JUST A FEW WORDS. . . from the club president

I awoke this morning, March 12th to see the yard dusted with snow. This in South Carolina could be called a snow storm, not a blizzard which to us Carolina natives is more than an inch. Teresa was talking about how pretty it was but reminded me we were out of milk. I think that the fact that snow, milk, and bread are all white they are somehow connected. Well off we go and fortunately we have a front wheel drive vehicle so we can make it in this

treacherous weather. Along the way, Teresa mentions that we should have brunch since we were already out.

While we were eating, Teresa asked me what was going on with the club. I started telling her and was amazed at how many positive things are going on. Some of the following came to mind:

Wednesday night carve-ins are well attended. People are bringing refreshments, helping others carve, and having a lot of fun.

Jim Woods has started a project where we start a new type of carving at our monthly meeting on Saturday. Someone agrees to be there the following Wednesday nights to help answer questions and give assistance. Charlie Arnold started this idea in January when he carved a doughnut. This was important to our new carvers as this project would help them understand the importance of grain recognition.

In February, Dave Fisher taught the Angels of Hope.

This month Buddy Amos was going to teach a chip carving class. Buddy has been down with the flu and was unable to get ready so Pete Erbskorm is going to teach a caricature toothpick holder, I think a Santa face. Pete has geared his class for beginners and can only effectively teach 6 people per class and unfortunately already has 7 people signed up.

    JUST A FEW WORDS. . .

    continued from page 2

Dave Fisher has put us on Facebook and weve been getting likes from all across the country. If you are not on Facebook, you should join or look us up on someone elses page. Additionally Dave has set up our account so anyone can post so the next time you finish a carving, take a picture and post it. Other people would love to see your carving.

This year we have established a committee to work on the show. Were making a lot of changes and my goal was to have everything completed this week but it looks like its going to take a little longer to get the kinks ironed out. As I previously stated, we are involved in the Angels of Hope project. Dave Fisher did a great job explaining it at Februarys meeting and I have observed a lot of people working on Angels at Wednesdays carve-ins. Dave Sikkelee carved one for a friend of his who is in the Veterans home in Anderson. Dave said when he gave it to him he held onto it during the entire visit. Larry Lawing also puts his name, branch of service, and Viet Nam on his Angels so when he gives one to Veterans they will know it was carved by a Veteran. We are giving the blanks free so if you can donate some wood or be willing to cut out some see Jim Woods or Dave Fisher.

As you can see we have a lot going on so we hope to see you every Wednesday night and each third Saturday morning of the month.

And as John Moore says Well keep the coffee pot on for you.

    From Dave Sikkelee

Many of you know Roger McGrady, Who visited with me at the clubhouse and also many of the picnics! He is now at the Richard Campbell veterans home in Anderson. I carved Him an Angel and gave it to him Sunday and he was still holding onto it when I left!

    Great job Dave!

    CLUB PROJECT BEGINNING IN APRIL

Dick Card will be teaching relief carving at the April meeting. I'm attaching a picture of the relief carving he will be teaching. The Club will sell the wood to those who can not obtain it on their own but the club will have to know how much to buy so people will have to sign up for that class. The size needed for the relief carving will be 8 1/2 x 11 x 1 1/4 (8 and a half by 11 by inch an a quarter). This is an easy beginner relief carving.
