2012 Annual Report

Dear FrienDs,

2012 marked a successful year, not only in terms of saving farms in the near term, but also for the future of farmland preservation. We expanded our reach and looked even farther ahead in 2012, creating and implementing a four year strategic plan, commissioning an agricultural study of farmland in Pierce County’s Puyallup Valley, and pursuing national accreditation through the Land Trust Alliance.

The 2012-2015 strategic plan retains and reaffirms our existing mission: to conserve farmland for organic and sustainable farming. However, for the purpose of economies of scale and mutual support among organic farmers, the plan also directs the organization to conserve farmland in concentration, and to promote agricultural corridors in the most threatened farming areas of Washington State. This resulted in a focus on farmland in Pierce County, where in September of 2012, we purchased the historic 120-acre Reise Farm, located in the Puyallup Valley. Fifty-four of those acres are now home to farmer Cheryl Oeulette’s thriving business, “Cheryl the Pig Lady & Friends”. Meanwhile, at our nearby Orting Valley Farms property, Sanford’s Farm has moved in next to Tahoma and Little Eorthe Farms, selling at local farmers markets and hosting restoration work.

Another exciting victory for organic farming came a little earlier, in July, with the preservation of Jubilee Farm in Carnation, Washington. About half of Jubilee previously had been conserved by the King County Farmland Preservation Program, and when there was an opportunity to partner with King County, PCC Farmland Trust jumped at the chance. Now, thanks to the vision of the Haakenson family, who farm Jubilee, and the combined resources of King County and the Trust, the entirety of this much-loved biodynamic farm will remain food-producing farmland for generations to come.

2013 promises to follow 2012’s lead, as we continue to meet and exceed goals in the areas of new donors, educational outreach, revenue, and acres in conservation. None of this, of course, could happen without you. We once again offer not just our gratitude, but an open invitation to get in touch and get involved with saving local organic farmland forever.

Looking Ahead: 2013PCC Farmland trust is pleased to announce that our application for Accreditation with the Land Trust Alliance (LTA) will be submitted in 2013.

In partnership with the Greater tacoma Community Foundation, the Trust for Public Land, and Globalwise, Inc., PCC Farmland Trust commissioned a study of farmland in the Puyallup Valley. This report will examine various farm and economic metrics in the Puyallup Valley, including opportunities for food processing and market expansion in the region.

Our On the Farm educational series debuts in 2013! On the Farm, sponsored by Chipotle Mexican Grill, gives community members a unique opportunity to head out to a working farm for a topical look at sustainable farming practices and farmland preservation across Washington State.

On-farm salmon habitat restoration work will continue in 2013, with support from Boeing Community Foundation and dozens of volunteers. Likely farms for habitat restoration include Sanford’s, Reise, and Growing Things Farms.

Next up for farmland preservation: properties in Pierce and Thurston Counties. Stay tuned for details.

2012 Key Accomplishments Preserved 208 acres of Jubilee Farm in July 2012, in partnership with King County through the County’s Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) Program, acquiring a conservation easement.

Completed the purchase of the historic 120-acre Reise Farm, located in the Puyallup Valley of Pierce County, near the city of Orting, in partnership with Pierce County Conservation Futures.

Held tours of Camelot Downs in the early spring, and a May tour of Bennington Place Farm and Williams Hudson Bay Farm in Walla Walla.

Held a September Fall Farm Jubilee in the Snoqualmie Valley, with over 600 participants.

Completed our third year of Local Chefs for Local Farms events, featuring a lineup that included Chefs Maria Hines, Jason Wilson, Thierry Rautureau, and Tamara Murphy.

Welcomed three new board members, who’ve contributed their expertise and time to the Trust: Beth Mondzac, Andrew Stout, and James Schroeder.

Held a highly successful summer campaign, our Future Farms Challenge, which included $50k raised by board, and matched doubly by other donors and supporters.

Attended 19 community events where we talked/tabled to thousands of people about PCC FT’s mission to preserve organic farmland in Washington State.

Completed annual monitoring on all 1,169 acres of PCC Farmland Trust conserved properties in Washington State, thanks to our Stewardship team and the help of dedicated volunteers.
