Customizing your fitness plan Participants Gunter Vogtmann and Alan Hammond are both

working hard to get fit. But the process looks very different for eachof them.

According to Rich Smith and Kathy Kaplan, personal trainersand Courthouse Athletic Club and Anytime Fitness, there is nocookie-cutter answer to fitness. A customized program built by apersonal trainer with a specific goal in mind is often the mosteffective way to get fit.

Gunter, an 81 year old retired carpenter who lives in Auburn, isworking out with Rich at Courthouse Athletic. Gunter said his goalfor the program is “to rebuild my body to more flexibility, build upmuscle lost due to several injuries and of course old age, losingsome weight as a bonus.”

Rich and Gunter started off training very slowly, taking intoaccount Gunter’s age and physical condition. “Because Gunter is 81 years old, I’m not going to jump him right into a

heavy program,” Rich said. “We literally started with five minutes on the recumbent bike, and we’re working up thetime gradually.”

Gunter started out with short sessions of cardiovascular exercise for the first two weeks. Then he s tarted veryminimal resistance training without weights, gradually increasing the intensity. But for Gunter, the small steps yieldbig change.

“I saw a huge difference in him after just the first week,” Rich said. “I mean, he bounded out of the chair today,when he had a hard time just standing up last week. He has more energy. I can see it in his face, the confidence.”

Gunter lost five pounds in only his first week of working out, and his dedication is admirable. He c omes every dayto work out on his own in between sessions with Rich. His background as an athlete makes it easier f or him to getback into the routine of working out, as he was involved in swimming, gymnastics, wrestling and skii ng in his youth.But old injuries and an artificial knee make it necessary to be very cautious.

Gunter and Rich also focus on carefully warming up, cooling down, and stretching. “These are things I can do athome, too,” Gunter said.

For his diet, Rich has encouraged Gunter to make small changes rather than jumping into a drasticall y different

way of eating. “Watch portions, watch sugar and watch alcohol,” Rich said. “You can’t change your en tire lifestyle allat one time. My goal for Gunter is that at the end of 13 weeks, he meets his goal and can continue to go forward.”

One of Gunter’s competitors, Alan Hammond, is on a very different fitness plan. The 46 year old art consultantlives in Ophir with his wife on a small ranch and has a very active lifestyle, complete with heavy m aintenance on theirranch and lots of camping and fishing on weekends.

In spite of being active, Alan said that he has gained weight and become tiredover the past years. “I found myself getting tired and was feeling not so goodabout myself with the weight I had put on. Basically I want to get in shape andknew that a local trainer would be a great motivation,” Alan said. “My goal is tonot only lose weight but learn better eating habits.”

Being younger and more active than Gunter, Alan’s program is more rigorous.Personal trainer Kathy Kaplan of Anytime Fitness is putting Alan through astrenuous routine of strength training and cardio to increase his endurance.

Alan works out with free weight exercises and core workouts using a simple

plan that Kathy has outlined for him. He lifts as much weight as he can handle,doing exercises like lunges, squats, tricep curls, bicep curls and planks.

Alan does strength training work five days per week and cardio workouts sixdays per week. For cardio, he uses a treadmill or AMT machine in the gym andhikes outdoors. “Hiking is my favorite. It’s great to get out in the open air with mydogs and everything. I get a lot out of it,” Alan said.

Kathy said she tries to keep things basic and at a level of difficulty that will challenge but not e xhaust Alan.“The first week he was pretty wiped out by the end of the session,” Kathy said. “Now he’s learning t o pace

himself, which is great, and his stamina has improved.” Alan can definitely tell the difference, too, even after just a few weeks of working out. He shaved 15 minutes off

his time on a particular hike.Kathy has also given Alan guidelines on improving his nutrition. Alan took a direct approach to the change. “My

wife and I have re-vamped our entire household,” Alan said. “We purged everything out of our pantry, cleaned out thefridge, and started over. I’ve never really known how to eat right, so Kathy’s helping me.”

Nutrition is probably the biggest challenge for Alan, but he has the support of his wife, which is h elpful. Kathysaid, “He’s doing great. He’s keeping his humor up, and we’re seeing results.”

Alan’s more intense workouts and drastic lifestyle changes are working for him, and Gunter’s slow an d steadyprogress continues to yield amazing results.
