Sunday Bible Reflection by Dr. Scott Hahn

Today's Gospel portrays Jesus as a new and greater Moses. Moses also took three companions up a mountain and on the seventh day was overshadowed by the shining cloud of God's presence. He too spoke with God and his face and clothing were made radiant in the encounter (see Exodus 24,34). But in today's Lenten Liturgy, the Church wants us to look back past Moses. Indeed, we are asked to contemplate what today's Epistle calls God's "design...from before time began." With his promises to Abram in today's First Reading, God formed the people through whom He would reveal himself and bestow His blessings on all humanity. He later elevated these promises to eternal covenants and changed Abram's name to Abraham, promising that he would be father of a host nations (see Genesis 17:5). In remembrance of His covenant with Abraham he raised up Moses (see Exodus 2:24; 3:8), and later swore an everlasting kingdom to David 's sons (see Jeremiah 33:26). In Jesus' transfiguration today, He is revealed as the One through whom God fulfills his divine plan from of old. Not only a new Moses, Jesus is also the "beloved son" promised to Abraham and again to David (see Genesis 22:15-18; Psalm 2:7; Matthew 1:1). Moses foretold a prophet like him to whom Israel would listen (see Deuteronomy 18:15,18) and Isaiah foretold an anointed servant in whom God would be well- pleased (see Isaiah 42:1). Jesus is this prophet and this servant, as the Voice on the mountain tells us today. By faith we have been made children of the covenant with Abraham (see Galatians 3:7-9; Acts 3:25). He calls us, too, to a holy life, to follow His Son to the heavenly homeland He has promised. We know, as we sing in today's Psalm, that we who hope in Him will be delivered from death. we who hope in Him will be delivered from death. So like our father in faith, we go forth as the Lord directs us: "Listen to Him!"

2º DOMINGO DA QUARESMA

---Lenten Penance Service, Monday, March 13, 2017

at 7pm in the Church. For parents and children 3rd

grade - High School who have received their Holy

Communion.

2017 LENTEN REGULATIONS

*The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If Possible, the fast

on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on

Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the

suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare

ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more

readily His Resurrection. The other Fridays of Lent are

days of Abstinence. *On a day of Fast, only one (1) full

meal is permitted, and two (2) smaller meals, which, if

added together, would not exceed the main meal

quantity. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are

obliged to fast. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be

eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged

by the law of abstinence. *The obligation to observe the

laws of Fast and Abstinence “substantially”, or as a

whole, is a serious obligation. *The Fridays of the

year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance,

but each individual may substitute for the traditional

abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary

self-denial as penance. The time for fulfilling the

Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First

Sunday of Lent, March 5, 2017 to the Solemnity of the

Holy Trinity, June 11, 2017. **Canon 920, §1. All the

faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy

Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving

Communion at least once a year.

WEEKLY ADORATION DURING LENT

During the season of Lent we will have adoration of the Blessed Sacrament every Thursday beginning right after the 12 noon mass until 5 p.m. in the chapel. There will be a sign-up sheet outside the chapel every Thursday for those who wish to be responsible for keeping our Lord company. All are invited

and encouraged to come spend sometime with Our Lord truly present in the Eucharist. Make this Lent a time to grow closer to God.

LENTEN PENANCE SERVICE

Join us for our Lenten Penance on Mon-

day, March 13, 2017 at 7:00pm in the

Church. This is one of the best ways to

prepare for the Easter celebrations. It is

pleasing to God and it brings great peace

and healing to our souls.

OSCAR OMAR FERNANDEZ TO BE HONORED AS

CATECHIST OF THE YEAR

Oscar Omar Fernandez, a long time parishioner

of St. Cecilia’s Church in Kearny, will be

honored at the Knights of Columbus Council

#6928 40th Annual Shield Awards Dinner

Dance. The event will be held at St. Stephen’s

Hedges Hall on April 1, 2017 from 7pm – 11pm.

Join us in congratulating Omar. For ticket information to

this event, please contact Joe Reese at 201 997-9063.

Tickets will not be sold at the door.

ANNIVERSARY LITURGIES FOR CHRISTIAN MARRIAGES

The Archdiocese of Newark is once again preparing the

annual tradition of honoring those couples in the

Archdiocese who will be celebrating five, twenty-five and

fifty years of Christian marriage in the year 2017. These

anniversary liturgies will be celebrated by Cardinal Joseph

Tobin in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in

Newark as follows: April 30, 2017 at

3:00pm for 5 years and 25 years (All

counties) and May 7, 2017 at 3:00pm for

50 years (All Counties) The presence of a

large number of couples will give

favorable witness to the strength and

stability of Christian marriage in today’s

society.

BONDS OF MARIAN LOVE

The Bonds of Marian Love prayer group is

held in the chapel every Friday night from

7:30PM to 9:30PM For more information

about any of Bonds’ activities, please contact

Jonatan at (201) 726-6172 or Leonidas Aliaga

at (949) 354-1137. There will be a weekend

Retreat in Spanish on March 24, 25, 26 2017.

NO BAPTISMS DURING LENT

Because Lent is a time for all of us to think about our own baptism and to prepare to renew our baptismal promises on Easter, it is Church law that there are no baptisms celebrated during Lent. The next regularly scheduled baptism will be held in May.
