W ith the approaching summer months and the reality of reduced Sunday Mass attendance due to the

annual vacation period, a decision has been made, supported by the deliberations of the Parish and

Finance Councils, to finally cancel the 7:00pm Sunday evening Mass. This decision was first considered ten years

ago by the previous administration, then it was considered by Parish Council seven years ago when I first

arrived, later it was re-considered again three years ago when personnel and finances, relative to that Mass, were

low. Now, the data has once again made this topic a pressing matter relative to responsible stewardship.

With the exception of March and April each year, statistics annually point to a very low attendance during

the normal course of the year at the 7:00pm Mass. Seasonally, people don’t come in the summer. They are afraid

to come in the darkness of winter. Issues of reduced priest-personnel availability and low collection resources

that don’t even cover music personnel and supplies are of major concern. The constant difficulties in finding

volunteer coverage for the various ministries of lector, Eucharistic Minister, altar servers, and at times even

ushers, also make the liturgy very difficult to operate. Out of $301,000 collected on ABCD weekend, only $143

came from pledges at the 7:00pm Mass. Envelope usage, attendance, and collection statistics show that most of

the attendees are not even our registered parishioners. These details occasion a response.

Five years ago, Little Flower had four fulltime assigned priests. Last year when the number of assigned

priests dropped from three to two (when Father Tran and Father Barajas were replaced by one Father Flores),

presider scheduling became a struggle for stable priest coverage at that liturgy. A few weeks ago, a priest had to

fly in from Houston to celebrate that Mass, only to fly out again the next day for his professional

responsibilities. As summer approaches and each of our assigned priests takes their needed vacation period, the

available assigned priests will drop from two to one. Not even the professional schedules of our resident priests

permits consistent coverage. As such, good stewardship of limited resources requires reasonable careful

planning and, sometimes, decisions like this.

At the last Parish Council meeting, consensus was overwhelming that the cancellation of the 7pm Mass

should finally take place at this juncture in our parish history. When discussed with the parish’s professional

staff and when calendar matters were considered, it was decided that June 10th will be the last Sunday 7:00pm

Mass at Little Flower. The next day, at our very large parish, the available assigned priests will drop to one.

I know this will disappoint a small number of parishioners who have made the 7:00pm their liturgy of choice,

but I ask for your sacrificial understanding for the sake of the broader good. I have already spoken with regulars

at the 7:00pm Mass and we agree that this decision will only affect approximately 50 parishioners, who could

easily be accommodated at other regularly scheduled weekend liturgies, prominent among them is our beautiful

12:30pm Spanish Mass, commonly recognized as the largest and most vibrant Spanish liturgy in the area.

I want to thank those Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, lectors, altar servers and ushers that

have regularly sought to serve at the 7pm, sometimes alone, and frequently scrambling to respond to needs that

should not be borne by a precious few. The 5:30pm Mass will remain unchanged at this time.

Thank you for your understanding and for solidarity as a community.

From the Desk of Father Davis

₂₇₁₁ indian mound trail, coral gables, fl ₃₃₁₃₄ | www.cotlf.org | phone: ₍₃₀₅₎ ₄₄₆- ₉₉₅₀ | fax: ₍₃₀₅₎ ₄₄₆- ₇₆₂₄

inscritos. Estos detalles causan una reacción.

Hace cinco años, Santa Teresita tenía cuatro sacerdotes asignados a tiempo completo.
