Students in Grade 12 FFFOODOODOOD & N& N& NUTRITIONUTRITIONUTRITION participated in a food demonstration where they learned how to extract gluten from flour.

Mrs. Solnik taught a challah baking class to the seniors where she demonstrated the mitzvah of Hafrashas Challah and spoke about the symbolism of each of the ingredients.

The Writer’s Craft class celebrated the end of the year with a poetry café at the Rosenblum home. Students were only allowed admission with proof of a poem or skit pertaining to the course. The group ate, shared poetry, talked about the future, and laughed at spoofs and re-makes of inside class jokes. A folk song about moving on and being grateful for the friendships we’ve made was played, and it was hard to hold back the tears. Girls received gifts, pens and journals, to ensure that they keep on “scratching away” and honoring the written word.

TTTHEHEHE LLLITERARYITERARYITERARY LLLOUNGEOUNGEOUNGE features writing by our very own students.

This piece was submitted to the UJA Creative Writing Contest by Grade 11 Student, Elisheva Nemetz. Elisheva will read her work at the UJA Award Ceremony this Sunday.

From the Holocaust to the Rebirth of a Country

By Eli Nemetz

I stand. The sky is dark where I stand. The sky is always dark in these camps. I am living. It doesn’t feel like living. My fight for survival is constant. I am fighting physically. I am a laborer in the camps. This is their means to destroy their “prisoners”. My labor is what is keeping them from killing me, or tossing me aside. More than physical, I fight emotionally for the community I used to know, for the remains of my family, in this hell. Most of all, I am fighting for myself. For survival. For hope.

I stand. 1945. The smell of gas is not as strong, but it still lingers. The gas is not the only thing in the death camp that lingers. Memories last longer than the smell of gas. I have survived, I have passed, but life is not a game. I have lost more than I have won. The fight for my community is lost. The fight for my family is no more. The fight for myself continues. My hope? My faith?

I stand. I see colors. The sky is blue. I have not seen colors in a long time. The smell of gas has faded. My old questions have faded. But my memories are imprinted. Imprinted in my mind, but stronger in my heart. I sometimes ask myself which will last longer, my memories or the numbers on my arm.

I stand. Magnificent colors surround me. I am an emotional laborer. Just like the country I belong to now. Israel. A country that fought its enemies physically and emotionally. This country has heard many words. Words that I have heard. Destroy, ruin, suffer, kill. We have both been ripped apart, wrecked, and beaten. Beaten until we had no breath. But we have both emerged. Strong before, but even stronger now. Have we won? Life is not a game. I see the country. I see the hills. I see the blue and white of the flag. I see her persecutors. I see mine. I walk.
