A new year dawns. A new day breaks. Pages wait upon which no one has written. The world lays ahead of us, like a field of freshly fallen snow, across which no living thing has walked—a pure, undisturbed white carpet, dazzling in the winter sunshine underneath a soft blue sky. These are poetic images that give us hope. And, of course, they ring true. Wherever we have been in the last year, the new year can be blessed. Whatever errors we may have made in days gone by, we can reach for better in 2013. We still live in a land of amazing opportunity, the economic doldrums notwithstanding. We still live in a nation of hope and potential. We have been raised in a culture of believing in the new day. Always. Never surrender this birthright of promise. But, in some parts of the world, where Christian civilization has not historically grounded the culture, where the name of Jesus has not been too often heard, looking forward to a new year isn’t much different than looking backward at the last. In a world defined by impersonal gods, or worse, angry gods, or even worse, no god at all, every day can be faced with dread. Without a loving God by your side, it can be a scary and hopeless world, indeed. Whether you are new to the faith or have been a Christ follower for years, going deeper through a small group Bible study and discussion groups helps apply Christlike character to daily living and real-life circumstances. Small groups are designed to take you deeper in faith development and move you forward on your spiritual journey. Many outreach ministries are a result of a small group’s going deeper and seeking ways to minister to others. “We enjoyed fellowship so much in our small group we decided we wanted to offer an opportunity for the whole church to participate,” shares Margo Royer. “Our small group decided to provide a dinner once a month and invite the whole church to eat and fellowship. Nell Campbell and I gathered some of our recipes and multiplied the ingredients to feed a crowd. Some of the small group members served the food, some cleaned-up and others washed dishes. A few weeks ago, as you know, I was in India. It’s a complex and fascinating weave, the subcontinent. Indian civilization is ancient, rich, and wonderful, on so many levels. The country, of course, also faces towering challenges. Poverty in India makes even the most destitute in the United States seem wealthy. Diseases long-ago forgotten here are endemic there. And, over one third of the world’s unreached people groups (languages and cultures that remain untouched by the Gospel, unaware of even the name Jesus) call India home.Believers in India understand that the new year can be filled with wonder, too. But, many live in areas where the neighbors don’t get it. More worrisome: many live in areas where their neighbors are hostile to even the mention of Jesus’ name. Here are three stories, fresh from the field of the India Gospel League (with whom we partner):Pastor V. in one of the northern states was recently kidnapped and murdered by Maoist rebels. The rebels demanded that his family pay a ransom; they didn’t have the money; the pastor was killed, brutally. Pray for Pastor V.’s family, as they struggle to face the new year. Their faith is deep and strong; the cost of their faith is high. Their hope is certain, but their hearts ache. Pastoring in

the United States has its challenges; kidnapping and murder are not among them. These are the words of a new village Christian named Pat K.: “I had been sick for many years when a pastor came to pray over me and my sickness. While the pastor was sharing the Gospel with me, God had mercy on my life and healed me. After this miracle, I asked the pastor to pray with me so that I could accept Jesus into my heart as my Savior. When the people of my village heard this they were outraged and would not allow my family to take water from the well. They continued to harass us daily as we continued to grow in our faith. We began to pray for the village, asking God to remove the rage from their hearts. God has heard our cries and the people have stopped harassing us, but there is still bitterness in their hearts. Please pray for our village that God will save them the same way that He has saved us through His great love.” Never take your freedom to follow Jesus for granted; never take access to fresh drinking water for granted.Pastor J.C. in northeast India writes: “Christ found me in my teenage years when I really felt His love and power working in my life. I accepted Him into my life as Savior. Later, my wife and I were called to reach the lost in northeast India. We began our ministry in tribal homes. Sometime after we began our work, a group of militant

Hindus kidnapped me and beat me until I was unconscious and threw me into the river. Two days later, I was brought home by God’s angels and rescued from the violence of the group. After this, we moved to another area where I was able to train hundreds of pastors to go out and spread the Gospel, among the people.” Pastor J.C. is one of the India Gospel League’s finest: brave, unwavering, loving deeply. He’s looking forward to the new year, even though the last was a rough one, because He knows Jesus is two steps ahead.Whatever the new year brings, be encouraged. Whatever challenges are thrown before us, look up and know God is watching and working. Everyone of the testimonies above is from someone who has seen Hell at work—but who also knows Heaven’s power is greater still. All will be well. Walk with Him. Trust Him. Change the world for Him. You can do it with us, at Madison Park, at home and abroad. Happy New Year, friends. And thank God you live in a world of promise.
