  • January 11, 2015 The First Sunday After Epiphany

Will You Commit to the 3-2-1 Challenge for 2015? My text and sermon for Sunday, January 4 focused on the coming of the Magi to worship the Christ child in Bethlehem. Those Magi relate to Jesus based on what they can give to him out of their treasure chests of blessings – gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Their model offers a stark contrast to King Herod’s interest in Jesus, which was based on using Jesus for his own selfish purposes. As we begin the new year of 2015, I invite you to join me in committing to the 3-2-1 Challenge, which includes:

➌ Commit to praying for at least three minutes every day as you listen to God and pray for yourself, your family, work setting, church, and the needs of our community and world.

➋ Commit to being the presence of Christ in word, deed, and attitude, seeking to make a difference in two places or with two people. I hope one of those places you chose is where you spend a large amount of your time – in your workplace, school, or where you volunteer and serve in our community.

➊Commit to increasing your financial support for God’s work at Oakmont by one percent over what you currently give, understanding that the biblical goal for generous giving is called the tithe, or 10 percent of our income. For example, if you are giving three percent of your income now to God’s work, will you prayerfully consider increasing that amount in 2015 to four percent, and incrementally working your way toward God’s goal of generous giving for you?

I believe that God will do great things through us, for us, and in us if we sincerely commit to the 3-2-1 Challenge for 2015. I promise to you and to God that I will make these commitments for the coming year. Will you join me in sharing in God’s work together through Oakmont by way of our prayers, talents and time, and generous financial giving?

    Your Pastor,Greg Rogers

  • Our church will be offering a 10-week study (beginning January 25) on Sunday mornings during our three Sunday School hours that teaches how to build positive relationships with people far from God and share our Christian witness with them. This study will use the two studies, Becoming a Contagious Christian and Just Walk Across the Room, to guide our learning.

During each Sunday School hour Beth Thompson and Joshua Breazeale will be leading the study for a large group in the Multi-Purpose Room. Many of the adult Sunday School classes have decided to be a part of this study as a part of a large group and will meet with their class in the Multi-Purpose Room each week. The church will be providing a copy of the work book for the study for each person.

If you are not currently a part of a Sunday School class, the large group meeting in the Multi-Purpose Room each week is just the place for you.

  • Will You Commit to the 3-2-1 Challenge for 2015?

SHARING Starting today our church will be offering a 10-week study on Sunday mornings during our three Sunday School hours that teaches how to build positive relationships with people far from God and share our Christian witness with them. This study will use the two studies, Becoming a Contagious Christian and Just Walk Across the Room, to guide our learning. During each Sunday School hour Beth Thompson and Joshua Breazeale will be lead-ing the study for a large group in the Multi-Purpose Room. Many of the adult Sunday School classes have decided to be a part of this study as a part of a large group and will meet with their class in the Multi-Purpose Room each week. The church will be pro-viding a copy of the work book for the study for each person. If you are not currently a part of a Sunday School class, the large group meeting in the Multi-Purpose Room each week is just the place for you. For those teaching Sunday School with preschoolers, chil-dren, and youth or otherwise serving on Sunday mornings, Pastor Rogers will be teach-ing a study of the books. This class meets Wednesdays at 6 p.m. in Room 606.

Sermon SeriesPastor Rogers also will be

preaching on the emphasis of Faith Sharing during our

two Sunday morning worship gatherings in conjunction

with our studies of Becoming a Contagious Christian and Just Walk Across the Room.
