Rabbi Heifetz’s Monthly Word

Dear Hevre, I hope you've had a wonderful start to the fall season. By now you’ve most likely heard news of my decision to move on to new pursuits. July 2017 will be my last month as the Rabbi of Oseh Shalom, at the end of eleven years with our syna-gogue. I arrived at the decision with much difficulty, because I deeply value my connection to our community and the many individuals involved. However, I’m also eager to nurture and pursue a couple of side projects, which represent passion-ate and growing commitments. After I officially step down, I’ll be happy to con-nect socially with anyone from Oseh Sha-

lom who wishes to keep in touch. In the meantime, I particularly want to savor this next year with Oseh Shalom. After the High Holidays, I’m especially looking forward to the eight-day festival of Sukkot. Sukkot, which begins on the evening of Oc-tober 16th, is perhaps the most festive of all Jewish holidays. From the Executive Director Welcome to the October is-sue of the Shalom, which be-gins the High Holy Days. As we enter the High Holy Days, also known as the Days of Awe, I am happy to share the next physical upgrade to our Sanctuary, which makes a lovely 25th Anniversary gift to the congregation in times for our gathering together. Oseh Shalom has always

sought to be more inclusive, which is one of the reasons we offer sign language interpretation for High Holy Day services, the monthly Friday night Family Services, and upon request at other times throughout the year. Last year we upgraded our sound system and added live streaming of our ser-vices, which was appreciated by those who could not physically attend our services. This year to make ourselves more accessible and inclusive, Oseh Shalom has added ramps to the bima and the Torah table's platform. The ramps are mobile, allowing us to remove them when not desired and to be set up for services or ceremonies as needed. Additionally, we are setting out a mo-bile curbside ramp, which, in addition to the ramp we have built into the concrete curb at our disa-bled parking area, should make dropping off loved ones in front of the main entrance much easier. The ramps are Category 2 ADA approved. Member Irv Miller did invaluable research for us that helped select them. They are made possible by gifts from two congregant families based on member com-ments over the last year and a suggestion made to the Kadimah Committee several months ago. Once they were proposed -- and with funding in hand -- the Executive Committee rapidly approved the ramps, so we could have them in time for the High Holy Days. The bima ramp is ten feet long and thirty-six inch-es wide and will normally be set out on the Rabbi's pulpit side of the bima. Several chairs have been removed in the first rows on the left side of the Sanctuary to make way from the ramp. The Torah table platform's ramp is four feet long and will also be set on the left side of the table for easy access. (The choir is set up to the right of the Torah ta-ble.) The curb side ramp is three feet long and twenty-nine inches wide (which is the same width as the ramp for the Torah table platform). Orange cones will be put out on either side of the curb side ramp when it is in use. So, please drive carefully.

L’Shana Tovah!

I hope that this is the start of a sweet and meaningful year for all of us. It certainly will be one of transition for our Oseh Shalom communi-ty. In the letter that Allison and I wrote to the congregation concerning the Rabbi’s decision, we stressed that it is of major importance to en-sure continuity of our religious and community practices. Also it is important that the Oseh Sha-lom calendar will continue to be filled with a va-riety of activities that will appeal to all segments of our membership. If you take a look at the Oc-tober calendar of events, you will see just what I mean.

Along with our Rosh Hashana, and Yom Kippur services, and their own related activities, we will have the chance to celebrate the festival of Suk-kot together at services, and at the homes of our members who are opening their sukkahs for our annual Sukkah Hop. We will also have the opportunity to dance and sing together in cele-bration at the Simchat Torah B’Yachad event. This year Simchat Torah promises to be even more meaningful to Oseh Shalom as the eight month process of cleaning and repairing one of our Torahs begins.

There is also a variety of activities planned that are not directly related to the High Holidays and absolutely worth looking into. There is our week-ly open Israeli dance classes that take place eve-ry Wednesday night (except for Yom Kippur of course). The Life Long Learning Committee has a program scheduled towards the end of the month to discuss the impact of the American election on public attitudes towards the Middle East. Also at the end of the month we will be having our fourth annual Farm to Sukkah dinner, which features a meal prepared using locally sourced ingredients. And of course there will be Shabbat services each Friday night and Saturday morning.

Irv Miller will be organizing a training on how to help those who may need assistance traversing the bima ramp. Category 2 ADA approval means that individuals can use the ramp without assis-tance and that others may require assistance. The training is likely to be streamed and archived, so that members can also watch the training as an orientation from our website. As we begin celebrating the 25th Anniversary of our building here on Olive Branch Way, I can think of no better gift than making our services more accessible than the addition of these ramps for the congregation. Before concluding, I would like to thank all those who have helped in the office this summer: Judy Arnoff, Mona Davis, Lisa Karpf, Doris Kirschbaum, Mariyan Kolev, and Pauline Pivowar. I look forward to seeing you on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. May you be inscribed in the Book of Life and have a happy and healthy New Year. Barry Nove

As you can see, we mean it when we call our-selves a vibrant community. The religious services and community activities are open to everyone. Some of the activities may require reservations, and some may have a fee, or a suggested dona-tion, but they are all well worth taking the time to attend.

In regards to the rabbinical search, we are gener-ating an outline of how the process will begin. De-tails including a timeline will be made available in the near future. Our plan is to start with a short series of congregational meetings to create a broad list of what the needs, attributes, and “must haves” are for whomever we select as our next rabbi. The first of these meetings will most likely take place on a Sunday morning in the beginning of November. We hope that many of our mem-bers come to this session so we can get an accu-rate cross section of our community.

Details about all the activities mentioned in this article are available in the Shalom and on the Oseh Shalom website. You can also call the office with questions about them.

G’mar Chatima Tovah,

Andy Friedman

Shalom! My heart was racing. My palms were sweaty. I’d drunk a little too much coffee, so my adrenaline was pumping. Best of all, I had a huge smile on my face. What am I talk-ing about? The first day of religious school! The first day is always my favorite. I get to see fa-

miliar faces, see how tall everyone’s grown over the summer and meet younger siblings. My big smile comes from knowing I will be back with the kids. My racing heart and sweaty palms, well, that’s in anticipation of meeting the par-ents. The kids know me and my silly ways. It’s the parents that I need to impress! I’m happy to say that our first day was a success, and that is a huge relief. Several parents stayed for the assembly. We passed out the school’s refrigerator page and talked about our new ShalomLearning program. We will be hosting several workshops during Café Oseh this year in connection with Shalom-Learning. In the meantime, please make sure you read the weekly newsletter (it is emailed each week). Finally, if you have not already done so, please like our Oseh Shalom Religious School page on FaceBook (@OsehRS). The more peo-ple who like the page, the better chance we will have in marketing our amazing school to unaf-filiated families around the DC/Baltimore region. Social Action/Caring Shalom. By the time this newsletter comes out, it will be Rosh Hashanah and we will be preparing for our annual LARS Food Drive. Don't forget to take a bag (or 2) when you leave services the first day of Rosh Hashanah, and bring it back filled with non-perishable food items (suggested items are listed on the bags) on Yom Kippur.

What could be more appropriate than on a day when we are hungry we think about others who on a daily basis may go without food. Also, please keep in mind that although we have a big Food Drive over the High Holidays, LARS does need food during other times of the year as well. If you would like to bring food to Oseh, please remember the rules of Kashrut, and bring in only non-perishable items with long shelf lives. We hate to have food go to waste. In addition, please take a moment to consider doing a mitzvah. Being part of the Social Action/Caring and Support Committee is a wonderful way to help others in our Oseh Community. A lot of these ways of helping are on an “as needed” basis, such as providing a ride, making a meal or a simple phone call or an elder visit, sending a card, just to name a few. If you are interested in helping in any way, please go to: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0c48a5a92ea1fc1-oneclick More details are provided on the web-site. Sponsor a Friday Night Oneg Shabbat

Honor a loved one by sponsoring an oneg. This is a unique and special way to commemorate life events, such as birthdays, anniversaries, bar/bat mitzvahs and special additions to the family. You would also be contrib-uting to the spirit of community following erev Shabbat services. The oneg sponsor honors are listed in both the weekly bima notes and the Shalom. Each sponsor honor is $25; the funds benefit the entire congregation. Please notify Mona Davis at [email protected] or anyone of the Sisterhood members to sponsor an oneg.

Applications for Oseh Shalom's 2017

Camp JRF Scholarships Oseh Shalom is again offering financial assistance to help families send their kids to the Jewish Re-constructionist Federation's summer camp, Camp JRF, in the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania. It's been shown that attending a Jewish summer camp can be a truly transformative experience. All of the Oseh kids who have attended Camp JRF have had a wonderful time! Our scholarships cover a portion of Camp JRF's cost for families in financial need. The amount we can provide depends on how many families apply for assistance, their level of need, and the current amount in our scholarship fund. Since our fund is supported entirely by voluntary contributions from Oseh members, we encourage everyone to make a contribution, large or small, to the fund. Families seeking financial assistance should fill out a confidential application, which is reviewed by Oseh Shalom's scholarship committee. Please con-tact John Finedore:

[email protected] to obtain a 2017 application form. The deadline for submitting this form is January 15, 2017. Our scholarship committee will make funding decisions at that time. Preference is given to families apply-ing for support for the first time.

Families who apply for an Oseh scholarship should also apply for financial aid directly from Camp JRF. In addition, first-time campers should apply for a grant from "One Happy Camper," which provides grants (that are not needs-based) of up to $1,000 to children attending an overnight Jewish camp for the first time. To apply for a Camp JRF summer session and for more information about Camp JRF's financial aid and "One Happy Camper," visit the

Camp's website, campjrf.org. Camp JRF's sum-mer sessions do fill up, so we encourage you to act early!

SCRIP AND GIANT GIFT CARD PROGRAMS HAVE MERGED For those of you who are using Scrip—thanks a million. For those who haven’t, we hope you try it out soon. For those who have been buying Giant Gift Cards through Heidi, thanks a million too. Starting this month, the Giant Gift Card program is being rolled into the Scrip program. This will not change anything for those who have been buying the cards other than how Oseh orders the cards. With this merger, we are now offering all members the opportunity to put standing orders in with Scrip. You can tell me what you want to order on a monthly basis and then you can send in a pay-ment every month or authorize Oseh to make an automatic withdrawal from your bank. If you want to set up automatic withdrawals, contact Kelly for the form. If you are a Giant Card participant and want to add to your order, please let me know. You can adjust your standing order (maybe you want a Shell gas card) or just purchase additional cards as needed.

After growing up as a fully assimilated Jew, Paul Cowan embarked in his mid-thirties upon a journey to discover and appreciate his true identity and heritage. This “orphan in history” relates his search for these roots, detailing the path he took from his Park Avenue home to nineteenth-century Lithuania to a contemporary Israeli kibbutz, leading to remarkable personal discoveries that will move everyone who has yearned to know more about their past.

Join us on Sunday, November 13, 2016 at 10 AM for a book talk brunch led by Dr. Eliyana Adler, Associate Profes-sor of History and Jewish Studies at Penn State. She is a historian of the modern Jewish experience in Eastern Europe with particular interests in the history of religion, education, and gender studies. New copies of the book (originally published in 2002 by Jewish Lights Publishing) are available on www.amazon.com and from Barnes and Noble (www.bn.com ) for $16.99. Used copies are offered for less. Please contact Marla Singer (301-725-5338) or at [email protected] if you need help obtaining a copy.

Oseh Shalom is a vibrant, inclusive Reconstructionist synagogue, with members throughout the Baltimore-Washington area, dedicated to providing a supportive community for celebrating

Jewish life through prayer, learning and social action.

believed that the verse referred to the divine Clouds of Glory that miraculously shielded the people on their journey. Another sage, Rabbi Akiva, believed that the verse referred literally to the simple huts that the people built for shelter during that time. The first opinion emphasizes our vulnerability: it was God who took care of us then, and none of us ever ought to consider ourselves an island of pure independence. The second opinion highlights our adaptability and creativity: we persevered and eventually thrived under difficult circumstances and with simple means. Together, the two opinions suggest a message of strong spiritual balance. The sukkah embodies the dual message that our lives are in many ways fragile and dependent on count-less forces beyond ourselves, and yet our ingenuity, dedicated actions, and thoughtful partnerships can help us to live with grace and simplicity. Besides these meanings, many Jews find joy and comfort in the relatively simple acts of carpentry, pruning, and other outdoor work typically involved in the construction of the sukkah. After the in-tensely prayerful, introspective, and spiritually weighty holiday of Yom Kippur, sukkah builders espe-cially welcome the mild outdoor physicality as a change of pace. Building a sukkah can be easy and fun. You can find many kits and sets of instructions to help. Local judaica stores often stock supplies. I bought my sukkah kit online years ago from The Sukkah Pro-ject (www.sukkot.com). Occasionally I make minor adjustments and improvements. Recently I bought new oil lamps to add festive light to the setup. If you decide to build a sukkah, then you, too, can also personalize and improve it over the years. Best wishes for a Shanah Tovah, a happy new year. I look forward to sharing the Jewish fall holi-days at Oseh Shalom, including the wonderful festival of Sukkot. Shalom, Rabbi Doug
