what is the tMi ProjeCt?

How many times have we all been on either end of a conversation that began that way? For some reason, sharing TMI – “Too Much Information” – tends to be a guilty

pleasure for both divulger and divulgee. On both ends, there’s something incredibly cathartic and connective about revealing our deepest and darkest. We at the TMI Project are inclined to believe it’s actually good for us all, so no reason to feel guilty.

The personal is universal, and by sharing the parts of stories many of us typically leave out for public consumption – our writers/performers help to reveal common threads in all our lives. The secret parts are the ones we most long to share and hear. In telling and hearing them, we get connected. In our experience, storyteller and viewer alike leave the show with a new understanding of their experiences, and a new openness. We’ve heard on many occasions that audience members share juicy morsels in car rides home that they never would have discussed otherwise.

“ I hope thIs Isn’t tMI, but…”

The Secret Life

of a Secretary

Mission

We aim to get women and men from all walks of life crafting and telling the stories that have been burning in their souls while they’ve been afraid or ashamed to share them publicly. We foster the belief that knowing we all share similarly difficult secrets increases our compassion for one another; in our communities and in the world.

We also believe in presenting a diverse mix of stories, from all corners, so that we can bring about greater understanding of the people we often never get to hear from.

“My exPerienCe in tMi was better than any theraPy i have ever had–and there was no Co-Pay!” —2010 Participant, Kyra Greweling

Meet the tMi teaM

julie novak (improv coach/techniCal director) has been doing improvisational theatre since she could speak. Aside from performing in TMI, Ms. Novak is the official Emcee of the Broads Regional Arm Wrestling League in New York’s Hudson Valley (part of the national Collective of Lady Arm Wrestlers), where her improv skills have helped raise thousands of dollars for women’s causes. She was a core touring member of Arm of the Sea Theatre, an environmental activist puppet theatre troupe and has recorded an album with her band Guitars and Hearts. She is also the co-author (with Jacinta Bunnell) of the feminist coloring book Girls are Not Chicks.

eva tenuto (director) studied acting at American Academy of Dramatic

Arts and went on to found The Women’s Experimental Theater Group. Based out of New

York City, The W.E.T.G.irls wrote, directed and produced original material based on

real life experiences for over a decade. They performed at venues in NYC and numerous

East Coast Colleges. After receiving a MA in Elementary Education, Eva focused on

using self-created theater to increase the self-esteem of teenage girls in a pre-college

curriculum at Barnard College. The impact of the work with the W.E.T. G.irls and

the teenagers confirmed the power of taking life experiences and turning them into

powerful performances. Ms. Tenuto has raised thousands of dollars for various women’s

organizations directing The Vagina Monologues starring Academy Award winner, Melissa

Leo and with productions of TMI. Of all the projects she has worked on, TMI has been

the most powerful and rewarding. She is honored to be a part of the transformation of so

many people’s stories.

sari botton (writing

workshop leader) has worked

as a journalist, essayist, ghostwriter, and

teacher of various kinds of writing. Her

work has appeared in The New York Times,

New York Magazine, The Village Voice,

Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire, More, The

Rumpus, plus other publications and

anthologies. She has been an adjunct

professor in the journalism department

at SUNY Albany and taught first-person

writing in the continuing education

program at SUNY Ulster.
