    Outdoor Truths

with Gary MillerIt is good to see some akerns (I just wanted

to see how that looked in print) hitting the

ground. Last year, my area was barren of

these deer delicacies. I’ve actually only seen

it that bad one other time. It forced the deer

into the fields and as a result, some big deer

were killed. And that is what happened last

year as well. This year has already returned

to normalcy which means there will be

acorns, but we’ll just have to find which

trees are burgeoning with an extra supply.

During the spring and summer deer are fo-

cused on plant life. It is the staple of their

diet. By the time the acorns are falling, they

are ready to add this other food group. And

as every hunter knows, if you will find these

nuts, you will find the deer.

Last hunting season was a visual reminder

of what our nation has went through as well.

It seems the barren trees have mirrored our

recent economy. Many people have had to

find other places to find their sustenance. It

has been tough on most everyone, but we

will get through this as well. It will not be by

the words of pundits or the writing of policy,

but by the sheer desire of God. What I mean

by that is it is God who sustains our world

and who keeps it in perfect balance.

If you have ever watched one of the scien-

tific channels, you will notice how many of

the shows approach their programming from

a “what if” scenario. What if a super comet

hits the earth as it once did? What if a giant

meteorite crashes into the ocean? What if

there is a massive star collision in space?

What if what used to be nothing, was found

to contain matter? That would really be

something? We would then have the proof

that not only does everything contain matter,

but nothing does as well. And if nothing con-

tains matter as everything does, we could

then finally prove that the earth was created

out of the same matter that nothing is com-

posed of and we would no longer have to

deal with God as the possible architect of it

all. I can see it now on the Discovery Chan-

    nel….. “British scientist discovers nothing’s

matter!”…… or is it nothing matters.

    Hmmm?

The truth is, God is not only the creator of

our universe, but He is the sustainer of it as

well. The critical balance is in His hands. He

is the one who stays the comet and stops the

meteorite from annihilating the earth. This

doesn’t mean that we should shirk our stew-

ardship responsibilities or that we should not

make necessary preparation for certain situ-

ations, but only that we ultimately realize

that whether it is an acorn, a cataclysmic

event, or you and me; He’s got the whole

    world in His hands.

    More local sports schedules

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Union Soft-

ball program announced today the signing of

MHS standout hurler Randie Jo Powers to its

squad for the upcoming 2011 season.

A standout at Middlesboro High School

in Middlesboro, Ky., Powers amassed im-

pressive stats over her last two seasons at the

high school level. Powers compiled a record

of 36-21 in 57 starts in the pitching circle.

She amassed an impressive 585 strikeouts

while walking 109 batters, a ratio of 5-to-1,

    in her 366 innings pitch.

Tough on the opposition, Powers limited

batters to a .156 batting average while also

earning 21 shutouts over her junior and sen-

ior seasons. In her senior campaign, she also

    pitched two no hitters.

After signing the local standout, head

coach Danny Fish commented, “I am thrilled

to have Randie Jo joining our program. She

has proven to be a solid pitcher at the high

school level and we look for her to continue

that at the next level with the Lady Bull-

    dogs.”

Fish went on to say, “We lost some

pitching depth from last season’s squad and

Randie Jo will certainly help in adding depth

to our pitching staff.” Photo submitted
