The 2012 financial giving numbers that you see on the adjoining page are cause for celebration and prayerful gratitude to God. We all know that the recovery now in place from our 2008 economic downturn remains on tenuous footing, showing signs of improvement one moment, but taking two steps backward the next moment. Your giving last year to God’s work at Oakmont, our community, and world, therefore, is a testimony to your faithfulness to be generous givers and God’s blessing in response to that generosity.

In a nutshell, our total receipts for the year were approximately $15,000 short of our $1,769,000 budget. In addition, you gave over $109,000 in special gifts to community, state, and world missions and ministries beyond Oakmont. We have seen lives changes—both ours and others—as we have lived out the truth of Jesus’ words, which the Apostle Paul quotes in Acts 20:35: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

Last year I shared our 2011 giving update and referenced Reggie McNeal’s book Missional Renaissance: Changing the Scorecard for the Church. McNeal states that most churches look at financial giving, Sunday attendance, baptisms, and new members as the key metrics of health and vitality. He suggests we consider a new scorecard for measurement. I offer a brief list once again of his new scorecard suggestions:

• tracking the number of volunteer hours of people in community service and mission trips.

• counting the spiritual conversations and intentional acts of blessing to others.

• monitoring the amount of time spent in worship where the community is on the agenda.

• listing the number of people reporting they are praying faithfully, receiving answers to prayer, and the time spent in prayer in corporate church gatherings.

• recording the number of people who report improved marriages, family life, and friendships, and who engaged in financial planning or created a life development plan.

• reporting on the use of facilities for people’s personal and spiritual growth, and the use of the building by school and community groups.

• tracking how the church’s web site is providing training, sharing personal stories of spiritual transformation, or the number of computers church members or businesses have recycled to people who can’t afford them.

Our deacons are currently reading McNeal’s book and dialoging together on what a new scorecard might mean for Oakmont. Certainly we would die on the vine if financial giving, attendance, baptisms, and new members ceased to be. But what are the possibilities you see for creating new metrics and scorecards? How might those new measurements keep on us track in being God’s missional people? How would they re-frame our call to be the presence of Christ wherever we go and whatever we do?

I am glad that we go to church – and that we are the church, His people, wherever we go in His name!

Grateful to be your Pastor,

Greg Rogers

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. Lent is the period from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday, and lasts six and a half weeks (40 days not counting Sundays). During Lent, Christians purify themselves by praying, fasting, repenting of their sins, and making changes and sacrifices in their lives. The final week of Lent is called Holy Week; during this period, Christians reflect specifically on the last days of Jesus Christ’s life.

On Ash Wednesday, worshipers attend services at which they receive on their foreheads ashes from burned palms. A minister marks the forehead of each worshiper, often saying, “Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return.” Ashes are viewed throughout Christian history as a symbol of humility and sacrifice for those who wear them.
