“O my people, I will open your graves...”

We all face the challenge of mortality. Human history is recorded in the monuments left by successive generations, many of them seeking to extend evidence of their mastery of their times. But their combined testimony is only a mute reminder of the longing in the human heart to live past the limits imposed by our vulnerability to age and decline. We seem instinctively to sense a contradiction: surely life was not meant to end so rudely; what happened, then, to result in the intrusion of mortality? Our Judeo-Christian tradition ascribes it to Original Sin, the rejection by our first parents of God’s plan for humanity’s future. Instead of accepting the gift they were offered, Man and Woman chose to believe a lie about their ‘right’ to lay greedy hands on the Tree of Life and on the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Their tragic choice was a measureless calamity, introducing chaos into the world and into their own experience of existence. But even as they were being expelled from Eden, they were given a promise of restoration someday to new and enduring life, through the obedience of a Savior. Meanwhile, they and their descendants would know the hollowness of temporal life, constantly seeking a fulfillment we know must be our destiny. The ultimate challenge to our dream of fulfillment is the grave, marking the limit of our hold on life.

Ezekiel the prophet knows the power of the symbolism of the grave, and gives voice to God’s determination to honor His promise by opening the graves of His People and calling them forth to breathe the spirit of new life. St. Paul today also speaks of the life that surpasses that of the flesh alone: alive in the righteousness of God, all in whom His Spirit dwells will know the transformation even of their mortal bodies. In the last of the ‘great signs’ related in John’s Gospel, Jesus raises His friend Lazarus from the tomb—proof, to all who are open to it, of the power of God in Jesus. Yet a miracle precedes that of the raising of Lazarus, when his grief-stricken sister Martha looks into the eyes of Jesus to consider what He has told her in re– defining life and death. “Do you believe this?”, Jesus asks her. I think Martha took some time before answering: What do I believe, knowing Jesus as I do—and knowing myself through my experience of His influence in my life? Finally, her answer: “Yes, Lord, I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of the God, the one who is coming into the world.” Martha does not say she understands, but tells Jesus she is willing to trust Him about the meaning of life and death. Martha does not need to see her brother raised: she has her miracle already, led by Jesus to a deeper understanding of where true life lies. We stand with Martha, first in her honest admission of hurt and puzzlement over her brother’s death, then in her confession of faith in Jesus’ power to transform death into life. The raising of Lazarus underlines that power: His own Resurrection will affirm that Jesus is truly the Lord of Life. God love you! Msgr. Tim Shugrue

Fifth Sunday of Lent Page Three

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK “ I am the resurrection and the life, whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.” (John 11: 45) When Jesus heard about the illness of His friend, Lazarus, He responded, “This illness is not to end in death; rather it is for God’s

glory, that through it the Son of God may be glorified.” Every aspect of our lives, our gifts as well as our sufferings, can, if surrendered to Christ, lead to blessing for ourselves and others.
