THE SMART UTILITY® LAB
The Smart Utility® Lab is Black & Veatch’s mission critical platform and vendor-neutral facility to provide proof of concept, interoperability and end-to-end testing and technology training.
The Smart Utility® Lab allows Black & Veatch to propose, design and test complex network and utility automation
solutions to show our clients, in real-time, how various technologies and vendor equipment will function in the lab
environment. As a vendor neutral integrator, we currently house hardware from various equipment manufacturers in the
lab. This gives us the capacity to replicate and customize existing client infrastructure and the capability to provide the
most effective and efficient architecture for our clients.

END-TO-END TESTING | CLIENT TRAINING
Black & Veatch has continually maintained and updated
our lab over the last decade in order to support a broader
range of smart grid technologies. Some of the activities
performed in the lab include:
■■ Configuration, programming and testing of devices using the client’s integrated system architecture, such as:
■■ Real-time substation HMI
■■ RTU and data concentrator
■■ Protection and control device
■■ Protocol converter
■■ Power quality meter
■■ Programmable automation controller
■■ Proof of concept/design validation
■■ IEC 61850-based substation automation system designs including manufacturing message specification (MMS), generic object oriented substation events (GOOSE) , IEEE 1588, parallel redundancy protocol (PRP) and high-availability seamless redundancy (HSR) protocol
■■ End-to-end testing with common SCADA protocols (both serial and IP) such as DNP3 (IEEE 1815), Modbus, OPC and legacy SCADA protocols
■■ Client training
From planning to design to implementation,
Black & Veatch provides a wide range of network services
to assist utilities with upgrading or replacing network
infrastructure. The lab also allows us to test multiple
vendors’ equipment in one place, at one time, to get real,
comparable results. We can perform the following:
■■ Equipment standalone and interoperability testing
■■ Proof of concept/design validation
■■ Optical transport
■■ Security/firewall configuration testing
■■ Customer traffic modeling and flow testing
■■ Network protection testing
■■ Network performance testing
■■ Network troubleshooting
■■ Maintenance method of procedures (MOP)
■■ Client training
