Essential Question• What’s behind women taking over male
dominant jobs, while they are still being stereotyped, and why is there a pay gap related to the gender of males and females? – Women are the new men and are taking over
what used to be male dominant workplaces– Even though women are occupying male jobs,
there is a pay gap between males and females
Stereotypes in the societyMales • Head of the house• Hard, physical labor• Far from home,
traveling• Outdoors
Females• Stay at home• Cook, clean• Take care of
children • Unable to do
physical demanding jobs
Development Early On• Not the first time women have occupied male
jobs– World War II• Factory jobs• Typical male jobs being filled by females
• Start women’s right’s movement – Gained the right to vote in 1920’s
• No longer going to be mistreated, going to make a change in social normality
Women’s Employment• In 2012 the workforce was made up of 53.7%
women– Women have 8% unemployment rate– Five million still stay at home moms
• Starting to outnumber males to college– For every two males who receive a bachelor’s
degree, three females receive the same degree – graduating degree rate of 135 females to 100 males

• Decline of 8% in male employment

education parole in past decade • Decline of 11.6% in male employment

Female Veterinarians
• Number one job females are taking over• Men are now the minority of the workforce• 10,000 males lost their jobs• 23,000 females filled their positions• Decline of 25.7% in male employment
Women Changing the Economy • Women are breaking what was socially
normality and dominating traditional male occupations
• According the experts, women will soon be the majority of the workforce in the upcoming years
• Role models for young women and girls
Reasons why Females are Taking Over
• Recession • 82% of job loss during recession was males
not females– Especially manufacturing and construction
• Females are also dominated jobs that used to be done at home
• Better qualities and skills that males just don’t have
• New economy – Based on skills and education not manufacturing
What is the Pay Gap?
• A pay gap is the difference in pay between two groups (males and females)
• Current pay gap – 77 cents for every dollar earned – Females only earn 77% of what a male earns
Yearly Wage for Male and FemaleMale – $49, 398Female – $37, 791
Reasons for Pay Gap• Discrimination • Higher vs. lower pay job• Part-time or full-time job• Amount of hours work in a week/year• How labor demanding is the job• Experience and education level• Time with company • Individual differences• No health insurance (females)
Gender Pay Gap
A movement has been started
• Equal Pay Act of 1963• Equal Pay Day each year• Barack Obama – Equal Pay Bill– Addressed in his State of the Union Speech
• Both males and females are standing up for women’s rights
Women Making a Change
• Barack Obama • Michelle Obama • Hillary Clinton • Supreme Court Justices
Conclusion• Women are taking over traditional male
dominant workplaces, however, statistics show they are receiving less pay compared to their male counterparts.
• The trend for women’s equality is not going to disappear anytime soon, it is going to increase in the coming years.
• Females are becoming the head of the family
