Please notify Real Manage if you see someone dumping in our common areas. A preemergent has been applied to the lawn and planting bed areas. This prevents weed seeds from germinating. A 6-0-3 bio- organic fertilizer has been applied as well. This is the first fertilizer application that has been performed in several years. We will be following up with a post-emergent application that will kill our existing weeds. Because most of our common area lawns have heavy weed infestation you will notice significant browning out. This is the weeds dying out, beginning the process of reviving our lawn areas. There will be another fertilizer application in late April. The arbor care will begin in the park area with removal of lower limbs in pedestrian and traffic areas, removal of dead branches, and sealing of open wounds. (near Escarpment and N. Oasis). We have obtained bids on removal of the dead trees and proactive treatments to treat surrounding oaks, and will move expeditiously. We have to be vigilant in our community to stop the spread of Oak Wilt. It can be devastating to property values. Please read more information about Arbor Care in this newsletter. Please consult a certified arborist to perform any tree care. Oak Wilt (Continued on Page 3) Ask the Board Q: Do residents need any special permissions for home improvement projects? Answer from Mary Mendoza, Board President: Yes, thank you for asking. With the start of spring, there is always an increase in home improvement projects, which is great for the neighborhood. can spread through infected pruning tools and improper pruning sealing techniques. Persons performing tree care should also have general liability insurance. Three reputable companies that the landscape committee recommends are Bartlett Tree Experts, Austin Tree Experts, and Austin Tree Surgeons.

Green tip of the Month:Non-Toxic Cleaning Solutions

These days, everyone is looking for ways to save money. The cleaning solutions below are not only good for your wallet, they’re good for the environment!

Clean windows with 2 teaspoons vinegar to 1 quart warm water. Mix in a spray bottle & wipe with newspaper to avoid streaks.

1 cup of vinegar in the laundry removes unpleasant odor from clothes.

Oven cleaner: sprinkle water generously over the bottom of the oven. Then cover the surface with enough baking soda so that the bottom of the oven looks totally white. Sprinkle more water over the baking soda and let sit overnight. In the morning you should be able to wipe the

area clean with a damp rag.To keep your wood furniture looking

great and dust free, mix ½ teaspoon of olive or jojoba oil, and ¼ cup vinegar or fresh lemon juice in a jar. Dab a soft rag in the mixture and wipe onto wood surface. The covered mixture will keep indefinitely (always test in an inconspicuous area first).

Straight vinegar in a spray bottle is a great cleaner, as is grapefruit seed extract mixed with water. Use either in bathrooms, kitchens, spray into trash cans, etc.

Tea tree oil cleans mold and mildew. Mix 2 teaspoons with 2 cups water in a spray bottle.

important information about oak wilt! Please Read!

By the time this newsletter comes out, hopefully you will have heard (via the Yahoo Group or other means) that we have had some confirmed symptoms of Oak Wilt in our neighborhood, on the west side of Escarpment between Oasis and Oliver Loving. Please note that Oak Wilt spreads easily via beetles, improper pruning sealing techniques, and infected tools. Please note that this is not a good time of year to prune your trees. Oak Wilt damage can be detrimental to property values so it is important that neighbors be vigilant about tree care and please inform Real Manage if you suspect that any trees on or around your property or our common areas are infected. Our landscape committee is informed, thanks to a Zone Captain, and working on the issue (please see the landscape committee update in this newsletter). Below is information from the City of Austin regarding Oak Wilt.

The City of Austin is losing one of its most important assets--the beautiful live oaks and red oaks that form a shady, green canopy over the city. A contagious disease called oak wilt is threatening these oak trees. Over the past twenty years, Austin has lost more than 10,000 oaks to the deadly and infectious oak wilt disease. For both

individuals and the City as a whole, this loss manifests in increased utility bills, reduced property values, and a sense of devastation.

To address this issue, the City of Austin’s Parks and Recreation Department (PARD) began the Oak Wilt Suppression Project in 1988 and it originally ran until September 2002. The City worked in partnership with the USDA Forest Service, the Texas Forest Service, and local neighborhood associations. The purpose of the project was to educate the public, locate the disease, provide technical and cost-share assistance, and monitor treatments for any continued spread. From 2002 until January 2006, the City of Austin was not involved in the oak wilt suppression partnership. Beginning in 2006, the City’s Watershed Protection and Development Review Department (WPDR) renewed its partnership with state and federal agencies as well as neighborhood associations.

The City Arborist responsible for the Oak Wilt Suppression Program is: Chris Dolan (512) 974-1881 or [email protected].
