fl oor along joists, laying boards on top to walk on and cut holes around electrical

fi xtures or anything that produces heat. Next, make sure your attic is properly ventilated, to further reduce the attic temperature.

PINK™ insulation, made with EcoTouch™ PureFiber™ technology – the newest innovation

from Owens Corning, will ensure that your home is re-insulated with products that are sustainable. Prepare now so that you can enjoy summer to its full potential.

More information on insulation can be found at www.owenscorning.ca.

Macerating toilets save time, money and the planetLabelled as the new

generation of toilet systems, macerating toilet systems are a fast, cost–effective and eco–friendly option for bathroom additions or renovations.

FastMacerating toilet sys-

tems can be installed any-where in your home, from the basement to the attic, in as little as half a day. With the use of a ¾ inch piping system, the drain lines can be run without opening up walls and fl oors, minimizing renovation mess and instal-lation time.

Cost–effectiveAlthough the costing

is more than a conventional toilet, using macerating toilets saves the money that would otherwise be spent on a conventional plumb-ing installation. Macerating toilets are an above fl oor installation solution not only saving space, but saving time and stress.

Eco–friendlyIn comparison to the

conventional toilet system, certain macerating toilets use

approximately 38% less wa-ter per fl ush. When the toilets fl ush, the waste is reduced by a rotating blade and is then transported to the macerator pump box which then renders the waste into a slurry. This also contributes to helping the environment, as the waste is

able to be sent to the sewage line due to the fact that it is in a liquid form. In this form, it is easier and quicker for the normal bacteria to break down the waste.

Models like the tankless Sanicompact and wall–hung Sanistar by Sanifl o (www.

sanifl o.ca), feature European designs that look at home in modern spa–inspired bath-rooms.

More information on these toilet systems is avail-able online at www.sanifl o.ca or toll–free at 1–800–363–5874.

Start spring season with affordable home upgrades

While the start of warm-er spring weather may be a catalyst for homeowners to focus on improving gardens and backyards, spring is also a great time to make upgrades inside your home.

“The start of a new season is a great time for homeowners to start mak-ing home improvements,” says David Flood, insulation expert at Owens Corning. “Begin by topping up the in-sulation in your attic, which can help contain the cool air in your home and keep the hot air outside this summer.”

A smart home renova-tion like an attic re-insulation project will lead to increased energy effi ciency as well as lower cooling costs during the summer months. Insu-lating your attic this spring will save* you money on unnecessary energy costs by

enclosing your attic to keep the cool air inside. Increas-ing your attic insulation to meet the recommended standard of R-50 will help save up to 28* per cent on heating and cooling costs and reduce up to a half ton** of greenhouse gas emissions yearly.

To get started, install PINK™ FIBERGLAS® in-sulation on the fl oor of your attic. EcoTouch™ PINK™ FIBERGLAS® insulation products are made with PureFiber™ technology – the newest innovation from Owens Corning. Made with natural**** materials and comprised of 70*** per cent recycled content, insulating your attic with PINK™ your home will increase its energy effi ciency in a sustainable fashion.

Spring can mean a fresh

start for you and your fam-ily. After a cold winter with high energy costs, start your spring clean-up by insulating to ensure that your family is living in an energy effi cient home.

More information on home renovations can be found at www.owenscorn-ing.ca.

*Savings vary depend-ing on the original amount of insulation in your home, climate, house size, air leaks and personal energy use and living habits.

**Based on an average attic size of 1700 SF with existing R19 insulation, averaged over seven cities in Canada.

**Over 70%* recycled content, based on the aver-age recycled glass content in all Owens Corning fi berglass batts, rolls and unbonded loosefi ll insulation manu-factured in Canada.

Consider a bathroom in your summer home renovation

Summertime is typically anticipated with fun in the sun and cottage visits. For homeowners, summertime is seen as the perfect time to improve their living condi-tions. When considering what to renovate, the kitchen or the attic is often fi rst on the list, however, bathrooms are quickly rising to the top.

When considering add-ing an entire new bathroom to the home, macerating toilet systems are increasingly be-coming the best option. These systems are widely used in situations where a bathroom addition would be impossible or cost–prohibitive due to the positioning of existing plumbing lines.

“Macerating toilet sys-tems are a simple solution to what can be a complex problem,” says Daniel Cayer, national sales manager at

Sanifl o Canada. “They can be installed on top of any fi nished fl oor, letting hom-eowners cost–effectively add a new bathroom wherever it is most convenient: in a base-ment, attic or garage, under the stairs or inside a newly remodelled space.”

Because macerating systems do not require below fl oor drainage, they reduce the labour costs and time required to install a bathroom. With these benefi ts, macerat-ing toilets are becoming more commonly used in home renovations. The installation process is complete in just one day, giving homeowners more time to enjoy the sum-mer season.

More information on these toilet systems is avail-able online at www.sanifl o.ca or toll–free at 1–800–363–5874.

Doodle Glass Photo Frames

Ever notice that foggy windows and kids’ fi ngers are never very far apart? Suddenly you see hearts and names and the sun and mice. Well, that’s because it’s fun to draw on glass.

Now there is a way for school-age kids to make their art stick on glass. Glass frames, that is! Changes in weather won’t melt it away, your kids can use many dif-ferent colors, and in the end, they’ll have a very inventive frame for a favorite photo.

Hang the artistic frame on the wall and watch them catch a glimpse of themselves and their artsy doodles at the exact same time.

Here’s the stuff:--Inexpensive plain

glass frames with clips from discount stores

--Nontoxic permanent black marker

--Acrylic paints and paintbrushes, or nontoxic permanent paint pens

--Construction paper--PhotoHere’s the fun:1. Unclip the glass

frame and clean it. Figure out where you’d like to place the photo. Smack in the middle is fi ne. Sometimes off center looks great, or a slight tilt will give it a playful look.

2. Outline the photo’s position on the backside of the glass with the black per-manent marker. Use either a ruler as a guide or make a free-form squiggle line.

3. Remove the photo and consider the space that’s left. Outline designs on the backside of the glass with the marker, then fi ll them in with paint pens or acrylic

paints. Remember that the drawings will be in reverse when the glass frame is put back together, and any words will have to be writ-ten backward. The idea is to further illustrate the story the photo only begins to tell, about the event or your child’s interests at that time. For example, once my son framed a photo of himself triumphantly holding a big fi sh he’d just caught. He drew a lake, the sun and a fi sh jumping this way and that to show it had been a bright day and a big chal-lenge to make that catch!

Other ideas? If it’s a new baby, you might want to draw a bottle and bibs. If it’s spring-break memories, draw activities that repre-sent the trip.

4. While their artwork is drying, have the kids choose a piece of colored paper on which to mount their photo. Affi x the photo to the paper, place it against the glass, clip on the back of the frame, and you have a wonderful “picture story” to hang on the wall.

Quick tip: It’s not a great idea for preschoolers to handle glass. Instead, have them do all their doo-dling directly on the paper, including the squiggle line frame shape. Then frame it and hang it. They’ll be totally thrilled!

Apple Computer

Q: I recently heard on CNN that an old computer had been sold for a great deal of money. I have an Apple II, which was made between 1982 and 1988, in perfect condi-tion, with printer and several software discs. How much is it worth? -- P.G., Albuquerque, N.M.

A: I monitored eBay for about two weeks and think your computer is probably worth in the $200 to $350 range. Typical was an Apple II with several hundred discs, original documents in binder, joystick and “tons of extras.” There were 19 bids, the highest $215. I also found an Apple II with “extras” and in original box for $150.

***Q: Recently my mother died at the age of 96. She had

a lovely home, decorated beautifully with Early American decor. I am considering disposing of many of these items at a garage sale, but I do not want to sell something for 50 cents that is worth $50. How do I fi nd someone who can provide me with values that I can trust? -- Christie, Rio Rancho, N.M.

A: You should hire a certifi ed appraiser who has ex-pertise in determining the values of both household and estate items. Use the business pages of the phone book to fi nd appraisers in your region. Call several to fi nd one that you feel comfortable with. Don’t be hesitant to ask for references, and expect to pay a fee for his or her help. There are generally two types of appraisals, written and verbal. A written appraisal is often itemized and costs a little more than a verbal assessment. When I liquidated my mother’s estate several years ago, my sister and I avoided the stress of garage sales by making donations to local charities.

***Q: I have a large collection of records from the 1940s

to the mid-1970s. Do they have any value? -- Barry, Brooklyn, N.Y.

A: You need to invest in a good price guide. Three I especially like, all by Tim Neely, are the Goldmine Stan-dard Catalogue of American Records 1950-1975 (Krause, $34.99); Goldmine Record Album Price Guide (Krause, $24.99); and Goldmine Price Guide to 45 RPM Records (Krause, $24.99).

“No Regrets: The Life of Edith Piaf”

by Carolyn Burke(Knopf, $27.95)Reviewed by Larry

Cox

Edith Giovanna Gas-sion was born in Paris in 1915. She was abandoned by her mother, and when her father, an acrobat, joined the French army in 1916, he took his infant daughter to live with her grandmother, who operat-ed a brothel in Normandy. When Edith was blinded by meningitis when she was 3, the prostitutes in the brothel pooled their money so she could go on a pilgrimage honoring Sainte Therese de Lisieux. She eventually recovered her vision when she was 7.

After the war, Edith re-joined her father as a street entertainer, and together they toured France. Her father encouraged her to sing, and when Edith was 14 she began performing as a street singer. In 1935, at age 20, her life changed dramatically when she was discovered by Louis Lep-lee, an important nightclub owner who soon became her manager. Leplee pro-vided Edith with a new stage name, La Mome Piaf, which roughly translates to “The Little Sparrow.” The nickname would stay with her for the rest of her life.

I n t h i s f a s c i n a t i n g n e w b i o g -r a p h y, a u -t h o r C a r o -lyn Burkes recounts the often turbu-lent life of this incredible en-tertainer. Al-

though Piaf became both a cultural icon and perhaps France’s greatest popular singer, it was never an easy transition. Her fame seemed counterbalanced by self-doubt, love affairs that unraveled, addictions, fragile health and even a murder charge.

Although much has

been written about Piaf, “No Regrets” reveals fresh details and helps explain how Piaf’s courage, art and universal appeal helped establish her not only as a symbol of France, but more importantly, as a source of inspiration for entertainers throughout the world.

When Piaf died of liver cancer at age 47, she was denied a funeral mass by the Catholic Church. But that didn’t stop the fans who adored her. Her burial ceremony at Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris was attended by more than 100,000 mourners.

Triptans Offer Some Relief From Migraines

DEAR DR. DONO-HUE: Please write about migraine headaches. My granddaughter, age 22, suffers from them. She is a college student and also works. What causes these headaches? -- E.F.

ANSWER: Migraines start out as one-sided throb-bing headaches that can last 24 or more hours. As time passes, the entire head might hurt. Along with the pulsating pain, nausea often strikes, and sometimes peo-ple have to vomit. Migraine sufferers are sensitive to light and sound, so they seek a quiet, dark room where they can lie down.

The cause of these headaches is controversial. A popular theory is that a wave of slow electrical ac-tivity spreads over the brain

and infl ames its coverings, which produces the pain.

The above “cause” of migraines, I am sure, is not what you wanted. You want to know what brings them on. Triggers for migraine include too little or too much sleep, skipping meals, strong odors, bright lights and loud music. Women often fi nd that menstrual periods will usher in the headaches. Stress, both physical and emotional, can start them. Foods that often serve to initiate a migraine are chocolate, cheeses, fatty foods, sausage, salami, or-anges, tomatoes, onions, red wine, peanuts and hot dogs.

In the past 20 years, triptans have brought a marked change in the treat-ment of migraines. Sumat-riptan (Imitrex), zolmitrip-tan (Zomig), almotriptan (Axert), rizatriptan (Max-alt), frovatriptan (Frova) and naratriptan (Amerge) can control severe mi-graines and are available as pills, nasal sprays and self-administered injec-tions. For less-intense pain, aspirin, Tylenol, ibuprofen and naproxen are suffi cient.

When migraines recur with disrupting regularity, preventive medicines have a place in treatment. They in-clude propranolol (Inderal) and verapamil.

The booklet on head-aches deals with the com-mon varieties, including migraines. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 901W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with

the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

***DEAR DR. DONO-

HUE: My biggest health problem, if you can call it a health problem, is getting to sleep at night. I lie in bed for what seems an eternity before I fall asleep. A friend told me she had the same problem and cured it with melatonin. I’d like to try it if it’s safe. Is it? I am 76 years old and would like a few years of good sleep. -- T.R.

ANSWER: Melatonin is a hormone secreted by

the pineal gland, a small gland attached to the brain. It conditions the body to adapt to day-night cycles. Melatonin secretion is 10 times greater at night, with peak secretion occurring between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m.

Evidence suggests that this hormone shortens the time it takes to fall asleep and lengthens the time spent in uninterrupted sleep. Melatonin production wanes with age, and its lack could explain your sleep problems.

It also has been used for shift workers to get their brains and bodies

conditioned to new sleep-wake cycles, and travelers sometimes take it to prevent jet lag.

Melatonin isn’t sold as a drug, so it’s not closely supervised. Serious side ef-fects haven’t been reported. A safe starting dose is 0.2 mg to 0.3 mg.

***Dr. Donohue regrets

that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newslet-ters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.
