ROYAL LONDON YACHT CLUB 1838
Cowes Week 2019Programme of EventsFriday 9th August to Sunday 18th August
Introduction by the Commodore The Royal London Yacht Club regatta was first organised on 1st to 3rd August 1885 to precede the four-day Royal Yacht Squadron regatta, and therefore provide a full week’s sailing before the trek north for the “Glorious 12th”. This regatta became Cowes Week, the longest established and biggest regatta of its type in the world.
We continue this long tradition by celebrating Cowes Week every year in the greatest style and 2019 will be no exception. There are some old favourites, and some innovative new events taking advantage of the very special position of our beautiful Regency Club House right in the centre of the Parade overlooking the Solent and daily racing.
Our Chef Tomas and his team and Laila our Front of House Manager with Scott our Steward have all built an enviable reputation over the past year for providing the best food and service in Cowes. Be sure to enjoy this special experience during Cowes Week, whether calling in for a bar meal or booking one or more of the formal events detailed in this programme.
Whilst Rear Commodore Yachting and her team will be ensuring that the race management on the “London days” are of the highest standard, Rear Commodore House and the Cowes Week Committee have worked tirelessly for many months to prepare and deliver a tremendous Cowes Week programme. Whether you are racing, socialising, partying, or all of these, the Royal London is the place to be and be seen!
The Royal London Ball is traditionally THE event of Cowes Week, held this year on Wednesday 14th August. This stylish event features the best of everything — a glittering Champagne reception, a magnificent buffet, entertainment and, of course, dancing into the small hours to Soul Calibre with a sumptuous breakfast at 0030 to restore one’s energy.
On Friday 16th August, enjoy the Typhoon fighter display from the balcony refreshed by Pimm’s, followed by a spectacular buffet supper before the firework display whilst celebrating with a glass of Champagne.
The past year has seen a huge amount of energy invested by Flag Officers and Members into our wonderful Club, creating ever-improving services and a growing Membership, especially among our under-45 group. We expect demand for the Royal London Cowes Week events to be high this year, and have introduced lower pricing for booking and paying by 25th July. We want to reward early commitment to events, which makes resource and event planning so much more efficient. We are also introducing and encouraging on-line booking for ticketed events via the Royal London website.
On Sunday 18th August join me by sea, land or air for the Commodore’s Rally, where we shall enjoy reflections on Cowes Week with much bonhomie at Fishbourne and the Royal Victoria Yacht Club.
I am proud to be Commodore of this vibrant and important Club, and look forward to seeing you during Cowes Week in the Club House, on the water and, of course, at our fantastic social events.
