“By your perseverance you will secure your lives.” Jesus’ words at the end of today’s Gospel passage follow His sobering statement: “You will be hated by all because of my name, but not a hair of your head will be destroyed.” He is clear about the consequences of discipleship, even as He promises more effective security for His followers than what this world can offer. Through history, many have paid the ultimate price for fidelity to the Gospel—it is being demanded of many of our sisters and brothers in parts of the world today. Persecution is a recurring reality in Christian history—eloquent testimony to the power of the ‘threat’ posed by the teaching and example of Jesus, as reflected in the lives of His followers. We owe it to our present-day martyrs to show our solidarity with them by accepting the challenges of faithfulness to the Lord that we confront in the circumstances of our daily lives. The challenges to an integral living of our Christian identity are increasing in our aggressively secularist civil and cultural context: they present themselves in ways both subtle and direct. The production schedule for this Bulletin (the printing company requires early transmittal of our text due to Veterans’ Day) means that, as I write, the outcome of the presidential election is not known. I believe that, either way, the election results will mean growing unease for sincere Catholics (and many other citizens of good will) and forceful assertions of governmental power in contradiction of Church teaching on a wide array of issues. Jesus cautioned His disciples not to be deceived by false messiahs, but also not to be “terrified” by turmoil and persecution. He may have been predicting the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in A.D. 70, but His words have been applied to our expectation of the ‘End Time’. We do not resort to hand-wringing in the face of challenges, because we have the Lord’s assurance of His ultimate control over things. Rather we commit ourselves to remaining faithful, with God’s help, no matter what comes. Also as I write early Monday morning, confirmation has been received of the widely-rumored appointment of Cardinal-elect Joseph W. Tobin of Indianapolis as the Sixth Archbishop of Newark, succeeding retiring Archbishop John J. Myers. Our new shepherd will receive his ‘red hat’ on November 19 in Rome, at a consistory held as the Year of Mercy concludes. It is a distinct honor for the Archdiocese, among the ten largest in our country, to be headed by a cardinal: it means that the Church in New Jersey may have a voice, when the need may arise, in the conclave to elect Pope Francis’ successor. As we wish Archbishop Myers a blessed retirement, please join me in assuring Cardinal-elect Tobin of our prayerful support. Join me, too, in praying for our young people who will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation next weekend. May the Holy Spirit strengthen them as young disciples. God love you! Msgr. Tim Shugrue

Please Note: Beginning next weekend, November 19-20, The Little Blue Book, the Advent six-minute reflections booklet, will be located in the lobbies of the church. Please take one for your family.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK “...Rather, we wanted to present ourselves as a model for you, so that you might imitate us.” Most people who live a grateful and generous lifestyle don’t go around bragging about it. But through their actions and words, others do take notice. They notice because of the joy and peace

that results and other people desire this in their own life. Know that the way you live your life maybe the only interaction others have with the Catholic faith. MEMORIAL DONATIONS

We are accepting Memorial Donations for flowers for the Altar area, the Candles, Bread & Wine used for the Liturgies, and the weekly Sanctuary Candle. These items may be donated in memory of someone or to mark a

special occasion. A donation of $10 is suggested for the candles, bread & wine and sanctuary candle, and a donation of $40 is suggested for the weekly flowers. (MEMORIAL CARDS ARE AVAILABLE FOR THESE DONATIONS.) ALSO, as we face the need to replace various items for liturgical use, we are happy to arrange for memorials of deceased loved ones. Contact the Parish Office.

“LOOK AT ALL THE FOOD” - How often have we heard those words as we look at the abundance on our Thanks- giving Table? Many people lack food as well as a table to gather around. Please help Catholic Charities feed the hungry, as well as provide other corporal works of mercy, by donating to the clothing bin in St. Michael school yard.
