— outlook —

Beeville limped through the 2013 season, Jimmie Mitchell’s first at the helm, but should be ready to compete for a playoff spot this season. Beeville lost

just four seniors and returns 10 starters on the offensive side of the ball. Junior Ryan Pena will take over the signal-calling duties this season, after spending 2013 on the edge as an H-back. The offense has looked explosive through the team’s first two scrimmages, thanks in large part to Pena’s ability to throw it, and Robert Rodriguez’s ability to find holes in the ground game. Rodriguez has shined for the Trojans in the preseason and looks poised for a breakout season. He had 421 yards on the ground last year, but might be in line for a 1,500-plus yard campaign this year, his junior season. The defense has also looked good during the preseason. Bookend defensive ends Matthew Botello and Chon Hernandez are the studs up front. Botello might be the strongest player on the roster. The Trojans haven’t posted a winning record since 2008 and have missed the playoffs each of the past two years.

s mAtthew BotelloBotello isn’t a vocal

leader on the field, but he’s most certainly a leader by example. A move from defensive tackle to defensive end should benefit him and free him to better the 40-tackle, three-sack season he had a year ago. He’s physical and strong, and he’s got a quick first step. He will also see time as a tight end.

ryAn penAPena played

H-back last season, but he will be the full-time signal caller this year. He has the tools to thrive in Mitchell’s spread offense. He throws the ball well, and he’s a dangerous weapon in the ground game. A season with 1,000-plus both rushing and passing isn’t out of the question for the junior.

Best of Luck to All Our Area Teams!

Have a Great 2014 Season!

ConferenCe 5A Division I: Allen 63, Pearland 28

Allen cruised to its second straight 5A Division state championship, outscoring Pearland 42-7 over the second and third quarters in front of a state record crowd of 54,347 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Kyler Murray threw for 280 yards and four touch-downs and rushed for 188 yards and a score to win his second straight Offensive MVP award.

The attendance eclipsed the record set in the 1977 4A title tilt between Plano and Port Neches-Groves.

The win finished off an unblemished 16-0 season for the Eagles.

Division II: Cedar Hill 34, Katy 24Cedar Hill rallied from 14 down in the fourth quar-

ter to upend Katy in front of 30,285 fans at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

The Longhorns, who finished second in their district during the regular season, capitalized on two fumbles and a botched punt to score the game’s final 24 points after trailing 24-10 in the third.

DeMarkus Lodge scored on a 3-yard reception for the go-ahead score en route to winning Offensive MVP honors.

Cedar Hill finished the year 14-2.

ConferenCe 4A Division I: Guyer 31, Brennan 14

Guyer won its second straight title at AT&T Stadium because it was able to do what virtually no other team else had done all year — score against Brennan.

With the score tied at 7 in the second quarter, Guyer took the lead for good on a Jerrod Heard 4-yard touchdown run. Heard finished with 159 rush-

ing yards and 95 passing yards, earning Offensive MVP honors.

The Wildcats’ 31 points were the most allowed by Brennan all season and marked just the second time that a team had reached double figures against the Bears.

Guyer finished the season 14-2.

Division II: Aledo 38, Brenham 10Aledo finished off the single greatest offensive

season in prep football history with a romp of Brenham at AT&T Stadium.

The Aledo Bearcats became the first prep team in the nation to score more than 1,000 points in a sea-son, reaching the plateau with a 28-yard scoring grab by Ryan Newsome in the second quarter.

Luke Bishop threw for 157 yards and three TDs and rushed for 133 yards en route to Offensive MVP honors.

Aledo never trailed during the 16-0 campaign.

ConferenCe 3A Division I: Carthage 34, Kilgore 23

Carthage claimed its fourth championship since 2008 over nearby rival Kilgore in front of nearly 18,000 fans at AT&T Stadium.

The “Bulldog Bowl,” as it was dubbed because both teams are known as the Bulldogs, got interest-ing in the late stages.

Kilgore scored back-to-back TDs to start the fourth quarter, drawing to within 28-23. Carthage’s Tevin Pipkin strode in from 24 yards out shortly thereafter to seal the victory.

Carthage finished the year 15-1.

Division II: Argyle 38, Fairfield 33In another battle of two teams that share the

same nickname, the Argyle Eagles beat the Fairfield Eagles to win their first state title at AT&T Stadium.

Fairfield had the late lead after a safety and a 54-yard touchdown run, but let it slip away. Argyle’s Ian Sadler scored on a 3-yard run for the title-clinching TD.

Sadler finished with 284 all-purpose yards, includ-ing 109 rushing and 73 receiving. He rushed for three scores and returned a punt 65 yards for a TD on his way to Offensive MVP honors.

Argyle finished the year 16-0, ruining Fairfield’s unbeaten campaign in the process.

ConferenCe 2A Division I: Cameron Yoe 35, Wall 14

Cameron Yoe won its second straight crown by scoring 21 unanswered points in the final quarter to beat Wall at AT&T Stadium.

The Yoemen capped a 15-play, 85-yard drive with a 6-yard scoring strike from Jason Kopriva to wideout Aaron Sims to break a 14-all tie.

The 14 points was a season low for Wall, which entered the game unbeaten and averaging nearly 50 points per game.

Cameron Yoe finished the season 15-1.

Division II: Cisco 56, Refugio 36In a rematch of the 2011 Class 2A Division II title

game, Cisco got revenge on Refugio to claim the title at AT&T Stadium.

Cisco led 28-21 at the break and broke the game open in the third by outscoring the Bobcats 28-7 en

route to the title.Cisco’s Colton Kent rushed for 139 yards and two

scores and threw for 218 yards and three scores en route to Offensive MVP honors.

Cisco polished off a 16-0 campaign with the win.

ConferenCe 1A Division I: Stamford 41, Shiner 28

Bo knew how to win for Stamford.Quarterback Bo Wimberly led the Bulldogs to a

second straight state title with a title-game victory over Shiner at AT&T Stadium.

Wimberly won both the Offensive and Defensive MVP awards in the game. He threw for 252 yards, rushed for 115 yards, scored five touchdowns and recorded nine tackles for the Bulldogs.

Shiner raced out to a 28-7 lead, but Wimberly’s 1-yard scoring dive in the third quarter ignited a run of 34 unanswered points that carried Stamford to the win.

Stamford finished the season 14-1.

Division II: Wellington 42, Falls City 20Wellington fell behind early but took off after that

en route to its first state championship with a win over Falls City at AT&T Stadium.

The Beavers struck first for a 6-0 lead, but the Skyrockets rattled off 42 unanswered after that to roll to the title.

Terry Gilbreath rushed for 185 yards and three scores for Wellington in picking up Offensive MVP honors.

Wellington finished 14-0 with the victory.

Welcome to South Texas, Jeff Doege. The third coach in four years at Pettus, Doege brings his spread offense to Bee County after three years as the head

coach at Thrall. He will have plenty of returnees to help in the transition. Backfield battery mates Matt Gonzales and Orlando Rangel will lead Doege’s new offensive scheme. Gonzales will call the signals for the Eagles, while Rangel will get the bulk of the work in the ground game as the starting tailback. Gonzales will have a litany of weapons in the passing game: Inside receivers include Kyle Camden, Justin Chandler and Zack Linville; outside receivers include Alan Bridge, Nick Coester, Jesse Gutierrez and Jonathan Solomon. The offensive line, anchored by Abraham Arias, Samuel Cano and Warren Lindeman, also returns intact. Defensively, Lindeman will be the leader. He led the team in tackles last season and will start at linebacker yet again. The Eagles have missed the playoffs each of the past two seasons, going 0-10 and 4-6, respectively. They last reached the postseason in 2011.

call the signals for the Eagles for the second straight year. This year, though, he will be called upon to throw it in the new offense that coach Jeff Doege has installed. He’s big, and he has the ability to throw it on the run. If he picks things up quickly, he could be in line to put up big numbers.

wArren linDemAnLindeman is exactly the kind of football player you want on your team. He will start on the offensive line and will lead the linebacking corps on the defensive side. He led the team in tackles a year ago and figures to repeat that this year. He’s got a “great nose for the football,” according to coach Jeff Doege.

Seasoning. That’s one of the few positives a coach can take from a win-less season. Skidmore-Tynan got plenty of that last year in coach John Livas’ first season

at the helm. That experience should benefit the Bobcats, who return all 22 starters from last year’s team. The best of that bunch are senior running backs Andrew Casarez and Ryan Lakso. That duo will get the bulk of the work in the slot-T offense that Livas installed a year ago. Junior Wyatt Scott will be responsible for getting the Bobcats’ corps of running backs the ball as the starting signal caller. In addition to Casarez and Lakso, Alex Rocha and Elijah Holifield should get some carries. Up front, five seniors will start – Alex Acosta, Jake Benavides, Kyle Gabbert, Ryan Jimenez and David Reyna. Charles Allard and T.J. Amador highlight the returnees on defense. Lakso and Scott will also be leaders on the defensive side. The slot-T isn’t designed to light up the scoreboard, which is why the Bobcats’ defense will have to improve on the 45.7 points-per-game allowed average it posted in 2013.

The defending Conference 1A Division II state runners-up have high expectations for 2014 despite losing a litany of key players, including Dean Gaskamp

and Justin Twine. Zach Jimerson is in line to take over for Gaskamp as the Beavers’ starting quarterback, and Joseph Swierc is in line to replace Twine as the starting running back. Jimerson saw limited time under center last year, but did throw for 431 yards and eight touchdowns. Swierc was in the starting lineup a year ago, but didn’t get many touches because of the plethora of playmakers on the field for the Beavers. He played in 14 of the team’s 15 games, rushing for 205 yards and two scores and catching two passes for 38 yards and a score. With a change to a more ground-oriented attack, Swierc should get plenty of carries. With three starters returning, the offensive line, anchored by all-state selection William Stolle, should be the strength of the team.

The Badgers have nearly everyone back in 2014. Ten starters return on the offensive side, while all 11 are back on the defensive side. Running back Paul Kinney

will be the Badgers’ do-it-all man this year after, posting 995 yards and 14 touchdowns in the ground game during his junior campaign. He also returned two punts and a kickoff for TDs in 2013 and led the team in interceptions with six. Quarterback Dylan Wright is a dangerous weapon as well. He was second to Kinney in rushing yards last year with 820, while throwing for 230 yards and two scores in the Badgers’ run-heavy offense. He was also the team’s leading tackler with 87. Chayse Leal and Jacob Janysek will help Wright on the defensive side. Leal is coming off a junior year that saw him record 75 tackles, including seven sacks. Janysek had 57 tackles for the Badgers in 2013. Sophomore Caleb Beaver figures to join Wright, Janysek and Ty Burson as a starter at linebacker, a corps that should help Karnes City improve on the 22.6 points per game it gave up last season.

primary weapon in the offensive backfield and will fill a starting slot in the defensive secondary. Coach Jim Wood called him “fast and athletic” and says that he will rarely leave the field. In addition to his role as a tailback and free safety, he will also return punts and kicks for the Badgers.

DylAn WrightWright enters his

second season as the starting signal caller and a linebacker for the Badgers in 2014. He was second on the team to Kinney in rushing yards and led the team in tackles. He, along with Kinney, are the team’s vocal leaders, according to coach Jim Wood.

With seven starters returning on both sides of the ball from a team that went to the area finals in 2013, the expectations are high for the Kenedy Lions in 2014.

The most notable of those returnees is senior quarterback Dominic Cruz. Cruz threw for 1,079 yards and 11 touchdowns last year, while also finishing second on the team in rushing yards with 498 to go with seven TDs. As the Lions try to find a replacement for Cedric Mejia, who ran for 1,266 yards and 13 scores last year, Cruz will be the main option in the offense. The aerial part of the offense will be a strong suit with Jacob Asebedo, Seferino Villarreal and Tony Aleman all back. The trio combined for 71 catches, 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2013. Jordan Valdez is back to lead the defense after pacing the team in tackles last year. Valdez, Asebedo and Aleman, the team’s top three leading tacklers, had a combined 182 tackles last year. Valdez will also anchor an offensive line that paved the way for the Lions to average 221.2 rushing yards per game in 2013.

a huge role in the offense in 2014. He was second on the team in rushing yards last year but could get the call to carry it more this year, as the Lions sort out the situation at running back. He also will be a key contributor on the defensive side as a starter in the secondary.

JorDAn vAlDezValdez led the

team in tackles a year ago as a starting linebacker, a spot he will occupy again in 2014. He also will help pave the way for the Lions’ rushing attack as a starter in the trenches. Coach Lin Havron says he does a good job of keeping the attitude positive and his teammates motivated.

Jeric Esparza is going to play a huge role on both sides of the football for the Yellowjackets in 2014. He will start at quarterback for the second straight season, a year

after rushing for 912 yards and a team-best 19 touchdowns on 174 carries. He also threw for 253 yards and four TDs in limited passing opportunities out of Runge’s slot-T offense. He also led the team in interceptions with two and was third on the team in tackles with 48 coming from his spot at strong safety, where he has started since his freshman campaign. Fullback Aaron Charles is also back after rushing for 704 yards and five touchdowns last season. Replacing Corey Barnes, who rushed for 1,047 yards and eight scores in 2013, is the lone major question for Runge’s offense. Defensively, two of the team’s top three tacklers are back in Esparza and Michael Rios. Rios recorded 56 tackles to lead the Yellowjackets in 2013. Rios also will start up front on the offensive side, anchoring a line that helped Runge rush for 3,402 yards and 37 touchdowns.

Playoffs are the expectation in George West in 2014. A year removed from missing the playoffs for the first time in nearly a decade, the Longhorns have the parts

to return to the postseason. Quarterback Hunter Brown will be the full-time starter this season. He started every game last year as a freshman, including five under center. He has the physical traits to be great. The question will be whether the mental aspect progresses this year. He has plenty of weapons to work with, including Wyatt Wasicek. The 6-foot-4 senior wideout gives Brown a big weapon on the edge and should help facilitate a change in the Longhorns’ otherwise run-heavy offense. The offensive line is the biggest question mark for the Longhorns heading into Friday’s season opener. Season-ending injuries to running back Hunter Pipkin and defensive back Mason Moore have hurt. The Longhorns figure to be in the mix for a playoff spot come season’s end, but with Hallettsville and Goliad now in the district, a third-place battle with Mathis seems to be the likeliest of scenarios.

— outlook —

Three Rivers missed the playoffs for the first time under Randy Palmer last season, something that isn’t sitting well with the 2014 Bulldogs. District realignment was

kind to Three Rivers, which should put them in a position to return to the playoffs this year. Marcos Cruz will run the offense early in the season as Jesse Perez recovers from an injury sustained during the preseason. Whoever is under center, their job is to get the ball into the hands of Paul Almandarez. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound junior has rushed for more than 1,500 yards in two seasons in Randy Palmer’s slot-T offense and might be in the hunt to more than double that this year. Weston Huff and Juan Rivera will get some carries as well, as will Cruz after Perez returns to the field. The offensive line, anchored by Dustin Terry and Shane Edens, is experienced, but not overly big. Huff will lead the defense, a unit that allowed 25 points per contest last season. The last time the Bulldogs missed the playoffs, in 2007, they responded by winning nine games the next year.

returning tackler for the Bulldogs and should be near the top of that category again this year. He has a good nose for the football and always seems to find himself near the ball carrier. On the offensive side, he will contribute as a running back in Three Rivers’ version of the slot-T offense.

Dustin terryTerry has spent

the offseason getting better, which should bode well for the running backs who will carry the ball behind him. He will anchor the offensive line, and he should also contribute on the defensive line. He’s physical and strong, two important attributes for an offensive lineman in the slot-T.

Statewide PreP Football PreviewThe 2014 high school football regular

season officially kicks off on Aug. 28 at 4:30 p.m. when Midland Lee hosts

Keller at Grande Communications Stadium in Midland.

When the ball goes in the air for the first time in that game, it will mark a new era of Texas prep football.

Let’s take a closer look at every level in the state:

ConferenCe 6AFor the first time, Texas has a 6A classifi-

cation. It’s in name only, though. What was 5A in 2013 is now 6A, making room for six-man football to become the 1A classification.

And just like in 2013, the Allen Eagles are the betting favorites to win the state’s big-school class.

Allen is the state’s largest school and has won two straight 5A Division I state titles.

The road to a third straight title will go directly through some of the country’s best programs.

Cedar Hill, the reigning 5A Division II champion, is ranked No. 1 in the nation in the preseason MaxPreps Xcellent 25.

Allen is No. 2 in those rankings.Katy, which lost to Cedar Hill in the

5A Division II title game a year ago, is ranked 12th nationally and second in both the Associated Press and Dave Campbell’s Texas Football (DCTF) rankings.

DeSoto, Carroll, Trinity (Euless), Steele, Guyer, Lake Travis and North Shore also figure to make deep playoff runs in 2014.

Like 5A in 2013, the road through the play-offs comes down to the enrollment numbers.

Each district will send four teams to the play-offs, with the two largest going into Division I and the two smallest going into Division II.

ConferenCe 5AAledo’s offense was nearly unstoppable in

2013, posting a national prep record 1,023 points during an unblemished 16-0 run to the 4A Division II title.

Aledo has won four titles in five years, all at the Division II level of what was then 4A.

With realignment, Aledo is likely to end up in Division I this year, which would make the road to another title significantly more difficult.

A&M Consolidated is No. 2 in the DCTF rankings and fourth in the preseason AP poll.

Ennis is No. 2 in the AP poll and fourth in the DCTF rankings.

Longview is third in both.Cedar Park, Temple and Brenham should

also be in the mix when playoff time rolls around.

ConferenCe 4ADivision I – Stephenville, with 10 starters

back, including its quarterback and leading rusher, is the odds-on favorite to win the title.

Carthage and Argyle, which won the 3A Division I and Division II titles, respectively, last season are in the same class this sea-son.

Kilgore, which fell to Carthage in the title game, is also in the class.

Navasoto and Graham have 15 and 14 starters back, respectively, and expect to be in the hunt for a title at the end of the season.

Division II – This could be one of the most

intriguing divisions in the state when it’s all said and done.

La Marque sits atop the DCTF rankings, but eight-time state champion Celina is only two spots back in third.

Celina has 15 starters back, including nine on the offensive side of the ball.

La Marque has a plethora of running backs that will help fuel its fast-paced ground game.

West Orange-Stark, Gilmer, La Grange and Sinton could make deep playoff runs and could be in the mix to win it all come season’s end.

ConferenCe 3ADivision I – The top of the division is

loaded with talented teams that are poised to make deep runs.

Hallettsville, despite losing its two-year starting quarterback to transfer, sits atop the DCTF rankings after going 13-1 a year ago.

Defending 2A Division I Cameron Yoe has just six starters back but still looks like a contender.

Wall, which fell to Cameron Yoe in the title game, is fifth. New Boston, Rockdale, Lago Vista and Teague also look like contenders.

Division II – Defending 2A Division II champion Cisco is second in the DCTF rank-ings, but first in the combined 3A AP poll.

Waskom looks strong as the No. 1 team in the DCTF rankings. Newton, Franklin and Rogers also look strong.

Gunter returns 18 starters from a team that went 9-3 a season ago.

ConferenCe 2ADivision I – Refugio has 14 starters back

from a team that lost a shootout to Cisco in the 2A Division II title game last season. The Bobcats are ranked No. 1 in the AP poll and second in the DCTF rankings.

Mart is a close second in the AP poll and sits atop the DCTF rankings.

Canadian, Hico, Centerville and Shiner all look poised for deep postseason runs.

Division II – Tenaha checks in at No. 3 in the AP poll and sits atop the Division II DCTF rankings.

Albany and Bremond also look strong.Falls City is fourth in the DCTF rankings

and third in the coaches poll despite returning just seven starters.

ConferenCe 1ADivision I – Crowell is the team to beat.

The Wildcats are the defending state cham-pions and return five of six starters on both sides of the ball.

Ira and Abbott each have nine starters back and are No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, in the DCTF rankings.

Strawn, which moved up from Division II this year, could be a contender as well.

Division II – This is a division that is top heavy with teams that are all capable of win-ning the title.

Richland Springs is No. 1 in the DCTF rankings to start the year, but Calvert and Motley County are both legitimate threats.

Throckmorton, Paducah and Jayton could also be threats in December.

The first question to ask when you start talking

about the Roadrunners is simple: Who is going to take over for for-mer Beeville standout Eric Soza?

That’s the question because UTSA has nearly everyone else coming back for another season, its first as a full-fledged member of the FBS.

OFFENSE Tucker Carter, an Allen product and the 2011 Southwest Junior College Football Conference Offensive Player of the Year, will get the nod as Soza’s replacement. He completed just 23 passes for 190 yards in mop-up duty last season.

Every other 2013 offensive starter is back for another year, including wideouts Kam Jones and Brandon Freeman and tail-back David Glasco II.

The Roadrunners’ offensive line features four multi-year starters, including center Nate Leonard, left guard Scott Inskeep and left tackle Cody Harris, all three of whom have been around since the program’s inception in

2009.In 2013, UTSA’s big uglies

were called for exactly zero hold-ing penalties.

DEFENSE Nine starters return in the Roadrunners’ 4-3 defense.

Three of the starters up front – Cody Rogers, Richard Burge and Ashaad Mabry – are multi-year starters.

Nic Johnston and Triston Wade are both back for another year and form the core of UTSA’s secondary at strong safety and free safety, respectively.

incarnaTe wordCaRdinals

Fresh off the first winning season in program history,

the Cardinals are ready to take on a full Southland Conference schedule.

Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams, now 36, will once again serve as an assistant for the Cardinals, while also working for the Longhorn Network.

OFFENSE Trent Brittain turned in a solid campaign in his first year as the starter last year

and is expected to be the team’s offensive leader this season.

He threw for 1,893 yards and 11 TDs in 2013.

Brittain’s two main weapons, wideout Casey Jennings and running back Broderick Reeves, headline an offense that features 10 returning starters.

Jennings led a solid corps of receivers with 738 yards and five scores. Reeves was tops on the team in rushing yards with 616 to go with 11 TDs.

DEFENSE Safety Brandon Tanksley, who had a team-lead-ing 58 tackles a year ago, high-lights a defense that has seven starters returning.

Nick Ginn (41 tackles) will anchor the linebacking corps for the Cardinals in 2014.

TaMU-KingSvilleJavelinas

Question marks are about the only constant for

Kingsville this season. The lone offensive star, wide-

out Robert Armstrong, is gone from a team that was last in the

Lone Star Conference in scoring and total offense.

OFFENSE The questions start at quarterback. Caleb Bedford started the last seven games of the year in 2013, throwing for 1,117 yards and seven scores.

But, Alex Rios, who started the first two games of the year, and Trey Mitchell are also in the running to be named the starting signal caller.

The backfield will feature a trio of transfers – Joe Teo, Shawn Vasquez and Bobby Huey.

DEFENSE The defense has fewer question marks.

Eleven of the team’s top 15 tacklers are back this year, a group highlighted by lineback-ers Brandon James and Mark Savere.

Defensive backs Anthony Forker and Lamont Hills are also back for another season.

The defensive line lost three starters, but a pair of transfers – Sione Tupouata and Augafa Vaaulu – should fill two of those holes.

Nate Kowalik’s arrival in Goliad has the Tiger faithful thinking about a playoff run similar to the one Kowalik engineered in 2013 at Hallettsville. The 5-foot-11

signal caller took the Brahmas to the state quarterfinals and figures to have the Tigers in a position to possibly match that. He threw for 3,529 yards and 41 touchdowns on 222-of-366 passing last season and threw just seven picks. The main concern for the Tigers is the depth. If summer 7-on-7 work is any indication, Goliad’s offense looks good. The Tigers made the state tournament for the first time this summer. Senior Justin Thomas, and juniors Desmond Perry and Mac Wimberly, give Kowalik some targets in the passing game. Ty Ross and Joseph Burns both figure to factor in the rushing attack. Last year’s win over Santa Rosa in bi-district was the first playoff victory for the program since 1997. The key game of the year is Oct. 10, when Kowalik’s former school, Hallettsville, which is ranked No. 2 in the preseason AP poll, visits the Tiger Stadium for a District 15-3A Division I showdown with Goliad.

2014 NFL SeaSoN PreviewNo offense to basketball, baseball,

lacrosse or (insert your favorite sport here), but there is nothing better than the start of the NFL season.

Unlike being a fan of the Cubbies or 76ers, at the start of every sea-son, every fan has a realistic belief that their favorite team can make the playoffs.

Don’t believe me?For the past 24 seasons, at least

four teams made the playoffs the year after missing out on the postseason the year before.

The trick to predicting an NFL sea-son is figuring out which teams will fall from grace (Atlanta and Houston from 2013 for example) and which will rise to prominence (San Diego and Kansas City last year).

Enjoy the preview and the upcom-ing football season!

AFC EAst

1 New England Patriots – So long as Tom Brady and Bill Belichick

are together, the Patriots will be the team to beat in this division. The real question is can they win the big one without cheating? Not this year.

2 Buffalo Bills* – This is not me being a homer. The Bills’

defense and skill position players are

playoff-worthy. E.J. Manuel will make or break the Bills’ season. He will do enough to end Buffalo’s playoff drought.

3 Miami Dolphins – Miami has the potential to be a playoff

team, but a terrible running game – and offensive line – will drag down a top-notch defense and passing game.

4 New York Jets – This is the year that the wheels fall off for

Rex’s bunch. Geno Smith will fall on his face and a porous secondary will get torched all season, leading to Ryan’s departure from the Big Apple.

AFC North

1 Cleveland Browns – This is easily the most “out there” pick

of this preview, but my gut tells me this is the year the Browns offense comes together to help an underrated defense.

2 Cincinnati Bengals* – This may be a blessing in disguise for the

Bengals. The pressure is on to win a playoff game this year, not just make

it. A wild-card spot will allow Andy Dalton and company to fly under the radar in January.

3 Pittsburgh Steelers – After just missing out on the playoffs in

2013, the Steelers will once again be on the outside looking in 2014.

4 Baltimore Ravens – Quite a fall from grace for a team that won the

Super Bowl two years ago. Joe Flacco will continue to give his naysayers ammunition as he struggles mightily.

AFC south

1 Indianapolis Colts – The Colts could have the division locked

up by Thanksgiving in the weakest division in football. Andrew Luck will cement himself as a top-five quarter-back with a stellar season.

2 Jacksonville Jaguars – Don’t look now, but the Jaguars are

slowly becoming a quality team. The Jaguars will have their struggles early, but by the end of 2014, they will make people think of them in the playoffs in 2015.

3 Houston Texans – When a team is relying on Ryan Fitzpatrick at

quarterback at the start of a season, that is not a good thing. At least Clowney should be fun to watch.

4 Tennessee Titans – Does any-one actually believe that Jake

Locker can stay healthy? I don’t. Locker will miss half the season, and the Titans will be in the running for the No. 1 pick in the 2015 draft.

AFC WEst

1 Denver Broncos – Peyton Manning is still the quarterback

for Denver. Enough said.

2 San Diego Chargers – Phillip Rivers will continue the resur-

rection of his career, but the Chargers will fall short of their second straight wild-card berth.

3 Kansas City Chiefs – The Chiefs over-achieved in Andy

Reid’s first season as the Kool-Aid man, but they will be in for a hard fall back to earth in 2014.

4 Oakland Raiders – The Raiders acquired a lot of big names in

the offseason (Jones-Drew, Tuck, Woodley, Schaub), but will still stink up the joint.

NFC East

1 Dallas Cowboys – For the fourth consecutive season, the

Cowboys will play for the division title in Week 17. Unlike the past three sea-sons, they will actually show up and win the game.

2 Washington Redskins – Considering the Cowboys’ last

game of the past three seasons was for the division title, Washington gets this slot simply because they play Dallas Week 17.

3 Philadelphia Eagles – Nick Foles burst onto the scene last

year and led his team to the NFC East title. Don’t count on that type of play this season.

4 New York Giants – Eli Manning had 27 interceptions last year

and, from what I’ve seen in the pre-season, I am completely confident that he can crack the 30 INT plateau.

NFC North

1 Chicago Bears – The high-octane Bears offense and an

adequate defense will bring the divi-sion title back to the Windy City.

2 Green Bay Packers* – Aaron Rodgers will have the Packers

back in the postseason, but losses to Chicago will cost them the division.

3 Detroit Lions – I am not a believer in Matthew Stafford. He

can put up numbers, sure, but he has proven time and again, he can’t win.

4 Minnesota Vikings – He may not start the season, but the

Vikings will get a good look at Teddy Bridgewater in the final quarter of the season.

NFC south

1 New Orleans Saints – This divi-sion will boil down to this – Drew

Brees is the best quarterback in the division. That is enough to win it.

2 Atlanta Falcons – The Falcons aren’t as bad as they played last

year. Unfortunately for Atlanta fans, they aren’t as good as they were in 2012 either.

3 Carolina Panthers – Can any-one name two WRs on the

Carolina roster? Luke Kuechly and the Panther defense will have to carry this team in 2014.

4 Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Josh McCown had the season of his

life in 2013, in place of Jay Cutler. He will play like his life before 2013 this year, which is to say, mediocre.

NFC WEst

1 Seattle Seahawks – Richard Sherman and the rest of the

LOB won’t allow Seattle to have a Super Bowl hangover.

2 Arizona Cardinals* – After missing out on the postseason

last year with 10 wins, the Cardinals make the tournament this season with the same number of wins.

3 San Francisco 49ers – For the first time in Jim Harbaugh’s ten-

ure, the 49ers will miss the playoffs. They will win 10 games, but will find out how the Cardinals felt last year.

4 St. Louis Rams – You have to feel for Sam Bradford. His sec-

ond ACL injury in as many years will derail what was shaping up to be a promising season for the Rams.
