In the past few years, you could vir-tually count on Genoa winning football championships in the Northern Buckeye Conference and Northwood doing the same in the Toledo Area Athletic Conference. This year, there could be new champi-ons. Granted, Northwood is picked to win the TAAC, but enter always-tough Tiffi n Calvert, resurging Gibsonburg and Cardinal Stritch Catholic programs, and of course you never know about the rest. To take everyone in the league down this year, veteran coach Ken James says his team will have to run past them. Fast and small. That’s how James de-scribes the 2014 Rangers, who have been in the state playoffs seven straight years and are seeking their seventh Toledo Area Athletic Conference title in eight years. Northwood returns eight starters on both offense and defense and has 55 play-ers on its roster. “The chemistry has been real good,” James said. “We’re pretty fast on the edge, but we’re small. Most of our perimeter guys are pretty darn small, from 140-160 pounds. We have guys who can run well and we have to do things to allow them to use their speed. We’re going to have to be more diverse to take advantage of what we have and try to hide the size we don’t have.” Even Stritch cannot be counted out, as the Cardinals return a ton of athletic ability. “Our senior leadership right now is pretty good,” second-year coach Brian Wical said. “We thought last year that the junior class, this year’s seniors, were some of the best leaders on the team. We’re anx-ious after last year to get to this football sea-son to see if what we thought about these guys is true. In the NBC, you can still count Genoa in or at the top, but you can also count on Eastwood, Rossford, and Lake to be con-tenders. Enter brand-new Genoa coach Paul Patterson, who takes over the reins of a championship program which was forged by the likes of former coaches Mike Vicars (2007-11) and Tim Spiess (2012-13). Patterson certainly comes in with the right pedigree for the job, having not only served as receivers and defensive backs coach under Spiess during Genoa’s 10-1 sea-son a year ago, but also toting a resume that includes experience in the Ohio high school football coaching ranks dating back to 1994. “The NBC will be very competitive this year,” forecasts Coach Patterson. “Lake returns a number of exciting skilled ath-letes, and are very well coached by Coach (Mark) Emans. At Eastwood, Coach (Jerry) Rutherford will have his team ready play every week. Rossford looks to continue to build their program under Coach (Todd) Drusback. Otsego and Elmwood look to im-prove on last year’s record. Woodmore is un-der new leadership in Coach Brian Spicer. And Derek Kidwell returns to his alma ma-ter to build up the Fostoria program.” The athletes at Lake that Patterson talks about includes quarterback Jared Rettig.Last year, Rettig completed 138 of 212 pass attempts in 2013 for 2,347 yards, 31 touchdowns with just six interceptions. “He’s got that professional mental-ity,” Emans said. “He comes into practice

Championships up for grabs?

every day, and does all of the little things right. Jared just wants to see our team be successful, and he’s never really been a real big personal stats guy. So, I think in the big picture, his stats will come, and his success will continue to take care of itself.” Meanwhile, waiting in the wings be-hind Rettig is one who also shares the same last name in little brother Jake, a 5-11, 204 pound sophomore who led both the fresh-man and junior varsity squads a year ago. “Jake has just done a nice job for us,” says Emans, “and again, we’ve built our of-fense around his older brother Jared, obvi-ously. But, when Jared leaves after his se-nior year, we don’t want to have to change our whole offense up again. And that’s the nice thing about having Jake on our team. He can step up for us at any time, and run the same kinds of things Jared runs.” At Clay, a senior class left that fi nished off a 2-8 season a year ago, but it was a sea-son that could have just have been easily been 8-2 with close last minute losses to several opponents. This year, second year coach Mike Lee will have to start new. “We’re inexperienced and we know everything is moving forward,” Lee said. “We’re going to be playing a lot of juniors and sophomores, and the seniors are inexpe-rienced. These kids haven’t won, and we’re trying to change that attitude. This group has really bought in. I’m proud of them.” (Writers Jeffrey D. Coach: Brian Wical, second year, 0-10Last year: 0-10 (0-7 TAAC).Forecast: Sometimes it’s all about poten-tial, and Wical and his staff saw it in a big group of the Cardinals’ players last year. Seven starters return on offense and eight on defense from that squad.

“They’ve bought into our system, and we couldn’t ask for a better group of guys to bounce back after an 0-10 season,” Wical said.

The roster has just 33 players, but that’s one-third of the school’s enrollment of 101 boys. Wical said the 2014 Cardinals

are determined to make Car-dinal Stritch Catholic football respectable again.

“Not only are those (15 starters) back this year, but they were returning starters last year,” Wical said. “Eighty percent of that senior class

are three-year varsity starters now, and it’s time for those guys to show the hard work they’ve put in and show that leadership ability and show that we can compete and get better.”

Last year’s Stritch offense was, in Wical’s words, “all over the place,” using a hybrid wing-T and I-formation approach. The Cardinals have moved to the spread of-fense this season.

“We’ve got really good athletes on the edge,” Wical said. “Our linemen fi t the spread offense. They’re not very big, but they’re quick. By spreading out the de-fense, it give us less guys in the box for our guys to go one-on-one against. We have a pretty smart, athletic quarterback and run-ning back, and when we spread out the defense that can give us some pretty good running lanes.”

Wical said the players have bought into the new approach.

“I think they’re having more fun on of-fense because it gives more guys a chance to touch the football,” he said. “Everybody playing for us offensively likes that they can get the ball on any given play.”

Joe Sinay, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound senior, returns at quarterback after starting under center for a couple games early last season. Stritch ended up using three quarterbacks last year. Sinay ran for 268 yards last year and threw for 86.

“Joe is one of our best athletes and we moved him all around the fi eld in order to get him the ball,” Wical said. “He’s a big kid and a mature kid for his age. He’s fast and has the ability to learn. I don’t know that he’s a natural quarterback, but he’s a natural athlete who wants to do the best he can do. He’s a coach on the fi eld.”

Senior James Dobson will start at run-ning back. Wical called Dobson “the most athletically gifted player on the football fi eld. He has done a tremendous job getting ready for the season and being that No. 1 back we need him to be.”

Junior Kevin Hohenberger, who last played as a freshman, will also line up in the backfi eld. The top receiver is senior Chris Blazevich, who emerged as the Car-dinals’ No. 1 option last year and had more than 500 receiving yards and fi ve touch-downs in only fi ve games.

“We want to get him the ball out in space,” Wical said.

Another receiver will be senior Austin Wlodarz, who has started at running back and linebacker.

“He won our Leadership Award last year and is our best natural leader,” Wical said. “He’s done a tremendous job trying to convert from running back to wide receiv-er. He never takes a play off.”

Senior guard Ricky Pratt and senior

center Seth Kebker both played running back last season and have settled in on the offensive line. Junior left tackle Bryce Ritzler returns after starting all 10 games a year ago.

“Ricky and Seth are the two best block-ers on our team, regardless of position,” Wical said. “When they heard we were going to the spread, they saw the writing on the wall that they weren’t going to get much skill-position time. They came to me and said they would be better as linemen. They really want to put the team before themselves.”

The Cardinals are also switching up defenses, moving from last year’s 3-3 align-ment to a 4-3 look this season.

“We had a really tough time playing with three down linemen and stopping the interior run,” Wical said. “We wanted to get another down lineman in the game.”

Dobson, who had 109 tackles last year to lead the team, has been moved from out-side linebacker to strong safety. Pratt moves from linebacker to tackle, while the other D-linemen consist of senior tackle Lorenzo Garcia and ends Adam Bruckner, a junior, and Ritzler.

All three starting interior linebackers — Wlodarz, Sinay and Kebker — return, as do senior cornerbacks Blazevich and Bobby Romstadt and junior safety Grant Curavo.

Coach: Mike Lee, second year, 2-8.Last year: 2-8 (0-7 TRAC).Preview: Mike Lee’s coaching history shows that in no way, shape or form is he used to 2-8 seasons, but that’s what Clay suffered through last fall.

Lee’s second Eagles squad returns just four starters on offense and three on de-fense, so the coach is preaching patience with a team that was picked to fi nish last in the rugged Three Rivers Athletic Confer-ence.

“I’m hoping people are patient with these young men,” Lee said. “We’re mea-suring their day-to-day progress and where

they are at the end of the year, and not the wins or losses. It is a project we have in place that we are building for the future. It could be as soon as next year, but we’re just not

there yet. We are working to get there. If this group gets there, I’ll be a happy man. They deserve it.”

The Eagles are better trying to utilize their talent by switching from last year’s spread offense to a wing-T offense, which favors a strong running game and misdirec-tion. Several area teams, such as Genoa and Eastwood, have had great success with the wing-T in recent years.

“I have not run it, but I know it inside and out from defending it,” Lee said. “Larry Folley, my offensive coordinator, has had it in the past. He played it and coached it back in his days at Elyria West. I’ve always admired the wing-T offense. It’s very diffi -cult to stop. We did a camp with (Eastwood coach) Jerry Rutherford and he has been very helpful.”

Sophomore quarterback Josh Kiss will direct the offense. Kiss started on Clay’s freshman team a year ago.

“Josh is a very athletic, competitive young player,” Lee said. “He’s picking it up very well. He’s very intelligent and he’s go-ing to get better with time.”

Clay’s tailback will be senior Aaron Seymour and the wingbacks are seniors Ryan Fournier and Tyler Mildenberger. Nick Steveson, Grant Wend and Jaret Whitt will also split time. Fournier ran for 559 yards and six touchdowns last year.

“Seymour is the downhill runner and

Clay Eagles (Photo courtesy of Woodard Photographic by Lifetouch)

gave us a lot of stuff in the power game last year,” Lee said. “Fournier and Mildenberg-er are the perimeter-type runners and will stick their nose up in there when needed. They all went to camp, learned (the wing-T) and have really taken hold of what they learned.”

When the Eagles throw the ball their main targets will be Mildenberger, Sey-mour and junior Lorenzo LeVally, who will also line up at tight end with seniors Blaze Okey and Dalton Dudley.

Senior center Joe Kiss, Josh’s brother, is one of two returning starters on the offen-sive line and the only player who had sewn up a starting nod through Aug. 19.

“He’s a great leader, very smart, and he just works until he gets the job done,” Lee said. “We’ll have a brother tandem at center and quarterback.”

Injuries made things diffi cult to shore up the rest of the line during the preseason, but Lee said all of the O-linemen are com-peting, “which is a good thing.”

The rest of the line, which has good size, will consist of a combination of the following players: junior guards Trenton Gast, Josh Harrison, Alec Kulwicki and Aaron Faneuff, senior guard Tyler Koester, junior tackles Brock Belinske, Austin Ko-chanski and Sean Pecina, and senior tackle Jake Davis, who started last year.

The defensive line includes tackles Koester, Kochanski, junior Matt Stencel, Kulwicki and sophomore Christian White; Okey, Pecina, Gast or Koester at end; and senior nose guard Marcello McGorty.

Seymour and sophomore Mickey Wiseman will start at linebacker, with ju-nior Eric Kovacs and senior Izaac Bonilla also seeing playing time. The secondary consists of cornerbacks Fournier, LeV-ally, Whitt and junior Stevie Nguyen, with Wend, Mildenberger or sophomores Mason Baker or Kevin Curry playing the safety po-sition.

Lee said the Eagles getting picked to fi nish last in the TRAC was “justifi able,” for now.

“We don’t have a whole lot coming back,” he said.

Those sophomores are now seniors, and Eastwood is coming off a season in which it fi nished second in the Northern Buckeye Conference and reached the Di-vision V playoffs, losing to sixth-ranked and defending state champion Coldwater, which went on to win the 2013 title.

“We’ve got a lot of seniors who have played a lot of football for us,” Rutherford said. “I really thought a year ago that that was the best summer we’ve

ever had. This summer was better. We have good numbers. They’re here every day and, to top it off, they’re a pretty talented group. These are great athletes, not just good football players. Some of these guys have played since they were sophomores and we’re hoping it all comes together for us.”

Eastwood returns 16 starters but lost three-year starting quarterback Jake Schmeltz to graduation. The new starter is senior Grant Geiser, who formerly played halfback in the Eagles’ wing-T offense.

“He was kind of the next guy in line,” Rutherford said. “He is an intelligent guy and a tough kid. He’s worked really hard on throwing. That’s not really our thing, but he’s worked hard at it. He can run the football. He’s also an all-league linebacker and was our leading tackler the last two years. He will still play linebacker and re-turn kickoffs and punts.”

Rutherford said the Eagles’ backfi eld is “fast,” and the offensive line returns fi ve seniors who have started or contributed over the years.

“Two of them started on the offen-sive line last year and two started on the defensive line,” Rutherford said. “Those guys have played for us and played in big games. Now is their time, and they’re a good group.”

Seifert. Snowden rushed for 1,174 yards and 18 touchdowns last year. Those two will be joined by junior Eli Brown, a stand-out baseball player and wrestler.

“He was our jayvee running back last year and would come in at the end of (var-sity) games,” Rutherford said. “He’ll be the right halfback. He’s done a good job. Snowden, Seifert and Geiser are going to have big years. We’ll have Seifert outside and Snowden inside, and it wouldn’t sur-prise me if Eli didn’t have some big games, too.”

The tight ends are juniors Jonathan Bowlus and Chris Orcutt, and the split ends are seniors Abram Reyes, Tim Hood-lebrink and Noah Smith, none of whom caught a pass last season. Hoodlebrink took second at the Division II state track meet in the 800-meter run last spring.

Senior tackles Jack Heckman and Lu-cas Friess will be joined on the line by se-nior guards Tyler McCrory and Caleb Tus-sing. Senior Jason Fertig lettered at center last season, with Friess and Tussing both earning All-NBC honors on the defensive line last season. Heckman and Orcutt also lettered as defensive linemen.

Geiser, who has 21 career starts at in-side linebacker, will be joined there by McCrory, who started halfway through last season.

Eastwood returns 16 starters, expects to contend

“Geiser has great instincts,” Rutherford said. “He gets to the football and is a hard-nosed guy, and obviously he can run.”

The outside linebackers are Seifert and junior Andrew Caris, who came out for football for the fi rst time. Hoodlebrink and Smith will start at cornerback while Snowden, with 21 career starts, returns at free safety.

“They can all run to the ball,” Ruther-ford said. “We’re pretty excited about it.”

The Eagles open the season with Start and then play three straight on the road, against Clyde, Oak Harbor and Woodmore.

“We’ll fi nd out right away how good we are,” Rutherford said. “Start has a nice team. When we go to Clyde, we’ll know for sure how good we are. We’ll know by week two where things stand.”

Coach: Paul Patterson, fi rst year Last Year: 10-1 (7-0 NBC) Preview: Sixteen returning letter winners, eight returning starters are stepping into some mighty-big shoes left vacant by the recent graduations if the maroon-and-gray wants to fi nd itself back atop the Northern Buckeye Conference heap and in the state playoff picture for the eighth year in a row. But, hey...no pressure, guys. Enter Patterson, who served as receiv-ers and defensive backs coach under Tim Spiess during Genoa’s 10-1 season a year ago. “The ’14 Genoa Comets will look to accept the challenge of continuing the success of the football program in the last

seven years,” says Pat-terson. “We will contin-ue to play physical on both sides of the ball,” he adds, “and we will

need a number of athletes to step up into larger roles than they have had in the past. The players have worked extremely hard in practice so far, and that will need to con-tinue for us to be successful.” “I think it will be diffi cult to continue the success of this program,” continues Coach Patterson, “but our young men at Genoa looked poised to reach their goals.” It has to be a comfort for Patterson to still have a guy like Cody Pickard as the 5-10 senior weapon can help the Comets score points with his golden toe. Last year, Pickard was a fi rst team All-NBC specialist, fi rst team all-District kicker, and fi rst team All-Ohio kicker. In the backfi eld, Pickard joins senior Jake Wojciechowski (671 rushing yards, 10 TDs), hard-nosed senior Nick Wolfe, 5-9 senior Andrew Belcik, and explosive 5-9 sophomore Donte McClure. That backfi eld should be steady, which is good news for Patterson’s new starting quarterback, senior Kyle Edwards, who by no means is a “rookie.” Edwards backed up and learned from 2013 starter Logan Scott (1,341 yards passing, 11 TDs), now gradu-ated, and Patterson says he is ready for the transition. “Kyle played sparingly last year be-hind Logan,” offers Patterson, “but he is poised to take over the reigns this year. He

did start a number of games as a sophomore when Logan was injured, and he is an ef-fective runner and passer. Kyle has done a great job so far leading our offense through camp and two-a-days.” Add big target in 6-4 senior tight end Noah Goodrich to the equation, along with 6-1 senior wide receiver Matt Aumiller (the pair will need to absorb some of the produc-tion lost to the graduation of standout tight end Quentin Spiess, who fi nished 2013 with 647 receiving yards), and the Comet offense could put up big numbers again. The true heart of this emerging offense is the offensive line. “The offensive line is the most expe-rienced group,” Patterson says, “returning three starters from last year. Tyler Baird (second team All-NBC, second team all-dis-trict) returns at center, while Blake Traver (fi rst team All-NBC) and Jay Nino return at the guard positions. Joe McLear (6-0 ju-nior), Louis Cutchall (6-2 senior), and Matt Herrick (5-9 sophomore) will play tackle for us this season.” The only question is who will step up and become the leader of this heralded unit, like big Michael Deiter, (now playing football at the University of Wisconsin) did for so many years? On the other side of the football, look

for a tough and talented linebacking corps led by Wojciechowski and Wolfe on the out-side, and Nino (second team All-NBC), Trav-er, and Baird in the middle, to be the linch-pins of this multiple 3-4 Genoa defense. Up front, the Comet “D” is fortifi ed with run-stuffers in the form of McLear, Herrick, Cutchall, and scrappy 5-10 senior Kyle Rozek, while the secondary will fea-ture a veteran group rounded out by Pick-ard, a second team All-NBC defensive back a year ago) Belcik, Edwards, and up-and-coming sophomore McLure. Pickard will also handle the Comets’ kickoff duties and punting, and will join a platoon of return men in Wojciechowski, Belcik, and McLure to make up for the loss of Casey Gose to graduation.

Despite changes, Genoa expects to be in the mix

Coach: Steve Reser, fi fth year, 14-26Last year: 5-5 (4-3, TAAC)Preview: Reser and his staff are a lot more comfortable now that they have been able to coach an entire class from their freshman through senior years.

The players no longer ask, “Why are we doing it this way?” or “We didn’t do this last year.” Things are stable now.

“It’s fun to see kids mature and know what we expect out of them as individuals and as a team,” Reser said.

The Golden Bears return 17 lettermen and six starters on offense and fi ve on de-

fense. They were picked to fi nish third behind Northwood and new To-ledo Area Athletic Con-ference member Tiffi n Calvert in the TAAC this season.

“I expect us to keep being competitive in the fourth quarter with the best teams in the league,” Reser said. “If they work hard they can achieve some things at Gibsonburg that haven’t been done in a while. If they stay focused we can do some good things this year. I think we have a nice football team. They’ve worked their tails off and they deserve some success.”

Quarterback Matt Tille returns for his fourth year as a starter, after missing sever-al games last season with a knee injury. He played with a brace the last half of the sea-son and completed 51 percent of his passes for 1,658 yards and 24 touchdowns in the Bears’ spread offense.

“He did a nice job managing the of-fense and throwing to his receivers,” Reser said. “He’s running faster in the 40 and he’s a hard worker and ready to go. He has a good understanding of what I expect out of him as a quarterback.”

Most of last year’s backfi eld returns, in-cluding junior running backs Josh Dyer and seniors A.J. Blausey and Troy Ickes. Dyer rushed for 247 yards and three touchdowns on 86 carries last year.

“Troy might get a little more time this year as things develop,” Reser said. “We run 60 percent of the time and throw 40 percent of the time. They’re all playing for more time, and they have earned time.”

The receiving corps is led by four-year

starter Derek Angelone, who caught 36 pass-es for 593 yards and four TDs last season.

“Derek is the guy we’re going to be throwing the ball to,” Reser said. “He’s got-ta be our guy.”

Marcus Tille, Eric Jahna, Alex Vargo, Griffi n Geary, Mateo Flores and Zack Kaet-zel are all in the mix at wideout.

“We have seven players we’re working in,” Reser said. “We’re seeing more com-petitiveness in practice, with two and three guys in spots who are pushing each other, which is nice.”

The three certain starters on the offen-sive line are left tackle and four-year start-er Tyler Hovis, junior right tackle Skyler Shively and junior right guard Billy Ruth. Sophomore Trent Hovis will play center or left guard, while sophomores Brian Milton and Ian Taylor, senior Julian Arriaga and junior Jacob Blausey are all competing for playing time.

“They are starting to show they can play,” Reser said. “We like to play a lot of guys.”

The defensive line includes Arriaga at one end, senior returning starter Brandon Campbell (6-1, 310) at tackle, Shively or Hovis at nose guard and Jacob Blausey or senior A.J. Blausey at the other end. Bryce Wright. Marcus Kreais and Ruth can all

play tackle or nose guard.Hovis and Dyer both return at inside

linebacker, where they are three-year start-ers. Hovis was second on the team in tackles last season, with 100, and Dyer added 97.

“Both of them like to play football and like to play linebacker,” Reser said. “I hope they can do what I think they can do. They read the line very well, read their keys and react quickly and they get there somehow.”

Sophomores Brian Milton and Alex Richards could play inside, while the out-side linebackers are sophomore Ryan Clark and senior Alex Vargo. Angelone and ju-nior Zack Kaetzel are also in the mix at out-side ‘backer.

The secondary consists of juniors Mar-cus Tille and Mateo Flores at corner and Ickes at safety. Erik Jahna and Arriaga can also play corner, and Jahna or Angelone can play safety.

Reser said he would be thrilled if this team can get the program over the hump and post a winning record. The Bears have gone 5-5, 4-6 and 5-5 the last three years.

“I want to see it happen for the kids and the community,” Reser said. “I want to see smiles on their faces, to see them happy after we yell at them all day for four months in the offseason in the weight room. I hope to see them have success this year.”

his arm and his legs. Rettig completed 138 of 212 pass at-tempts in 2013 for 2,347 yards, 31 touch-downs with just six interceptions. How-ever, Emans says he doesn't believe Rettig will succumb to overly high expectations this year. “I don’t think Jared has to worry about topping last year,” offers Coach Emans, “but instead, he’s just got to do what we ask him to do, and that’s to run our offense, and to make plays for us. Jared’s a very, very humble kid anyway, and if we run the ball fi ve times in a row, or throw the ball fi ve times in a row, he doesn’t care. He’s just a total team player. For the past couple seasons, Rettig has had two consistent pass catchers in 6-foot-2, 196 pound senior receiver Todd Walters and running mate Adam Duncan, a 5-10, 193 junior. Last year, Walters hauled in 39 receptions, for 799 yards and 13 touch-downs, the latter of which was a school re-cord, and Duncan notched 51 catches for a Lake-record 958 yards, and 11 scores. When one adds 5-11, 180 senior re-ceiver Connor Bowen, who was away from football for a couple of years, along with 6-1, 188 senior Zac Greenlese and 6-3, 159lb senior Jason Parker, Rettig has plenty of solid targets. Still, Lake certainly isn’t one-dimen-

sional on the offensive side of the ball. This all starts, of course, with 5-10, 204 running back Branden Short, a multi-dimensional back who played only part-time last season, but who piled up 896 yards on 118 carries, for a 7.6-yard average and 11 touchdowns.Look for the junior to line up as the Flyers’ feature back this year, possibly with new-comer Blake Osborn, a 5-11, 179 freshman. Making this work will be a returning of-fensive line that returns four of fi ve starters. “That, in itself, makes life easier for us, when you have guys coming back with all of that experience,” says Emans. “It all starts in the middle, with our (6-0, 225) se-nior center, Andrew Abbey, and our guards who line up beside him, (5-10, 201) senior Lukas Lombardo, and (6-0, 200) senior Aus-tin Hess. And when you put Chris Strock, a (6-0, 253) junior tackle out there, as well, you have a nice driving force behind our offense.” “This group is smart,” he continues, “they’re a bunch of big muscleheads who spend a lot of time in the weightroom to-gether, so they’re strong. Some of them have taken off some weight, which has allowed them to become quicker, and more athletic. And they know JR and our playmakers are going to get all the ink, but they also know the offensive line is going to lead this of-fense. They accept that. They’re pleased

with it.” Lake’s 4-3 defense starts with defen-sive ends Hess and 5-10, 201 senior Collin Lloyd. They are joined by defensive tackle Lombardo and a linebacking corps featuring Short, 5-8, 196 junior Nick DeLauter, both returnees, 5-10, 157 senior Austin Ruess and 6-2, 210 junior Drayton Williams. Last year, Short led the team with 74 tackles. In the secondary, Rettig, at his safety position, notched the second most tackles (58) while snaring fi ve interceptions and will once again lead a veteran unit that fea-tures Duncan (43 tackles, two picks), Wal-ters, and Bowen. In addition, Duncan will handle all of the Flyers’ kicking duties after booting a school-record 50-plus extra points a year ago, while Jake Rettig will be the punter.

Coach: Ken James, 29th year, (160-129)Last year: 8-3 (7-0, TAAC)Preview: The Rangers’ top two offensive threats, junior quarterback Mike Vallejo and senior fi rst-team All-TAAC running back Dominik Bermejo, return. Vallejo ran and threw for more than 1,500 combined yards as a sophomore in Northwood’s wishbone offense, including 1,380 yards on the ground on 140 carries, good for 9.9 yards per attempt. He also had 25 touch-downs and led the area by scoring 156 points.

“We expect him to have more com-mand of the offense,” James said. “He has a year under his belt as a starter, so the game should slow down for him because he has more ex-perience. We expect him to be more effi cient, especially throwing the ball. He’s a good

option quarterback and throwing was not his forte, but he’s much better this year.”

Bermejo rushed for more than 1,300 yards last season and will be joined in the backfi eld by senior halfback Chanlor Hayes, “who is as fast as Bermejo,” accord-ing to James. The Rangers’ other potential running backs are senior Jacob Zieroff, ju-niors Jonny Wheeler and Joey Woody, and sophomores Gavin Fritz and Trevor Mack.

Scott Slater and Jacob Vickers return at wideout, while fellow juniors Sean Whit-more and Collin Gutekunst will also see action. Vickers was a third-team All-Ohio kicker last season.

Senior guard Myles Habel (6-2, 290), an all-conference selection, anchors the line and will be joined by senior Travis Sin-glar, who has moved from center to tackle. Other O-line candidates include sopho-more center Ben Goins, junior guard Jacob Shephard and sophomore tackle Christian Vickers. Sophomore Nick Bonnette will ro-tate in at tackle possibly along with fresh-man Zac Heuser.

“Those kids are good football play-ers, but they’re young and inexperienced,” James said. “It’s a concern, in terms of be-ing able to pick up blitzes and things like that. They have to learn to work like a unit. We’re making good progress.”

The Rangers are switching from a 3-4 to a 4-3 defense because, James said, “Over-

all, it will make us faster on defense.”“Nine of the 10 teams we play this year

will throw it a bunch,” he said. “We’re not going to see a lot of tight ends. We’ll see more three and four wide receiver stuff.”

Bermejo returns at safety after leading the team with 94 tackles last year; senior linebacker Dylan Napier made 93 stops. Bermejo is a three-year starter on offense and defense.

“He’s a good football player,” James said. “He’s kind of skinny looking. He’s not going to scare anybody when he gets off the bus, at 5-10, 165 pounds soaking wet. But he’s faster than heck and he knows how to play the game.”

The line will feature Habel at nose guard/end along with returning starter Will Peart, a junior. Seniors Devon Dunbar, Jason Diaz and Seth Aldridge, junior Dil-lon Cathers and sophomores Tyler Arman, Anthony Arzuaga and Austin Weatherholt will also see action.

“We’re going to platoon quite a few people,” James said. “At a small school, you’re a couple injuries away from chang-ing the complexion of your team. We’re constantly trying to build depth as much as we can, for security purposes.”

Joining Napier at linebacker will in-clude Mack, Hayes, juniors Wheeler and Troy Schmitz, and sophomores Andrew

Claus and Dustin Fry.“The linebackers are quick and they’ve

done a good job going downhill and stop-ping the run,” James said. “So far they’ve been an aggressive crew, outside and inside ‘backers both. They’ve done a good job of adapting.”

The defensive backfi eld returns se-nior cornerbacks Derek Florez and Jayden Parker, while Slater and sophomore Tyler Baer could also see time. Zieroff, Fritz and sophomore Austin Krueger will get a look at safety.

“At this point I think we’re ahead of where we were last year,” James said. “We’ve got more starters back than last year and more experience. If we can stay healthy, we feel we have a team that has a chance to be good.”

Coach: Mike May, seventh year, 31-29Last year: 5-5 overall (4-3, SBC)Preview: After going 20-10 over a three-year span from 2010-12, the Oak Harbor Rockets regressed last year, fi nishing at .500. There are reasons to believe Oak Har-bor can bounce back this year. For one, the team returns 14 starters and is led by a versatile group of 16 seniors that features a combination of strong, imposing lineman and athletes capable of making big plays. May is hoping that the new offense he’s installed will allow his backs and receivers to fi nd space and wreak havoc on defenses. The offense has been switched from the

I-formation to harness the talent of running backs like Cole Weirich and Andrew Heberling and quarterback Andre Ramsey. “We’ve switched to the wing-T offense with some

spread element included in it,” May said. “We are no-huddle and have the capability to run a fast tempo when we want to. We must establish the run and be able to pass effi ciently to keep teams honest.” Joining Weirich and Heberling in the backfi eld will be Kalob Vargas with Jona-than Frederick and Mike Osbourne getting some reps. Jourdan Maguire and Rhett Pe-tersen will split time at receiver and Kyle Pape is set to start at tight end. Last season, Heberling burst onto the scene as a sophomore, rushing for 825 yards on 101 carries (8.2 per carry) and eight touchdowns. Weirich ran for 844 yards on 120 carries, good for seven yards per attempt. Weirich also reached the end zone 10 times and scored 62 points. They helped to pace the rushing attack with Ben Genzman, who has graduated, and Weirich, who split time at quarterback with Ramsey. The team is hoping Ramsey has benefi tted after getting some experi-ence last year under center. Last year, he threw 16 passes, completing eight for 89 yards in a run-dominated offense. It starts up front with the offensive line. The Rockets feature some size — Vince Szabo (6-4, 275), T.J. Lawrence (6-2, 275), Brandon Garber (6-0, 240), Ben Bergman (5-10, 185), Brandon Hymore (5-11, 190) — and is capable of establishing control at the line of scrimmage. In a run-oriented of-

Oak Harbor Rockets (Photo courtesy of Woodard Photographic by Lifetouch)

fense, blocking is at a premium. On top of that, the fact that Oak Harbor will be run-ning up-tempo means the linemen will have to be in shape, a challenge for anyone that big. Defensively, May has always preached the importance of limiting big plays, and this year is no different. The Rockets have traditionally employed a 4-4 defense and this year’s group has Frederick, Lawrence, Steve Simkus, Brandon Garber, Josh Beck-husen and Tim Mossman on the line with Vargas, Maguire, Pape, Ben Petersen and Caleb Oberther as the linebackers. Weirich, Osbourne and Ethan Schwaderer round out the secondary. Media and coaches picked the Rockets to fi nish fourth in the Sandusky Bay Confer-ence, right where they were last year. Clyde, Perkins and Huron are predicted to battle it out for the league title, but Oak Harbor is hoping that it can sneak into the mix. It won’t be easy, though. The Rockets have put together another diffi cult sched-ule that includes the usual list of SBC foes (minus Sandusky St. Mary, which left the conference to join the Sandusky River League), and non-conference games against Ottawa-Glandorf, Genoa, Eastwood and Fremont St. Joseph. In opening scrimmages, Oak Harbor

faced Lake and Bellevue, exposing some of the team’s weaknesses and giving the Rock-ets a chance to work on fi xing them in the lead up to the season opener. “We scrimmaged two very good foot-ball teams,” May said. “We had trouble containing Lake quarterback (Jared Rettig) in the fi rst scrimmage. I felt like we im-proved a lot (against) Bellevue.” May is confi dent his seniors can provide the guidance necessary to steer the team in the right direction, something he’s relied heavily upon in the past. “Our schedule is very demanding,” he said. “It will be important for us to get off to a good start in our non-league part of the schedule. Our seniors will need to keep providing excellent leadership.”

Rockets hope new-look offense will lift them

Coach: Dan Chipka, fi rst yearLast year: 2-8 (2-3 TCL)Preview: Chipka would love to make a big splash in his fi rst season and guide the In-dians to a City League championship. “More than anything we’ve stressed that we have to fi nd a way to get better every day and identify and work on areas we need to work on to improve every day,” Chipka said. “Wins and losses will take care of them-selves,” Chipka said. “We’ll have a success-ful season if we do that. It’s just about hav-ing the consistency and performance. We just really have to have consistency and performance as individuals, coaches and as

a program.” Waite, which has about 60 players on its roster, re-turns nine starters on of-fense and six on defense. The misdirection-based offense, which Chipka

calls a “short pistol fl ex bone,” will be di-rected by senior returning starter Jeremy Pratt. Offensive coordinator Chris Wilhelm will call the plays.

Last year, Pratt completed 110 of 235 passes (46.8 percent) for 1,295 yards and six touchdowns, plus he ran for 615 yards on 141 attempts (4.4) and fi ve more TDs. Returning receiver Diondre Irish caught 33 passes for 522 yards, good for 15.8 per catch.

“We’ll certainly look to the quarter-back to get involved in the running game, and we also have a hyrbid player who is not quite a running back or receiver,” Chip-ka said. “We’ll put him in motion to run some options and jet sweeps. We’ll fake to him and give it to the other back. It’s up-tempo, its unpredictiable and balanced, and the quarterback can get involved in the pass game and the run game.”

Chipka said the offense will rely heav-ily on Pratt’s decision-making ability.

“He’s looked excellent,” the coach said. “He’s making a lot of exciting plays. He’s about 5-11 and 180 pounds, but he can move and he gets upfi eld quickly and makes vertical cuts. We’re putting a lot on the quarterback’s shoulders.”

Chipka said senior Nate Houle will “never leave the fi eld” as a running back, linebacker and special teams player. Senior

Jermaine Brown will line up in the back-fi eld or out wide, and junior Kelvin Downer will play the hybrid back position as well. Houle ran for 525 yards on 109 carries (4.8) and four TDs last year.

“Entering camp we didn’t know who the backup running back was going to be,” Chipka said, “but Jermaine has stepped up and is really running hungry right now. Kelvin will be set as a receiver or wide wing, and we want to get him in motion and fi nd ways to get him the ball. He’s a talented young man.”

Junior Anthony Ashford will play the hybrid position, as well as tight end and tailback.

“He’s going to do a lot for us,” Chipka said. “He’s as versatile as they come - big, physical and fast. He’s the total package.”

The Indians’ top receiver is senior Di-ondre Irish, who was one of the leading pass catchers in the CL last season.

“He has versatility and can stretch the fi eld,” Chipka said. “We can throw him the deep ball and he can run the slant and split defenders.”

Five full- or part-time starters return on the offensive line: senior left tackle Dornae Higgs, senior left guard Jovan Sanson, se-nior center Nick Jensen, junior right guard Noah Paprocki and sophomore right tackle Dakota Stevenson.

“This group is very hard working,” Chipka said. “They don’t say a whole lot, they just absorb everything you tell them. They’re extremely intelligent and they work well together.”

Waite returns four experienced defen-sive linemen, including starters Higgs, Pa-procki and Sanson. Junior Demitri Reneau will play tackle on defense and rotate at guard and tackle on offense.

“We’re going to be getting kids in and out, trying to establish more depth,” Chip-ka said. “At times we’re going to look like hockey shifts on defense, getting guys in and out.”

Houle and Jensen will start at lineback-er, with junior Eduardo Jackson and sopho-more Octavio Ortega seeing plenty of action.

The secondary consists of Irish at free safety and cornerbacks M.C. Harris and ei-ther Downer or sophomore Dalson James. Senior Israel Diaz, who can play receiver or tight end, will play the Indians’ “bandit” outside linebacker/strong safety position on defense. Ashford will play the “spur” position, a combination of down lineman, linebacker and defensive back.

“I’m very impressed with his work eth-ic and the way he’s coming along,” Chipka said.

Ed Ickes and Rob DeYoung are Waite’s co-defensive coordinators.

Coach: Brian Spicer, fi rst yearLast year: 6-4 (3-4, NBC)Preview: Woodmore is a team in transition. That’s because the Wildcats lost nearly all of their production on offense and are welcoming a new head coach. Gone from last year are quarterback Jake Matwiejczyk, running back Tony Ro-zzi and wide receiver Evan Ulinski, the of-fense’s top three players in 2013. All gradu-ated, leaving the offense with a void in pro-duction. But new coach Brian Spicer is confi-dent that he can help Woodmore to contin-

ue forward progression, as they’ve done the last three years, going from 2-8 to 4-6 to 6-4. Spicer, who came to Elmore from Westfall High School in Williamsport, a town

located about 30 miles south of Colum-bus, comes from solid football pedigree. He grew up and played high school foot-ball in Massillon before an appointment to the U.S. Army Academy in West Point and serving in the military. Since then, he’s coached football at a bevy of schools, learn-ing along the way, most notably the spread offense. Spicer knows that it will be a challenge for his club to compete in a league that fea-tures Genoa, Eastwood and Lake. “We are very green, a very inexperi-enced team,” Spicer said. “We only have five kids that saw the field a lot last year, and 10 returning lettermen. Of those five, only one of them is back in the same po-sition, the other four are in different posi-tions. At Westphal last year, I had a very similar team that had graduated a lot of se-niors, and I learned some things last year that this year’s group benefits from. We’re ahead of where I thought we’d be. I’m real happy with our progress. I’m happy with the scrimmage we had last week.” Spicer, who’s had his share of success coaching at other schools, is just trying to keep things simple with his new club. “I’ve been trying to get these guys to see what we’re doing and our focus is on us,” he said. “We haven’t talked about how bad or good anyone else is. I don’t want them worrying about that. We are trying to create

an attitude where, if we do what we’re sup-posed to, we can be competitive and have a chance to win. We’re not a top four team (in the league) and we’ve got to break that barrier, we’ve got to gain some ground. We just want to make sure that we can build it to where, every time we step on the field, we have a chance to win. We worry about what we can do. We give ourself a chance to win if we focus on ourselves.” On offense, Spicer will employ a spread, just like former coach Britton Devi-er did. Spicer’s offense resembles the one Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez uses. Junior Connor Breman will lead the way at quarterback. “He didn’t see a lot of action last year,” Spicer said. “He’s a smart kid, does a real good job, and throws a nice ball — the kind of kid we want in an offense. There are a lot of reads, a lot of checks. He’s just got to be the guy that runs the show. His job is to make sure we’re in a good place. We told him, ‘You don’t have to win the game with your arm or your legs, but you have to rely on your brain.’ He’s a good one to have back there.” D.J. Wellins, Ross Wolford and J.P. At-kins are the starting receivers and Logan Fonseca and Todd Williams will serve as the running backs, though there is some variety within the offense that allows the

players to fill various positions. Plus, there is plenty of depth at the skill positions, something that’s given Spicer reason to be optimistic. Last year, Fonseca caught three passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns. “Every single one of those guys has a backup that’s about as good as they are,” he said. “We have guys that can come in and do the job. We have about 10 kids that we can get the ball to. It’s nice because it doesn’t put the weight of the game on one person’s shoulders. Especially for a young team, it’s nice to know that pressure’s not on them. That has to be our strength — getting the ball to whoever needs it. We have skill kids that are pretty good. We might not have the best kid, but our five kids that we’re trying to get the ball to are as good as anyone’s five kids.” Defensively, Spicer wants his kids to play with aggression, taking the fight to the opponents. Senior defense lineman Ian Weishuhn returns after getting 5½ tackles for a loss last year and senior linebacker Jeremy Cuevas had two interceptions. “We really just fly to the ball,” he said. “I think we’re fearless — I have guys that want to hit somebody. It’s about out-num-bering guys at the point of attack and we’ve got to get guys there in a hurry. We play a style that allows guys a lot chances to do that. We’re not holding anything back. We emphasize defense a lot.”
