    4THE TIMES OF LEAGUE

Those who had driven the youth did not do any thing for they released. The IUML was not responsible for any ones imprisonment. It did notcollect fund exploiting the Babaris Masjid Demolition. It is due to thepast service rended by the IUML that communal amity is still prevailingon this soil.

Who is responsible for education andemployment of Muslim Youth

In one period of the time the Muslims did not go for higher education. They were mostly school dropouts. There were no institutions thatadmitted the aspiring Muslim Students. But, how many people areaware that the IUML and its leadership were responsible for openingof educational institutions and for the employment of Muslim Youths inIndia and Abroad. Why not Magazine like SAMANILAI SAMUTHAYAMhighlighted this achievement. Those who point out accusing ngeragainst Prof. K.M. Khader Mohideen, I demand justice from them. Atpresent the community has beni ted much more than during the periodof Quid-E-Millath who is responsible for setting up of Justice SACHAR Commission? Who is responsible for the innumerable bene ts enjoyedby the Muslim community due to the implementation of SACHAR Committee recommendation. How many people are aware of the factthat it was due to the efforts of the IUML that SACHAR Commission andMISRA commision were setup. Did Muslim League publicize this? MuslimLeague has no fail on the vague street demonstration which producedno fruits.

    How Hindu Terrorism Emerged

I bring to the Knowledge of the people who criticized the IUMLLeadership has Lethorghic, lack of political Acumenship, One importantpoint, In the past in every parts of India the word Muslim terrorismwas echoed now these words are slowly fading. Is it a magic? Whenthe security authorities were in the habit of blaming the Muslims forall Bomb Blast in the country, IUML President E. Ahamed and GeneralSecretary Prof. K.M. Khader Mohideen met Prime Minister and SoniaGandhi on October 6th,2011 and requested them to enquire the bombblast event in a different angle to siphonout the truth the result of thisappeal was the arrest of Hindutva terrorist life women saint prajyabSing Takoor, Army of cer Srikanth Prasad Purohit, Swami DayanandPande, Ramesh Ubadyaya and Swami Ashimanand the terrorist acts of

Abhinav Bharat, Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrangdal came to the limelight. Muslim terrorism was dusted and sueroron terrorism doned. Whoabloaded this loudable achievement of IUML and how many magazinesbrought this news to the notice of the Muslim Community, the IUML didnot intel in the chief advertisement thamasa. When muslims are accusedfor Assam Bomb Blast on 15th Dec,2008 Prof. K.M. Khader MohideenThunded in the Parliament that who were the terriorist. When the ngerwas pointed against Madrasas for terrorism he enfetically stated in theParliament that he was the product of madrasas. Further he suggestedin the Parliament that the demolished Babari Mosque should be rebuildon the same sight and Advani should attend the inauguration of theMosque as he inaugurated the new build temple in the place of itsdemolisom in Pakistan. The speeches of Prof. K.M. Khader Mohideenin the Parliament testi ed is ghting quality. It was due to IUML M.P.Banatwala.G.Ms efforts. that prompted P.M. Rajiv Gandhi to enact theShareeat Protection Act. Prof. K.M. Khader Mohideen daringly declaredbefore the C.M and Dy.C.M Tamil Nadu in the IUML State Conference torelease the Muslim Accused from the jail on his personnal surety who

had this courage of conviction, how many people appreciated in forhis daring appeal. Did any newspaper complemented in for his QualityLeadership

    Is Election the only Objective?

In the long political path election is not the only objective of IUML.Those who blame the IUML for its close relationship D.M.K should sponeover the efforts made by the D.M.K. leadership in asking the other MuslimPoilitical parties to merge with the IUML

mosque. Under the D.M.K rule Muslims were included in the B.C. listand was provided 3.5 % reservations in education and employment. Isthere any other better alternative better than D.M.K, we will not lose

our identity, if we contest in other political party symbol Abdul RahmanM.P. is a good example for this. In 1991 election the IUML contested in18th constituency on the ladder symbol, we contested then in alliancewith PMK, I contested in Tiruchendur Constitency. Our community didnot provide and opportunity to prove our strength, IUML contested inseparate symbol in election 20 years back at present there are 85 Muslimsparties in Tamil Nadu. Those whose prist against contesting election rainafter seeking symbol to contest the election. Those who critisize IUML,understand one think clearly that IUML never split the community in itsone century history. It did not disturb the Mohall Jamaat Unity It didnot Intell in rowdism to settle the disputes. The aims and objectivesof IUML is the Unity of the community. Did it Leadership ever used thecommunity for their sel nterest? Instead of critisicing the IUML fromoutside it is better to join the IUML and guide it. Only if you join theparty you will understand the wounderful leadership quality of Prof. K.M.Khader mohideen and the fact that the IUML is being guided by theyouth. Hearty gratitude to SAMANILAI SAMUTHAYAM for providingopportunity to exchange our thoughts.

History of contesting inseparate Election Symbol

The question was rised our supportto the D.M.K, when Muslim youth werearrested and through behind the barsunder TADA and POTTA. The IUMLforced an alliance with AIADMK inorderto get them from released from the

jail, but what we gained out of thisalliance? Anti-conversion act and a bangiving azhan using loud speakers in the

Doctors at Nimhans saytheir studies reveal evidence of biological changes in the bodybrought about by yoga. Theyprescribe yoga therapy along withmedication in major ailments, while using yoga therapy alone forless serious disorders. Nimhans iscurrently doing rigorous clinicaltrials on the impact of yogain treatment. Doctors are also

measuring biological parametersin patients after yoga therapy. Thisproject has been taken up as thescienti c community has still notaccepted the role of yoga despitethe fact that nowadays evenmainstream doctors prescribing itwith allopathic treatment.

In all our investigations, thereis a high degree of evidencethat yoga in different forms doeshave a curative effect in diseaseslike depression, memory loss inelderly persons, schizophrenia andothers. We worked out speci cprotocols for yoga for speci cneurological problems. The degreeof improvement is comparable tothat of medicine, said Dr B N

    JULY - 2011

Four days after calling for critical examination of Sachar Report

as, in his view, some of its aspects could lead to ghettoisationof Muslims, and consequently instigating a war of wordsamong some eminent members of the community, Union

Minister for Minority Affairs Salman Khurshid, in an exclusive interviewwith TwoCircles.net, clari ed his views about the repot.

Mr. Khursheed has repeated, that there are aspects of the Sacharreport, which if implemented, will lead to Muslims ghettoization but hehas also clari ed that he has not questioned the credibility and the dataof the report.

Salman Khurshid Sachar Committee Report or aspects of Sachar Committee Report need

to be critically examined to ensure that it doesnt lead to ghettoization, said Khursheed.

By critically examining we meant obviously not the complete reportbecause we have already accepted almost ninety percent of therecommendations. There are few aspects of the report which lead towardsthe direction of ghettoization. Dont we have the right to question andcritically analyze those aspects, asks the anguished Minister. He pointsout an instance from that aspect of Sachar which will alienate thecommunity and not integrate it within the mainstream. For instance

Indian Wakf Service which is one of the recommendations of Sacharreport on Wakf. The Sachar report recommends a separate Wakf cadrein Indian Administrative Services recruited through the UPSC for theproper management of Wakf properties.

A section of the Muslim community has been criticizing SalmanKhursheed for ignoring Sachar recommendations on Wakf and therecommendations of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on Wakf.

We want equity with integration and not equity with separation. If you have a cadre of Muslim of cers under the government, what else isghettoization, asks Khursheed.

I believe all of cers should be available to Muslim institutions. If youwant Muslim of cers for Wakf, take them from all India service. You cantcreate a special service for Muslims, adds Khursheed.

You want Public Premises Act to apply to Wakf. If it applies to Wakf, why should not it be applied to other religious trusts? says the Ministeradding that We have the right to critically examine to ensure that weare not moving into the direction of ghettoization. Thats all.

Khursheed also points out that its not only Sachars critical examinationbut there should be critical analysis of every minority schemes shouldbe done so that they dont lead to ghettoization.

Although Khursheed also adds that this recommendation by Sachar

was rejected by the government, even before I came, it was found bythe government as not feasible. Not Questioning Sachar Khursheed also categorically denies questioning

the credibility of Sachar.Clarifying the context of his actual statement, he clari es, I am not

initiating the questioning of Sachar. Neither am I questioning the credibilityof Sachar. Any body saying that I am questioning the credibility

or the data of Sachar, is wrong. Praising the Sachar report Khursheed says that, There is no question

of change of stand on Sachar as far we are concerned. Sachar report isthe best thing which has ever happened in India. Its recommendationson education and reservation are outstanding. Its proposal of Equalopportunity Commission is my passion which I ham ghting for, addsKhursheed.

Since last few months there has started a war of words betweenSalman Khursheed and a section of leaders from the Muslim community, which, as Khursheed claims, has opened a campaign against him. Prominent of them, as Khursheed says, is led by Zafar Mahmood, whowas also the Of cer on Special Duty to the Sachar Committee. Soon

after Khursheed gave the statement asking for critical examination of Sachar, Zafar

Mahmood along with few other community leaders drafted a letterasking for his resignation for over-ruled the pivotal recommendationsof the JPC on Waqfs without giving any reasons thereof while presentingthe Waqf Bill in Parliament.

Khursheed on the other hand says that most of the recommendationswhich havent been incorporated in the Bill were not because they werefound not feasible today. He further asks, Why not JPC on Harshad

Mehta, is being implemented? Why not JPC on Air India is beingimplemented? This is ghettoization. What happens across the board doesnt concern

us. What concerns us is the JPC on Wakf and what concerns us is thatunless you accept the complete JPC on Wakf we will say you are anti-Muslims, says Khursheed.

Hitting out at the section of the community which criticizes him forbeing anti-Muslim Khursheed says, So what I am saying is that thereis an agenda for ghettoization which gets upset whenever I speak thatthere should

not be ghettoization. What is ghettoization? Its ghettoization of mind, says Khursheed

saying that Integration with equality is EOC and separation with non-discrimination is minorities commission.

Why hasnt a single voice raised in my support of the Equal OpportunityCommission (EOC) which I have been raising since it was recommendedby the Sachar? Why not these guys who have opened a campaign againstme, appreciate even a single thing which is being done by this ministry, asks Khursheed.

Hinting at the political agenda behind attacks on his from this group,Khursheed says, we just want to attack our Muslim Minister because

once he goes there is a space for us. Khursheed says that he is against nothing but ghettoization and the

agenda of ghettoization which a section of the Muslim leaders apparentlyhave.

There are people who dont want integration and if we don seek integration, equality will come under question mark, adds Khursheed.

Talking about one Mr. Lekhi who approached court against Sachar,Khursheed says that, People question what we are doing for Muslimsbecause of the articulation that Sachar is for Muslims.

What we are saying is that Sachar is for citizens of India who areMuslims, concludes the Minister.

Khurshid clarifes his controversial views on Sachar Report

    JULY - 2011

The Belgian parliament passed the law by a vote of 149-1 in April2010. But due to the fall of the government shortly thereafter and aninconclusive election that left the country with a caretaker government, its implementation was delayed until now.

The law does not explicitly mention niqabs or burqas. But it prohibitsthe covering of ones face in public for security reasons -- effectivelybanning the two Islamic garments. Violators will face

nes of 137.50 euros ($197.50) and up to seven daysin jail.

Support for the legislation crossed the ideologicalspectrum, with supporters calling it an effort to pro-mote gender equality.

I think we have to defend our fundamental princi-ples of the Enlightenment. Man and women are equalin all aspects, said Peter Dedecker, a lawmaker fromthe center-right New Flemish Alliance.

Dedecker added that the new legislation was also for safety reasons, as anyone could be hiding be-hind and concealing anything underneath veiledclothing. People just feel unsafe when they are in amass with people with burqas, he said.

Dedecker also stressed that he supports religiousfreedom, albeit within limits.

Of course people have the freedom of religion, he said We dont have anything against Islam, forexample, but I dont think that the burqa is a keyvalue of Islam.... It is just crazy that women shouldhide their faces, should hide their body becausesome men cant control themselves.

There Are Limits To Religious FreedomLeen Dierick, a member of parliament with the Christian DemocraticParty, agreed with Dedecker.

Everybody has the right to have a religion and has a right to believe, she said. But there are limits to it and covering the face is for us thelimit here in Belgium.

The only person voting against the law was Eva Brems, a legislatorfrom the Green Party.

A professor of human rights law, Brems said she was convinced thatthe legislation violates basic human rights and points to the fact that herstand is backed by both the Council of Europe and rights groups, includ-ing Amnesty International.

Brems said she also hoped that some of the Muslim women affected will challenge this law before the Constitutional Court and that it will beannulled that way.

She is also concerned by the way the law was rushed through thechamber without holding hearings with members of the Muslim com-munity or civil society.

    Belgian Face-Veil BanGoes Into Effect

It is estimated that only 28-200 women in the entire country actuallywear burqas or niqabs.

Brems also questioned the laws constitutionality and maintained thatit was badly drafted. It is a very problematic law also from a purely legalistic viewpoint,

she said. It does not only apply to Islamic face-covering veils, it appliesto appearing in the public in such as way that yourface is not recognizable with only very few excep-tions. So actually if this law is strictly applied we willend up in ridiculous situations where people organ-izing games for kids, dressing up like clowns will bepunished.

    A Tiny Minority Is Affected

Perhaps the most striking aspect of the law is thatit affects such a small minority.

Some 600,000 of Belgiums 11 million inhabitantsare Muslims, but the vast majority of these are fromNorth Africa, where the culture of women coveringtheir faces is rare.

Various estimates show that there only are be-tween 28 and 200 women in the entire country thatwear the soon-to-be prohibited garment.

Despite this, Mustafa Kastit, an imam at the larg-est mosque in Brussels, believes the law could havenegative consequences for the Muslim community inBelgium as a whole:

We regret the adoption of this law which risksstigmatizing the Muslim community even more, hesaid. It also risks strengthening the climate of fear,

the climate of Islamophobia that seems to be taking root in more andmore Western countries.

A Brussels native, Kastit maintains that tolerance has always been ahallmark of Belgian society and politics, and that the country was alsoa society of compromise.

Belgian politics and the mood in Belgium have always been distin-guished by a search for an absolute compromise, he said Everyonetries to [ensure their interests] but without risking the community spiritand the security of the citizens.

Brems agrees, despite the fact that one Belgian newspaper likenedher opposition to the law to defending the Nazis.

My theory behind this is that is not a matter of increased Islamopho-bia. It is about a tension in society with Islam [and] with multiculturalism

in general that tries to nd a way to manifest itself, she said. We are no longer accepting, luckily, manifest discrimination againstmoderate or regular Islam. People feel that they should be allowed to beintolerant vis-a-vis a more radical Islam.

Indian Union Muslim League has drawn up a scheme to build 151 houses to be donated for the less privileged sections as a memorial tothe partys late leader Panakkad Sayid Muhammadali Shihab Thangal.

Bene ciaries of the scheme would be chosen based on their social and economic conditions, irrespective of caste or religion, IUMLdistrict president Panakkad Syid Sadiqali Shihab Thangal said here today.

The late Thangals life was one dedicated to uplift the poor and needy. So we have worked out this scheme as the most be tting tributeto his memory, IUML leaders said.

The houses would be built in 100 village panchyats and seven municipal towns in the district. Each unit is estimated to cost Rs three lakh. Funds for building them would be mobilised by the village and municipal party committees

seeking support from people of different walks of life and NRI organisations. The scheme would be inaugurated simultaneously in 15 centres on August 5. The project is expected to be completed within 10 months,

    party leaders said.

IUML to build 151 houses for poor!

    JULY - 2011

The loss of Spain for the Muslimswas more than mere change of real estate overlordship. Spainand Portugal was, for more than

ve centuries, a treasure-houseof knowledge and technology, much superior to other parts of Europe. The conquest enabledthe new masters acquire readymade this treasure, and eventuallytriggered a spirit of renaissanceand mercantilism in the Westernworld that culminated in the questfor more and more fortunes fromdistant lands. Vasco da Gamaused the advanced navigationalknowledge bequeathed by theMoors to round the Cape of GoodHope, bypassing dar us Islam fora direct trade route to the richtreasure house of Indian spices.

Chaos would be anunderstatement to describe thepolitical situation of India at thistime. The pan-Indian kingdom of

Allaudin Khilji had broken up intoseveral small principalities. Thesultan of Gujarat was the dominantpower in the Western Coast. The Adil Shahi sultan of Bijapurcontrolled the Konkan coast andthe small principalities of Cochinand Zamorin together with theirvassals held sway deep-south.

Vasco da Gama reached Calicutin 903 AH (1498 CE). The Zamorinraja there, eager to attract tradewelcomed him. It, however took only two years for the Zamorinto understand that the damagecaused by the per dy andinsolence of the Portuguese wouldfar outweigh any prosperity tradewould bring, and as such promptlyexpelled them.

The Portuguese immediatelyset up shop at next door Cochin, whose raja was a rival of Zamorin. What followed was the standardpattern that colonialists wouldthereafter adopt escalate rivalrybetween native rajas, pit oneagainst the other, offer assistanceto one raja at a time and nally, when the assistance reach a levelof obligation that would take somedoing to recompense, establishhegemony over both.

Having settled down at FortCochin, the Portuguese started off by harassing the Muslims of Cochin. If religious hatred that followed theconquest of Spain and Portuguese

Kunjali Marakkar Nayab Naseerfrom the Moors were not enough, the Muslims were the prominenttraders of Cochin and Calicut, theposition the Portuguese eyed.

Mohammed Kunjali was both aMuslim and a prominent trader of Cochin. It was thus only a matter of time before the Portuguese camefor him. On seeing the unpleasantface of the enemy, he rememberedthe proverb There are a thousandlands but only one soul and assuch hastened to Calicut.

The Zamorin, in the meantime, anticipating trouble from thePortuguese built a fort in Ponnani. He was now head-hunting for acapable head of operations, whichapart from being a distinguishedboatman also needed to showsuf cient zeal and motivation not tobe lured by the Portuguese promiseof gold, wine and women.

It now transpired thatMohammed Kunjali, the trader, was also a distinguished boatman. It was thus only a matter of timebefore he made common causewith the Zamorin and establishedhimself as master of fort Ponnani. It was still sooner that he rosein esteem to become leader of Zamorins naval force, andorganized the rst naval defense of the Indian coast against imperialforces.

The attered Zamorin gaveKunjali the title derived fromthe Malayalam word marakkalammeaning and kar, a termination, showing possession, andhenceforth Mohammed Kunjalicame to be known as the rstKunjali Marakkar.

Very soon, the Portuguesesucceeded in taking Goa fromthe Adil Shah sultan of Bijapur, marking this occassion by awholesale massacre of theMuslims there. The Zamorin madecommon cause with the KothariRaja of Kannur, the Sultan of Gujarat and the Sultan of Egypt

all threatened by thegrowing hegemony of Portuguesein the Arabian Sea. Their combinednavy crushed the Portuguese atChaul in 913 AH (1508 CE). The

Portuguese however settled scoresthe next year at Diu, resulting inthe withdrawal of Egyptian navyfrom Indian waters.

    Calicut was a maritime state

and depended on the seas for itssurvival. In 918 AH (1513 CE),unable to withstand Portuguesedominance of the seas, the Zamorinsued for peace. The Portuguesesecured trade monopolies andconstructed forts at Calicut andChailyam.

Kunjali Markkar suddenly foundhimself on his own. He wasnow the only resistance againstthe Portuguese in India. Henevertheless remained on goodterms with the Zamorin, whopersuaded the Portuguese fromattacking Ponnani in 931 AH (1525CE). However, in 956 AH (1550CE) the Portuguese did attack, pillage and plunder Ponnani. A fortwas built at nearby Chaliyam, onthe site of a masjid demolished bythem.

Mohammed Kunjali passed awayand his successor, also donning themantle of Kunjali Marakkar cameto be known as Kunjali II.

The Zamorins alliancewith Portuguese was an allianceof desperation, and he was on thelookout to get rid of them at theearliest opportunity. The defeat of

Vijayanagar, a staunch ally of thePortuguese in 972 AH (1565 CE)by the ve Deccan sultanates gaveZamorin the impetus.

Hostilities were resumed. Thewar-paroe was a small craft devisedby the Kunjalis, which, manned by

just thirty to forty men each couldbe rowed through lagoons andnarrow waters. Several such craftswere deployed at small creeksand inconspicuous estuaries. Theywould suddenly come out andattack the Portuguese ships atwill, in icting heavy damage andcausalities before returning tothe safety of shallow waters. Thiswent on for many years until in1571 CE Kunjali Marakkar attaineda famous victory when he crushedthe Portuguese at Chaliyam anddemolished the Portuguese fortthere.

In 1573 CE, Kunjali Marakkarpassed away and his son donnedthe mantle of Kunjali III.

    Though the Portuguese were

driven out of Calicut and Chaliyam, they still controlled the Indian seas. The loss of Vijayanagar did nothingto change the power balance asthe Zamorin had hoped, and he

still needed free navigation to theports of Gujarat, Persia and Arabiaif he were to survive long. So hewent to the Portuguese again, andthis time he gave them permissionto build a factory at Ponnani.

Kunjali Marakkar was notamused. He shifted his base toKottakal and started hostilitieswith both the Zamorin and thePortuguese.

The expedition came soonerthan expected, but Kunjali waswaiting. The Zamroinselephants fell into the booby trapson the forests enroute to Kotakkal. The Portuguese war ships nevergot chance to wage battle. Nosooner had they arrived from Goathan they were mercilessly shotdown by Kunjalis ef cientcanoes and slingshots.

For the next two years, KunjaliMarakkar ran a virtually independentkingdom, continuing his policy of harassing the Portuguese on theseas and their friends on land.

In 1008 AH (1600 CE), thestage was set for the end-game.The Zamorin attacked from landwith an army of six thousand andthe Portuguese bombarded fromthe sea. Left with no choice, theKunjali surrendered to Zamorin ona solemn promise of pardon.

The next thing Kunjali knewwas being dragged by chains, hisbody bleeding porously from thebeatings. Screams and wails of women and children could be heardin the background, but Kunjali andhis band of trusted followers wereoblivious it was not as if they could do something about it.Some were already dead and theothers were half dead. In Goa, thePortuguese rst nurtured Kunjalito full strength. Then the screamscould be heard all over Goa as hewas dismembered piece by piece, starting from leg upward. Laterthe body pieces of Kunjali and hisfollowers were mixed and hungaround in different places, alesson for those who dare defy theimperial order.

    JULY - 2011

Anders Behring Breivik, the man accused of the murder of at least92 Norwegians in a bomb and gun massacre, boasted online about hisdiscussions with the far-right English Defence League and other anti-Islamic European organisations.

The Norwegian prime minister, Jens Stoltenberg, said Norwegianof cials were working with foreign intelligence agencies to see if therewas any international involvement in the slaughter. We have runningcontact with other countries intelligence services, he said.

Breivik was arrested on Utya island where he shot and killed at least85 people, mostly teenagers, at a youth summer camp for supportersof Norways Labour party after bombing Oslos government district justhours before. Dressed as a police of cer, he ordered the teenagers togather round him before opening re. Survivors described how dozensof people were mown down. The massacre led to the largest death tollever recorded by a single gunman on the rampage.

Ida Knudsen, 16, said she had been in a group of 100 who had initiallyrun from the killer, but that was reduced to about 60 as the gunmanpursued them. Eventually she was one of 12 who climbed into a boatand escaped.

Another survivor, 15-year-old Mattori Anson, described how he edinto a cabin with 40 other teenagers. They blocked the door and thekiller tried to get inside. Then he began shooting at the door. Eventuallyhe gave up and the occupants all survived.

With the entire island a crime scene, of cers were still combing theshoreline on Saturday and boats were searching the water for morebodies amid fears the toll could rise further. Police were continuing toinvestigate whether there had been a second gunman on the island.

The disclosure of Breiviks claimed links with far-right organisationscame as details continued to emerge about the rightwing Christianfundamentalist and Freemason behind Norways worst postwar act of

violence. It was revealed that the 32-year-old former member of the countrysconservative Progress party who had become ever more extreme in hishatred of Muslims, leftwingers and the countrys political establishment

had ordered six tonnes of fertiliser in May to be used in the bombing. While police continued to interrogate Breivik, who was charged with themass killings, evidence of his increasingly far-right world-view emergedfrom an article he had posted on several Scandinavian websites, including Nordisk, a site frequented by neo-Nazis, far-right radicals andIslamophobes since 2009.

The Norwegian daily VG quoted one of Breiviks friends, saying that hehad become a rightwing extremist in his late 20s and was now a strongopponent of multiculturalism, expressing strong nationalistic views inonline debates.

Breivik had talked admiringly online about conversations he had hadwith unnamed English Defence League members and the organisationStop the Islami cation of Europe (SIOE) over the success of provocativestreet actions leading to violence.

I have on some occasions had discussions with SIOE and EDL andrecommended them to use certain strategies, he wrote two yearsago. The tactics of the EDL are now to lure an overreaction from theJihad Youth/Extreme-Marxists, something they have succeeded in doingseveral times already.

Contacted by email, the EDL had not answered. The latest disclosures came as the Norwegian prime minister, Jens

Stoltenberg, ew by helicopter to a hotel in the town of Sundvollen close to the island of Utya where many survivors were taken andwhere relatives converged to reunite with loved ones or identify theirdead.

A whole world is thinking of them, Stoltenberg said, his voice crackingwith emotion. He said the twin attack made Friday the deadliest dayin Norways peacetime history. This is beyond comprehension. Its anightmare. Its a nightmare for those who have been killed, for their

Buildings around the capitallowered their ags to half-mastwhile people streamed to Oslocathedral to light candles andlay owers. Outside, mournersbegan building a makeshift altarfrom dug-up cobblestones. OnSaturday the Queen wrote toNorways King Harald to offerher condolences and express hershock and sadness.

On Saturday, July 9, 2011 - South Sudan will of cially become the worlds newestcountry.

The new state will secede from the rest of Sudan to its north. The birth of SouthSudan as an independent state is a culmination of decades of an uneasy marriagethat ended in divorce, following the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement(CPA) that effectively ended Africas longest civil war in 2005, and the subsequentreferendum that af rmed self determination in January 2011.

We congratulate the people of South Sudan on this joyful occasion. Saturday willindeed be a joyous but emotional day for the people of South Sudan because the

journey to this point has been very bloody. An estimated two million people arereported to have died, and another four million displaced. Much of the country wasleft in ruins.

However, there is a strong will and determination on the part of the South Sudaneseboth at home and in the Diaspora to turn their country around. This spirit must beapplauded.

Nevertheless, they will quickly learn, after the euphoria has died down, thatindependence is not an end in itself. Many African countries before them were similarlyecstatic when they attained independence about 50 years ago, but they remain largelyunderdeveloped as a result of gross mismanagement and bad governance. The peopleof South Sudan must not make the same mistakes or else this achievement will behollow.

They need good, sel ess and visionary leaders. With ethnic tensions alreadysimmering and ghting over oil, especially in the Abyei region, expected to continue, their work is well cut out.

Indeed the new leadership of South Sudan owes it to their people to ful ll theirdreams. Independence will restore the peoples dignity but it will not restore theirprosperity. Good leadership will.

Neighbouring states should be ready and willing to help the new country settle

down by lending their support in all the necessary areas. The North, having mid-wifed the birth of the new state, cannot now be seen to be standing in the way of itsstability. The two neighbouring states need each other.

    Congratulations South Sudan!
