WelCome Continued...

Each week throughout the sailing season the Club runs its own racing from April until the end of December on Saturday afternoons, Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings during the summer season and on Sunday mornings during the winter season.

The Club has a growing junior section with regular training which helps to develop young sailors into very competitive sportspeople.

Ashore, the facilities of the harbourside and the RTYC Clubhouse provide a great venue to view the sailing in the Bay in a relaxed atmosphere, whether from the Club or the terraced garden. The facilities of the Club include; changing areas with showers, meeting rooms, offices, a restaurant, our Corinthian Room for social activities and, of course, the RTYC bar.

This is a friendly club, relaxed in its style but professional in its standards, where members help run the events and championships, and where the future of sailing and all watersport is paramount. It is also a place where good friendships and camaraderie flourish.

The RTYC is not just a yacht club, it is a way of life for those who enjoy the sea and great company!

the Clubhouse

The Royal Torbay Yacht Club is a fantastic venue for meeting friends and fellow sailors, for dining and enjoying a drink and for relaxing and soaking up the sights, sounds and atmosphere of the amazing sailing waters of the Bay.

Facing south and located overlooking Tor Bay, the Clubhouse and its newly-improved garden provides a fantastic venue for its members and visitors. It is housed in a unique Victorian building that has had significant improvements over recent years to make a comfortable club bar, a great location for parties and events plus a good restaurant and other club facilities.

It has offices and a committee room on the ground floor and is the focus of all the big sailing and other events that choose the RTYC to host their championships. The Club has several computer stations to get up-to-date weather forecasts; results of racing and for all other hi-tech uses. Usually, results are available before crews are even ashore.

There are large changing rooms and hot showers for both sexes.

membership

If you are interested in sailing, powerboating, cruising, rowing or, in fact, any watersport then the RTYC is a club that can help you develop your interest. Should your interest only extend to spectating, or helping to manage club activities, then it is still an excellent club for you.

If you just want to enjoy the ambiance of the Club, meet with people and make friends, again, this club is a focus. We are also very much about enjoyment and fun and while we get competitive about our racing we make sure we have fun and enjoy our ‘Apres’ boating time.

For families with younger children the Club offers an excellent junior section, a number of training courses and events and many sailing and racing evenings. This then creates its own social scene so parents can join the Club, get involved and make new friends.

Club sailing & raCing

RTYC is an active club with regular sailing for its members at least from April to New Year’s Day. We have a range of racing fleets from the big IRC yachts to Cadets and RS Fevas for the junior section. Should you want to, there is no excuse for not being able to get on the water. The classes do change as the Club or, more importantly, its members evolve to new fleets.

We presently race:

RS Feva29ersPY DinghiesLaser SB3’sSportsboatsFolkboatsIRC Cruiser/RacersLocal Handicap Cruisers The Dayboat Fleet is still dominated by Folkboats and the Sports Boats driven by an SB3 fleet. However, other boats are sailed in the PY Dinghy Class: the choice is yours.

We currently run racing every Sunday morning for Sports Boats, Cruisers and Dayboats from our committee vessel, Mary Gurine. The racing for Juniors and PY Dinghies is on Saturday afternoons. However, the Junior fleet sail regularly on Friday evenings and any other time they get a chance, a reflection of their enthusiasm!

From mid-April to mid-September there is racing for every class on Wednesday evenings. It just gets too dark to race outside of these dates. The Club is fortunate to have its own 34ft committee vessel; an ex- trawler that is well equipped to run racing in most weathers. Therefore, we normally race from windward starts and run courses of choice for the fleets, dominated by windward/leewards.

Club sailing & raCing Continued...

RTYC offers some of the most extensive and best club racing to be found in the South West.

In addition to regular club sailing we organise a number of special races and events during the year mainly for the cruiser/racers. These include weekend races outside the Bay to the Yealm, Salcombe and Dartmouth in conjunction with the South Devon Combined Yacht Clubs. We also run the ever popular Offshore Week, usually in June, where the fleet races to the Channel Islands and then to ports in Brittany and Normandy. There are special day races such as the Teignmouth Outfall Race and Bill’s Goblet, a pursuit race for all classes.

The RTYC is also the organiser of the 620-mile Yachting Monthly Triangle Race from Torquay to Kinsale in Ireland, to Treguier in Brittany and back to Torquay. This popular two-handed race for cruisers takes place over 12 days allowing for two or three days in each stopover. As well as being a great challenge as an event, there is always a great social atmosphere in port.

CruisingWhile the focus of the Club is still on racing, many yachts cruise the beautiful coastline of South Devon and Cornwall. We are privileged to live and sail here. Many sailors combine racing with cruising and social gatherings during weekends away and offshore and these are great fun. The Club is hoping to reinvigorate the Cruising Section over the next few years with additional weekend events.

Visiting YaChtsmen

It is always a pleasure to welcome visiting yachtsmen and we encourage the use of our club’s ample facilities and welcome visitors to participate in our various social, cruising and racing activities. Being in close proximity to Torquay town centre, there is an abundance of accommodation from B&B to four-star luxury, a whole host of restaurants and, for the more adventurous, plenty of nightlife.

The Harbour has a large events pontoon and a town dock pontoon to accommodate visiting yachts and a crane situated on the South Pier for boat lifting. There is ample parking, with the Clubhouse just one minute from the car park and two minutes from the dinghy park and yacht berths.

torbaY WeekTorbay Week is the premier Regatta in the Bay and one of the South West’s top events. RTYC plays an important part in this event which ensures good racing in all classes. The IRC and Cruiser fleets classify the event as one of the best racing series in the UK. RRacing is usually over five days and can involve up to five circuits, running simultaneously, to accommodate the various fleets; Juniors, dinghies, dayboats and sportboats, PY Cruisers and IRC Yachts all have their own courses. The week also coincides with the historic Torbay Royal Regatta which involves watersports including rowing plus significant entertainment such as fireworks, flying displays and a great social time. The Club is buzzing around this time. It truly is a great event to enjoy!

motor boating

Throughout the history of the Royal Torbay Yacht Club there have been many members who have owned motor yachts, launches and more recently power boats. The Club has had a long association with the Cowes – Torquay – Cowes power boat race and the Offshore Racing Drivers Association (ORDA). Both organisations use the Club’s extensive facilities when they stage their events.

The Royal Torbay Yacht Club has developed a wide range of RYA supervised courses in Power Boat Handling, Navigation and First Aid for the power boat enthusiast whether they are beginners or have moved on to a higher level of proficiency.

We welcome everybody who has a genuine interest in power boating, whether an owner or crew. To this end, we recognise more than half the people going afloat are interested in power craft and we would like to invite you to apply for membership.

The Royal Torbay Yacht Club has an increasing membership from the power boat sector and in recognition of this we are proposing that a Motor Boat Squadron be formed with its own programme including flotilla cruises, lectures and social events based in the Clubhouse.

torbaY Youth sailing trust (tYst)The Junior and Youth section of the RTYC provides sailing for club members under the age of 18. Through the Torbay Youth Sailing Trust we offer sailing courses for eight to sixteen year olds to learn to sail following the RYA Onboard scheme.

The Trust owns its own boats and has a team of RYA-trained volunteers who run its activities. During the summer season, the Club runs Friday Junior Nights for children to go sailing and have fun in Cadets, RS Feva’s and RS Qba’s. After Friday sailing all the junior members and families go to the Clubhouse for supper and a social get-together.

The Club races two very active junior classes, the International Cadet and the RS Feva. Older RS Feva sailors are now moving up to 29ers.

The Club is an RYA Volvo Champion Club running coaching sessions throughout the year to develop the racing skills of its junior members.

Junior club racing takes place on Saturday afternoons and Wednesday evenings. New junior members are encouraged to join in with the junior racing. Extra junior race training is run regularly on Saturday mornings during the summer.

a superb Championship & eVent VenueFor Yachts, Keelboats, Sports Boats, Dinghies and Powercraft

RTYC offers fantastic facilities, great experience and professionalism in running championships at all levels on one of the best sailing waters in the UK and, perhaps, Europe.

It was not by accident that the Bay was the 1948 Olympic sailing venue, nor that it was the summer home of the great J Class Yachts. But, it has been far more for far longer. The first regatta was in 1813 (we shall be celebrating the 200th regatta in 2013) and since then the Bay, and for the last 150 years the Club, has been the focus of countless yachting and sailing events.

Why?There is nowhere better.

The excellent gradient of the new 12 metre wide slipway is not affected by the tide. At the top of the slipway we have stackable launching trolleys plus two fresh water taps.

Dinghy parking is available for between 20 and 30 dinghies and there is parking for 100 boats along the adjacent pier.

The new Town Dock is linked to the shore and has a large events pontoon to accommodate visiting yachts. The MDL Marina is adjacent to the Town Dock.

The Club owns its own 1,000kg crane which is situated on South Pier for boat lifting. Heavier lifts can be undertaken by the local stevedore.

The two level car park is just 30m from the dinghy park and 50m from the RTYC clubhouse. Weekly car park tickets for any of the Torbay car parks are available from the Tourist Board next to the harbour.

However, prime periods of each year are now getting booked up so, please, consider us at your earliest opportunity.

LOCATION

The English Riviera is set around Tor Bay, South Devon, one of the most beautiful bays in Europe, and includes the three towns of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham.

ACCESSIBILITY

There are direct motorway, rail and air links to the English Riviera. It is only 191 miles from London and 185 miles from Birmingham with the M5 motorway reaching Exeter from the Midlands, London and North. There are also rail mainline connections to Torquay, Exeter and Bristol airports offer regular national and international flights.

CLIMATE

The English Riviera has one of the most equable climates in Britain. The long warm summers and mild winters combined with an east-facing Bay, create a haven for palms and other sub-tropical plants. Sunlight hours exceed the national average.

Balmy autumns, fresh springs and mild winters first established the resort as Britain’s favourite during the times of the Napoleonic Wars and has since looked after its cherished palm trees and the well-being of its visitors.

Average temperature readings around the world during the months of July and August 2009:

Damp Detectives was until recently a part of Complete Restoration Services, a Company founded 20 years ago by the owner Robert Horne. Highly experienced in drying and dehumidification, Robert has studied all that the conventional markets in the USA, Germany and Sweden are able to offer. As a previous Commanding Officer at sea, his maritime background has equipped him with the skills to look beyond the obvious solution.

He is regularly called upon as a trouble shooter by Insurance Companies, large Building firms and Housing Associations, to track ingress of damp which standard practices are simply inadequate to cope with.

Independent Damp Surveyors in Devon, Cornwall and Somerset

- Mould & damp surveys - Friendly, reliable service- Small to large jobs - All work guaranteed

Mould always grows in damp areas right? No not at all. Often mould will grow in dry areas because there is damp in another part of your home providing the moisture it needs to grow. It can be an indicator of a problem elsewhere that may not be easy to spot. Our extensive mould and damp surveys will locate the source of your mould or damp and show you how to put it right often with little expense.

We are independent surveyors which ensures that we are unbiased toward one particular solution and as a result we do charge for our surveys. The benefit of this is that you can be guaranteed of an honest solution that WILL (if implemented) fix the problem. You can also be sure that we will only tell you there is a problem if one exists!
