OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD

Apriest was being honored at his retirement dinner after25 years in the parish. A leading, local politician, whowas a member of the congregation was chosen to make

the presentation and give a little speech at the dinner. Hewas delayed, so the priest decided to say his own few wordswhile everyone waited for the arrival of the politician. “I gotmy first impression of the parish from the first confession Iheard here. I thought I had been assigned to a terrible place. The very first person who entered my confessional that daytold me he had stolen a television set and, when stopped by thepolice, had almost murdered the officer. He had stolen moneyfrom his parents, embezzled from his place of business, beenimproper with his boss's wife, taken illegal drugs, and stoppedspeaking with his family. I was appalled. But, as the days wenton, I knew that my people were not all like that and I had, indeed, come to a fine parish full good and loving people.”

Just as the priest finished his talk, the politicianarrived full of apologies at being late. He immediately beganto make the presentation and give his talk: “I'll never forgetthe first day our parish priest arrived,” said the politician. “Infact, I had the honor of being the first one to go to him inconfession.” The moral of the story is: Don’t ever be late!

We are so grateful for the ushers and greeters whowelcome at the doors of our church. They have beenworking hard to accommodate the many latecomers at ourMasses and have asked me for assistance so they may servethe entire community better. If you arrive late, the usherswill seat you during the psalm or after the homily, (but neverduring the readings) by way of the side aisles. If yougenerally come to Mass early, we commend you for yourpunctuality and remind you that many of our worshipersarrive after the liturgy has begun! May we ask that you pushinto the pew to allow for the seating of latecomers. This is awonderful gesture of hospitality and does wonders to makethe atmosphere more prayerful. So, thanks for beingunderstanding and prompt. It is a gesture that does not gounnoticed or unappreciated.

Father LaMorte

A THOUGHT Come to Mass early enough not to disrupt.Leave late enough not to insult. Worship reverently enoughnot to distract. And dress proudly enough not to offend.

FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BVM will takeplace on Tuesday, August 15. It is one of theChurch’s Holy Days of Obligation to attend Masswhen Catholic people celebrate the assumption ofthe Blessed Mother into heaven. The liturgy willbe offered here at St. Gregory at 7:00 AM (for

those who must leave early for work), 9:00, and 7:30 PM (forthose returning from work).

PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CHAPEL Many peopleenjoy having quiet time, personal time, with the God they love.Lots of good decisions and renewed commitment come frombeing quiet with Jesus, especially during EUCHARISTIC ADORATION. We invite you to be present for this time while the BlessedSacrament is exposed on our altar. This may prove to be amost peaceful and rewarding hour. If there is anyone whowishes to be a guardian and a partner for EucharisticAdoration, please look at these vacant hours. If you wish to bea substitute for the summer months, we can use yourparticipation as well. Interested? Call 203-253-8565.

BAPTISM SEMINAR Our parish offers a monthlyseminar for those parents awaiting the birth oradoption of a child, or have an infant ready forbaptism. Please call our parish office (947-1873)to make your reservation. The next seminar will

be held on Monday September 11 at 7:30 PM in the Our Ladyof Victory Room beneath the adoration chapel.

WEDDING OF THE SEA NEXT SUNDAY NIGHT at 7:00 PM at thefishing pier at Bowline Point Town Park. This blessing includestraditional prayers with a statue of the Blessed Mother, thedistribution of holy water and a simple reception. TownSupervisor Howard Phillips Jr. and Father will perform thesymbolic tossing of the ceremonial wreath. This ceremonyrepresents the “wedding” of the town and the Hudson Rivercreated by God in proximity to each other and blessed by Hislove and protection. Hope you can join us on next Sunday.

EMBER DAY FOR PEACE For centuries, theChurch kept three days (Wednesday, Friday andSaturday) near the beginning of each season asa time of special penance. Such ember days

echo the meaning and observance of Lent. Local churches andhouseholds may wish to observe these days of fasting, worksof charity and prayers. August 6 and 9 are the anniversaries ofthe atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Fasting andprayers would be a way to express the sorrow of nuclear warand to ponder the possibility of making a peaceful world.

GOING INTO THE HOSPITAL? Prior to entering the hospital for surgery or a procedure for you or a family member, please call theparish office requesting the sacrament of the anointing of the sick. It would be appropriate to give this blessing at one of the weekdayMasses, if a person is capable of attending so that the community may join their prayers as well. Frequently, families wait too longuntil the person is in the hospital and restricted from food consumption. Therefore, they’re unable to receive holy viaticum. ABORTION CHANGES YOU is an outreach movement to help those who have been affected by abortion –whether it's the woman who aborted her child, her partner, her parents, a friend, or other children of thewoman who had an abortion. The website www.abortionchangesyou.com offers support, resources, and help

in dealing with the grief and pain following an abortion. The companion book, Changed, is profoundly moving and offers manypersonal stories. Often we talk about abortion in a purely abstract and theoretical way. But the reality is that there are many hurtingpeople all around us who are ostracized by what has become such a sharply political issue. Bumper stickers and political debates existin the same world as the hurting woman who regrets her decision, the boyfriend who helped or couldn't stop his girlfriend fromaborting their baby, or the child who later learns that he or she will never know a sibling. Each of us could share this book and sitewith those in our lives who have been impacted by abortion, or use them ourselves to rekindle the compassion that made us careabout this issue in the first place. It can also season our discourse on the subject with proper sensitivity. Please visit the web site tohear from men, women, family members and friends who have experienced abortion and find local resources. You can order the bookChanged: Making Sense of Your Own or a Loved One’s Abortion Experience at www.changedbook.com or by calling 877-325-HEAL.

PROTECTING OUR CHILDREN To ensure that our children remain safe and secure, anyone who needs to report an alleged incidentof sexual abuse of a minor by the priest, deacon, religious or lay person serving in the archdiocese is asked to contact Sister EileenClifford (212-371-1011, x2949) or Deacon George J. Coppola (917-861-1762). Both may also be reached at [email protected] www.archny.org. This website also has valuable information on the Archdiocesan SAFE ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM as well as tips forparents. In keeping with the archdiocesan policy regarding sexual abuse, we provide this information to assure that all, especiallyour children, are safe and secure.

BRITNEY SPEARS CONCERT CANCELLED Unfortunately, our efforts to get pop sensation Britney Spears to performa benefit fund raiser for the parish have proven unsuccessful. Her calendar is full. Therefore, those who have beenarriving at Mass every Sunday dressed for a Britney Spears concert should know that they don't have to do thatanymore. Modest church-going attire will do nicely. We will notify you if the situation changes.
