Thousands of police officers, friends and neighbors from as far away as California lined Jackson Avenue in Seaford to honor U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Officer Capano, who died on New Year’s Eve in an act of bravery that took his life. The funeral procession left the Charles G. Schmitt Funeral Home on route to the St. William the Abbot Roman Catholic Church. The church was filled to capacity with New York State, Nassau County, local officials and digni- taries. During the service U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder delivered one of the eulogies. The most moving eulogy was written by Officer Capano’s 15-year-old daughter Natalie, a sophomore at St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School in West Islip (see right). As Officer Capano’s coffin was carried to the white hearse waiting in front of the church, a formation of eight police helicopters flew over- head and escorted the procession to St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale. Following prayers, the coffin, draped with an American flag, was lowered into the ground while bagpipes played. Officer Capano died in an attempt to stop James McGoey, who reportedly robbed a local Seaford drug store. The suspect was also killed. We’re looking for The Citizen’s First Baby of the Year! Honoring our kingThe United States does not have a king, but it does

have a national hero named Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,whose legacy we celebrate next Monday with a feder-al holiday. For us, his name is associated with civilrights and freedom, that most American of values.

And civil rights for all means we are all kings in acertain way.

Back when the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was enact-ed, Dr. King was present to watch the debates. He hadhelped make it happen by promoting Gandhi’s ideas ofputting pressure on government through peacefuldemonstrations.

1964 was alsothe first year ofthe New YorkWorld’s Fair, when New YorkCity was at thezenith of its eco-nomic power. The two observa-tion towers ofthe New YorkState Pavilion, now sometimesused as a back-drop for movies, were modern andnew. Now theyare rusty anddecayed, an embarrassment to all who drive by ontheir way to and from the city's two airports.

Here’s an idea. Why not try to recapture our glorydays by refurbishing – or at least painting – those twotowers and renaming them for our American hero, Dr.Martin Luther King Jr.?

Just think of the possibilities for inspiration!

A Seaford Wellnessthank you

To The Citizen:As we commence a new year, the

Seaford Wellness Council would liketo use this opportunity to express itsappreciation to the entire Seaford res-idential and business community for itssupport, both financial and societal, throughout 2011.

In these very demanding economictimes the council has been able to con-tinue to realize its mission, albeit underextremely tight fiscal constraints.

We unrelentingly maintain theSeaford Gazebo at the train station, organized the “Friday Night Live” pro-grams for the middle school-aged chil-dren, financed the anti-bullying pres-entation this past fall and conductedthe annual National Trails Day clean-

up of Tackapausha Preserve. TheEighth Annual Hot Chocolate 5KRun/Walk was the most successful todate, with well over 1,000 participants,a record for Seaford.

We have worked very closely with anumber of other community groupsthis past year. In conjunction with theEdwin Welch Jr. American Legion Post1132 we displayed the “Field ofHonor” twice; once in September infront of Seaford High School for thevery somber candle lighting 9/11remembrance ceremony and again inNovember at the Seaford train stationto commemorate Veterans Day.

In addition, with the Legion and BoyScout Troop 239 we participated in aceremony honoring those from Seafordwho died during World War I, in frontof the memorial plaque and garden atthe Seaford station. In August, we co-sponsored the last show in the SeafordPublic Library’s Summer 2011 ConcertSeries.

In what has become a tradition of theHot Chocolate Run/Walk, the Seaford

Chamber of Commerce’s 2011Businessperson of the Year was namedan Honorary Co-Starter of the event. The Seaford High School Key Club, anumber of Boy and Girl Scout troops, the Seaford Historical Society, theSeaford Fire Department and theNassau County Auxiliary Police assist-ed in the Run/Walk’s success.

We publicly thank the Seaford LionsClub for their fantastic monetary sup-port in sponsoring both the trophies forthe first-place winners from Seaford, male and female, at the Hot ChocolateRun/Walk and for supporting the post-Tackapausha Preserve cleanup volun-teer barbecue.

The council is proud of its role, along with other community groups, inmaking Seaford a better place to liveand work. We promise to continue thatrole throughout 2012. For those inter-ested in joining us, please go to ourwebsite (www.seafordwellness.com)for more information and for a list ofmeeting and event dates.

SEAFORD MANOR STUDENTS enjoy playing an Israeli ball game.

Manor School’s International Daycelebrates tolerance

In celebration of International Day,Seaford Manor Elementary Schoolstudents participated in Japanese crabraces, played an Israeli ball game anddiscussed the book, “The SandwichSwap” by Queen Rania of Jordan and

Kelly Di Pucchio, a story about toler-ance and acceptance.

The program, presented to studentsby the Shared Decision-MakingTeam, a committee of parents, teach-ers and administrators committed tohelping students make good choices, was designed to heighten students’understanding of traditions and cul-tures around the world, and help themto recognize and accept the differ-ences among students of various eth-nicities in their own classrooms.

Principal Debra Emmerich’s daugh-ters Valentina and Mary Kate, anaspiring teacher, led the students inthe activities and spurred a dialogueabout the children’s book that teststhe differences between two friendswho always eat lunch together — Lilywho eats a peanut butter sandwichand Salma who eats hummus — whena food fight breaks out.

What did they learn from the story?“To not be mean to one another,” “toalways try new foods” and “to be abucket filler not a bucket dipper,” stu-dents said, referring to the school’srobust character education program inwhich students fill their buckets withcharacter-building qualities.

Senator Schumer: Protect local drug storesby Laura Schofer

In the wake of the New Year’s Eve rob-bery of Charlie’s Family Pharmacy inSeaford, U.S. Senator Charles Schumercalled for new approaches to protect localdrug stores from pharma theft. Many ofthese robberies are due to the increaseduse of illegally obtained prescription painkillers like Oxycontin.

“Pharmacies are now a target,” saidSenator Schumer at a press conferenceheld at the Nassau County PoliceIntelligence Center in Massapequa onWednesday, January 4. “Over the pastthree years, at least 1,800 pharmacy rob-beries have occurred across the country. It seems that a fortune can be made in

[illegally] selling prescription drugs. Wemust fight back with every resource wehave to prevent further tragedy.”

Senator Schumer is calling for a three-pronged approach that includes beefingup security at pharmacies, providinglocal access to U.S. Drug EnforcementAgency data on pharma theft to help localpolice deter crime and putting in placetougher penalties on law breakers.

“There are protocols for pharmaciesthat could help decrease robberies,” saidSenator Schumer, who pointed to a pro-gram in Washington State that has helpedcut pharma thefts in half since 2008.“Bullet-proof glass, timed safes, stagger-ing supplies and silent alarms can serveas deterrents,” said Senator Schumer.

“I was very surprised to learn that localand state law enforcement [officers] donot currently have access to a compre-hensive database that catalogues the theftof controlled substances. This informa-tion must be reported to the DEA but isnot easily accessible by other lawenforcement.

“The New York/New Jersey HighIntensity Drug Trafficking AreaProgram seems to be well placed toassist in the creation of such a data-base for the New York Metropolitanregion. This could focus law enforce-ment efforts on hot spots where thegreatest theft is occurring and couldlead to further investigation by thecommunity into the underlying rea-

sons for the prescription drug abuse,”explained Senator Schumer.

Senator Schumer is pressing for passageof his bill that would direct the UnitedStates Sentencing Commission to expandsentencing for pharma robberies andincrease penalties up to 20 years in prison.

County Executive Edward Manganowho was also at the press conference, commended Senator Schumer’s efforts.“We need these federal resources to helpus. In sharing this information we will beable to prevent needless deaths,” saidCounty Executive Mangano. “In 2010,75 Nassau residents died as a result ofprescription opiates – that’s an average ofmore than one a week,” said Mr.Mangano.

As a nation we’ve come a long way in recognizing thedignity and civil rights of each and every individual.

We owe that progress in large part to Dr. MartinLuther King Jr. His wisdom, vision and faithtouched all our lives, and continue to do so in count-less ways.

Wantagh Middle School studentshave been busy this holiday seasonwith a variety of good-will events. The community service club,B.E.S.T. (Business and EducationServing Together) sponsored a schooltoy drive for children who happen tobe spending the holidays in the hospi-tal.

The day before they delivered thetoys, the advisors, Antoinette Brunoand Debra Nimmo, called the hospitaland heard that only five children werethere.

The purpose of the drive was toprovide these sick children with apresent to brighten their holiday sea-son. Job well done!
