Originally founded by a group of gentlemen back in 1863, sometwentyyearslateron1stJanuary1885,theRoyalTorquayYachtClubmergedwith theTorbayandSouthDevonCluband thenameofthecombinedclubswaschangedtotheRoyalTorbayYachtClub(RTYC).

Today it isa thrivingClubandextendsawarmand friendlywelcome to members, their guests and visiting yachtsmen.Throughout the year we have active racing, sailing andsocialprogrammes.Thereisneveradullmoment;theclubisconstantlybuzzing.

Our fully facilitated clubhouse is the perfect place tomeet fellowyachtsmanandtake in the fantasticviewsof TorBay’s sailingwaters.Conveniently located theclubis justastonesthrowfromthebustlingnightlifeofTorquaywithitsmanybars,restaurantsandnightclubs.

Over the recent years, attention has beenconcentrated on ways of improving the Club’sfacilities and providing the members with a clubinwhichtheycanbeproud.Thesemeasureshaveincluded schemes for re-development of thepremises, the formalisingof theClub’sbusinessmanagementaswellascontinuing toseeknewmembers and to host prestigious waterborneevents.

HISTORY

In1875,theTorquayYachtClubwasformedinaroomintheQueensHotelwithSirLawrancePalkasCommodore.ThenewclubwasgrantedanAdmiraltyWarranttoflythedefacedBlueEnsignandlaterintheyear, was granted a Royal Warrant, with the club’s name beingchangedtotheRoyalTorquayYachtClub.

Tenyears lateron1st January1885, theRoyalTorquayYachtClub merged with the Torbay and South Devon Club whichwasfoundedin1863andthenameof thecombinedentitywaschangedtotheRoyalTorbayYachtClub.Inthefollowingyear,thefreeholdofthelandonwhichtheClubpremisesstoodwaspurchasedforthesumof£650.

In1886,theClubhelditsfirstRegattaoverthreeseparatedays in June, July and August when the prize moneyrangedfrom£4to£25.Thereafter,itwasthepracticetoholdaRegattaononedayineachyearandwithintwoyearstheprizemoneyhadincreasedsubstantiallytobetween£40and£60.In1914,theRegattawasabandonedbecauseoftheoutbreakofwar.

During the second World War, the Club sufferedmanydifficultiesincludingbombdamage.Urgentrepairshadtobecarriedoutin1944onthebilliardroomceilingwhichhadbecomedangerous.Moreseriously,becauseofthewar,in1945and1946whisky was rationed in the Club with membersbeingrestrictedtotwosingleoronedoubleperdaywithnowhiskybeingservedonTuesdaysorFridays!!

In1948,theXIVOlympiadSailingRegattawasheldinTorbay,theClubsubscribing£256totheexpenseaccountandalsogivingacocktailpartyforparticipantsandCommittee.

Duringthe1950sabarwasbuilt(memberspreviouslybeingservedbystaff in theClubrooms), theFestivalofBritainRegattawasheld, theClubprovidedaroomasanofficefortheGATTconferenceandtheEdinburghCupracesweresailedinTorBay.

In1961, theTorquayCorinthianYachtClubamalgamatedwiththeRoyalTorbayYachtClubandthemergedorganisationsthencontinuedtooperateunderthelattername.Needlesstosay,themergerbroughtwithitanincreasedmembershipandalsoanadditionalFlagOfficer,asecondRear-Commodore.

TheClubwashonouredin1964tohaveacrewofmembersselectedtorepresentGreatBritainintheOlympicGamesinTokyointheInternationalDragonClass.Theyfinishedjust outside of the medals in fourth place after lyingsecondformostoftheweek.

Throughout the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s,theClubcontinuedtohostmanyprestigioussailingchampionships including, amongst other events,theOneTonCupandtheDragonGoldCupandhasmanagedtoachieveajustifiedreputationasaleader in race management and organisation tothisday.

In 1993, it was agreed that the members ofTorquayRowingClubwhohadbeenneighboursintheharboursidepremises,shouldalsobecomemembersoftheClubandhavecontinuedtobesoeversince.

SAILING IN THE BAY

• Tor Bay is a fantastic venue for sailing events. Home of the 1948Olympics,theClubplayshosttomajorworldandnationaleventsuptothepresentday.TheBayisfivemilesacrossbytwomileswidewithnoobstructions.Depthofwaterisanaverage10metresacrosstheBayatlowtide.Tidestreamsareusuallylessthan1knotintheBay.

• A new 12 metre wide slipway allows launching at all tidestatesintoawellprotectedharbour,givingracinginanywinddirection.Theminimumwaterdepthisupto2.5metresatlowwaterspringsintheharbourandsomeberthsareavailableat3metresdepthonlowsprings.

•ThenewTownDockforkeelboateventsallowsalargearea of pontoon berths with a minimum of 2.5 metredepth, joined to the quayside and close to the Club.TheadjacentMDLmarinaprovidesadditionalvisitorsberths.

• Other than East and South Easterly winds theBay has excellent shelter from high seas with theprevailingWesttoSouthwestwinds,whichgivetrulyperfectsailingconditions.

• The Club has highly experienced racemanagement teams with a dedicated 34ftcommitteeboat,supportboatsandmark layers.The racing water is just outside the harbour sofor many events the Bay provides a naturalamphitheatreforspectators.

•Coursesareusually setwithin theBay,usingGPS,awayfromtheshorebutinsidethetideline.ThisgivestruewindswithminimaltIdeeffect.

Theexcellentgradientofthenew12mwideslipwayisnotaffectedbythetide.At the topof theslip there isspace toaccommodate launchingtrolleysandtherearetwofreshwatertapsforhosingdown.

There are toilets and showers in the Club changingroomsaswellaspublicfacilitiesadjacenttothedinghypark.

Thetwolevelcarparkis just30mfromthedinghypark and just 50m from RTYC. Weekly car parktickets for any of the Torbay Council car parksare available from the Tourist Board next to theharbour.

JUNIOR SAILING

ThroughTorbayYouth Sailing Trust theCluboffers SailingCourses tochildren between the ages of 8 to 13, following the RYA Onboardscheme. The Trust owns its own boats and has a team of trainedvolunteerswhorunitsactivities.Duringthesummerseason,FridayJunior Nights are held for children to go sailing in a variety ofboats.

TORBAY YOUTH SAILING TRUST (TYST)

In theautumnof2007a fewRoyalTorbayYachtClubmembersmettosee ifawaycouldbe found toencouragechildren to try sailing.OutofthismeetingtheTorbayYouthSailingTrustwasformed,undertheumbrellaoftheRoyalTorbayYachtClub.Charitablestatuswasachievedinthespringof2008.

The Trust decided early on to follow the Royal YachtingAssociation Syllabus and joined the RYA On-Board Schemedesigned to introduce a million children to sailing before2012.Moneywas raisedandsixclubmembers trainedasdinghy instructors. Initially, threeLaserPicoDinghieswerepurchasedanda fourthwas loaned.TheTrust’s facilitieswere inspected by the RYA and permission granted toconductRYAsailingcourses.

In 2008, four two day courses were run for childrenbetween the ages of 8 and 13. Sixty-one childrenattendedthesecourses,withthemajoritygainingtheirRYAStageTwoCertificate.

FromtheoutsettheTrustwaskeentoinvolveparentsand encourage children who enjoyed the sailingexperience to continueby joining theRTYC juniorsection. Junior RTYC membership is includedin the course fees. The Trust aims to keep itssailing equipment in good condition with all ofthe Instructors fully qualified and CRB checked.The Trust uses the facilities of the Royal TorbayYachtCluband runs its sailing courses from theharboursideinTorquay.

The Corinthian Room is the perfect venue for private parties, luncheons, buffets, banquets and wedding receptions. It can seat up to 120 for a sit down meal or up to 180 for a buffet or evening reception. There is a wide choice of cuisine for all palates and we have a fully licensed bar. The room enjoys magnificent views across the bay.

We have exceptional catering facilities and deliver to the highest standard using fresh seasonal produce, prepared by our in house chef. If you are looking for a more intimate affair we also have our Dining Room which seats 60 persons. Whatever the event our co-ordinators can provide a tailor-made package to suit your every requirement.

Our friendly staff are on hand to ensure your event runs smoothly combining the highest level of service. Whatever your event we pride ourselves in being able to cater for any function and will work with you to ensure it’s a celebration to remember.
