Deputy Reeve Lorne Jahn presided at the Rural Municipality of Estevan council meeting on Mon-day.

With the annual bylaw for exempting non-profi t groups from the coming tax year on the agenda, council passed a motion that led to tax exemptions for Metochos Ministries Bible Camp, Hitchcock Community Recreation Centre, and the Estevan Auto Racing Association.

Tax exemptions con-tinued, as council passed a bylaw granting three-year exemptions to new com-mercial buildings con-structed in the RM during 2010. As part of the RM’s development incentives for new commercial buildings in the municipality, they offer three tax-free years to all such buildings.

Counci l approved sponsorship of two dif-ferent programs dealing with the arts this year. In sponsoring the Souris Val-ley Theatre 2011 produc-tion, the RM will provide $3,000. Another $200 will be given to the Souris Val-ley Museum.

RM lends $3,000 to theatre program

Council learned the gravel stockpile is still in the process of being delivered. To this point half of the required 20,000 yards of gravel have been delivered.

Council approved a renovation to the RM offi ce which would add a new of-fi ce for the administration building. The renovation will free up an existing offi ce, which will now be used as a storage and meet-ing room.

RM councillors ap-proved a building permit for offi ces to be added to one of Turnbull Excavat-ing’s buildings.

A new oil well licence and haul agreement was given the vote of confi -dence by council at the meeting.

A pair of stars are coming to Estevan this weekend for a performance not often seen in the area.

The piano duo of Ales-sio Bax and Lucille Chung have performed all over the globe with such re-nowned institutions as the London Philharmonic and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. As part of the Stars for Saskatchewan series, sponsored by the Estevan Arts Council, Bax and Chung are making a stop here on Feb. 20, while they tour around the prov-ince this month.

Their performances of one piano and four hands have given them the ac-claim as one of Canada’s most dynamic and brilliant young duos of their genera-tion, according to Prairie Debut, the group supported by the Canada Council for the Arts dedicated to bring-ing high-calibre perform-ers to the Prairies.

“As well as being very polished performers,

One piano, four hands coming to Estevanthey are so personable,” Marguerite Gallaway said of the couple who met at a competition in 1997 and later married in 2004. Gal-laway is the chairwoman of the Stars for Saskatchewan committee, which has fi ve other members.

She saw the pair per-form for 20 minutes at the Organization of Sas-katchewan Arts Council’s showcase last year and was very impressed with the quality of the performance.

Gallaway said she looks to bring in acts to the area that are a little differ-ent than what people will usually see in Estevan. She wants something that isn’t covered by the theatre, so she isn’t overlapping that kind of entertainment and is always keeping things fresh.

“I look to fi nd some-thing new. I think rural Saskatchewan should see the kinds of things they get in Regina and Saskatoon.”

She noted that many

people in Regina take performances like this for granted and that she wants to “even it out a bit,” bringing top of the line performances to smaller centres like Estevan.

ing duets on the same grand piano, the issue of size is very much a consideration everywhere they go.

“She’s a mini thing and he’s quite tall, so there will be two adjustable benches,” to accommodate the disparate pair.

The performance is presented with the assis-tance of the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils.

Stars for Saskatch-ewan brings in people from all over. Gallaway said people from all over southeastern Saskatch-ewan will come to Estevan to see some of the shows that are put on, some even from south of the border in North Dakota. The added attractions bring in more tourism to the city.

way said the committee is already into the planning stages for next year’s at-tractions, continuing the process of lining up high-calibre acts for 2012.

The organization of the event can be a little daunting for the group. Gallaway said everyone has a job. Someone is responsible for the post-performance reception, introduction preparations and someone must be in charge of supplying the performers with any food or drinks they need before the performance.

Gallaway said all the little “blips” that come along must be handled as well. It all comes together in the end, eventually.

“It does take a lot of time to get it all together.”

Tickets to Bax and Chung are available at Henders Drugs or can be purchased at the door be-fore Sunday’s performance at 2:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Church.

A: The value of your magazines depends on who is on the cover. If it is Elvis Presley, maybe $35. If it is the Cordettes, maybe as little as $5. Typical values include a 1959 issue with Fabian on the cover, $15; Paul Anka from 1962, $2.75; and Bing Crosby, also from the 1960s, $10. Since collectors prefer items in their original condition, do not make any repairs, but store them carefully and out of bright sunlight.

I love hockey.I grew up playing the sport. I’ve watched it at pretty much every

level and I’ve coached it. It’s a sport that I get.One of the guys I coached with had coached the sport for more than

30 years. He would say there are four games going over the course of one game. What the players see, what the coaches see, what the refer-ees see and what the spectators see. The only point of view I am void of personal experience in is refereeing, but I have siblings and friends with whom I’ve spoken a lot on the subject.

When it comes to violence in Canada’s game, I have an opinion of compromise. After a slew of incidents in the last couple of weeks involving line brawls and goalie fi ghts, the state of hockey is very much in the limelight.

Mario Lemieux, a hockey icon and co-owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins, came down hard on the NHL’s lack of discipline in response to a series of brawls and misdeeds in a game between his own Penguins and the New York Islanders.

I’ve looked through comments that follow stories about the brawls and Lemieux’s criticism of the players’ and league’s actions. Many quickly jump to the support of the wild west style hockey the NHL is sometimes known for and criticize Lemieux for speaking out against fi ghting. But he didn’t say he had a problem with fi ghting in the NHL, and that’s not what any of this is about.

Those comments really miss what the criticism is. I have no prob-

lem with fi ghting in the NHL. Fighting and hockey have always had a neighbourly relationship.

However, watching line brawls and shift after shift of players going after other players is disgusting. I don’t want to get rid of all violence in the NHL, but at some point it gets ridiculous and a few games recently have reached that point.

There are the old time hockey guys who shout, mostly to be heard over their loud shirts, about how cracking down on headshots will eliminate the physical and entertaining value of the game. The same characters believe in no restrictions or enforcement to fi ghting.

A crackdown on headshots to protect the players is a good start. Fighting doesn’t need to be banned, it’s already penalized. The

league should however, consider what the course of action is when a second fi ght breaks out while one is in progress, as well as how it deals with line brawls. One fi ght at a time is OK by me, it’s even a crowd-pleaser.

Let’s not get carried away, though. When multiple fi ghts break out, or players continue to attack players later in a game, the sport looks like a joke. Restrictions on the number of fi ghts for players and teams should absolutely come into effect. I am not one to decide on what the per game fi ght quota should be, but there clearly needs to be one, with heavy fi nes and suspensions.

Any move the NHL makes to deter what happened in the Pens and Isles game would be a step in the right direction, but it needs to be meaningful. Lemieux’s criticism was that the action taken wasn’t meaningful, he wasn’t making a call for no fi ghting.

I love hockey, I know hockey, but the incidents in the last couple of weeks were an embarrassment.

Farmers have always been noted as needing to be something of Jacks-of-all-trades. I suppose that goes back to the earliest days of farming where operations were mixed, meaning you had to know about growing crops as well as animal husbandry, and to an era where you had to make and/or fi x, your own equipment either because there was no repair shop close by, or the costs were too high.

The farmer not only required the broad knowledge base, but also had to have the skills to use such knowledge.

Things have changed today in some key aspects of what a farmer needs to do and know.

The scale of operations has been trending ever larger for decades, and with the growth of farm size, the actual owner is in some ways becoming increasingly detached from the day-to-day operations of a farm, taking on more of CEO role, managing people, money and time.

We see this in two areas, the fi rst being the actual workings of a farm.

Grain farmers, for example, now look to hire many key jobs done on a custom basis. We see farmers paying others to apply fertil-izers and to spray crops, both as a way to reduce capital investment, and to hand over a key element of a crop’s yield potential to experts.

While not as widespread in Canada as in the United States, more farmers are looking to custom harvesters to combine their crops in the fall as well.

It makes sense if you recognize a farmer can’t drive all the equipment himself, but it’s increasingly diffi cult to fi nd staff who are willing to work a few weeks each fall and who have the knowledge and expertise to put behind the wheel of a quarter of a million dollar combine, with an instru-ment panel that could come from a spaceship.

The level of technology in modern farm equipment also means farm-ers don’t hammer out most repairs in their shop today, but again turn to experts to makes fi xes.

A farmer today is also challenged to keep pace with the knowledge side of a farm operation.

A decision as seemingly simple as choosing a canola variety to grow is made more diffi cult by the growing list of varieties, each with varying agronomic potential based on soil type, growing region, disease presence and numerous other factors which need to be understood to make the best choice.

The same can be said about which nutrient package to use. A soil test is the foundation of a plan, but the growing realization micronutrients can play is a vital role in production, coupled with global positioning technology which allows fertilizer rate variation almost on an acre-by-acre basis requires a much broader knowledge base than a farmer making a fertilizer decision in 1980.

So we see many farmers looking to hire agrologists who provide their specifi c expertise to designing a cropping plan.

At the other end of production, marketing was once a case of hauling grain to the nearest elevator and pulling the chute and picking up the cheque.

Today specialty crops need to be shopped to numerous markets. Crops can be sold months ahead of harvest to protect price. Marketing has become a huge part of the farm’s success, and again requires skills not needed a decade or so ago.

Farmers often look to hire marketing expertise to carry out that aspect of their business.

The end result is that farmers are becoming people managers as much as farm managers. They need to fi nd those with the required expertise and then build working relationships with those experts. It is becoming less about walking through a fi eld than it is about sitting through consultations at the desks of those hired to lend expertise to the farm.

It is a different role farmers are having to adapt to quickly to ensure operational viability in the face of rapidly evolving knowledge and technology.

who deal with kids in care in Saskatchewan are being told to talk to each other more after the death of a three-year-old boy at a foster home.

The Ministry of Social Services said Wednesday there’s a new protocol to ensure that child protection workers and foster home workers review quality of care concerns at foster homes together.

“People were not talk-ing before,” said Social Ser-vices Minister June Draude.

“They were not com-municating the fact that there was an issue between the home and the actual child. We (are) now saying, ‘Sit down on a regular basis and tell me what the issue is here.’”

The communications protocol was implemented in the Regina offi ce of the Ministry of Social Services after the little boy, who lived at a foster home in the nearby community of Pense, died of pneumonia in December 2009.

RCMP have laid murder charges in the case of a missing Saskatchewan man whose body they haven’t found yet.

Sgt. Paul Dawson said Saturday that forensic in-vestigators have a search warrant for a rural property in Davidson, northwest of Regina, and he says they are optimistic they will fi nd 25-year-old Rob Vicente’s body there.

“Our goal from the outset was to locate Rob to bring some sense of closure to his family, and we are optimistic that we will locate him so Rob’s family can have a proper burial for their loved one,” Dawson said.

Vicente was last seen

leaving his mother’s house near Davidson on Oct. 10 — his burned-out car was found two days later in an abandoned farm fi eld.

- RCMP in Saskatchewan say the ice is so bad on the Trans-Canada Highway, it’s starting to look like a ‘70s TV show out there.

There was a chain re-action accident on Friday morning when a van lost control and hit the ditch near Belle Plaine.

While a tow truck was working on pulling it out, another car came roaring up from down the road.

RCMP Sergeant Rob Cozine says it did what he calls, in his words, “a Dukes of Hazzard.”

He says it went up the tow truck’s ramp and fl ew into the air, landing on its roof in the middle of the highway.

Moments later, yet an-other car hit the ditch.

a news release that it would appeal, and called the judge’s decision “illegitimate and unenforceable.”

Viruses Sometimes Attack the Heart

DEAR DR. DONO-HUE: A friend in his late 40s thought he had the fl u and called his doctor for medicine. Later he had trouble breathing and went to the emergency room, where they said he was hav-ing a heart attack. Several hours later, he passed away. An autopsy showed that a virus had attacked his heart. I know there are many types of viruses, but what kind did he have? How does a person get this kind of virus? If it had been found in time, could something have been done to stop it? -- R.R.

A N S W E R : Yo u r friend had myocarditis, an infl ammation of the heart. Viruses are one cause of it. The virus most often involved is the Coxsackie virus, named after the New York town where it was fi rst identifi ed.

Myocarditis can be so mild that it produces no symptoms. Or it can be so overwhelming that it is fatal. It occurs at any age. Often, a respiratory infec-tion (even a common cold) or a gastrointestinal dis-order (stomach fl u) might precede it. A young person -- and your friend is consid-ered young -- struggling to breathe puts the doctor on alert to suspect that a failing heart is responsible and that a viral infection of the heart could be the cause.

Coxsackie viruses are transmitted from one per-son to the next through respiratory droplets or from foods, hands or utensils contaminated with the virus.

We have no medicine that kills this virus. Most of the time, none is needed, since nearly all Coxsackie infections are minor trou-bles. In cases like your friend’s, medicines to keep the heart beating forcefully usually can tide a person over the dangerous period of heart failure.

ANSWER: Foo t drop isn’t really a diag-nosis. It’s an observation of what’s happened to your foot. You cannot raise the front part of your foot off the ground when you take a step. The drooping foot makes it hard to walk. You have to lift the leg very high so the foot clears the ground. Finding out what made

the foot drop is going to be your diagnosis.

Nerve damage, back problems, stroke, diabetes and muscle illnesses are some of the causes of foot drop, and they are the actual diagnosis. Many times, the problem is nerve malfunc-tion. Quite often, health cannot be restored to the nerve, but things can be done. One of those things is a lightweight brace that keeps the foot from fl op-ping downward when you take a step.

Mahogany Chicken

Just rub the skin with salt and pepper, then brush with the luscious glaze during the last 30 minutes of cooking time.

1 (3 1/2-pound) chick-en

3/4 teaspoon salt1/2 teaspoon coarsely

ground black pepper2 tablespoons dark

brown sugar2 tablespoons bal-

samic vinegar2 tablespoons dry ver-

mouthFresh oregano and

rosemary, for garnish

1. Preheat oven to 375 F. Remove giblets and neck from chicken; refrigerate for use another day. Rinse chicken and drain well.

2 . Wi t h c h i c k e n breast-side up, lift wings up toward neck, then fold

them under back of chicken so they stay in place. With string, tie legs together.

3 . Place chicken, breast-side up, on rack in small roasting pan; rub with salt and pepper. Insert meat thermometer into thickest part of thigh, next to body, being careful that pointed end of thermom-eter does not touch bone.

4. Roast chicken 45 minutes. Meanwhile, pre-pare glaze: In small bowl, stir brown sugar, balsamic vinegar and vermouth until sugar dissolves.

5. After chicken has roasted 45 minutes, brush with some glaze. Turn oven control to 400 F and roast chicken 30 minutes longer, brushing with glaze twice more during roast-ing, until chicken turns a deep brown, thermometer reaches 180 F, and juices run clear when thickest part of thigh is pierced with

tip of knife. Place chicken on warm large platter; let stand 15 minutes for easier carving.

6. Meanwhile, add 1/4 cup water to roasting pan; over medium heat, heat to boiling, stirring to loosen brown bits. Remove pan from heat; skim and discard fat. Serve chicken with pan juices. Garnish with fresh herbs. Serves 4.

Math Activities Kids Can Count On

1 + 1 = 6. Can that be?When you put on your

thinking cap and get cre-ative, you’ll discover, for example, that 1 bicycle + 1 wagon = 6 wheels. It re-ally does add up. It’s just a matter of how you look at it and what you’re counting.

Developing divergent

thinking through wacky equations is the premise of the new children’s book “1 + 1 = 5 and Other Unlikely Ad-ditions,” written by David LaRochelle and whimsically illustrated by Bren-

da Sexton. Open the book, and you’ll be ready to put your imagination where your math is with the fi rst puzzling equation: 1 + 1 = 3? Turn the page to reveal that the answer is the sum of the horns of the unicorn and the goat.

Ponder and discover that 1 + 1 = 5 because 1 set of triplets + 1 set of twins = 5 babies. Or, be

surprised when 1 worm + 1 snake = 0 feet! Filled with 12 more sums that jive, it’s a page-turner that keeps young minds sharp and entertained. It won’t take long for your kids to discover that there are multiple answers to a question, and many ways to add 1 + 1.

Using math in daily living is good training and mental exercise for all ages. Try these fun

activities that are all about the numbers waiting to be counted wherever your family goes.

--Look at items in your house or yard, and come up with your own wacky equa-tion. Write it on one side of an index card or heavy sheet of paper and the solu-tion on the other side. Add drawings, stickers, photos or magazine cutouts to hint at the puzzle’s theme. Make several equations

over time, and put them to-gether in your own family book of unlikely additions. Enjoy sharing it and chal-lenging friends who come to your home.

--Learn how to count in another language. Prac-tice the words when count-ing steps on the stairway, apple slices on a plate or spots on your dog.

Spices originated in

ancient India, Indonesia and other parts of Asia as early as 2600 B.C., but it is only recently that their unique healing aspects have been fully realized. Bharat B. Aggarwal, who earned his doctorate in biochemistry from the University of California at Berkeley, builds a convinc-ing case that many spices are super-rich sources of unique phytonutrients -- plant compounds that fi ght oxidation and infl am-mations, the two processes underlying most chronic diseases. As Aggarwal points out, studies world-wide have linked spices to the prevention and treat-ment of more than 150 health problems, includ-ing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer and even Alzheimer’s.

The medicinal and culinary history and uses of 50 of these spices --- such as aniseed, cin-namon, garlic, sage and vanilla --- are featured in this new book, along with delicious recipes that use them. For example, cin-namon can help to balance blood sugar. With the type 2 diabetic outbreak becom-ing more and more critical in this country, this use of cinnamon is important. Luscious Lunches

Are you sick of sand-wiches, chips and baby carrots? The healthy and resourceful ideas below can spice up your lunchbox, require minimal preparation time and will help you look forward to your noon meal again.

Pasta NoodlesCook up a batch of

noodles the night before and store them in the re-frigerator, or use leftover pasta noodles, and you have the beginnings of a tasty cold salad for lunch. Fill one-half of a bowl-sized portable container with cold noodles. Add bite-sized cooked meats or fi sh, or throw in some beans or nuts. Chop a tomato, some mushrooms, peas, black olives, onions, spinach, celery, carrots, asparagus -- anything you fi nd appealing and have on hand. Grapes, raisins, strawberries and apples can be added, too. For more fl avor, add cheese, an herb blend, some light mayonnaise, olive oil and lemon juice, or your favorite dressing.

RiceRice is a healthful

and fi lling grain. Choose brown rice to add the health benefi ts of whole grain to your meal. Line a tortilla, lettuce or cabbage leaf, or a sheet of nori (seaweed) with cold, cooked rice. Then add your favorite fi lling, such as tuna, cheese, nuts, sliced

vegetables, citrus fruits or whatever your taste buds dictate! Add a sauce if you like such as salsa, light sour cream or soy sauce. Roll up your treat and slice it into 1- to 2-inch sections for a noontime treat -- either heated or cold.

DipsEveryone loves dip-

ping foods, so make your lunch a festive dipping occasion! Pack foods that are long and thin: sliced peppers, carrots or celery; asparagus, beans or pea pods; pretzels, bread sticks or cheese strips; or apple, orange or pear slices. Peanut butter, light cream cheese, yogurt, soy sauce, salsa, tomato sauce and salad dressings make great dips and can quickly be poured into a small con-tainer for lunch on the go. If you have more time, try craft-ing your own dips. Canned pumpkin can be blended with l i gh t c r eam cheese with a little maple syr-up for a sweet dip. Chickpeas, garlic, lemon juice and tahini (sesame paste) pureed together make a nice hummus base to which you can add spices for more fl a-vor. Minced garlic, chopped basil, Parmesan cheese and olive oil make a hearty

pesto; add ground nuts for more texture.

Don’t forget safety! If you’re packing your lunch to take with you, keep your foods at a safe, cold temperature. Put your water bottle in the freezer the night before, and pack the bottle close to the perishable foods in your lunch pack. That way you can enjoy ice-cold water with your lunch.

My recipe for Protein-Packed Pasta Salad is a great way to use leftover pasta and vegetables. It’s also an interesting way to incorpo-rate alternative sources of protein into your diet in the form of lentils. It’s delicious hot or cold and makes lunch a luscious affair!

PROTEIN-PACKED PASTA

SALAD

Lentils are often used as a meat substitute through-out North Africa and the Middle and Far East, and provide the protein in this nourishing salad. Lentils come in three main varieties and colors: French brown, Egyptian red and yellow lentils. Lentils are easy to

cook, but canned varieties also work well in this salad.

2 cups (about 6 ounces) spaghetti or small, whole-wheat shell macaroni

1 (15-ounce) can len-tils, drained

6 cherry tomatoes, cut in half

3/4 cup chopped broc-coli, green beans or as-paragus

1/4 cup chopped red or green bell pepper

1/2 purple onion, diced1 stalk celery, diced1/2 large carrot, sliced

into rounds1 teaspoon salt1 teaspoon freshly

ground black pepper1/8 teaspoon cayenne

pepper1 cup Light Italian

salad dressing3 cups Romaine let-

tuce, torn

1. Cook pasta accord-ing to the package direc-tions. Drain pasta and set aside.

2. Drain the lentils. In a large mixing bowl, combine lentils, pasta, to-matoes, broccoli (or green vegetable of choice), bell pepper, onion, celery, car-

rots, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper and cayenne pepper. Toss to mix.

3. Pour Italian salad dressing over pasta mixture. Toss to coat. Cover and chill for 2 hours to allow the fl a-vors to combine. Serve on a bed of Romaine lettuce. Makes 4 servings.

Steffy returned from Paris and surprisingly be-friended Hope in her time of need. Nick brokered a deal for Bill and Katie on a new house on the coast of Malibu. Hope confided in Oliver about Amber being pregnant with Liam’s baby. Liam demanded that Amber give him details of the night that he supposedly got her preg-nant. Roasted Vegetables

Cooked until they are tender and golden, these roasted vegetables can accompany almost any winter meal -- especially roasted meat and poultry.

1 1/2 pounds medium-size red potatoes

2 medium (about 1 3/4 pounds) fennel bulbs

2 medium (about 1 pound) red onions

2 medium (each about 1 pound) acorn squash

5 medium carrots4 medium parsnipsOlive or salad oil2 teaspoons chicken-

fl avor instant bouillon1 teaspoons coarsely

ground black pepper3/4 teaspoon salt3/4 teaspoon dried

thyme leavesFresh thyme sprigs,

for garnish

1. Cut potatoes into 2-inch chunks. Cut root ends and stalks from fen-nel bulbs; cut each bulb lengthwise through the root end into 4 wedges. Cut each onion into 4 wedges. Cut each squash lengthwise into quarters; discard seeds. Cut each quarter crosswise into 2 pieces. Cut carrots and parsnips crosswise in half. (If carrots and parsnips are thick, cut thick portion lengthwise in half.)

2. Preheat oven to

400 F. Evenly divide veg-etables between 2 large roasting pans, each about 17 by 11 1/2 inches (or between 1 large roasting pan and one 15 1/2 by 10 1/2 inch jelly-roll pan). Toss vegetables in each pan with 2 tablespoons olive or salad oil. In small bowl, mix bouillon, pepper, salt and thyme. Toss half the seasoning mixture with vegetables in each pan.

3. Arrange pans on 2 oven racks. Roast veg-etables 30 minutes, stirring once. Switch pans on oven racks; roast 20 to 30 min-utes longer, stirring once, until vegetables are tender and nicely browned.

4. Remove vegetables to warm large platter. Pour 2 tablespoons hot water into each pan, stirring to loosen brown bits. Pour liquid from each pan over vegetables. Garnish with thyme sprigs. Serves 8.

1 1/4 cups diagonally sliced celery

1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper

1/4 cup diced green onion

1 (16-ounce) can fat-free chicken broth

3 tablespoons all-pur-pose fl our

1 tablespoon reduced-sodium soy sauce

1 1/2 cups diced cooked chicken breast

1 (8-ounce) can sliced water chestnuts, drained

1 (8-ounce) can pine-apple chunks, packed in fruit juice, drained

3 cups hot cooked rice

1. In a large skillet sprayed with butter-fl avored cooking spray, saute celery, green pepper and onion just until tender. In a covered jar, combine chicken broth and fl our. Shake well to blend. Pour broth mixture into skillet with vegetables. Stir in soy sauce.

2. Continue cooking over medium heat, until mixture starts to thicken, stirring often. Add chicken, water chestnuts and pine-apple. Mix well to combine. Lower heat and simmer for 5 minutes or until mixture

is heated through, stirring often.

3. For each serving, spoon 1/2 cup hot rice on a plate and spoon about 1 cup chicken mixture over top. Serves 6.

Safety From Gas Leaks

DEAR HAMMER: I wanted to relate a story that your readers might find helpful. Last month, in the middle of the night, I woke up to the very strong smell of gas throughout my house. I immediately got everyone up and told them to get out of the house. All the burner controls on my kitchen stove appeared to be in the off position. I didn’t try to turn off the gas at the meter because it is located in my basement and the gas odor was so strong I was wor-ried about an explosion.

Instead, my family and I went to the neighbor’s house across the street, woke them up and called the fi re depart-ment from there. They got

there quickly and shut off the gas supply. The culprit was a faulty joint in a gas supply pipe just past the meter, which was quickly repaired the next day by a specialist who also checked out the entire system.

Please tell your readers to have an emergency plan ready in case they have to quickly evacuate the house, and make sure your kids, even the youngest ones, know it. I’m really proud of my wife and kids, who got up with hardly any questions and got out of the house with just their pajamas and slippers on during a cold night. But I’m still going over the incident in my head to think of ways to get out safely, or even better, to prevent this situation from happening again. Hopefully my experience can help oth-ers. -- James G., Amherst, Mass.

readers who haven’t thought much lately about home safety. An evacuation plan is a must, as is regularly checking carbon monoxide and smoke detectors to make sure they’re working properly, keeping fi re extinguishers within easy reach near areas of open fl ame (like the stove or fi replace) and educating your kids about safety in and around the home.

HOME TIP: Know the location of your home’s gas meter, the main water-shutoff valve and the electrical circuit box so they can be quickly ac-cessed by you or emergency personnel.
