NuGen Foundation Sale and Celebration
Catalog design by Stephanie True Moss
T he NuGen Partnership welcomes you to the NuGen Foundation Sale and Celebration! This is a significant and historic event for Santa Gertrudis Breeders International and for progressive cattlemen worldwide. It has been a
long time coming and we are extremely excited to share it with you!
We are proud to offer you the opportunity to benefit from twenty plus years of genuine genetic improvements to the Santa Gertrudis breed through the Official SGBI NuGen Project. The NuGen Foundation Sale is a unique opportunity
to select and purchase a breeding piece or group of females to build a herd around. The sale includes proven donors, heavy bred heifers, open heifers ready to breed to the bull of your choice and featured lots. These cattle are ready to meet your needs and exceed your expectations.
I was first asked to be a part of this project over twenty years ago. I, like so many others thought this would be a seven to eight year project. However throughout the project, I was constantly reminded that the Good Lord and Mother Nature are always in charge – true genetic improvements can only be rushed so far, the rest is left to a much higher power.
I want to thank SGBI and the Santa Gertrudis membership for entrusting the late Mrs. Ann Upchurch of Grey Rocks Ranch, Selma, AL and I with the opportunity to implement the SGBI Official NuGen project. I am also thankful to the other members of SGBI Standing Committee: Bill Barrett of Five Oaks Ranch, Joe Jones of Briggs Ranch, Richard Hood, Sr. of Double Circle Ranch, Wylie Taliaferro of Double TT Ranch, and the SGBI Executive Directors – Jim Reeves, Dr. Joe Garrett, Robert Swize, Ervin Katz, and John Ford for their collective years of knowledge as they kept a watchful eye on the project.
I am ever thankful to Dan and Jane Wendt of Wendt Ranch, Bay City, Texas for their confidence and dedication to this project. They gave their full endorsement by joining the NuGen Partnership in 2008. In 2011, the project’s success was affirmed when brothers, Terry and Jerry and father Berley Goodin of Goodin Farms – Austin, Indiana joined the NuGen Partnership. Collectively these three partner families have invested over 150 years of cattle breeding expertise into the project.
This is truly a time of celebration for the NuGen Partnership and SGBI! With reference to the NuGen project, I think Kati Barrett may have said it best,
“It is much like giving birth to a baby and then spending the next 20 years trying to make sure that child grows up to become your ‘pride and joy.’
Miss Ann would be (and I believe, she is) so enormously proud!”
I thank you all for your support of this historic endeavor and I hope you enjoy the sale.
All the best,
Burton McDaniel

In Memory of
Ann Samford Upchurch Grey Rocks Ranch, Selma, Alabama
Ms. Ann was one of the original NuGen Partners whose love and appreciation of the Santa Gertrudis breed was immeasurable. She had a list of accomplishments, honors and awards to rival the Queen, yet it was her genuine and unassuming manner that defined her as, “Quite a Lady”. Ann was the first female to be elected into the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association Hall of Fame and served as Producer Representative to the Beef Cattle Improvement Association board of directors.
She strongly believed that purebred cattle herds exist for the primary purpose of providing outstanding seedstock to commercial producers. When the opportunity was presented by SGBI to strengthen and improve the genetic composition of her beloved Santa Gertrudis cattle through the Official SGBI NuGen Project, she jumped on-board full throttle determined to see the goal accomplished. At each successive meeting she offered me wisdom, encouragement and personal support with the ever-constant phrase “keep the project alive.”
“Congratulations Ms. Ann — we made it!”

NuGen Foundation Sale and Celebration2
Developed over an extensive period of grading up on the King Ranch, Santa Gertrudis are truly an “American Original.” The final mating resulting in the 3/8 Brahman 5/8 Shorthorn cross proved to be golden for King Ranch. Santa Gertrudis were the first breed of beef cattle developed and recognized in the United States as a distinct breed and so proclaimed by the USDA in 1940. So astute and visionary were the founding fathers of Santa Gertrudis and Santa Gertrudis Breeders International that within the Santa Gertrudis Breed Association Constitution there is inclusion of the mandate, “It shall be the policy of the association to keep open indefinitely its herd books and records so as to accord recognition to valuable blood lines which may be developed in the future.”
On February 25, 1995, the SGBI Board of Directors approved a proposal to create a new Santa Gertrudis strain or gene pool by recreating the original 3/8 Brahman and 5/8 Shorthorn animal currently recognized as a purebred Santa Gertrudis. The proposal was entitled, the “NuGen” Project. The project was conceptualized not to alter the meticulous 3/8 Brahman and 5/8 Shorthorn combination that defines the Santa Gertrudis breed, but rather to “make the best combination better through the use of the much improved blood lines of both Brahman and Shorthorn genetics.”
For use in the NuGen Project, the initial shorthorn genetics were determined under close scrutiny by the Executive Director of the American Shorthorn Association. The animals used in Phase 1 met the strict requirements of both the SGBI Breed Standards NuGen Committee and the American Shorthorn Association. The Red Brahman females selected to be flushed to the shorthorn bulls were selected with the help of numerous top Red Brahman breeders. Dr. Jim Sanders from Texas A&M was selected to be on the committee to assist in the academic side for genetic development.
Mrs. Ann Upchurch of Grey Rocks Ranch, Selma, Alabama and Dr. Burton McDaniel of MC Ranch, Ringgold, Georgia provided initial funding for the long-range project. Sadly, Mrs. Upchurch passed away in March of 1996 just days after the first animals were inspected at MC Ranch. Prior to her death, Mrs. Upchurch gave her younger partner Dr. McDaniel the charge “to keep this project alive.”
Dr. McDaniel provided the day-to-day intense management of the project, supported completely and
throughout by members of the SGBI Nu-Gen committee. Dr. McDaniel forged ahead as he was charged, keeping the project free of impure shortcuts and moving forward under the guidelines of the SGBI Board mandate.
On May 12, 2007, NG 7A2 was born. Dr. McDaniel had successfully accomplished the goal of recreating a 3/8 Brahman and 5/8 Shorthorn animal meeting the Standard of Excellence of the Santa Gertrudis Association.
In 2008 Dr. McDaniel was joined in partnership by Dan and Jane Wendt of Wendt Ranch in Bay City, Texas. The Wendt’s years of Santa Gertrudis knowledge and their extensive
numbers of cattle aided the projects progress. In appreciation of the Wendt’s support, NG 7A2 was named “Ms. Jane.”
The final step in the NuGen project was the mating of NuGen animals to registered, purebred Santa Gertrudis, keeping the genetic tracings back to Monkey intact. Should there be any questions, registration number 1 in the Santa Gertrudis herdbook belongs to the King Ranch bull known as Monkey. He became the foundation herd sire for the breed, with every purebred Santa Gertrudis animal in the world tracing back to that one superior individual.
After a rigorous selection process, MC 423 “Earl,”

was chosen to breed to “Ms. Jane.” MC 423 was selected because of his calving ease, balanced performance and superior phenotype. The resulting offspring was NG Legend, with pedigree tracing back to Monkey and thus the first registered animal from the NuGen Project.
In 2011, while on a visit to MC Ranch, brothers Terry and Jerry Goodin viewed first hand the resulting offspring of the NuGen Project. They were impressed by the cattle and excited about the potential impact for both commercial and purebred breeders, they joined forces with the NuGen Partnership to help expand the infusion.
The vision of Santa Gertrudis Breeders International leadership and the prodigy of those entrusted to carry out the vision are proudly exhibited for all to see. It is with great pleasure and a humble heart the NuGen Partnership makes its initial public offering of NuGen genetics on April 18, 2015.
While the art of breeding requires intense application to details, endless study, observation, and application of a keen artistic sense, the rewards are great and I know of no task of such consuming and lasting interest.” ~Robert J Kleberg

Reading the DataThe Santa Gertrudis Breeders International genetic evaluation is one of the most comprehensive among the Bos indicus breeds. The evaluation system, developed for the association by Livestock Genetic Services, has been reviewed by the nation’s leading animal geneticists and utilizes genotypes collected from the breed’s leading sires and validated on 10K, 20K, and 50K SNP Chips. Thousands of ranch phenotypes and scan records collected over a 25 year period serve as the foundation of the genetic evaluation. SGBI’s reliable genetic evaluation ensures that cattlemen can make sound selection decisions, identifying those animals that will perform in the most challenging environmental conditions.
John Ford John GenhoExecutive Director PresidentSanta Gertrudis Breeders International Livestock Genetic Services
Welcome to the NuGen Foundation Sale. It has certainly been an honor to work with the McDaniel family these last several years as their herd veterinarian. My major area of interest as a veterinarian has always been beef cattle herd health. Because of this, I always count it a privilege to work with herd owners like the McDaniels who have this same commitment to preventative health care for their cattle. This not only prevents disease, which helps their bottom line, but also assures the buyer that he or she is taking home a healthy, problem free animal.
The vaccination program includes vaccination of all cattle for IBR, PI, BVD, BRSV, 5 way Lepto, Vibrio (complobacter) Haemophilus Somnus and an 8way Clostridial vaccine. All pregnant cows are vaccinated with Scour Guard 4KC to prevent viral and bacterial scours in their baby calves. All heifers are calfhood vaccinated against brucellosis. The cattle are dewormed regularly and dewormers are rotated to prevent any parasite resistance. A high quality mineral mix is provided free choice at all times.
The MC Ranch herd is a Certified Brucellosis Free Herd and has been for many years. Interstate health papers will be written on all cattle sold in the sale and I will be available on sale day to answer any questions you might have about the heard health program.
Sincerely,
J. David Loughridge, DVM

Congratulations to the Burton McDaniel Family and the NuGen partners on the first public offering of NuGen Santa Gertrudis genetics. The NuGen project was proposed and approved by the Santa Gertrudis Breeders International Board of Directors on February 25, 1995. Initial financial support to implement the project was made available by Santa Gertrudis Hall of Fame Member Mrs. Ann Upchurch and Dr. Burton McDaniel. It has been a 20 year process guided to completion under the watchful eye of Dr. Burton McDaniel. The project was designed in order to infuse new Shorthorn and Brahman genetics into the breed’s gene pool. Overseen and approved by an SGBI standing committee of the breed’s most respected cattlemen, the project’s final phase was the mating of NuGen animals to purebred Santa Gertrudis, linking NuGen genetics to the breed’s foundation sire Monkey. The industry has witnessed numerous changes in the last 20 year period, however, Dr. McDaniel’s commitment to the NuGen project and the Santa Gertrudis breed has been unwavering. His careful observation of each animal involved in the project, combined with 20 years of day to day management, has resulted in a structurally sound, correct and functional offering. Viewing the cattle, one quickly realizes that throughout the project, Dr. McDaniel placed selection pressure on the economically important maternal traits. Burton’s philosophy, an animal must maintain body condition, regardless of grazing conditions, produce adequate milk and be reproductively efficient is appreciated by all cattlemen.
On behalf of the SGBI membership, congratulations and thank you to the Burton McDaniel Family and the NuGen partners on the first public offering of NuGen Santa Gertrudis Cattle.

Due to additional data becoming available for the low accurracy carcass traits, the ranges of these traits have been adjusted to align with the breed’s higher accuracy growth traits and provide a truer industry picture. While this impacts an animal’s actual carcass EPDs, it does not impact ranking within the breed. Following adjustment and with the additional data, ranks remain above a 98% correlation as compared to the August 2014 download.

1One and two score animals are nervous and do not like to be in close quarters with people on foot – but they are great for big range operations
3 Three score animals have an average disposition.
5Four and five score animals are calm and easy to walk up to with feed and they make up a large number of NuGen Cattle.
Docility Scale SGBI Genomic Enhanced EPDsExpected Progeny Differences, EPDs, are the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the SGBI database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure (plus or minus) for each trait being evaluated and are calculated utilizing pedigree and performance information. Earlier this year Santa Gertrudis Breeders International released the first genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (DNA verified) for Bos indicus influenced cattle. GE-EPDs provide more precise EPDs based on a combination of both phenotype and DNA. The inclusion of DNA into the breed’s EPD calculations (GE-EPDs) result in information that is more accurate and predictable than a pedigree and performance prediction alone.
SGBI recently added new indexes to assist buyers in making the best choice for their herd. Below are two different ranking indexes and their description
Growth Index – The growth index is a dollar index putting together weaning weight and yearling weight. Since WW is contained in YW, post wean gain (PWG) is used in the index to prevent double counting the WW.
As an example of the index, if an animal has a +30 growth index, their offspring will be on average worth $30 more as
yearling than the breed average, based strictly on weight.
Carcass Rank Index – The carcass rank index contains marbling score, hot carcass weight, ribeye area, back fat and tenderness is weighted by the economics of carcass values. It is expressed here as a numerical ranking within the breed from 1-10 with 10 being the highest. For example, an animal with a score of 9 would be in the 80th percentile or would be better than 80% of the population in carcass composition. A ranking of 6 would place the animal in the 50th percentile.

NuGen Foundation SaleNuGen had its start as an idea spurred on by far sighted and progressive breeders. This idea led to the perception that this “NuGen” could be accomplished. Reality became an accomplishment, overcoming some negativity and doubt.
The very elite Shorthorn and Brahman genetics were selected after many hours and days of study. Visual appraisal along, with the very best number within each breed, were considered and evaluated. Trips were made by a committee to guide and approve each step until the time came to go full throttle. With bumps along the path, the idea was never abandoned. The McDaniel Family took the reins and continued toward the goal. Along the way the Wendts and Goodins added their input.
After 20 years, the NuGen goals were reached. This led to a completely different gene base. NuGen along with the genomic enhanced E.P.D.’s, carcass data, and tests also gives breeders many excellent choices in breeding cattle. Out crossing has always produced the best results. Different bloodlines for a hybrid vigor kick within the same breed, NuGen gives you the unique opportunity to have that distinct advantage for you to use. This is going to be a ground breaking sale for the future.

February 26, 2015Dear Fellow Breeders,
The NuGen committee’s plan for the NuGen program was to maintain the positive traits of the Santa Gertrudis cattle, but at the same time, improve on the misconceptions about the breed. This plan has been accomplished. The program started at the beginning and brought forward, with new genetics, hard work and close management, a productive, efficient and profitable animal that can go into the pasture and perform and be self sufficient.
Of course, the success of this endeavor would never have come to fruition without the support and foresight of Grey Rocks Ranch, Mrs. Ann Upchurch; the NuGen partnership – MC Ranch, Dr. Burton and Judy McDaniel and family; Wendt Ranch, Dan and Jane Wendt; Goodin Farms, Berley, Jerry and Terry Goodin; past Executive Director of S.G.B.I. Jim Reeves; and members of the NuGen committee.
The future of the NuGen program and Santa Gertrudis cattle is so positive and I am extremely proud of being a part of this and other projects for this progressive breed.
Sincerely,Richard G. Hood, Sr., Double Circle Ranch

WENDT RANCH is pleased to be a part of the NuGen program. When we invested into the program we intended to be much more involved; however, due to health problems we were not able to fulfill the responsibilities we had planned.
The breed should be extremely proud of the McDaniels who along with Ann Upchurch of Grey Rocks Ranch activated the official NuGen project at the request of Santa Gertrudis Breeders International. It has been quite an investment to finish this program to date and the Santa Gertrudis breeders owe the McDaniels a huge thank you for continuing this project aside the death of Mrs. Upchurch. This program is an asset to the Santa Gertrudis industry and we congratulate everyone who has participated in this program.

19NuGen Foundation Sale and Celebration
As I reflect on the origination of the “NuGen” project, I recall the feeling that my idea had little or no chance of gaining the endorsement of the SGBI Board of Directors unless I was able to convince them of the potential benefit this project could have on the entire Santa Gertrudis Breed.I worked on the “Breeding Plan” most of the winter of 1993 and hoped I was prepared to present a compelling argument for the adoption of the NuGen project at the Spring SGBI Board Meeting. I must say that I was still a little doubtful of it’s acceptance after my presentation and watching the expressions on individual faces around the Board Room Table. Finally, Mrs. Ann Upchurch broke the silence by saying “I don’t see how we can refuse to take advantage of this once in a life-time opportunity to potentially enhance
the perceived genetic value of our cattle in the eyes of many skeptics within the purebred industry, while generating some much needed excitement within the ranks of our membership. I don’t see that we have anything to lose with all the Association “safe-guards” this plan contains”.Thus, the NuGen Proposal unanimously passed and the authorization to begin was issued by the full Board of Directors on February 23, 1994.Here we are, 21 years later, and had it not been for the dedication, foresight and financial commitment of two individuals, this valuable project would have perished. The Santa Gertrudis Breed owes a huge debt of gratitude to Ann Upchurch and Burton McDaniel, pioneers in their own right to seeing the NuGen
Project to the amazing status his holds today.Burton never let the loss of our dear friend and co-founder of this project, Ann Upchurch, squelch the burning desire he had to see this cutting-edge endeavor to it’s conclusion. The NuGen genetics that have been tediously refined since the inception
of this project have the potential of addressing two of the greatest challenges the breed has identified since it’s origination….First, Consistency in Phenotypic predictionSecond, Carcass Merit backed by intense, verified performance data within “top & bottom side” parentage determination and selection Remember:“Both Eye Appeal & Predictability can best be attained thru the utilization of scientifically developed “NuGen Seedstock”.Jim ReevesP.S. “Thanks for picking up the Torch and completing the race, Burton & Judy”. Dear Friends,
Congratulations on completing a monumental task.
In reviewing my file regarding Nu Gen, I found a letter dated August 1, 1994 from Mrs. Ann Upchurch. This may be the first official document of the Nu Gen Project.
Over the years many changes have occurred since those early meetings. We have had the opportunity to view many of the offspring’s of this project, we know it has been a big challenge.
This project has the unique opportunity to supply a completely new base line for the Santa Gertrudis breed world wide. I am looking forward to seeing the outcome of a new direction.
See you at the sale.
Su Amigo,
Joe Jones
Through the years many friends and family have graciously offered support to our family as we traveled this NuGen journey – we appreciate each and every one of you. One special friend stands alone; for with every favor we asked, she first offered understanding, then she tried to understand. Stephanie Moss, you a one in a million!

GOODIN FARMS is honored to be a part of the NuGen program. We have strived to create a better Santa Gertrudis animal for nearly 20 years by utilizing technology as it has become available. Without a doubt we have used bloodlines that run through practically every farm and ranch in the Santa Gertrudis breed. This use of technology and diversity has culminated in our offerings in this sale. These offerings bring a little something for every buyer—open heifers, bred heifers and bred cows with NuGen calves aboard. We have avoided breeding for extremes, focusing instead on selecting profitable cattle with balanced EPDs. The genetic information reflects our commitment to produce a market friendly Santa Gertrudis animal that is profitable for all sectors of the industry. Thank you for looking at our cattle and we hope we have met your expectations. Please call us if you have any questions. We hope you can visit us one day at our farm at Austin in the rolling hills of southern Indiana.

One of a limited number of signed prints which was reproduced from the original pastel art piece by the late David Sanders, and currently hangs at the King Ranch Corporate Office in Houston, Texas will be auctioned to benefit the “New Generation” of Santa Gertrudis Leaders and their 2015 summer leadership conference, GOALS.
GOALS is an acronym for Gerts Ongoing Advanced Leadership Summit. Every other summer approximately 50 young and enthusiastic Santa Gertrudis breeders attend this week long leadership conference where Santa Gertrudis friendships are cemented for life. A huge thank you to Wade and Angie Ruddock of Ruddock River Ranch, Rockport, TX for donating this print.
The New Generation of Santa Gertrudis Breeders are eager to leave their print on the future of the Santa Gertrudis breed.

Donated Lot Benefitting the New Generation of Santa Gertrudis Leaders
MC RANCH is very proud to have been such a big part in the Official Santa Gertrudis NuGen Project over the past 21 years. We feel both honored and humbled to have been
allowed to blaze this trail for our fellow Santa Gertrudis breeders. We are thankful for all the help and encouragement we have had along the way – especially when our fire needed a little rekindling. We would be remiss if we didn’t take this opportunity to express how very
proud we are of our very own, Dr. Burton McDaniel. Like Ms. Ann, his determination, stubborn streak and a will of iron have served him well during the days of this journey.
Thank you all for the letting us share in this historic endeavor.
The MC Ranch gate is always unlocked – Ya’ll come!
