It also compromises the trust of the businesses who invest in it and the customers who buy their products.

FAQs

Does the Harris Tweed Authority make ‘Harris Tweed’ cloth or products? No. The Harris Tweed Authority does not manufacture cloth or products, it is the brand regulator and guardian of the famous ‘Harris Tweed’ Orb Mark.

What is the Harris Tweed Act? The Harris Tweed ActistheActofParliamentenactedin1993 thatmadestatutorythetruedefinitionofgenuine‘Harris Tweed’ and established the statutory body, the Harris Tweed Authority, to guard the Orb Mark.

What is the Orb Mark and where does it come from? The ‘Harris Tweed’ Orb Mark is the United

Kingdom’soldestcontinuouslyregisteredcertificationmark and is represented as a globe marked with jewels and surmounted by a cross pattée. The origins of the symbol are ambiguous and theories range from the heraldry of the Dunmore peerage to deriving from the old Gaelic name for the Harris township of Obbe (now called Leverburgh), An-T-Ob.

Why is tweed from Lewis, the Uists and Barra also called ‘Harris Tweed’? While originally established in Harris, the same skilled methods of weaving tweed were also historically conducted in neighbouring locations within Scotland’s Outer Hebrides. As demand increased, weavers from adjacent areas contributed to production and were recognised as makers of ‘Harris Tweed’.

Two colour palettes have been created for use in ‘Harris Tweed’ brand collateral – a primary colour palette and a secondary colour palette. The secondary colour palette is derived from yarn colours that form the base of many common ‘Harris Tweed’ patterns and can be traced back to lichens and other plants from the Outer Hebrides that were traditionally used to make dyes used in cloth production.

‘Harris Tweed’ registered marks may be reversed out of black or any single palette colour. Never use tints of colours.

These are the only colours that may be used in all media. Pantone Matching System colours, CMYK 4-colour process and RGB.
