Consistency was a majorproblem for Wake Forest lastseason.

The Demon Deacons beateventual bowl-winners N.C.

    but lost topowerhousesClemson andNotre Dame

by a combined 10 points. But that same team lost

to Virginia Tech by 21, toVanderbilt by 34 and to

North Carolina by 25.This seasons team, led by

junior quarterback TannerPrice, will look to eliminatethose inconsistencies and

build on a season that earnedthem a place in their first

bowl game since 2008.Since Ive been here weve

been a young team, Price said. Each year we get more andmore confident, and it allowsus to play better as were morecomfortable with other.

Price and backs MichaelCampanaro and Josh Harris

will lead the offense.Campanaro, who had 73

receptions for 833 yards lastseason, will be a key offensive

component, while Harris willattempt to rebound from an

ball last year, and I thinkthat was the emphasis he puton our offense to become

better at running the ball.To accomplish this task,

the offensive line will need togel quickly. Four of the fivestarters from last years teamgraduated.

But Price is not concernedabout his new lineups lack ofexperience.

I feel really confident inthis line, Price said. We got anew offensive line coach whodid a great job with them inthe spring and really got themready.

The offense may scorethe points, but it will be thedefense that carries WakeForest this season.

One of its strengths will bethe secondary, led by redshirtsophomore Merrill Noel.

Noel earned FreshmanAll-America honors in 2011and was named the ACCDefensive Rookie of the Year.

On the defensive line,Nikita Whitlock will be aplayer to watch. He looks to

If everything had goneaccording to plan, JheranieBoyd and Erik Highsmith

wouldnt have played in 2009.They certainly didnt

expect to.At the time, Boyd and

Highsmith were just aboutto begin their North Carolinacareers. They were truefreshmen trying to move upin a crowded depth chart, and with several veteran

    wide receivers blocking their

path, it seemed unlikelythat they would be able toadvance.

But as the season neared, injuries cut into the TarHeels depth at wide receiver.

Suddenly, Boyd andHighsmith were plucked fromtheir roles on UNCs scoutteam and thrust into practice

with the starting squad anabrupt change of plans.

And as far as Highsmith isconcerned, that change wasfor the better.

Just getting thrown inthe fire so quick, I think thathelped me out these past cou-ple of years, said Highsmith,

who is now entering his senior

season. Now Im just tell-ing the freshmen, You never

    I figured if I got a littlebigger, a little stronger, a

little faster Id be better,Whitlock said. So thats whatI did. I worked on all aspectsof my game.

In 2011, Whitlock was oneof WFUs most disruptiveplaymakers with a team-high14 tackles-for-loss and 3.5sacks.

With these weapons on hisroster, Grobes main concern

will be to keep them all healthy.I feel great about our front

people its just a matter ofnot getting anybody bangedup, Grobe said. Its a matterof being lucky. If we stayhealthy, weve got a front seventhat can get the job done.

line up in the spread pri-marily from the shotgun for-mation this season and arelooking to run more plays pergame than ever before.

Fedora has warned fans thatif they leave their seats duringgames this year, they are likelyto miss a UNC touchdown.

We want to run 75 to 80

plays a game thats ourgoal, and the quicker we snapthe ball, the more plays wecan run. So thats our man-tra, Renner said.

When the ball gets down,we want to snap it as quickly aspossible no matter what it is.

On defense, things willalso look much differentthan under previous regimes.Fedoras staff brings a physical4-2-5 defensive alignment thatfeatures two unique positions.

Those new spots are appro-priately named the banditand the ram projecting thephysical and aggressive styleFedora wants.

Im very excited to playin this new defense wevegot, senior linebacker KevinReddick said. Its a veryattacking defense, and I reallycant wait to start playing ingames.

Theyve got me comingfrom everywhere this year,so its going to be fun to seehow it turns out, and Im justready to play.

And when it comes to play-

ing smart, those responsibili-ties befall the self-proclaimedformer gunslinger Renner.

The two things I talk to(Renner) most about are tak-ing care of the football andmanaging the game. Thats it.Those are the only things thatI want him to worry about,Fedora said.

If he does those twothings, well be fine. Theoffense is only going to go asfar as hell take us or as far ashes willing to take us.

The outline is clear and hasbeen since day one. The daysof a slow, pro-style offenseare gone. Renner noted the

toughest adjustment stemsfrom the increased condition-ing required to sprint on to thenext play as soon as the lastone ends rather than breakingthe huddle with 15 seconds lefton the play clock and walkingto the line of scrimmage.

Though Fedoras strategyhas been highly publicizedand the expectations are set,the Tar Heels identity is still

    yet to be determined.

Fedora, who says hes nevercomfortable with anything atthis point in the season, willhave a better idea of what theteams identity will be after hesees it in real game time.

We havent spent all ofour time focusing on Elon our focus has been on NorthCarolina, Fedora said.

Our focus has been onthe Tar Heels and who weare because we dont have anidentity yet. We wont have anidentity until after the gameSaturday.

    fedorafrom page 1

Highsmith and fellow seniorBoyd entered camp much likefreshmen. They needed time toadjust to Fedoras no-huddle,fast-tempo spread offense, butthey needed to do so quickly.

Thats because atthe moment, Boyd andHighsmith are the only two

starting receivers with recep-tions to their names.

Not only will they carry aheavy workload this season,

but their younger teammateswill be looking to them forguidance as well.

(Highsmith) and Boyd aretwo guys who have been there

before, and theyve been in agreat system before Theyhave a great foundation, saidGunter Brewer, UNCs new

wide receivers coach. Youhave to look to somebody toshow you the way, and theyreour way right now.

For the most part, theyveadjusted to the new offensefairly quickly. Highsmith said

he now knows it like the backof his hand, and the transition

was a relatively smooth onefor Boyd as well.

    Those three years in the

pro-style stuff just taught mehow to get concepts, Boydsaid. So learning this offense

wasnt too hard. Now, Boyd and Highsmith

will need to ensure theirteammates learn it, too.

    Leading the offense

Bryn Renner might beUNCs quarterback, but he

wont be the only one callingsignals this season.

Because Fedoras offensedoesnt huddle, its crucialthat everyone on the fieldcommunicates and stays intune with the game plan.

If one receiver runs hisroute incorrectly, it could

jeopardize a play or depending on the situation even a game.

So for UNCs offense to runeffectively, Renner will needto rely on Highsmith andBoyd to interpret the playsand direct on-field traffic.

Theyre really the leadersof this wide receiver groupand basically the whole

offense, Renner said. So theyhave a lot of responsibility asfar as getting the young guys

where they need to go.As UNC enters the season,

    receiversfrom page 1

    Roy Smith a walk-on trackathlete.

Its not the most well-trav-eled group, but what thoseplayers lack in experience, they make up for in aptitude.

Theyve made tremendousgrowth, Highsmith said.On the first day of trainingcamp, they were like deerin the headlights, too. Buttheyre coming along, gettingthe offense, just getting morecomfortable with themselvesin the offense and their role.

And in a sense, theyrefollowing in the footsteps oftheir senior leaders.

    A new number one

As freshmen battlingfor playing time, Boyd andHighsmith could have easily

    become rivals three years ago.

Instead, they were calledTwin Towers by theirteammates because ofhow much time they spenttogether.

Sure, they competed, butthey used competition as ameans to drive each other andto improve themselves.

They knew a day wouldcome when they would

be looked at as the highlyvaunted veterans like theBrandon Tates and HakeemNickses before them.

For the past two seasons, that role has been occupied

by Dwight Jones. But now, itstheirs for the taking.

Every year someone elsesteps up to be the No. 1 guy,Highsmith said. And youknow, Dwight was a hell ofa player. I respect him. Hetaught me a lot But I guess

Georgia Tech won its firstsix games last season.

The team even peaked atNo. 12 in the rankings, butthen the road got bumpy.

Complacency set in afterwe started (last) season sosmooth, quarterback Tevin

Washington said. We hadntlost in six games. We feltlike we were going to go (to

Virginia) and take it. Welearned a lotfrom that.

Ga. Tech fellto Virginia 24-21 on Oct. 15.

It was the first of five losses

that came in 2011s last sevengames.

Amidst losses, two winswere enough for the YellowJackets to still finish 8-5 over-all and 5-3 in the ACC.

But for a better 2012 record, the team needs to improve onspecial teams and its ability toclose out the season.

And this season brings anew challenge, too.

Ga. Tech opens Saturday inBlacksburg, Va. against ACCCoastal Division rival Va. Tech.

I think theres positivesand negatives both ways, Ga.Tech coach Paul Johnson said. Its going to be a huge gameand has been for our division.

But theres a ton of football leftafter that game, its not do ordie.

That mentality of havinga ton of football left helpedGa. Tech claim a bid to theHyundai Sun Bowl last season, even after the drop in momen-tum, to give the program its15th straight bowl game.

Boston College has a longway to go to prove its worthin the ACC this season.

The Eagles enter the 2012campaign coming off their

worst year since 1995. In bothseasons, the team posted a

record of just4-8. It was justtheir secondseason withouta bowl invita-tion since 1998.

That poor showing was dueto BCs inability to get thingsgoing early in the season.

Only one of those four winscame in the first half of theseason, as the Eagles went 1-5to start the year. Their record

of 3-3 in the second half ofthe season, though, showedsome improvement.

We just came into thewhole season just slow, tooslow, defensive tackle KalebRamsey said. I think towardthe end of the season welearned how to persevere, howto practice, and how to attack.

But a slow start doesntaccount for all the problems.

Plenty of other issues con-tributed to the teams toughseason, including their youth the team lost 18 starterslast year.

I hate to deal with theproblems because it soundslike excuses, head coach

Frank Spaziani said. But wehad injuries, we had coachingchanges, we had a young team.

Some of those young play-ers will have to use last yearsexperiences to step up and fillsome very big shoes.

Among others, the Eagleslost All-American linebackerLuke Kuechly to the NFL draft.Kuechly, who holds the schoolcareer record for tackles, wasselected ninth overall in thedraft by the Carolina Panthers.

second nationally in rushing. With Washington and Uzzi atthe helm, Ga. Tech hopes toextend the bowl streak to 16.

Junior linebacker JeremiahAttaochu will head a youngdefensive squad workingtoward the same goal.

Theres a greater comfortlevel, Attaochu said. (Theguys) know the technique and

what coach is looking for. Alot of guys have taken thatinto the offseason, gotten inshape and ready to play in

    this defense.Five defensive starting

spots will be filled with newfaces, including the hole left

by leading tackler JulianBurnett, a senior who will notplay for health reasons.

In addition to the newdefensive faces, Ga. Tech will

welcome special teams coachDavid Walkosky to its staff.

Hes done a great job inmotivating our guys to want to

be on special teams, Johnsonsaid. Theyre excited about his

energy and enthusiasm.Ga. Tech is one of few teams

nationally that will enter theseason with a special teamscoach. To hire Walkosky,Johnson sacrificed an offen-sive coaching position, so hes

watching to see if the tradeworks in the long run.

The proof is in the pud-ding, he said. Well see when

we start playing if were better.

    Football 2012Friday,August 31,2012 The Daily Tar Heel4 Football 2012 Friday,August 31,2012The Daily Tar Heel 5

    By Kelly ParsonsSenior Writer

Kevin Reddick had a big decision tomake.

On March 12, almost 21 months afterthe NCAA launched a paralyzing inves-tigation into the North Carolina footballprogram, it laid down the hammer, insti-tuting scholarship reductions, fines anda one-year postseason ban.

Reddick and the rest of UNCs risingseniors were granted permission to leaveand play right away at another Division Iprogram, a privilege typically not afford-ed to athletes once they sign their nameson the dotted line.

If he stayed, the linebacker wouldnever again play in a bowl game, thedream of competing for an ACC champi-

onship would be dashed. If he left, hedforsake the defensive unit in which hedinvested three years of his life.

For Reddick, it was a lot to consider.

    Something new

A three-star recruit from New BernHigh School, Reddick led the Bears to the4-AA North Carolina state title duringhis senior year. At fullback, Reddicks twotouchdowns earned him offensive MVPhonors of the championship game thatsnapped Independences seven-year state-title streak.

Two months later, he committed andbecame part of North Carolinas 18-man2008 recruiting class.

When I made my decision to come toNorth Carolina, it was because of coach(Butch)Davis and his staff, Reddick said.It was something new.

Because of academic reasons, Reddickspent six months at Hargrave Military

Academy before enrolling at UNC inJanuary 2009. Ever since, hes been a

reliable fixture for the Tar Heels.Reddick started the final seven games of

his freshman campaign. The next season,as his teammates were declared ineligibleleft and right for transgressions relatedto the NCAA investigation, Reddick kepthis hands clean and was one of only twodefensive players to start all 13 games.

As a junior last year, he was second onthe team with 71 tackles and named cap-tain of the defense.

At this point in his career, footballcomes easily to Reddick.

As you get older, you stop thinking,he said. No matter what it is.

But the decision of whether to leave allof that behind didnt come as naturally.

    Where he belonged

It was the opportunity to experiencesomething new that originally attractedReddick to North Carolina.

After careful consideration, Reddickrealized he wouldnt have to leave ChapelHill to experience that again.

He liked the never-say-die attitudecoach Larry Fedora and company

brought to the program. But most of all,Reddick couldnt imagine leaving histeammates behind.

So he decided to stay.I felt like the defense, I belonged on

it, Reddick said.In three seasons at UNC, Reddick has

sailed through the ups and downs of a pro-gram tainted by infractions and constrained

by unknowns. In his senior season, Reddickwill be led by a third different head coach.

His teammates are quick to value theknowledge that only that kind of experi-ence can garner.

Hes been through a lot. We look upto him, tailback Giovani Bernard said.Kevin has been really able to help meout, in situations off the field and on thefield. If I feel a little pressure, whatever itmay be, hes been right there.

Reddick is all about making footballfun. But when he puts on the light blueand white, hes got the kind of tunnel

vision his superiors expect from someoneto which they entrust the success of a team.

That dedication makes Fedoras jobeasier. With Reddick on the field, the first-

year coach doesnt need to worry abouthis defensive unit much. The respect the

younger players have for their senior line-backer is enough to keep them in line.

You can see it in him each and everyday, Fedora said. He carries himself the

way hes supposed to carry himself. Hecarries himself as a leader.

If you want to ask, its his defense.

    A better man

A stone-faced Reddick sat in the KenanFootball Center on Monday afternoonto address the media, the bright green ofthe untouched field shone through thefloor-to-ceiling glass windows behind him.

At the first mention of Saturdays season-opening game against Elon, he flashed ahuge grin.

Just like he was when he started hiscollege career, Reddick is an integral partof something new. He thrives on that.

Weve waited a long time for this to beour team, said quarterback Bryn Renner, describing he and Reddicks combinedleadership. Hes done a great job for ourdefense, just kind of getting them moti-

vated every day for practice Hes goingto be the focal point of that defense.

Under Fedoras direction, UNCsdefense has switched from the 4-3 forma-tion to a 4-2-5. The new scheme will fea-ture more blitzes and a faster tempo.

The welcomed changes and his respon-sibility to help instill them have forcedhim to not only be a better football player,

Virginias 2011 gains on youthful shouldersBy Matthew Cox

    Staff Writer

Virginia is coming off itsfirst winning season since2007, but head coach MikeLondon will have to replace

nearly half of last years start-ers in his third season.

Seven starters return onoffense, including quarter-

back Michael Rocco andrunning backPerry Jones,

who led theteam withmore than 900

rushing yards last season. We have a lot of guys that

have played in games, butmaybe not played downs onethrough four, so that will bethe difference, London said.

Jones will look to becomethe first Virginia back withmore than 1,000 rushing

yards in a season since Alvin

Pearman in 2004.Virginia also has five

    returning defensive starters

but will be without last yearspunter and kicker.

It keeps me up at night,London said. Im committedto bringing in a full comple-ment of kickers to find outhow good they are.

London said the Cavaliersare a young team, and heexpects incoming freshmen toplay im mediately.

Were not at the pointnow where we can have theluxury of redshirting guys,he said. Were going to needsome help from some of theseincoming freshmen, andhopefully as we move downthe road here we can startredshirting some of theseguys like we want to.

The Cavaliers started 4-3last year and had a four-gameconference winning streak

before falling to rival VirginiaTech in their last regular-season game.

Had they won, they wouldhave landed a spot in the ACCChampionship game. Instead,

they settled for a berth in theChick-fil-A Bowl, where theylost to Auburn.

I think the guys respecthim so much because he isan example of what its like to

be a man, Jones said aboutLondon. I think that is oneof the biggest reasons why we

were able to have the seasonwe had last year because guysare fighting for someone thatthey love.

    team

    By Henry GarganAssistant Sports Editor

The pressure of belongingto a historically elite program

bites both ways for FloridaStates football team.

Though the Seminoles, ledby head coach Jimbo Fisher, are set to begin the season

ranked seventh in the nation, their players and fans knowall too well

what it feelslike to fallfrom such ahigh pedestal.

    Lastseasons team

entered the season rankedeven higher than this years sixth in both polls. Threelosses later, Florida Statedropped out of the rankingsand contention for a BCS bowl

    bid.The Seminoles finished

9-4, but were hamperedby injuries throughout theseason, losing star receiver

Rashad Greene for fourgames. Their 18-14 comebackwin against Notre Dame inthe Champs Sports Bowlcame at the price of severalmore injuries.

But this years team hopesthat memory, equally loftyexpectations and betterhealth will propel them in theother direction.

It has to be the year, redshirt senior quarterbackEJ Manuel said. I think that

will help us as seniors leavea legacy at Florida State. Wecan say that we helped bringthem back to the nationalchampionship, we helped putFlorida State back where it

used to be.For both Manuel andstandout defensive backBrandon Jenkins, collegefootball ends after this season.Jenkins, one of FSUs fourpreseason All-ACC selections, said that urgency has helpedhim focus on the minute, yetcritical aspects of his game.

Its just little techniquestuff that I missed, he said. Imissed a lot of sacks too. Its

just the little things that makeyou want to go back andmake that play again and takecontrol of that situation andmake it better.

What FSU missed mostlast season, though, was con-

sistent play from its offensiveline. Last year, Florida Statewas ranked 110th in pass-rushdefense, allowing more thanthree sacks per game.

But when injuries forcedFisher to use four rookie line-men against Notre Dame, heliked what he saw.

Sophomores Josue Matiasand Tre Jackson, battle-hardened by that experience,

will join redshirt sophomoreand converted defensive tackleCameron Erving as new addi-tions to FSUs offensive line.

Ideally, an improved frontline will create more offensiveopportunities for Manuelthrough the air. But more crit-ically for the Seminoles, it willopen up a running game that, not coincidently, ranked 112thin the nation last season.

Coupled with FSUs peren-nially strong defense, thisimprovement has Fisherexcited about, rather thanscared of, high expectationsfor his team.

I know the guys behindthe scenes and know whattheyve done. I feel very muchcomfortable in our new lead-ership. I have confidence inthese guys, I really believe it.

To break down theClemson football team, justlook at the numbers.

Like zero, a numberthe Tigers could tape to

their locker room wall formotivation. Its how manytimes theyve been pickedto win the ACC since coachDabo Swinney took over.

But they have won it withSwinney.Twice.

Or the teamcould focus onthe number14. That many

wins in 2012would make a perfect season.

Our goal is to win themall. Simple as that, Swinneysaid. I dont take a backseatto any team, and I dont backdown from any challenges.

    Plenty of numbers back up

Swinneys confidence. Like 14,which doesnt just stand fora season full of wins. Its alsoClemsons preseason nationalranking.

Or 10 and two. Those num-bers sit on the backs of the

jerseys of first-team All-ACCquarterback Tajh Boyd andfirst-team All-American widereceiver Sammy Watkins.

Boyd and Watkins led anexplosive offense that scored33.6 points per game in 2011,second in the ACC.

Last year, the offense rolledits way to the number 10 the Tigers scored more than30 points in a game 10 times, including a season-high 59against North Carolina.

The offense also carriedClemson to the 2011 ACCtitle. The Tigers blew out

Virginia Tech 38-10 in theACC Championship game.

And center DaltonFreeman said it could be even

    better in 2012.Honestly, last season

we were a no-huddle, high-tempo team, but we stillkind of dragged out someof our p lays, Freeman said.It wasnt until this spring

that I really thought we werestarting to push the tempo.

Watkins has anothernumber two with him besidesthe one stitched onto his jersey.

He has been suspended forthe seasons first two games

after a May drug arrest. And Clemson has more

numbers to worry about.Like four, the losses the

Tigers took in their final sixgames last season. All were byat least two touchdowns.

Or 10.5, the number ofsacks first-team All-ACCdefensive end Andre Branch who was picked in the sec-ond round of the 2012 NFLdraft collected last year.

Or seven, the number ofgames in which the Tigersallowed 30 points in 2011 only three fewer times thanthey scored 30-plus. As aresult, Swinney said Clemsonsimplified its defense for 2012.

But most of all, there is70 the number of pointsthe Tigers gave up to West

Virginia in the Orange Bowl.Clemson lost 70-33.

Waking up at 5 a.m. inthose morning workouts, (the

loss) obviously left a bittertaste in the mouth, Freemansaid. But at the end of theday we have to turn the page.

    Hokies Thomascomfortable at helm

    By Jonathan LaMantiaStaff Writer

Last year, Virginia Techquarterback Logan Thomas

was surrounded by playmak-ers as he eased into the start-ing role for the Hokies.

This year, he is the play-maker.

The depar-tures of run-ning backDavid Wilson,

who rushed for1,709 yards, and wide receiv-ers Jarrett Boykin and DannyCoale, who each tallied morethan 700 yards through theair, leave the burden squarelyon Thomas 6-foot-6 260-pound frame.

    But coach Frank

Beamer, the Football BowlSubdivisions active leader incareer coaching wins, is confi-dent Thomas can lead his unit.

Last year, we had a situa-tion where he was a new guyand we had a lot of experi-enced guys around him, andthey all are trying to take careof him, Beamer said. Now, Ithink hes kind of taking careof the inexperienced guysaround him.

This season, Thomas wontneed the three weeks he saidit took him to get comfortablein the starting role last year.

Im pretty confident inmyself, and Im pretty con-fident in what this team cando, Thomas said. We haveathletes in every position.Even up front in the offensiveline, theyre athletic.

Redshirt freshman MichaelHolmes will assume Wilsonsduties at tailback, and asmany as six other running

    backs might receive touchesthis season.

Beamer compared Holmesadded responsibility withThomas last year.

I think the uncertainty, itskind of like Logan last year he hasnt done it, but youknow he can, Beamer said.

The Hokies defense is adifferent story.

    Virginia Tech will return

nine starters from a defensethat was seventh-best in thecountry in scoring defense.

Their defense will be key asthey attempt to extend theirstreak of eight consecutive sea-sons with 10 or more wins, thelongest streak in the FBS.

Virginia Tech was able toconsistently pressure oppos-ing quarterbacks in 2011and looks to do the same in2012 as team sack leadersJ.R. Collins and James Gaylereturn.

    Just 60 minutes into his

first year as the Universityof Marylands head footballcoach, Randy Edsall alreadyhad one victory under his

belt a 32-24 defeat of theUniversity of Miami. With 11games left on the schedule, theseason seemed full of promise.

    But Edsall and theTerrapins

would onlydouble thistotal, end-ing the 2011season with adisappointing

two wins and 10 losses. Two and 10 was not

what we wanted, and weare extremely disappointed

in that, Edsall said. Thereare times in football where

you might not be able to sat-isfy everything in one year.Sometimes you have to taketwo steps back to move for-

    ward.Marylands first step this

offseason came with the addi-tion of defensive coordinatorBrian Stewart to the teamscoaching staff in January.

The Terrapins, who gave upa conference-worst 457 yardsof offense per game last sea-son, will play under Stewartsnew defensive scheme this

year. This season, Marylandwill switch from a 4-3 to a 3-4alignment.

Our defense will be a total-ly different animal this year, senior defensive tackle Joe

Vellano said. Its been a littledifficult making the change

This season the N.C. Statefootball team is taking thingsto the streets.

The This Is Our Statecampaign, which launchedthis summer, features playersin front of prominent North

Carolina sites and urges fansto send in theirown photos.

But theWolfpack willhave to do morethan pose forpictures to con-

tinue its quest toward becom-ing a top ACC football team.

NCSU surged in the sec-ond half of the 2011 season, finishing 8-5 overall and 4-4in the ACC. In the penulti-mate game of the season, the

    Wolfpack shocked then No.7Clemson, 37-13.

This season, NCSU returnswith many of the tools neces-sary for success against top

teams. This is by far the most

experienced and deepestteam weve had, head coachTom OBrien said. We wentthrough the first three yearslosing a third of the footballteam when we had to changethings around.

After being thrust into thestarting position last year

with the departure of quar-terback Russell Wilson, MikeGlennon returns with moreexperience and responsibility.

There were times last yearwhen I felt like I was hot andcold, Glennon said. But I feellike Ive learned a lot from thatpoint and just learned to take

control of the offense takecontrol of the team.

Being a senior now, with ayear under my belt, I feel likeguys look at me a different

way now.In his first year starting,

Glennon completed 62.5 per-cent of his passes for 3,054

yards and 31 touchdowns. While Glennon is focused

on completing passes, corner-back David Amersons sightsare set on disrupting them his opponents passes, that is.

Amerson set a single-sea-son ACC record with 13 inter-ceptions in 2011, includingtwo picks that led to NCSUs31-24 win over Louisville in

the Belk Bowl. The plays he makes on the

ball, theres just not a wordfor it its ridiculous, safetyEarl Wolff said. Having(Amerson) on my team as aplayer, a friend, a brother its great to have him there.

Wolff joins Amerson as apart of what could be a nearlyimpenetrable secondary. With255 career tackles, Wolff isthe most experienced mem-

ber of a veteran unit.Theres some experience

back there with playmakingand athleticism, Wolff said.Just all around I feel like wecan be the best in the nation.

NCSU will rely on its vet-

erans as they open the seasonfacing Tennessee in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game today.

I think its a great opponentto start the season off with

because its not going to beeasy, its going to be a tough, tough game to win, Glennonsaid. But we feel like weveprepared hard this whole off-season so we can be ready forit.

Miami ready to move past oseasonBy Robbie Harms

    Assistant Sports Editor

If theres one college foot-ball program that has rivaledNorth Carolina in negativeoff-the-field news during thepast few years, its Miami.

On July 20, Yahoo! releaseda scathing report that, among

    other things,alleged coach

    Al Goldenhad directknowledge

of potential recruiting viola-tions committed less than one

week after he was hired inDecember 2010.

The report is just one ofmany setbacks that haveplagued the Hurricanes thisoffseason, but Golden vows thepast is exactly that the past.

This is behind us, Goldensaid. We are moving forward. Our kids have moved for-

ward. Our team is making alot of progress.

The last time Miami won abowl game was in 2006, andevery year since then stories

have been written during theoffseason proclaiming thatthe Hurricanes are on the

verge of restoring the pro-grams glory.

I think people miss usbeing on the national scene,Golden said. You could arguethat when the Hurricanesare playing their best, thatsas good a ticket as any in thecity. Thats what we need toget back to.

Golden identified threemain areas in which his team

must improve to realize thatgoal nutrition, strengthand conditioning.

To that end, Miami hasbrought in nutritionists andupdated its strength trainingroutines, and Golden pledgesthat a new culture has per-

vaded the team.(Golden) shows us his

way, his plan, and we believein it, senior running backMike James said. Hes beenloyal to us, he stands for whathe believes in and we stand

    behind him.Perhaps the biggest on-field

issue for Miami was choosingits starting quarterback.

    Redshirt sophomore Ryan

Williams and junior StephenMorris battled for the spot incamp, and on Aug. 13, Morris

was named the starter.Ive got a lot of confidence

in Stephen, James said. Alot of people dont know thatStephen is a very, very smartkid. He knows his stuff insideand out Hes a vocal leader, hes more of a get-in-your-face, get-things-done type ofguy.

The Hurricanes openSaturday at Boston College,

and after the turbulent off-season, theyre ready to turnthe focus to actual competi-tion.

Everybody on the teamhas bought into coachGolden, bought into theprogram, senior defensive

    back Brandon McGee said.

Blue Devils find hope in close lossesBy Andrew Romaine

    Staff Writer

It has been nearly twodecades since the Duke foot-

ball team last had a winning

season or played in a bowlgame. And although the Blue

    Devils finishedlast season

with just threewins and inlast placein the ACC

Coastal Division for the sec-ond straight year, there was asilver lining the team lostfour games by a touchdownor less.

This year, the Blue Devilshope to come out on the otherside in close games.

Last year we lost a lot ofclose games, but thats thething with us were in it,said senior defensive linemanKenny Anunike. Were in alot of close games, but closeisnt good enough. We want to

win. We just need to finish. The Blue Devils have the

offensive weapons to have aturnaround season.

Senior quarterback SeanRenfree will start under cen-

ter for the third consecutiveseason. He is already the mostaccurate quarterback in Dukehistory and ranks in the topfive of the schools passingleaders.

    Renfrees go-to receiver,Conner Vernon, is a pre-season All-ACC selection.

Last year was last year, and this is a new year,

Vernon said. We have a newattitude on our shoulders, and

we felt like we are definitelygood enough to make a bowlthis year, and our attitudethis offseason is that we know

were good enough, so we justhave to come out and proveit.

Fifth-year coach DavidCutcliffe will do everythinghe can to get playmakers onthe field, including experi-

menting with different posi-tions. Back-up quarterbacksBrandon Connette and

Anthony Boone are mobileand versatile, and will seethe field in a variety of

schemes. The Blue Devils second-leading rusher last year,Desmond Scott, will likelytake most of his snaps at slotreceiver this season to takeadvantage of his speed andelusiveness in the open field.

Scott will help fill the voidleft by injured wide receiverBlair Holliday, who sufferedserious head injuries in a jetski accident in July.

The Blue Devils willwear helmet stickers thisseason to honor Holliday,

who was transferred fromUNC Hospitals to a braininjury rehabilitation center in

Atlanta in early August. Heremains in critical, but stablecondition.

If the Blue Devils canovercome the loss of Holliday

both emotionally and onthe football field they couldsnap the nations longest bowldrought.

This team is a bowl team,Cutliffe said. I cant let themget off the hook. They needto understand that theyreexpected to win and can

win. So thats going to be ourfocus.
