Essential Question• What’s behind women taking over male

dominant jobs, while they are still being stereotyped, and why is there a pay gap related to the gender of males and females? – Women are the new men and are taking over

what used to be male dominant workplaces– Even though women are occupying male jobs,

there is a pay gap between males and females

Development Early On• Not the first time women have occupied male

jobs– World War II• Factory jobs• Typical male jobs being filled by females

• Start women’s right’s movement – Gained the right to vote in 1920’s

• No longer going to be mistreated, going to make a change in social normality

Women’s Employment• In 2012 the workforce was made up of 53.7%

women– Women have 8% unemployment rate– Five million still stay at home moms

• Starting to outnumber males to college– For every two males who receive a bachelor’s

degree, three females receive the same degree – graduating degree rate of 135 females to 100 males

Female Postal Workers

• Between 2000 to 2010• 50,000 males lost their jobs• 13,000 females filled their positions – Females make up 40% of postal service

• Decline of 8% in male employment

• Manage day-to-day activities• 54,000 females have been added to the

education parole in past decade • Decline of 11.6% in male employment

Female Tax Examiners

• In 2009, made up almost 70% of all employees• 15,000 males lost their jobs• 27,000 filled their positions• Decline of 19.7% in male employment– Expected to double in next decade

Female Veterinarians

• Number one job females are taking over• Men are now the minority of the workforce• 10,000 males lost their jobs• 23,000 females filled their positions• Decline of 25.7% in male employment

Women Changing the Economy • Women are breaking what was socially

normality and dominating traditional male occupations

• According the experts, women will soon be the majority of the workforce in the upcoming years

Reasons why Females are Taking Over

• Recession • 82% of job loss during recession was males

not females– Especially manufacturing and construction

• Females are also dominated jobs that used to be done at home

• Better qualities and skills that males just don’t have

• New economy – Based on skills and education not manufacturing

What is the Pay Gap?

• A pay gap is the difference in pay between two groups (males and females)

• Current pay gap – 77 cents for every dollar earned – Females only earn 77% of what a male earns

Conclusion• Women are taking over traditional male

dominant workplaces, however, statistics show they are receiving less pay compared to their male counterparts.

• The trend for women’s equality is not going to disappear anytime soon, it is going to increase in the coming years.

• Females are becoming the head of the family
