THE PIEDMONT CARVER

Our carvers are a special sharing kind of people. And so is our show. Our show is for everyone. Carvings shown at our show fit into 2 board groupings, competition and exhibition Competitive carvings are placed into 4 classes based on carver’s experience. (Youth, Novice/Beginner, Inter-mediate and Open). There are 33 categories, where competitive carvings are grouped together in like styles or construction. The carvings shown in the competition provide an amazing diversity of wood carving artistry. This is an oppor-tunity for wood carvers, of all skill levels, to share our collective art. As a group of artisans we benefit at the show by the fellowship of carvers and are able to serve the community by building interest and broader understanding of artistry in wood. We have highly qualified judges who award ribbons for 1st,2nd and 3th place in each category. Awarding ribbons promotes skill development and excellence. However, the celebration of the art of wood carving is advanced through the diversity of the entire collection of all entries in each category. To that end we have added awards for ‘People’s choice’, ‘Most number of carvings entered’ and a mail-in service to ease the burden of travel for our out of town carvers. Exhibition at the PWCC show comes in the form of a carver’s table. Carver’s may reserve a table to display/sell wood carvings, demonstrate wood carving process, or promote wood carving organizations. etc. Exhibition tables are a great method to share carvings that may not qualify for competition and/or demonstrate an individu-al’s carver’s collection/history of carvings. Tables are separated from the competition area and provide another avenue for promoting the art of wood carving. Show attendees’ benefit from these exhibition’s by having the abil-ity to meet individual artists, to view additional carvings or purchase original art. A ‘best dressed table’ award will be given to the exhibition table with the best presentation.

The club’s mission and by-laws set the requirement that the club must have a show each year. But the actual reason to have a show is obvious after sharing the uplifting experience with so many wonderful carvers. The real reason to have a show may include: Seeing the creations of old friends, meeting new friends, exploring carvings that will amaze and inspire you. Come to the show to learn new skills, buy a new tool, or stock up on wood. To enjoy sitting around carving with friends, networking with other carvers from other regions. To share your carv-ings with peers and our community.

We all share the sense of pride when we uphold our opportunity and responsibility to promote the art of wood carving.

So, there is a place for every carver to participate in our show. The more folks that participate, more fun we all have. In the coming weeks and months, we will be finalizing the show activities and will be looking for individu-als to fill a number of tasks that make our show memorable. Please enter carvings into the competition. Consider an exhibit table and volunteer for show tasks. On August 25 will be our club picnic at McPherson park. There are Southern Basswood trees at the park. To see them take the path starting at the restrooms. Cross over the creek using the bridge. On the other side of the creek you will find Basswood trees. Look for the heart-shaped leaves grown in an alternating pattern on branches with small, saw-like teeth along the perimeter. I was amazed at the size of the mature leaves, larger than my out stretched hand, about the size of dinner plates.

Keep Smiling and Keep Carving!

Dave

THE PIEDMONT CARVER

PWCC is planning a distribution in August, so turn in your Angels. The next large distribution will be after the show in November.

Keep up the good work!

Remember in the club room, on the back shelf ( behind the curtain) is a plas-tic tub to place completed Angels or Angels you have carved and would like them sanded/varnished.

Also, there are additional Angel cutouts in the box on the shelf. Please help yourself.

Below some recent Angels of Hope carved by Jim Hartwig. Beautiful Jim, well done.

Touch a life and keep carving :)

THE PIEDMONT CARVER

There are several nice Wednesday Carve-In Classes being offered by members coming up as well as instruction on bagels and pencils at the August meeting. Charlie Arnold will be teaching the art of wood carving on a wooden pencil as well as the art of carving a good- looking bagel. Sign up sheets are available on the board at the club room.

At the show there is a $50.00 prize for the best looking bagel; Charlie will be using a smaller version of the bagel than will be used at the contest at our November show because of limited time.

At the Wednesday carve-ins, August 15th Lila will start her little gourd ornament and once again she will continue to help anyone interested and still doing the dove. Sign up if you can so Lila can have enough gourds for everyone.

The rest of August is set aside for regular carve-ins and help from anyone who has started a project with Lila or Buddy. And of course, we all have to remember to do the "Angels of Hope", and anything you are working on for the November show or for your self satisfaction.

At the Wednesday carve in on September 5th, Gay Greer will do a demonstration on how to dress up your table for the show; good hints if you would like to try for that $75.00 prize. Gay's demonstration will take place at 5:00 p.m. in the hall.

Watch the bulletin board for sign up sheets and we've also started a holder beside the bulletin board for Charlie Arnold's registration forms for upcoming outside in-structor classes; be sure to check out the bulletin board for the calendar as well as the white board.

Much is happening at our club; be a part of it!
