social, and technological skills to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing and

increasingly global society.

SEAFORD SCHOOLS are an asset to EVERYONE

IMPACT of the STAR PROGRAM

STAR is the New York State Tax Relief Program that provides a partial exemption from school property taxes for owner occupied, primary residences.

Each homeowner who applies for the BASIC STAR Program will receive a reduction in their assessed value and their school property taxes!

IN 2014 EVERYONE MUST REAPPLY for the BASIC STAR

Program! Also, each homeowner who is 65, or older, can apply each year

for the ENHANCED STAR program. They may be eligible for a larger exemption based on their income.

How much will my taxes go up?

Ø  If next year’s assessments remain exactly the same as this year, your taxes will rise 3.59%. The school district does not control the property assessments, only the amount of the proposed tax levy.

Ø Nassau County controls the assessments; therefore the actual dollar amount change in your taxes is based on three factors:

Ø The tax levy. Ø Your individual assessed valuation. Ø Valuation of other properties within the school district.

Will assessment changes related to Hurricane Sandy effect my taxes?

Ø According to a Newsday article from May 9, 2013, the federal government’s Office of Housing and Urban Development will provide $300 million in funds to help stabilize the taxes for homes that were impacted by the storm and to keep the taxes flat for those that were not impacted. This is potentially good news for Seaford taxpayers and those from other impacted communities.

Ø  FIRST (Foundation for Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) – Robotics Regional Competition Ø  Team won two awards:

Computer Technology Accomplishments for 2012-2013

Ø  Deployed 247 new iMacs at High School and Middle School. Ø  Created a centralized copy center for the district and

consolidated over 120 printers. Ø  Incorporated a new web filter providing a richer learning

environment within the classroom. Ø  Created web lockers so students and teachers can share files

both in and out of school. Ø  Established a parent portal for “green” report cards. Ø  Installed security software on lab computers that keeps track

of individual sessions. Ø  Expanded Lexmark Testing and Grading Solution in all

buildings for SLOs, Common Core, etc. providing for data driven assessment and instruction.

Ø  Install battery backups which provide the district servers with both protection and hours of uptime.

Ø  Base wireless will be ready in late spring: libraries, high school auditorium, all cafeterias, conference rooms, computer labs and gyms.

What if the budget fails?

Ø  Board of Education will be required to adopt a contingency budget for the 2013-2014 school year if voters defeat the proposed budget twice.

Ø  The current tax levy will be capped at 0%! Ø  What does that mean?

Ø  The district must make additional reductions to the proposed budget totaling $1,644,408 for the coming school year

Ø  The district cannot expend public funds on the following: Ø Capital Projects Ø Computer Equipment Ø Student supplies Ø Charges for building usage Ø No hired consultants Ø No non-essential maintenance Ø Administrative Costs capped at prior year’s percentage
