Looking back at the term
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful and
dedicated staff, students and community for another fantastic term
at Punchbowl Public School. It was a term of rich learning
opportunities and continued engagement with our parents and the
local community.
High quality teaching and learning remained the focus of
professional learning for teachers this term and opportunities for
our teachers to plan and teach together is supporting consistent
practices across the school. Assessment for learning continues to
be a strong focus, with teachers using a variety of methods to
assess student performance and adjust programs and learning
spaces to meet student need. Learning was also supported
outside the classroom this term with excursions to Riverwood
Park, a Photoshop session at Sir Joseph Banks HS, participation
in the BYDS program, the Joey’s Cup, Survivor Skills workshops
and the ‘Stamp Out Bullying’ show.
As always, a high priority was placed on parent engagement and
we welcomed parents into the school through working bees,
information sessions, workshops in the SaCC, parent excursions
to historically relevant places and the End of Ramadan
Community Lunch. P&C meetings were also well received this
term and many ideas have been presented for future fundraising
and community events.
We also continued our strong partnerships with local schools by
working with Sir Joseph Banks HS, Punchbowl Boys HS and local
primary schools to share ideas and develop programs to meet the
interests and needs of our students. We also established a
relationship with Belmore Boys HS, with a group of students
recently attending a gardening workshop. We look forward to
seeing their skills transferred to our new garden area outside the
office!
Staffing News
I would like to acknowledge staff who are moving on from the school at the end of the term. Mrs
Doolan in the office will be leaving us to take up a position at East Hills Boys HS.
Mrs Wax is also moving on at the end of the term, having received a transfer to Middleton
Grange PS. I would like to thank both of these staff members for their dedication to the school
over a long period of time and wish them every success for the future.
Mrs Christodoulou is also going on maternity leave at the end of the term. We wish her and her
family all the best at this very exciting time and look forward to her returning to the school in
future.
I would also like to recognise the work of Mr El Hage and Mrs McGeary as the Relieving Deputy
Principals this term. Both Mr El Hage and Mrs McGeary have brought a great deal of experience
to their positions and their work ethic and dedication has been of great support to myself and the
executive team. I am pleased to say that they will both continue in their roles until the end of
2018.
I am also pleased to advise that 2 teacher positions and 2 Assistant Principal positions will be
advertised at the school during next term. This will allow us to replenish staff who have left the
school and will assist with our stability by bringing permanent staff members into the school. I
will ensure that the community remains informed through these processes.
Other staffing information
Mr Noshie will continue as the Relieving Assistant Principal for Stage 3 (Yrs 5 and 6) for next
term.
Miss Sutcliffe will continue as the Relieving Assistant Principal for Kindergarten for next term.
Miss Vassallo will remain the Relieving Assistant Principal for Stage 2 (Yrs 3 and 4) for next
term.
Mrs O’Donoghue will return to work 5 days per week next term. She will be the full time teacher
on 2CO with Mrs Christodoulou going on maternity leave.
Additional SLSO staff will be employed across the school and utilised in classrooms to support
students with identified needs.
All other staff will remain in their current positions to commence Term 3. Changes may occur
later in the term once the new positions are advertised and filled. I will keep the community
informed of all changes.
Have a wonderful and safe holiday break. We look forward to seeing our students return to
school on Tuesday 24th July.
Mr C. Smyth-Gapps
Acting Principal
Wishing you a relaxing and safe school holidays.

The preschool have enjoyed the visual arts activities this term. The students
have had a variety of different experiences using
different materials. The best voted activity was
making slime. The children were actively engaged in
the making of the slime and enjoyed playing with it.
Maybe this could be a great school holiday activity.

Early One
Kindergarten students have been working
really hard this term to learn how to play
respectfully in the playground. They have been
developing problem solving strategies.
Shadrack found a worm on the field and wanted to share his discovery with his
friends.
The playgroup children and
parents have learnt lots of
new songs and rhymes this
term and enjoyed dancing
and moving to the music.
Eve, a Speech Pathologist from
Canterbury Community Health,
visited our playgroup to talk to
parents about the importance
of reading to their children. She
also shared lots of ideas to
make reading interesting and
fun.
The homework group has been well
attended this term. The children
have benefited from the extra help
and time to complete their
homework. Thank you to the tutors
from University of Western Sydney,
who volunteered their time to
support the homework group.
Group A (Monday- Wednesday) Classes were very excited to meet a “Rainbow Lorikeet” who flew into
our playground and landed on Rehan’s head. The children and teachers were very excited to meet the
Lorikeet and gave it some fruit, seeds and biscuit to eat, along with some water. It was very friendly and it
enjoyed watching the children.
We followed the children’s interests to explore birds. Children asked lots of questions about birds and
were very involved in their learning.
We continued to research and look for different types of birds in our playground.
Miss Georgiou brought in her pet Ringneck parrot for us to meet. We got to learn about taking care
of pet parrots.
We borrowed books from the library to research different types of birds.
Children looked closely at the bird features to draw and paint them and to
create 3D birds to display in our classrooms.
We listened to the story “Feather for Phoebe” by Rod Clement.
Here are some of the children’s comments about the story
Rawan: Phoebe wanted a tail and wings, because she doesn’t like being grey. She
doesn’t like being small.
Shehzad: Phoebe did not want to be small and grey. He can fly into the air. He
wants to be colourful and big. He fell and found another Phoebe friend.
Aroush: Phoebe was small and he wants to be big. Phoebe wants
feathers. Then he fell down and the feathers fell down and Phoebe
found a friend.
Maria: Phoebe was grey and little. She wants to be colourful. She
put feathers on. She needs wings. The feathers went out because
she fell out of the tree. She found a best friend like her.
Year 2 Excursion to Elizabeth Farm
On Friday the 25th of May we went to Elizabeth Farm. At Elizabeth Farm we were learning about the past. People didn’t have i-pads, i-pods or phones to play with. They played outside with hoops and sticks and skittles, which is like bowling. Elizabeth Farm didn’t have fancy toilets. They had pots to go in unlike us. We are so lucky that we have toilets that flush. In the past the owner of Elizabeth Farm had a bell in each room to call her servants when she needed help. We saw a feather and you put it in ink so people can write letters. In the present we have pens and pencils to write with.

Coding students are continuing
their learning journey with
MakeyMakey. Students discuss,
explore, try, make mistakes, retry,
retry, retry and finally succeed. They are building
valuable life skills along with their knowledge of
Coding. Students are thoroughly enjoying the
opportunity and are asking for more time to Code,
this can only be expressed as AWESOME LEARNING!
We are very excited to be establishing our school garden with the help of Panania Free Rangers, a
local organisation who are assisting our school in the planning and development of our newest
learning space. This area will be home to our edible garden and staff and students will be able to
use this space in a variety of different ways. Stay tuned for more updates as they happen.
If there are any parents who are available to assist us in our garden project please see Mrs
Kontakos.
The Punchbowl Voices are ‘On Air’ every lunchtime during eating time with the latest news and information. The PBL focus
for the week is discussed and students celebrating their birthdays are also acknowledged. Our student leaders have done a fabulous job this term and we are looking forward to
Consistent with our school vision to build
independent, innovative and resilient learners,
our students are building on their Arabic
language skills using the available tools offered
through technology. They are using online
translation tools to find the meaning of new
vocabulary. Students are required to type in
the vocabulary in Arabic (a task requiring
several skills that have been built up
throughout this semester), listen to the
correct pronunciation of words and post this
information to the Google Classroom shared
by class members. This way of learning allows
students to accept greater responsibility for
their learning, work at their own pace and
remain engaged throughout the lesson.
Students have also enjoyed recording
themselves reading the words and uploading
the audio file to Google Classroom. Overall, it
has been an enjoyable experience for all
students.
Capitalising on the limited time we
have teaching Community Language
(Culture being one of the
components of the Arabic Syllabus),
our S1 students are enjoying morning
fitness and the cultural favourite
“Dabke” dance.
Stage 1 students have been learning about
“Change”. They have explored this idea
through food, specifically the effects of
heating or cooling on spaghetti, chocolate
and popcorn. Using Arabic to understand
these concepts has meant better
engagement in learning Arabic.
All students from Kindergarten to Year 6 are encouraged to
participate in the Premier’s Reading Challenge. More
information can be obtained from Mrs Kelly in the library.

activities to participate in
