OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD

Did you hear one of the great untold stories of the RioOlympics? Katie Ledecky, Lia Neal and Anabelle Smithare some names you have heard on television if youwere watching the Olympics in Rio De Janeiro. These

Olympians have all won medals in the 2016 games, but heyare also united by another common factor: their Catholiceducation. Sacred Heart Schools, founded by the Society ofthe Sacred Heart, boasts of a network of over 145 Catholicschools across the globe that have been teaching for overtwo hundred years. These schools are also responsible forproducing nine Olympic athletes who are competing at Riothis year. Their communications director recentlycommented, “Our athletes recognize that their gifts come fromGod and are not to be wasted. They are taught to takepersonal responsibility for themselves while being self-disciplined in their efforts.” After the first two days ofcompetition, the Sacred Heart Olympians won four medals.Their alumnae are from four different countries and includeKatie, Lia Neal, Anabelle Smith, KK Clark, Mary Jo Fernandez,Gaby Lopez, Gabi Nance, Erin Rafuse and Denise Sheldon. The secret? Sacred Heart Schools focus on instilling fivemain goals in their students: a personal relationship withGod, respect for intellectual values, social awareness andaction, community building, and personal growth. These arefoundational to this year’s Olympians. the best day of theirlives.

Simone Biles, born in 1997 became the Olympicindividual all-around champion. This little dynamo is aCatholic hone-schooler who might have been the victim ofabortion had her birth mother been someone other thanShannon Biles, who suffered from drug and alcohol addictionbut, rather than aborting her baby, surrendered Simone foradoption. Simone got a chance to live and went on tobecome the first woman in history to win three consecutiveworld all-around titles; and she is the most decoratedAmerican female gymnast in World Champion history witha total of fourteen medals, ten of them gold. She lights avotive candle to St. Sebastian (patron of athletes) before allof her meets. She also keeps her rosary with her at all timesand is not afraid to proudly admit it. The story of SimoneBiles is a little shaft of light in a big world of darkness. It isso encouraging to see that, despite everything, little miracleslike this are still happening every day and all over the world. Some people wonder if the sacrifice of Catholic education isworth it these days. What do you think?

WELCOME to our visitors and vacationers who come to St.Gregory Barbarigo for daily or Sunday Mass while visiting theNorth Rockland area or one of the river marinas or parks. WHO TYPICALLY INQUIRES ABOUT RCIA? Those married toCatholics; those visitors who are interested in Catholicism;those who have not gone to church but are looking for a faithexperience; inactive Catholics who wish to return to thechurch; those separated from the sacraments for any reason,(for example, those not married in the church or re-marriedwithout an annulment); active Catholics wishing to increasetheir understanding of the Catholic faith.

FAMILY ROSARY Every last Sunday evening ofthe month at 6:30 in the church for the pasteleven years, families from our parish gather torecite the glorious mysteries of the rosary for

the many intentions that have been recommended to us.Refreshments are served afterwards. Won’t you join us? Youwill not be disappointed. For more information, you may callMichele Agosto ( 786-3128).

GOING INTO THE HOSPITAL? Prior to entering the hospitalfor surgery or a procedure for you or a family member, pleasecall the parish office requesting the sacrament of the anointingof the sick. It would be appropriate to give this blessing atone of the weekday Masses, if a person is capable of attendingso that the community may join their prayers as well.Frequently, families wait too long until the person is in thehospital and restricted from food consumption. Therefore, they’re unable to receive holy viaticum. Make sure thehospital knows you are a member of St. Gregory Barbarigo andthat the chaplain has been invited to visit.

REMEMBERING WHY WE GO TO MASS God asks us to make one day holy, to refocus physically, mentally, andspiritually. We live in a secular world. Going to Mass helps us to see everything from a different perspective, tosee in the depths of our being that God is in charge, to let go of our own agenda because we know that God willinspire us, guide us, and strengthen us for the week ahead.

HAVE DINNER WITH THE PASTOR AND PRINCIPAL Come join us for a cooking exhibition and a fine dining experience presented byparishioner Robert T. Zottoli, executive chef with Flik Hospitality Group on Saturday evening, October 22 at 7:00 PM in the parishgymnasium. At this dinner, Bobby will demonstrate how to develop a menu and walk us through the art of planning and the actualpreparation of a meal event. The carte du jour will feature sweet corn veloute, merguez sausage, porcini mushrooms, steamed sofritoport bun, pickled onion, cucumber, micro cilantro, choice of grilled sirloin of beef or French cut chicken breast, butternut squash andEnglish pea puree, Scandinavian potatoes, lavender flan and vanilla crema, and coffee service. The cost will be $50 per person andyou are welcome to bring your own wine. If there are any proceeds, they will be added to the School Capital Improvement Fund whichwill be used to enhance the physical amenities for the children. This is a wonderful way for adult parishioners and school and religiouseducation parents to meet and dine with each other, get more acquainted and make new friends. Just like in the gospel, many of thefollowers of Jesus were brought together through food. For reservations and tickets, call Linda at the parish office (947-1873) or [email protected].

MEN’S PRAYER GROUP is held on the first Monday of every month at 8:00 in the church. As Catholic men, the HolySpirit is calling us into a deeper experience of prayer. The same Spirit that moved the apostles and disciples of ourLord into action is alive and with us here at SGB and wishes to see the men of this parish open their hearts, mindsand souls to seek a fuller experience of His grace, gifts and guidance in their daily lives. Each month will includea different theme reflecting the interests important to every Catholic man. Please join us on the first Monday of

each month at 8:00 PM. Since it will be Labor Day this month, we will meet on Monday, September 12 instead. “Blessed is the manwho trusts in the Lord, whose hope is in the Lord. He is like a tree planted beside the water that stretches out its roots to the stream: It fears notthe heat when it comes, its leaves stay green; in the year of the drought it shows no distress, but still bears fruit.” Jeremiah 17: 7-8

PARISH PRAYER NETWORK is ready to pray from home, quietly at the adoration chapel, or at one of the prayer groups for the urgentneeds of those who call upon them for help in times of difficulty. When faced with a crisis situation, people need as many prayersas possible. Call Cheryl at 429-4223 or e-mail [email protected]. “If there is something that I can do for another person, then Lord, letme do it now and not defer it; for I shall not pass this way again.”

FALL BLOOD DRIVE conducted by NEW YORK BLOOD SERVICES will be held on Thursday, September 22 from 4:30 PM to9:00 PM in the school gym. Blood donations save lives. The life you save may be your own. The demand for bloodis high. That means we have to get involved. You never know who will be in need of blood, or when the need mayarise. It takes a special person who understands that making a blood donation is a life saving deed. Many in our owncommunity need blood transfusions every day. Donating blood is safe, quick and easy to do.
