SEPTEMBER 2017

Dr. Jongwoo Han, President of the Korean War Legacy Foundation, came to King to visit with

and thank the Korean War Veterans.

Shannon HardelInterim Commandant

Wisconsin Veterans Home at King

September is upon us. It seems the summer just flew by and it also seems that the older I get, the faster time goes! September is the first month of the Fall or Autumn season (think fresh apple cider, apple pie, cool evenings, cutting wood, canning, etc.) September is the month when most kids return to school, football season starts, and we celebrate Labor Day. The first Monday in September marks Labor Day. This holiday celebrates American workers and how hard work has helped this country to do well and prosper. America was built on hard work, commitment, tenacity, and individual and family sacrifice, among others. As I have talked about in other columns, we have so much to be thankful for, in particular, our veterans and their loved ones who so willingly gave and sacrificed to ensure our freedoms.

September also marks a terrible day in America’s history. It is only right to talk about September 11, 2001, which marks the 16th anniversary of the worst act of terrorism on U.S. soil. America lost just under 3,000 people on this day. Another 6,000 people were injured. Many more continue to suffer the effects of that day. Let us never forget. Let us remember how we came together as a nation after the attacks; the compassion and bravery, the concern and care for one another, the love and gratitude resulting from a tragedy shared. All of America was impacted on this single day. The strength of Americans, when we come together as one nation, is unmatched in this world. Let us all continue to strive to come together and move ahead as one nation at all times.

I want to extend a heartfelt and sincere thank you to all of the men, women, children, emergency responders, military and others who responded on this day in history. I continue to be humbled by your bravery and sacrifices.

I wish all a blessed September,Shannon

Your Thoughts

Your thoughts cannot be bought. That is something I don’t have to be taught. For they are of love, and kindness, and care.

They are not hard to bare.

They are there for all to share. If you only care.

You gave them to me for all to see.And we got married as it was meant to be.

You put your lips of honey on mine. And that is mighty fine. You touched me so soft.

It was from aloft.

You shared your love with me.And that is how it was supposed to be.For twenty seven years you withstood.

Even motherhood.

You put up with me and my ways. What more can I say.

Except you were in my thoughts.

Life is really meant to be lived one day at a time. Really, each day if we seek the right things and take life moment by moment, day by day, we will fare so much better. I am reminded of two things that Jesus said in Matthew 6:33 & 34:

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

One of the great challenges of life is just the simple task of living in this moment, living a “present tense life.” There are two great enemies of a walk with God which try to keep us from walking with God in the “now.” One is “the fantasy of what could have been,” and the other is “the fear of what might be.” Let’s take a look at each.

What could have been- Oftentimes, many of us live our lives looking back to the past or ahead to the future. It’s rare that we live in the present tense. One of the things that we seem to fight in our minds is wondering “what could have been.” We will often look with a longing for a change because of our present adversities- “If only I had taken that other job,” or “If only I had finished college,” or “If only I hadn’t made that horrible mistake” or “If I only hadn’t moved here . . .” then life would be….. And our thoughts race to alternate present reality because of our dreams of “if only. . .” Reflecting deeply about

what could have been can be a mind avoiding diversion, but it doesn’t help us deal effectively with the present reality of “what is” in a way that can bring progress and peace in our lives. The truth is that there is no “if only I had.” There is only “what is.” Dreaming about an alternate life which would turn out different is a fantasy that brings nothing good to our present situation. It only makes the “now” harder because our fantasy solutions would have completely eliminated our real dilemmas and the need to trust the Lord with our real problems today and seek Him for ways to triumphantly deal with the present. So, what can we do when we fall into this trap? When we are tempted to visit the place of “if only I had…” Make the decision not to go to that place or journey in that dream. It’s a trip that only brings disappointment to what your life is right now. Then, take the “what is” to God and ask Him to help you to make it into something great for His glory! He will certainly show you how!

The fear of what might be- The other problem many of us struggle with is “the fear of what might be.” We become experts at worrying about something that hasn’t even happened yet. There is no way any of us can see the future, so for us to worry about it before it ever gets here is a clear lack of faith in God to care for our tomorrows. Jesus clearly said, “Don’t

worry about tomorrow.” He knew that we would be tempted to do this, and warned us against it. Fear of what might be often keeps us from walking with God and trusting him RIGHT NOW. We miss the joy of a walk with God in the present tense. It then robs us of living life at its best in the moment.

Living Life in the Moment

We each have to live a “present tense” life. And, we need to do so, intentionally. The distractions of thinking regrettably and dreaming about the past and having a fear about the future will easily take our attention away from a walk with the true and living God in the. . .right now. I mentioned the word “walk” intentionally. It’s the word that the bible uses to talk about our lives of faith. The bible calls it a walk because there are some wonderful present tense elements to a walk which will help us stay focused on the now. Here they are quickly for your consideration- a walk demands a destination, but it can only be done one step at a time, one foot on the path toward the goal, one decision at a time to reach the goal. A walk demands a present tense life. That word, “walk,” often helps me get back to

“now.” So begin your journey of faith today, anew and fresh, with that first step of living life in the now with Christ. Take the now, this moment, inviting God to take your hand, circumstance and situation asking Him to help you make the best of what is before you. As you do, take it moment by moment.

As you go through your day living your life and find the temptation to think about what could have been, i.e. “what if” or fear of the future, stop for a moment and ask the Lord, “Lord, where are we right now? What are we working on? Why am I tempted to leave this present tense walk with you?” Then allow God to whisper to you His answer of peace, guidance and direction. That quick prayer and awareness of the temptation to thoughts of the impossible will make your present tense life an exciting place to be and will quiet those “what ifs” and calm those fears.

Cross The Line by James Patterson Here is another suspenseful novel about investigator Alex Cross. Alex is called to look into a murder that appears to be the result of road rage. But then another murder causes Alex to dig deeper. This time the victim is Washington’s own chief of detectives and Alex’s former boss. The city begins to panic with nobody in charge of the besieged police force. Then Alex’s wife Bree decides to take the job! “What should be a time for her to rely on Alex for support and cooperation is instead a moment of crisis in their marriage as well as their city when their investigative instincts clash and their relationship reaches a breaking point.”

Speak The Dead by Grant McKenzie Six-year-old Sally Blue’s world came crashing down the night she was awakened by the sound of a gunshot. She ran to her parents’ bedroom where she found her mother – dead from the bullet. Her father was mysteriously missing. As Sally cradled her mother, she could swear she heard her mother’s voice telling her to run! Twenty five years later, Sally has found some shred of peace in her life. She has found respite from the voices that trailed her for years. Oddly enough, her respite is in her job as a beautician at a mortuary! But soon, another grisly murder reawakens the voices.

The Husband’s Secret by Liane MoriartyLet’s say your husband has written you a letter, one to be opened only after his death. The letter contains his deepest, darkest secret – a secret with the potential to destroy lives. You accidentally find this letter while your husband is still living! This novel tells the story of Cecilia Fitzpatrick, a successful business woman with a life as orderly and spotless as her home. Until she finds the letter…..

The Copper Beech by Maeve Binchy In the small Irish village of Shancarrig, there is a school yard with a large copper beech tree. Carved on its trunk are declarations of love, hope, identity – the youthful dreams of the many children who played there over the years. This novel tells you of the grown-up lives of many of these children – and where their dreams took them… or failed to take them.

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen Orphaned and penniless, young Jacob Jankowski hopped on a train that was home to the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. And so began his seven-year connection with the circus. It was the early part of the Great Depression, and Jacob and all the other “circus people” considered themselves lucky to have a job at all. Here he met beautiful Marlena, the star of the equestrian act. And here he met Rosie the elephant! The problem with Rosie and her new act was that the big girl couldn’t follow instructions. You will love reading about this trio – Jacob, Marlena and Rosie; their bond of love and trust provides a story so engrossing that you will be reluctant to stop reading.

The Burning Wire by Jeffery Deaver Lincoln Rhyme, a world-class forensic criminologist, is called upon to lead the investigation into terrorist-type explosions occurring throughout New York City. It turns out the killer is harnessing electricity, steering huge arc flashes with voltage so high and heat so searing that steel melts and his victims are set afire! Rhyme, a quadriplegic, calls on NYPD detective Amelia Sachs and Officer Ron Pulaski to be his eyes, ears, and legs on crime sites. And he asks FBI agent Fred Dellray to be his undercover man on the street.

No Man’s Land by David Baldacci Meet John Puller and Paul Rogers. Thirty years ago, their lives intersected when Puller’s mother Jackie vanished from Fort Monroe, Virginia. She disappeared at the same time that Paul Rogers just happened to be in town. After those thirty years, military investigators come to see Puller’s father, a legendary three-star general, now sinking into dementia. The investigators have a letter from a friend of Puller’s missing mother, and they reveal that the old man has been accused of murdering Jackie. John Puller begins investigating into his painful past. Paul Rogers can’t let the investigation go too far.
