LETTER FROM THE “A”: STATE OF THE CHAPTER Brothers,

The state of the LSU Chapter is strong. After an eventful spring, we wrapped up the semester with a GPA on the incline (we ranked 4th among IFC fraternities), the house at maximum capacity, and an eagerness to take on the upcoming fall recruitment process. The spring semester saw an increase in overall chapter programming – we had more

brotherhood, scholarship and social events than previous semesters, in addition to a multitude of Executive Board, chair and ABT meetings. We held a successful formal in Gulfport, Mississippi alongside the Mississippi State Chapter in March, and we were pleased to host alumni at the house for our annual spring alumni crawfish boil in April. Over the summer, an intensive recruitment schedule is planned. With the assistance from and experience of several alumni, we are confident and prepared for the formal recruitment process in late August. Looking toward the fall, the house will be at maximum capacity for its first time – a major milestone for both the chapter and the Housing Corp. In the coming months, the chapter hopes to launch a rigorous housing drive for house renovations and repairs in an effort to maintain this capacity. Additionally, the Alumni seeking more alumni to

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: GRANT HERRIN (’07)

GRANT THOMAS HERRIN, L.S.U. '07, is an associate attorney with the Ezell Law Firm in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, specializing in administrative and regulatory law. Brother Herrin received his Bachelor of the Arts (B.A.) in History from Louisiana State University and A&M College in 2007, a Graduate Gemologist (G.G.) diploma & Accredited Jewelry Professional (A.J.P.) certification from the Gemological Institute of America in Carlsbad, California, in 2008, and the degree of Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Southern University Law Center in

2013. Brother Herrin is a Founding Father of the L.S.U. Chapter and previously served the Chapter as "A," "D," IFC Representative, and member of the Greek Board of Directors. He has also served Delta Chi as a Student Member of the International Housing Committee and as Regent of Region III '09-'11. Currently he serves as the .S.U. Chapter as "BB" and Region III as a Vice Regent. In his spare time, Brother Herrin is an avid homebrewer and member of Brasseurs à la Maison club of Baton Rouge.

THE PHYSICAL FOUNDATION OF DELTA CHI

BY JON KLOOR, “E” As I drove home from work one evening, I began to ponder the chapter’s progress in all aspects. However, aspects that would not leave my mind were all the houses we once lived in and bonded in. When I look back and view the history of the LSU Chapter of Delta Chi, I begin to see the signs of true progress. We were, at our peak, in one of the largest houses on campus with impressive annual pledge class sizes. Then we ran into some difficulties and found ourselves without a house on campus for some period of time. Yet we still managed to survive these troubling times and are on the right track to reclaiming our impressive presence on this campus. Today, we occupy some of the best property on campus with regard to location. The inside of the house has had a tremendous amount of work put into it by multiple brothers. I was so impressed with the amount of work being done that I decided to move into the house this upcoming fall. Now, this does not mean that the house is neither in perfect shape nor in any need of attention. A brief example of the need for work is actually in the room I plan to occupy. My room was one that was kept closed at all times. There was no one living in the room and nobody dared to walk into the room. Nothing was appealing about this room with its AGR green trim, dismal wall color, and the carpet that had seen better days.

However, I decided that it was time to change the appearance of that room and began to work on this space with the intention of making it one of the nicest in the house. With the help of my father and my pledge brothers, I began by painting the walls and ripping up the carpet. Afterwards I replaced the carpet with solid hardwood floors that I had gotten courtesy of a pledge brother who had also installed it in his room in the fraternity house. Once

the floors were laid down and the trim was in place, multiple actives, alumni, and even visitors were thoroughly impressed. This room was once ignored but now attracts quite a bit of attention. This is analogous to the physical state of the chapter. We were once underrated on campus but with determination, resources, effort, and support we can rightfully reclaim our position on campus. As in all aspects of life, we need people to

believe in us, support us, challenge us, and most importantly help us. My parable about the room could never have had the outcome I desired if I did not have people believing, challenging, supporting, and obviously helping. Restoring a chapter is not a one-man operation. It needs an entire community. What better community to look towards than family? My brothers are my family and I wholeheartedly believe that together we can achieve anything.
