• Top layer is a layer of permanently frozen ground called permafrost.

• Top soil is so thing that it can support only shallow rooted grasses and other small plants

• Tree less land

Geologic Features

• Because of its latitude temperatures in the tundra never rise about freezing for long. The top layer of soil thaws during the summer.

Temperature

• Snowy Owls, Lemming, Caribou, Reindeer, Polar Bear, Artic Fox, Artic Hare, Musk Ox, and Rock Ptarmigan.

Animals

• Cladina Stellans, Lichen, short shrubs, sedges, grasses, flowers, brick tress, and willow tress.

Plants

• Human development destroys tundra's environment. Buildings and roads put heat and pressure on the permafrost, causing it to melt which kills some of the animals. People are working hard around the world to make sure that the tundra remains as pristine and beautiful as nature intended.

Impact on the Biome

• Tundra has a large underground reserve of oil.• Coal
